Bottom speaker mesh buckled? - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else noticed that the bottom speaker mesh/grille appears to buckle easily?
Holding mine to the light I can see about 3-4 indentations, can also feel them with my fingernail
Absolutely no idea how any of them happened
It's a very subtle thing but I still expected better from a metal frame

This is getting worse of its own accord, now the mesh is completely fractured in 2 places - with no drops or rough handling. The silver paint/whatever is also coming off
Is no one else seeing this happen?

Is a very tiny mesh: if you press the bottom inserting in a sleeve make sure do not press over the mesh but on the corners

OMG! It seems you need to replace a new one.
Does it still keep water-resistant?

Did anybody notice...?

The little plastic bits at each side of the keyboard. I've just noticed them now. They're like the screen protecter film you get on electronic devices. I wonder if they indicate areas of possible wear and tear
Yes ... they are at the rear of the keyboard and on the underside of the screen half as well.
I found with mine that at the back there were a couple of scratches in this plastic indicating that the mechanism was so tight that it did mark. Hard to say what it would be like over time.
Did you check your PM re the screen ?
Also ... can you confirm your tilt is very stiff ... particularly the initial movement ... and that when you push the screen back down, just before it goes flat ... that you get a distinct click like a dislocation ?
Paul.

Paul, I just got mine today and you are right, the tilt is stiff at the initial movement and it also has a click (mechanical) sound just before it goes flat.
as far as scratches are concerned, there are none that i can see.
however, there seems to be a gap between the keys and the screen panel, so there should be no problem in that area pertaining to scratches or friction.
Any sign of that pinched top surface about 1/2" down from the top as the front surface touches the left chrome edge ?

Well if the screen is facing towards me then this is happening on the right side surface. Also the protector on the right side (of the keyboard) is a bit worn out so may be that is the reason.
Do you think removing the protector (from either sides of keyboard) will result in scratches?
I too have a stiff one. Yes, the tilt. And when I tilt it back again it has a click. I think the phone feels strong and well-made. I'm already happy with it.
Gutted that I screwed up putting the screen protector on.

The left-hand plastic managed to get tangled up in the slide mechanism this morning. Was a bit of a mission to get it out but I'm just gonna get rid of that bit. Will leave the right side on for the time being.
Incidentally, the screen protector in the box is very soft and gets marked really easily!

If you remove one, I would remove the other one too. Otherwise on side of the screen will experience more friction, what can't be good for the ballance.
I knew you lot would get all double entendrey with that post. For the record, I've been playing with it lots all over the weekend and it's not got any softer. Still nice and firm.
Don't. Just don't.

[Q] Anyone noticed defects in the polycarbonate casing?

I noticed today that just above the bottom end of the volume rocker, between that and where the screen sits, there was a slight, sharp bump in the polycarbonate. I have managed to smooth it out some what by gently shaving it down with a sharp blade.
So i was wondering, Has anyone else noticed any defects in the casing. Things like sharp ridges, bumps or burr's?
I've not noticed anything on my phone but somebody else on this forum did have one where there was a very thin crack or molding line on one of the corners. They had it replaced IIRC.
My first one had a couple of "air bubbles" in the casing. They were very small. There was also a dark dot on the white surface on the back. I didn't swap the unit out for this..it had other problems.
The one I have now seems to be free of defects. But I did read other reports with similar things.
Perfection....not!
OK, so I'm not the only one. I guess i do have the plus side of i didn't get a white one so if there is any marks on the casing they won't show up as easily.

I have a sharp bump/ imperfection on right below the microUSB slot. Good thing its virtually invisible unless you look for it.

I only noticed the one i had because my finger brsuhed over it. I would guess it's a burr from the molding process but then it would be in the same place on every device. Although if there are different molds for the grey/black and white ones then it may just be what i suspect.
As i said in an earlier post, you can get rid of it by using a sharp blade and running of it the bump gently a couple of times to shave it down

I would but it doesn't show up so there isn't much point.
Wont it show up in proper lightning angle?
I have on the back a small line which you can see only when holding the phone in proper lightning angle. It's hard to see, I had the phone for 15 days but I just noticed it today.

It's on the opposite side to the dock pins.

Nope. I was taking some shots of it today for a review i've done for installornot.com (link in my sig) and it just didn't show up.
But i can describe it as left over from plastic from an injection moulding process. You know how when plastic is injection moulded it leaves a sort of spike where the plastic was injected into the mould. It was exactly like that.
Ah! I've got that too plus the one in the opposite side of the dock I was explaining in the previous post.
Has any one found the same problem, the line on the back?
EDIT: I think it's the borders of the battery because I can see similar lines in proper lightning around the dock pins.

I've found two small defects on the polycarbonate body: one near the 3.5mm jack plug, like a small imperfection such as if the body was hit by something thin like a blade, and another one almost invisible on the left side.. Oh, there is also a very little gray dot on the bottom, but this is really invisible to the most people

The moulding of these cases is really not all that precise but also partly due to the fact that the casing is heated to "glue" bits of plastic and components to the inside back of the case.
I have seen on the white version if you hold it under a spot light and look along its length so you can clearly see the matte mottled effect on the back...then slowly tip the phone back and forth and you will see two horizontal lines running left to right. One a bit above the HTC logo, and one near the speaker grill. It roughly conforms to where the battery is. I also notice that for the line above the HTC logo, towards the right, the moulding dips in ever so slightly. ONce again looking at the inside back, there is some kind of component fixed there. So the cases are just not that precise I'm afraid. Check some of the teardown pictures so you can see the inside of the back casing and you will understand what I mean. It is not just a shell, but an intricate moulding of internal bits as well.
When I first noticed this I was worried if the polycarbonate case was melting due to the heat in the phone. But I googled and found that polycarbonate doesn't start becoming soft until at least 130 degrees C, so it isn't going to be melting!
Your post made me feel better now

Squeeky/Creaky Moto 360?

