YAY! And only several months away...

Yeah, that is quite a long time from now. Does anyone know how to get in touch with Sonic to see if he still has the Java card? He hasn't been on the forums in a couple months.

better late than never?

For sure! I am not a dev so I respect anyone who works on our devices so I am def not being impatient just was joking a little...

justin (@jcase) is a great mobile security researcher and developer of many Android exploits, I've been followed his work for quite some time now. Although the tweet didn't say it was specifically for the HTC One, the thought of 4.4.2 being able to root is a HUGE step forward for those that are stuck on the OTA.

Oh, absolutely. I am glad someone was working on it and finally achieved root. I am jumping the gun here assuming HTC sends me back my HTC One with 4.4.2 anyways. Really hoping its anything but!

The 2 people that I know that sent their phones in, both received an HTC One with 4.2.2
(through VZW CLN program)
i dont know what Asurion is replacing theirs with.

I sent mine directly to HTC. Most people seem to get theirs back with 4.3, but 4.4.2 is readily available now. I am hoping I get it back with 4.3. I did have S-OFF on 4.4.2, but I RUU'd back to stock 4.2.2 after hearing HTC denied the warranty claim on a user who was S-OFF.

I hope my next device that HTC is mailing out to me will not be on 4.4.2. The one I got that had the terrible purple/pink tint came as 4.2.2. Hopefully another exploit is found as 5 months on stock would be torture .

Does this mean S-off vulnerability as well or only root without S-off?
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk 2

By itself it means root only. But once you have root that means firewater will then work for s-off, as temproot is what is failing for firewater on our bootloader.

Hey everyone, I am a complete Noob to the One and HTC devices in general (I've been using Nexus devices for a while) so please bear with me. I picked up a HTC One that should be here shortly and I was researching rooting and ROMs, which brought me here. It sounds like 4.4.2 cannot be rooted due to the new bootloader lock, but I came across two links that say that the One on 4.4.2 can be unlocked at HTCdev.com, and another that says the rumrummer tool now works. So I'm just looking for some clarification on what I can expect when the phone gets here. Do those methods work at all?

No at the moment no current method available works on 4.4.2. However a new exploit is set to be released in early august.

Don't wait to root. You may lose the opportunity. Root isn't guaranteed. Especially with every update.

is this post development related at all? as in is this a rom/mod/kernel/think tank post? no
read through the other threads and posts before making another super awesome thread like this
jmaddox31,
1.) Your post doesn't belong here in the development section. It doesn't really belong anywhere on the site as it has no value.
2.) We're waiting for you to root the device and post procedures on how to do it. You aren't done yet? It only took 2 days for the Thunderbolt. You are pretty lazy for not having it rooted yet.
3.) We are not your trained monkeys and you are not paying anyone (I just checked my Paypal). So go back and quietly sit in the corner.
PS: Mr Clown, could you close & trash this thread, please?
this phone will most likely never be rooted... by software anyhow.. might have to return it for a tbolt.
Why wont it be rooted??

1) we had the thunderbolt for months before the release, we were familiar with it when it was released.
2) We perm rooted it on release day, s-off on day 2.
Thunderbolt was a similar situation, however because we were able to locate firmware vulnerable to scotty2's wpthis exploit, we we able to downgrade, then replace the bootloader.
We don't have this option on inc2, yet.
I have a inc2 eng hboot, and once a way to write it is found, we will have s-off root.

if raskal comes up with inc2 support i can S-OFF and jcase said he'd help from there getting and RUU and making a recovery.

although it doesnt say this when unlocking the phone, it does however say in their warranty statement that the warranty is still intact for problems not caused by unlocking the bootloader. feel free to check it out..
not to say you won't have to argue with them to get a free repair, but if you persisted you should be able to get it
i had to wait until couple of days ago to root (had hox since launch) as i've been waiting to get the phone actually fixed first from wifi issues etc so hopefully won't actually need the warranty now.. and IF the worst happened and there was no way i could get htc to repair without conning me, then vodafone would repair themselves under the seller warranty. failing all of that, then i could just claim on insurance i guess. but to be honest htc would probably end up reparing anyways.

yeah or unrepaired, took me 4 months and 6 different hoxs and 2 failed repair jobs, then the final repair job which finally sorted everything
shouldn't be this bad, but its the companies htc are contracting out to do this, not htc to be fair. htc should fire em and use someone else.
anyway, although you shouldn't have to, just persist with them, if they send it back in worse condition, then send it back to them again and again until they get it right.
most recent repair job for me, they had it for 2 days, and repaired several issues, both times before when i sent it to them, they had it for longer, and only reflashed software, so maybe over last couple of months they've sorted their procedures or somethign...
Are you having issue's in Europe or the USA returning your HOX ?

Just wanted to shed some positive info since it is most likely the case that only negativity is more ominous than positive results.
In my case I unlocked my phone, rooted , a week later I realised I have a WiFi issue. Couldn't help but think damn I'm screwed. Sent in my phone rooted with supersu and a custom ROM (ADHD) at that time, got my phone fully functional after two weeks. No warranty lost and all good and well. Not saying your experience will be the same. But up to you I'm the long run. I love taking risks .. part of my personality

Are there devs getting closer to root/unlock?

