[Q] H+ vs 4G T-Mobile US - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a Z1 Compact from Clove. LOVE the phone, but want to make sure I'm getting the right speeds. Most often, I see H+ or H for data. Occasionally 4G. I'm on T-Mobile in Los Angeles where my Nexus 5 said LTE most of the time.
If I used to see "LTE" on the Nexus, what should I be seeing to get the equivalent speeds on the Z1 Compact?
Thanks in advance!

woah.. the Z1c works here in the U.S. with 4G LTE?? i'm looking to switch to T-Mo from VZW, and this would be the push i need. is it as easy as popping in their sim card? also, where the best place to buy one? thanks!

Yep! All I did was pop in my TMo SIM card, add in the APN settings for LTE (very easy), and Z1c on 4G LTE in the US. Awesome.

that's exactly what i did. goodbye vzw with this phone. if you're starting a new account and you want the $30 100mins 5g data unlimited text prepaid plan i got, you need to buy the activation kit from the t-mobile website. there are sim cards available elsewhere, but they don't come with the necessary activation code.
when porting my number, i found i was able to make calls immediately, but it took several hours for incoming calls to stop going to vzw voicemail.
also, once you're up you'll need to change apn settings to get mms to work.

this is awesome. that's exactly what i'm planning to do. i'm looking into their "pay your early termination fee, since i still have a few months with vzw". did you go that route also? i'm not sure if they will pay my etf if i bring in my own phone. did you buy yours from clove also?

i can't help you with the early termination fee: part of why i was so excited about the z1c (aside from it being exactly what i was looking for in a phone) was that it came out a month after my contract was up. there's a t-mo faq on that here.
i did buy from clove. their security procedures are much more stringent than those of the card i paid for it with, but after that was settled they were quick and reliable.

just spoke to a t-mo rep, and they said it is a requirement to trade in my old phone in order for them to pay the ETF.. bummer. since the U.S. t-mo doesn't carry the Z1c.. i won't be able to do this. i guess i'm stuck w vzw for a few more months.

It's worth mentioning that different firmware will show different things. I sourced my Z1c from somewhere other than Clove and it has a Chinese firmware on it. That firmware displays H+ for "4g" and LTE for the real 4G LTE signal. Mine has no 4g icon, oddly enough.
Another easy way to tell in a speedtest is the upload speeds. Sometimes my downloads are roughly the same for HSPA and LTE, with ping being way lower and upload being way higher on LTE.
Anyway, enjoy the phone! I too said see ya to Verizon. I did want to take advantage of the ETF deal, so I bought an LG G2 (can't ever have enough phones!) and also did the $200 Blackberry trade in deal. So I walked away feeling pretty darn good about the whole deal.

It may not be the most kosher thing to do, but buy a Blackberry for $20 on Craigslist and trade it in for $200 at T-mo.
Edit: sorry, I'm half asleep. Doesn't help you very much with the Z1c. Still, though, it's a great deal in order to get your ETF paid for and then $200 off some new phone from T-mo. I did that, then simply bought the Z1c outright because I like to have two phones.

[Q] World travel? AT&T?

LTE is defiantly Verizon. Also appears to cost $299 (w/ 2 yr. contract) on Verizon.
http://www.slashgear.com/galaxy-nexus-found-on-verizon-map-for-november-10-at-299-14188245/
Rumors have it going to AT&T & T-Mobile as well.... but those are just rumors.
LTE is technically AT&T as well, at least in some markets, but yes, I've heard the same rumors. That's what I'm trying to pin down, as Verizon's coverage in my area is spotty.

Lack of AT&T saddens me. Verizon has no coverage where I live.
God damn it, i don't care about verizon and their ridiculous pricing and lack of sim cards. Is this thing coming to T-Mobile?

I know how you feel, I feel the same way
I don't care if the f*cker costs $1000, just bring it to AT&T!!!!
Good news is..... wait for it.....
This info. seems dated, as this phone passed the FCC approval listings for AT&T and T-mobile.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/08/...s-through-the-fcc-possibly-heading-to-atandt/
So until we get an official Samsung or Google word on the actual carriers, I would just sum up everything to speculation.
The FCC testing reports and official spec sheets that have been floating around show the proper bands for both ATT and TMO. So, you can just order it where ever...
For those that are new to this line of phones, the nexus series has always ended up on all of the major carriers. Just be patient. I'm just as excited as you all are.

Yeah, that's just outrageous. It's typical phone pricing before the phone is actually released. When the dist settles, nothing but good news will come from it. There will be no way that this phone will be over $600. I'm thinking that $529 will be the sweet spot.
This is pentaband phone. I don't know why you need a carrier to have the SGN. I would buy it out right use it whatever carrier your on. Don't need a carrier to subsidies it even though it will be as cheaper way to go.