I just got the Moto 360 Stone grey from BB and I found it sounds really squeaky when putting it on or taking it off or pretty much any time the band touches or has some form of pressure against the lip on the bottom of the 360. It makes the moto seem cheap cause it sounds like a cheap plastic toy.
Does anyone else have that issue with it? I also have 2 stuck pixels so I have to go through a return process.... But just wanted to see if that squeaky/creaky thing is normal or if I just got a bunk unit.
Thanks

Yup my black 360 squeaks and creaks the same way. Even when touching the screen it will creak. Thinking of getting the Pebble Steel band and hopefully that will quiet it down...

Crap well that sucks. It really makes the watch sound and seem cheap.
Anyone else care to weigh in? Could it be cause the leather is new or is that how it sounds even after weeks of use?

damn I hope it isn't a problem with the plastic back... I really wished they used some type of stronger material than plastic for the back or a higher end plastic cause all this cracking and squeaking is a problem..
No sound from my black one so far.
Got a black one over a week ago because it was the only one I could find. No sweeks, noises or problems.
Just got a Stone gray on Monday. It does squeak/creak fresh out of the box.
The black leather felt softer, less stiff when compared to the Stone.
While I haven't compared them side by side, I think the black band might also be thinner.
The leather band on mind squeaks but that is what leather does.

No not like a squeaky toy when your wearing it and pretty any movement you make makes some type of small to loud squeak. How is that normal or tolerable in a watch? Especially if you're trying to be in a quiet environment.
I found that its the band rubbing against the inner slot of the watch that seems to cause the squeaking. I'm gonna contact motorola and see what they say if not just return it to best buy cause they don't have any in stock

Lol. You can't please everyone. Leather makes these noises, it will go away over time.
It probably got dust in there or something, the friction is what makes the squeak.
You guys just need to remove the band and clean where it touches the watch body, if it still squeaks try a bit of baby powder :good:

So when I got my replacement and it didn't squeak so my concern was definitely not me not being "pleased" it was a defective watch overall it had dead pixels, a squeaky band and the button felt mushy. The black one I have now is solid no squeak at all the button clicks and one extremely small dead pixel off near the edge that can only be seen on a dark screen on full brightness if you're close looking at it, but seeing as they are so hard to find and I got lucky with this one I don't mind it.

I know a bit of a Necro on this thread but I thought I would share my experience since I recently did 2 repairs on N5s (one Black one Red). The 2 LCD+Frames I bought from 2 different sellers had the speaker grill sunk in a bit on the front like the glass is thicker. Also on the Red one the grill was sort of a Metallic Red as opposed to the solid Plastic BRIGHT RED on the original. As for issues I ran into the Power button hole being off causing the button to get stuck and not reset fully. It'll be sunk in after pressing it the first time and be slightly raised from the frame. On the 1st one I had to do the "Button Rattle Fix Mod" to get it to seat repeatedly but that still wasn't quite right. On the Red one I fixed I had the same issue with the Power Button and I figured out what was causing the issue. It's actually 2 things: the opening height was just a slight bit smaller than the button itself and caused it to stick in the pressed position and also the seat was raised causing the button to become dislocated in an angular position. Once I figured this out I shave a very TINY fraction of the plastic away from those effected areas and BAM it works like it was an OEM one. As for the Grill I don't know how to fix that other than lifting the Glass from the Frame and I seriously don't want to do that.
I have the Black one (The 1st one I did coming back to me so I'll see if I can post a Vid of the effected areas.

Glad you got it fixed. As for the Power button Yeah that is the same issue I was having. See if you can trim a very tiny amount off the long edges of the hole. That should take care of it. I think it's a common manufacturing defect on the generic ones. Even if you got it from the UK chances are they got a bulk amount from China and just resell them. My black one I ordered was that way as the seller was definitely in the US. But both had the same problems.
Where did u get it from? Link and price if possible please. And was there black available?

Accessories Standing cover with Pen

Got my case today and it's OK, but a couple of gripes. There is zero protection for the hinge. Drop it on edge and no safety net. Given that's kind of the heaviest area when folded seems likely to be what hits the concrete on a drop.
The front cover seems to slide around a bit if you put edge pressure on it.
While wireless charging works with the stand slotted, the pen holder prevents it from getting close enough to charge.
Also a bit too bulky to feel natural in the hip pocket with the pen slotted in, though I expected that. The pen is for travel and meetings so I won't have it attached all the time.
The back of the case shows fingerprints almost as bad as the screens do.
*EDIT* And finally I just noticed - the stand is really only useful when folded and in landscape mode. Otherwise you might as well just lay the phone down it leans back so far.
The gray-green of the case is definitely the color I expected the phone to be, so it's not a match to the phone case gray color, but the phone color is only really visible around the power button.
Sorry for potato photos, the only thing I had handy to shoot with was my Surface Duo 1.0.

I was able to chose the color in the US.
One thing I do like about the pen attachment; when the pen is installed with the phone open and the power and volume buttons ot the top, I can slide the pen out a couple inches and with my left hand I can completely hold the open phone. The pen slides between my middle and pointer fingers and the phone balances while open and is weildable.
Maybe I should add a photo?