I don't want to sound impatient or anything because I'm not I love my htc one as is but am just curious if any devs are getting closer to a unlock or root without the s-off tool. I've seen that there is a large bounty right now so I feel there should be devs at least trying to figure out something but it seems like I'm not seeing much info. anywhere and am only seeing people using s-off cards and stuff and I can't send my phone off. Any ideas?

There are multiple posts scattered here and there that hint/speculate that an exploit has been found and the devs are waiting on 4.3.
If you don't want to wait then send your phone off for S-Off, but please don't rush the devs. The exploit will come when it comes.
Can we lock this yet?
Just hold on tight, it will be here soon!
There is an exploit floating around, but it needs work.

Exactly why bounties are a horrible idea IMHO. Donating for people's efforts is one thing, but bounties are almost always counterproductive unless someone already has an exploit that they don't want to burn.

Why? Not "burning" exploits is a damn good idea. What happens when, lets say, the exploit was released now and then HTC took an extra week to patch it? Like getting insurance or warranty replacements? Too bad we wasted the exploit. Look what happened with the DNA and 2.04. It is literally the best idea to wait until the OTA comes out. This way, the majority of users get s-off and HTC will have a harder time patching it.

i remember picking the dna up in april and it immediatly took the update for 2.04 then it took the 2.06 one. only a couple months went by and they came out with moonshine on linux then a window's version came out. i returned my phone back to stock to get 4g back and then i used the window's way. it is great to wait for the ota like you said so many more android's can get unlocked or s-off!!! :good:

No update for me checking manually. When it does come through, we can pull the update.zip and post it here and make a flashable update for those of us unlocked and still on Sense.

So what's the bottom line for those of us with locked-down phones? If we still hold out hope for an exploit, even after 4.3 drops, is it advisable to refuse this OTA when it shows up on our phones?

Yes, defer the OTA as long as possible until we know that there is indeed no pending exploit waiting until after 4.3 release.
Nobody take it. You do not know what they fixed or if HTC found some exploit already.
When they say they will include ISIS, is that with tap and pay? From the other thread I had come to understand tap to pay would not work because we do not have a Secure Element in our NFC, unless you get a SIM with this included. Or is ISIS different?
IF you want a CHANCE at root
do NOT take ANY OTA..
Rule of thumb
I have two wishes from this update.
1. Fix the camera.
2. A Dev ports it for us people who are S-OFF'd or rooted.
edit: Or I guess I could have read the patch update text from Androidpolice.com. Boo.
Camera fix isn't until 4.3 update according to HTC.

Don't companies sometimes do a small update before a major one to help prepare your device? I seem to remember that happening for a different phone back in the day. Maybe this is a pre 4.3 update.

When they say they will include ISIS, is that with tap and pay? From the other thread I had come to understand tap to pay would not work because we do not have a Secure Element in our NFC, unless you get a SIM with this included. Or is ISIS different?

In all likelihood, you already have one. Unless you're using a SIM from your phone from like two years ago, its been replaced. My GN had a secure SIM in it. Here's an article describing it: LINK Then of course, from what Ive read ISIS still only works reliably in the test markets in Utah and Texas.
Bell/Virgin Mobile and Tellis Mobile in Canada got carrier otas today. (not 4.3 ).

Hopefully 4.3 will come soon, then HOPEFULLY S-OFF and root

Its entirely possible. I don't think we'll see the 4.3 update for 2-3 weeks. I'm going to be sending my phone to sonic tomorrow after work so I won't have to worry about losing root but I wouldn't accept the update until after 4.3 is released if you want to have a chance at exploits.

From what I read, I think it will be a few months minimum before we see 4.3. VZW is like a snail with releasing stuff.

Currently you have to be on 4.2.2 in order to use rumrunner to gain s-off. Sounds like we'll have an updated method soon, though.

Nope. Unless s-off there is no way to downgrade short of a jtag

I'm not sure when the new method of s-off will be available, but your best bet would be not to take the 4.4 update from Verizon since you can't downgrade like the previous post mentions.

Where to find new method when available?

Right, if you're on 4.3 you're stuck for now. It will posted in the Original Android Development section when it's ready. The instructions for the method will be in the thread when it's posted.

I had a similar problem. Just get into a live chat with a customer service rep and say the phone hasn't been working properly since the update. They ship out phones with 4.2.2!

It won't be long until we get s-off for 4.3. I did the replacement thing, but the phone had gaps and didn't line up...had the camera issue too. I sent it back. I'd rather have my original phone over a refurb. Just my .02 though.

In case you haven't seen it by now, the new S-Off program is called firewater, and you can follow them on twitter @firewaterdevs. They have posted a video of it in action on youtube. Lets keep our fingers crossed that it is released soon.

It's tough to say... the S4 got the 4.3 update before any other carrier surprisingly. Whether or not that was just a mad push to sell more Galaxy Gear I dunno, but perhaps their updates are starting to roll out quicker these days.

Probably a ploy to push out the Galaxy Gears. Verizon is all about $$$$$.

Perhaps. In my eyes all the carriers are all about the $$$$$.
On the other hand you would think Verizon wouldn't make such foolish decisions such as delaying the One for FIVE MONTHS. I bet they lost tons of money trying to sell their crappy Droid lineup and failing miserably. They also delayed the S4 by about a month behind other carriers. I really don't know what goes through their head honestly. Whatever it is, it's not intelligence...