Ok, I;m gonna go out on my NooB limb here and just ask...
So, lets just say the Galaxy Nexus goes Verizon only in the U.S. (I don't think this will be the case, but for $hits & giggles, lets just say that's what happens)... I would assume that this Verizon version would be the LTE version of the Nexus. Ok, so since Verizon uses CMDA, I couldn't purchase one at full price from Verizon and just stick my AT&T card in it an expect it to work, could I??
So the other option (in this imaginary Verizon/U.S. only world) would be to order a over seas GSM version, use my AT&T sim card??? If so, would I need a unlock code??
Sorry for the stupid questions... just trying to get all my ducks in a row, so I know what to do when the official carrier info. is released by Samsung. This stuff just isn't my forte; usually just stick to a carrier phone, but am willing to make an exception in this case. Thanks.

Not all LTE use the same frequencies just like the GSM issue with AT&T and TMobile in the US or even among some European countries where a 3g phone from one country will only have EDGE in another country even though both are GSM/UMTS. I haven't seen anything with the LTE frequencies being used, but you can easily Google to find the Verizon versus AT&T frequency problems as many have commented on it...prior to the release of this phone that is.
Now, it may be possible for Samsung to include many/all LTE frequencies in one radio. That sure would be good for the end user.
I don't care how much it would cost either, I just hope one of the models is ported to sprint

If you were to import a GSM hspa phone, no worries. All nexus phones are unlocked. You can use any GSM carrier. Previous nexus were either T-Mobile compatible or att compatible. But it seems the Galaxy Nexus is compatible with all GSM carrier.

Seriously. I am contemplating switching to Verizon, but I just don't think that it is a good idea to switch carriers just for a phone. Guess I will just have to enjoy my E3D until the SGN comes to Sprint - if it does.

I'm in the same boat. My Sprint contract ended on Thur, my Evo's USB has broken off, so I'm in need of a new phone. I can move to Verizon - or perhaps stay with Sprint and grab a Galaxy S2 (and wait for ICS port).
Recommendations?
Thanks and Gig'em.
So this sucks.... I hate you Verizon.

Later... How much later??? Maybe??? Jesus, might as well wait for the SGSIII if it's gonna be spring of next year or some ridiculous thing. Hopefully the Asus Transformer 2 comes out sooner, that way I can at least console myself.

Galaxy nexus prices?
So,what are the off contract prices for the galaxy nexus( in other country's)
in The Netherlands.
it will be released in December(late in my eyes) and for advice price of 649 euros!
really expensive in my eye's.
thats:
887,57 dollar.
564,76 British pound.
so im looking into a solution to import it for a cheaper price than the dutch version.
we use GSM here and that means the HSPA+ version if im right.
Pricing list:
The Netherlands- 649 Eur-887,57 USD-564,76 GBP
belsimpel.nl- 649 Eur-887,57 USD- 564,76 GBP [32GB]
MOBICITY- 605,50 Eur-810,18 USD-520,69 GBP [Pre-ORDER]
British retailer Clove-588,38 Eur-813,61 USD-514.80 GBP [16GB]
Italy-599 Eur-828,30 USD-524,10 GBP [16GB]
T-Mobile-469,34 Eur- 649 USD-410,65 GBP[unlocked 32GB][Source unknown,not 100% accurate]
I don't think very long. A month at most....just my two cents but I'm pretty sure Google WANTS the Nexus on EVERY CARRIER....
Great....I respond to the post directly above and then you edit....
It's a tablet dammit! Not a BIG phone....
In Italy the 16 GB version is going to be released in the second half on Novembre/start of December for 599€ (825$).
But I'm going to buy the 32GB unlocked T-Mobile Galaxy Nexus (that works with European networks) for about 649$ (only 470€).
**** italian prices :-D
I had been thinking of switching to Verizon for some LTE goodness, but then T-mobile had to go ahead and create a $30 no contract unlimited data/texting 100 minute plan (I never use minutes).
I can buy the phone at $600 and save more than the Verizon subsidy in under 8 months...
Gah...so torn...

Am I crazy...

Im considering leaving Verizon and my unlimited Data plan behind for AT&T. Am I crazy? I think of it like this.... We have more options with GSM. Google will sell the Nexus from now on for a no contract price cheaper than the stores. Verizon will probably never see another Nexus. If we like a phone that is ether not coming to the states or coming 6 months later we can still buy one.
Trading one tyrant for another.
Your call. I'd go contract free before doing such a thing.

You'll lose your unlimited Verizon plan when you "upgrade" your phone anyways... unless you buy full price.
So yeah personally I'm GSM all the way and I buy my phones full price anyways, and I use no contract T-Mobile. So up to you if you want.

