Try holding power and volume up button together until you feel 3 vibrations. Failing that, hard reset by pushing the little red button by the side of the SIM card slot under the flap.

Z1 compact refuses software shut down
I never ever managed to turn my Z1 Compact off the by using the default method (hold power button until shutdown menu appears) However I do get a visual on this operation but after poking turn off nothing happens. I also upgraded to official Kitbag but that did not resolve this issue. The only (known) method to shut down is powerbutton on the side combined with volume up/down. I feel that this isn't a clean modus operandi and call for assistance here among others.

Just to let you all know in case of nothing works, there is a physical Hard Reset button to use.

This was a bug that mine suffered from after upgrading to kitkat despite a full wipe. The thing that fixed it for me was to do a Repair using the Sony PC Companion. I wrote about my experience here.
Of course, the long press power button menu is SUPPOSED to work. Any of the above workarounds are just that, I wasn't happy until I fixed it (as well as all the other problems I was having).

WHAT IS SOFT KEY?
This can be tricky, So I know from trial and error, Since there are not many guides out there that explain in detail on how to do this, with this particular device, I have decided to go ahead and make one up for you guys.
Here are the steps:
Step One:
Preform power down *Hold the power button* Till the phone is 100% powered down and all you see is a black screen
*keep in mind if your device is plugged into a power source or computer link this will not work!*
Step Two:
(Use both hands while doing this it will be much easier!)
Place 1 finger on each of the Soft keys.

}
Step Three:
Press the power Button and hold for no more than 2 sec well holding the two soft keys (do not hold the power button till the phone turns on) ONLY PRESS THE POWER BUTTON DO NOT TURN THE PHONE ON. After pressing the power key keep your fingers on the Two Soft keys until you see a the phone turn on and a black screen come up with white writing. Once you see this screen Press the Green Send key and there you go you have just performed a hard reset on the T-Mobile dash without using the settings screen on the phone. 8)
this is solution can reset user code t-mobile dash ???
tell me thanks a lot

Smashed on/off button solution?

Hi guys, I am not sure if it's the place I should post this, if not mods plz move my thread to the appropriated message board.
Recently my phone fell off my desk head on. Right on the top of the phone. Now the button on/off is not functioning. I can still use the phone but as soon as it close the screen I can't light it up again. In the options I manage the let the screen open at all time but...
Bell is asking for a couple hundred bucks for repair or couple hundred to cancel my contract.
I was wondering if it was possible to some how make the camera button the on/off fonction.
I haven't open the phone yet (screws) to check the damage internally, I may be able to fix it but I doubt it.
I'll post pictures later tomorrow.
Do you guys have any ideas?
yes, check out AE button plus, you can't set it to power on the phone however you can set it to power the screen on and off. However to turn the screen on with a button other then the power button you must change the settings in key lock under settings/system/key lock you must set it do not lock buttons, otherwise no button will function, the only thing is that your call end buttons work as well.
get AE button plus
set whatever button to power on/off the backlight
disable key lock on screen power off
good luck
wow jeez thx.
I had a very hard time to find it for free so here's the cab

[Q] Broken Home Button

I was playing with my phone the other day and the home button and the search buttons suddenly stopped working. Totally out of the blue.
I have tried different ROMs, and they started working again for an hour or so and then stopped again. The keytest in recovery registers the key presses.
What do you think may be wrong?
It's probably hardware, there have been other reports of buttons that stop functioning, run a search and you'll find them.
Repair is the only solution I guess.
I doubt its hardware, I tried setting the volume up button to the hone function with an app, but that does nothing either.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I hope it's not hardware too but this kind of complaint isn't the first

...and others.
Can you access the *#*#3424#*#* test menu. If you can run the button test.
Another think you may try, is booting in safe mode to check if they would work then.
If you cant get it working take a look at this.
Edit: This app has just been released on the market, search for 'button savior'.
The app was made for the HD2 but is working fully on my desire running cyanogenmod, haven't tried any other roms.
I hope you get it working and don't need it though

Some success, I installed CM 6.1 and had my home and search buttons back. THEN, I restored a bunch of apps with titanium backup, I soon restarted my phone and bam, buttons no longer function on the reboot.
My problems don't seem to be the same as the above links, keytest in recovery has no problems with the buttons, they have not been playing up over a long period of time, and they are not erratic. They either work or they do not.
I suppose I should uninstall apps till I find the culprit?
I can't think of a better fix than that, might take a while but at least you should be with a fully functioning phone in the end
Probably it's better to first install the quality apps that you know are not causing the issue, and then install one by one apps that are from not so renowned devs.

you think xperia arc s ics upgrade will add instant camera shoot from standy??

like the new xperia s when you press the camera button from standby,
you think its software or hardware?
Maybe it can be included in a custom rom but in my opinion it's not really useful.
im not quite sure for this .i think this is software ,because we can use Power button to restart the phone
Obviously it is a software work up !!!
Software
This is software.
any camera improvement in ICS
I want to know if there is any camera improvement in ICS. I mean if the drivers for camera have been updated to create better quality pictures (lower compression rate).
Thanks in advance!

not useful? most impressive feature i saw in a phone to date i think!
well if it is software do you think sony will just add it? or we'll have to wait for the developers to add it?
my white xperia arc s with instant shoot camera... from a great phone camera it will become an amazing phone camera !! [=
Why don't we simply make an official petition to KalleD (sony developer) to include this function in the next arc s release???Here's the official ICS beta thread opened by KalleD...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513172
I suggest to try their beta and compile this survey asking for this function
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/L2GLNHH
or to write a post in that thread.I've already compliled the survey asking for this function, hope you will do the same.
I think Sony is getting ready to release the ICS update in these days, because the update to .62 isnt available anymore (OTA)
You can get to the camera from the lockscreen. If you press home or power key in ICS beta, then press camera button without unlocking the phone, you go the camera too, or just move the slider to the left.

@sdk16420 so does this mean you now have to unlock the phone and go to settings (or a widget) to turn on silent?
I think sony could implement the camera key activating the camera on the arc, because the button is already quite awkward to press, so it wouldn't be caused my accidental presses in the pocket. But I'm guessing they wont as to keep the Xperia S having a feature worth upgrading too...
No you can hold the power button from the lockscreen to access the sound settings.

[Q] Note 10.1 2014 edition keys do not answer

Hi. My new Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition has a major problem: the Home button and back and menu buttons stop working from time to time. Same thing with the on off button that refuses to turn the tablet off. Happens randomly, whenever the pen is in or out. To turn off, I have to plug the tablet on charger, then hold the on-off button for many seconds. Rather annoying. Had the same problem with my other 10.1 2014.... that I scraped trying to change the battery. Any help will be welcome.

Hi,
Mine has the same issue. Reckon it is a factory defect.
However, I'm using Settings -> Device -> Accessibility -> Assistant menu.
With this function, found no problem to navigate around.
Or,
You can use "Pie Control (Pro)" app or "OmniSwitch" app
in order to use the softkey buttons.
Hope this is helpful for you.

YES! Thank you, it works. When I think that when the first 2014 edition had that problem, I was convinced it was a battery defect and I ordered one new. I opened the case following the instructions, but I was unlucky and I broke the connector behind the Home button. Then, trying to unbend (?) the bottom section, il really broke. I now have two spare batteries... Next time, I'll ask the specialists.
