[Q] How do I unlock my phone on 4.3? Is there a rom I can install to unlock it? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Is there? Sorry for posting again. I just want to unlock my phone so badly.

I have seen a number of the more experienced forum members answer this by saying that once you are on 4.3 with the official MJB bootloader you will need to use one of the pay services to sim unlock your phone.

Not without putting out the dollars.

I have read that some XDA members that are using the i747 with AT&T were able to get the unlock code for free directly from AT&T..

You can request the unlock code via this URL ...https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/
I haven't had any luck with them though using this request form as each time I've tried it's been with a phone I purchased from the secondary market and then they reply that the details on record don't match mine. Congress recently approved a bill making it legal to unlock your phone and I understand the new bill also includes a provision allowing third-parties who obtain the phone legally to request the unlock code. So perhaps things will be easier for everyone when the new bill becomes law and takes full effect.

I hope AT&T is cooperative. I am still able to go back to 4.1.1 on my SGS3 to unlock, but I never unlocked my Captivate - which is still functional. I keep it as a backup. It would be nice to have it unlocked.

How were you able to go back to 4.1.1? Right now im on 4.3 and people are saying not to downgrade or it'll brick your phone. All I wanna do is go back to 4.1.1 to unlock my phone and upgrade to 4.3.

Been perusing them for a bit. Not having much luck implementing for the moment. I think that is because I didn't have a sim in the phone. It's not a big issue to me at the moment. As a backup phone I don't actually need to unlock if I go with AT&T or even if I switch it to Straight Talk. Of course, it would need to be unlocked to use other prepaid options. Anyway, I subscribed to the threads I will revisit when necessary.

T-Mobile S4 - Bootloader Locked or Unlocked?

I'm on T-Mobile's website ready to order the S4 but I just want to know before I do if anyone knows for sure whether T-Mobile will lock the bootloader like AT&T.

Check post #3, he says his is unlocked using the motochopper.
Obtaining root is not related to the bootloader in any way.
According to this article - http://www.xda-developers.com/android/official-and-confirmed-att-galaxy-s-4-is-bootloader-locked/ - start of paragraph 3 - it's unlocked.
Still waiting for confirmation.

Most likely that may have been in one of my posts.. at the time AT&T _did_ have a verifiable bootloader (I wouldn't call it locked, per se; it just checks the boot and recovery images to make sure it's AT&T approved and is good on their network. and if AT&T images aren't used (or otherwise fooled), it'll result in a brick).
and that's awesome that the motochopper can be used to unlock bootloaders now.. motorola xoom (IIRC) all over again...

Motochopper is a root exploit. It does not unlock bootloaders.
Can anyone confirm this 100% one way or the other?

[Q] Will installing a custom ROM on a T-Mobile S4 unlock it

I've just gotten a T-Mobile S4, I've already tried the easy unlocking instructions with no luck. If I install one of the custom ROMs on the phone will this automatically unlock it so that I can use it with another carrier's sim card?
No
There's places only that you can get unlock code for cheap. Like $5-$10
You don't need an unlock code. There are guides here to do it for free

You will never be able to unlock the bootloader on that phone, unless your carrier can give you some kind of code to change your unlock status (not sure this is even possible).

The BL is different, if it came from O2 then chances are you cant unlock the BL.
So there is no chance? It worked with xperia arc and omnius. Costs about 15$, that would be ok. But will it work with our z1c in the near future? Or is it just "luck" to find an exploit?

Well nothing is impossible, but it isn't likely as it requires a bootloader exploit. Realistically it isn't going to happen though, unless some smart people devote a lot of time to it. The most likely scenario (using test point to gain more software access) would require hardware tampering.
Hello Mentalghost,
Unfortunately there is no way to unlock the bootloader when the status is "No".