Unless the coverage is poor in your area I would recommend T-Mobile over AT&T. AT&T is a rather awful carrier in more ways than I'd like to go into right now. Either way, while Verizon has incredible coverage I never recommend using a CDMA network of any kind, much less Verizon, but that is my own personal opinion.

GSM all the way. I much prefer the flexibility of SIM cards to..well..hard programming into the phone. There's something nice about being able to totally skip your carrier when you want to change phones.
For example, I got sick of my old HTC Legend. Even though I was only a year into my contract, I got a second hand Xperia Play, swap the sim, boom boom done. A year later I'm due for an upgrade and I'm not even sick of my phone. No matter, hello Nexus!

Yeah it's new. Came with the new shared everything plans. And apparently they're also going to start tacking on a 40 dollar per month service fee for smartphones as well. Really lame.
In my opinion, I'm really happy with ATT. Yeah they're more expensive than TMobile, but their coverage is damn good and my hspa+ speeds are actually faster than VZW's lte where I live. It really depends on your area. But I definitely suggest either ATT or TMobile purely for the gsm phones. Means you can use international versions as well.

When did it change? I remember when my American BF changed his phone a year or two ago (verizon) and he had to get them to reprogram the contacts because of lack of SIM. Sorry for the lack of knowledge here, I live in Canada.

With the addiiton of LTE devices, they brought in the SIMs as well.
Their EvDo devices are simless, but as far as I know, there will be no more new 3G devices brought out. At least this year.

Yeah I forgot about that. I haven't looked at the new pricing at all, just read articles about it. Do you by chance know if the shared plans are cheaper overall for say a family of 4 with smartphones on the shared plan vs an old plan where they all have like 30 per month individual data plans? Seems to me like it wouldn't be much of a stretch for a carrier to pull some BS like that nowadays. Haha.

Need feedback on switching carrers ATT and Tmobile

So here is my situation...right now i have a galaxy nexus on sprint and i renewed in May so i'm stuck with them until may 2014 however i'm tired of their data "speeds" and i might so screw it and make the expensive switch lol. i love the phone but getting only 0.01 MB at my house is unexpectable and not being able to use my "unlimitied" data either is just a waste of money for see that i pay every month...so anyways i'm deciding on what to do. should i go to ATT or T-moblie. I looked at T-Mobile's plans and they are better than ATT IMO but i need to know where my nexus phone would work best at. If anyone lives in southern california area and more like riverside, pomona, corona, chino cities can you let me know please? thanks for the help in advance
It wasn't clear from your post, but I wanted to make sure you were aware that your current Nexus will not work on AT&T or T-Mobile. You will need to buy a GSM Galaxy Nexus to use on AT&T or T-Mobile.
I do not have experience with either service in that area, but you could test them each out for a month with a no contract plan to see how they work. T-Mobile offers a no contract plan directly, and you could use Straight Talk to try out AT&T's network.
You should look at the prepaid thread...

I do not have experience with either service in that area, but you could test them each out for a month with a no contract plan to see how they work. T-Mobile offers a no contract plan directly, and you could use Straight Talk to try out AT&T's network.

When verizon rolls out pure LTE, What bands will be used by Verizon? and will they still use band 13?
What's this?
Don't we already have LTE?

It means sending messages and receiving calls over 4g, completely getting rid of the cdma radio in the phone.
Last I heard phone calls was handled over 1x. Anyways until they have lte coverage coast to coast including all of Alaska and Hawaii. They can't get rid of cdma network

That would be very nice. But they have to get LTE everywhere first.
I'm waiting on the rollout of aws band 4, and the wcdma bands 1700 and 2100 will be used
Is this the same as the advanced LTE they are rolling out in some cities? I heard the M7 won't be capable of accessing that.
Can't see them getting rid of CDMA and 1x. As that would screw over a lot of people with dumb phones.

The m7 will not be compatible with aws (advanced lte, xlte, etc.).

If you guys are looking for AWS, then you're in a perfect position. I just got a free m8 because Verizon has a (secretive) promotion currently underway to upgrade people to AWS-compatible phones. I was notified of this by my company's enterprise verizon rep. I wasnt going to be eligible for an upgrade until August 2015, but under this promotion, I got automatic early upgrade eligibility, a $199 discount, and a waived $30 upgrade fee. I literally got a free m8 yesterday because of this.
I am NOT trying to troll anyone. I know it sounds too good to be true... but it's not. Give it a shot. It has to be a corporate-owned Verizon store, and you have to be in a AWS market.
Get to keep unlimited?