Or wait for locked bootloader versions or someone makes modded version with unlocked rom that is been modded like one where you install modded that is unlocked install and then can unlock bootloader did in xperia s I use to have was a modded rom that was originally saying bootloader unlock no and added new Base rom and then said bootloadr unlock yes maybe this will happen on this phone in time or locked bootloader kernels and rom come along

Plus, there will be no solution. The reason why Xperia Arc S and other 2011 Xperias worked with testpoint method was because of that there was a big security flaw in the security of the testpoints nand access, but those flaws have been fixed in newer Xperias and newer 2011 Xperias also.

+1 It was coming to that realization that I sold my O2 locked Z after 6 months to buy an unbranded Z1 Compact. It worked out cheaper too spending hundreds of pounds up front for my Phone with the added bonus of having access to all of it.
What happens if you still follow the instructions on how to do it? I didn't check if it was allowed and I'm stuck in bootloop and I can't flash via flashtool,

I find it odd that the key was already turned. Normally they have the door locked but give you the key to use if you so choose. Honestly the way this phone came out without any kind of safety for the boot partitions is asking for a malicious app/virus to brick phones. Unless purple Drake did the factory unlock but I don't think they stated that.

Yeah and you know this might sound silly but I wonder if anyone has tried the normal unlock commands in fastboot for the other phones. Development isn't booming like on samsung or htc phones so you never know. Pretty sure somebody out there has tried I mean somebody had to right? Maybe Ill try to lock my bootloader in fastboot and see what happens. I would like to have it locked when I'm not modding that's just good practice.
*Edit
locked bootloaders and encrypted bootloaders are different just wanted to make sure everyone reading this that didn't know that now knows.
As always people keep getting confused between sim unlock and bootloader unlock.

The D851 variant ships with an unlocked bootloader, but SIM-locked to T-Mobile. Just to make it 100% clear.

Unlocking T-Mobile M9 phone?

I have a question and could find an answer, well maybe a few... First if you have an unlocked version of the m9 directly brought from HTC all updates come from them not any carriers? With that being said if you by a T-Mobile version and get an unlock code from them will updates still come from them or HTC?

HTC updates the phones sold through HTC. Any phone with carrier branding has HTC submitting their software to the carrier, and then it's released after carrier approval. It makes no difference if the phone is locked, unlocked, used on a different network, etc.
The only way you can go about getting updates directly from HTC in the past is through S-Off and a CID change, effectively changing your device ID, but A: I'm not sure if this is still the case and B: If you're asking the question that you asked, this is going to be a bit too complicated for me to explain at the moment. So the simple answer is No.

If you unlock the phone you will have to manually update the phone. If you stay stock you will get updates from T-Mobile, although they will lag the official (and XDA unofficial) releases by a substantial time.
Most folks unlock because they want to flash a custom ROM anyway, and will get updates on that ROM, rather than HTC or T-Mobile.

hmmmmm actually depends on which UNLOCK. If he meant unlocking it to make it carrier free but leaving everything stock then it'll update automatically. If he unlocks the bootloader but still remains stock without changing anything then it'll be auto still. I believe the only time you need to manually update is when you alter the recovery partition of the phone (installing custom recovery CWM/TWRP/etc) which means you'll probably run a custom rom, which also prevents automatic updates.

I'm assuming he meant unlock the bootloader, not the carrier. But I personally would not go to the trouble of unlocking the bootloader unless I was going to go custom ROM.

yeah I got that, but he said unlock code and from T-mobile so I deduced it to carrier unlocking lol.
Well I actually already unlocked the boot loader and using custom ROMs so not that be of a deal more so for my understanding. So if everything was stock and just got an unlock code from T-Mobile to unlock the device and say used the phone on AT&T or Verizon where would the updates come from ? The carrier you are on at the time or HTC?

You are not going to get updates for a T-Mobile phone while on an AT&T network, even if you stayed stock. I don't think the download would work, and even if it did the ROM would not work with your variant. I think they will detect that your phone is not AT&T and not even offer the update.
It sounds like you have installed a custom ROM. In that case you won't get OTA at all, from anywhere; you simply update the ROM when the developer releases a new version.