Still 2 year contract?
I didn't get to "keep" unlimited data. I sold my soul a couple years ago and gave up unlimited data for a free galaxy nexus. Although it's not a problem for me, I have wifi everywhere I go, and my work (im the IT Manager at my company) provides me with a AWS mifi card when I travel.
And yes, I basically just reset the 2 year contract early - I'm now in for another 2 years with VZW. Again, not an issue for me because there's really no other provider in the US that I'd rather have. Verizon's 4g coverage is just too good - 2 years ago I went to Tahoe and I was getting 4g reception on 10k foot peaks while skiing...

Did they have a name for this promotion or anything? Online chat doesn't seem to know anything...that's not very surprising though haha.

My enterprise vzw rep said that the promotion is not being advertised and not to be fended off by store staff stating they don't know about it. For me it was easy because I dropped his name and the store manager knew him and got everything squared away for me. It wasn't just a hookup though it is a real promo. I'll see if I can stop by the store tomorrow on my lunch break and get the promo code to share with everyone.

That would be very much appreciated! I'm locked in until 2015 as well so I'd love to take advantage of this. I'll give my store a shout in the morning to see if I have any luck.

Sorry, I've been swamped all day at work. I did however send brholt6 all of the information I had, and he said he'd be checking with his local store at some point today. If he doesn't have any results for us today I can try to go tomorrow.

Lower your Note 4 price AT&T!!!

Can someone from Att please respond and let us know why in the world are they charging over 100 dollars more for their note over Verizons? I would really like to know this. You guys should price match!
Because they know their customers are sheep.
I refuse to buy it from Att unless they lower it. I currently plan on buying it from t-mobile and paying to have it unlocked so I can use it on att and hopefully have an unlocked bootloader.
You can't just walk into a T Mobile store and buy a note 4, you need to have a account with them.
You can after it is released, but you can't preorder it without an account.

I thought you can buy any phone for $50 more without a plan.
I'm so glad I switched to T-mobile.

I agree it sucks but most customers don't know the difference or that they even have other options. I can't see my 60 yr old dad trying to save a $100 by by buying from T-Mobile and then figuring out APN settings when he doesn't even know what they are.

Yeah, like executives from ATT read posts from XDA...and, like they would care about overcharging for ANYTHING...
It is funny as evil as big corp is like ATT and VZW and BofA and Delta, people still want to go with them even if they got Tmo coverage.
Go figures. So why?
What's funny to me is all of the people that don't know the actual meaning of the word Evil...
They may be greedy, which T-Mobile is too, but not exactly evil...

No man. Tmo is not evil. They are the pricing leader. You didnt know this?
Pricing leader doesn't mean they aren't greedy, or 'evil' for that matter.
Just means that they are the cheapest right now. Oh, and also have the sh|tt|est network, too... Coincidence?
couldnt disagree with you more; you obviously arent in a major metro or suburban area, because tMobile is fantastic now in those areas..
rural and country area, not so good, but otherwise you are totally off base..

Tmobile can be pretty bad in my area, North and central NJ. Otherwise I would have switched the them long ago. Worst thing is at the hospital I work at I get 5 bars Tmobile at the front door, by the time I get to my office I have zero reception making my phone a paperweight, where my ATT retains it's 5 full bars all the way to my office. I'm not seeing where Tmobile has much cheaper plans than ATT either, certainly not cheap enough to make me lose reception, I think last time I looked it was a $10/month difference.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not in love with ATT. I just don't see the value in getting Tmobile, at least in my area.
if you havent tried them recently, it might be worth taking their 7 day "test drive" to see if they have improved coverage in your area..they give you an iphone to use for 7 days for free, so you could see if their nationwide network improvement program did anything in your area..

Yeah maybe worth trying. Last time I gave them a shot was about 8 months ago. The reception varied widely wherever I traveled. NJ is a weird place, you would think as one of the most dense areas in the country it would have perfect coverage, but it does not. Even my ATT reception is funky at times. But the worst offence with Tmobile was their indoor coverage, in any large building it seemed to be awful. I doubt they are going to be able to fix that, especially with their push for WiFi calling, WiFi unfortunately is unavailable to me at my work.

there IS no t-Mobile in Montana - so we piggyback/roam onto att anyway. But who else besides T-Mo offers no 4g throttle down after 2gb-4gb . . . . . that's Way more valuable than a less spotty network, IMO.
.
so.... the question is the tmobile version is 100% compatible with att lte? what about the sprint or verizon version? i heard the verizon versin is only 699.

Not more valuable to me... I NEED my phone to actually work reliably in the 13 cities I support, or *I* won't work reliably... Lol. I use maybe 7-10 gig a month, so I just pay for it.
For some people, unlimited worth spottier service may be worth it though. Each to their own.
