[Q] Gmail 4.7.2 FC's. Can't get it working. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

So my Gmail app started to FC today when I open it. I tap the icon and it just doesn't start. However, I still get notifications that emails are coming through and I can still delete them through the notification panel as usual.
So far, I've tried clearing data, clearing cache, wiping dalvik and cache with twrp, and also fixing permissions with twrp.
The only way it works is if I uninstall updates and revert back to the old Gmail.
If I logon to Gmail on my computer and delete new messages, the little notification badge (in Nova Launcher) reflects the changes.
It was working fine until today, not quite sure what happened.
Any ideas?

Are you using a themed gmail? If so, chances are it was resigned by the Dev... and it won't play well with the latest Google Play Services update (4.3.x). Check to see if your Google Play Services updated... if so, just roll back to v4.2.43 (uninstall updates.. then restore 4.2.43 via TiBu). You will probably have to do this again when Play Services updates again. See this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51359618

Thanks for the info!
No I'm not using a themed Gmail, just the standard. My play services are also up to date (4.3.24).
Would I benefit from clearing the play services data and cache?
Edit:
Oh wait, I think that fixed it. I reverted back to the stock version of play services (1.0.xx), opened Gmail successfully, then reinstalled 4.3 from the link in that thread. Gmail still opens post update.
Thanks for the tip, it definitely saved me a bunch of aggravation!

Update:
It was working, then an email came in. I opened the email from the notification bar and it just broke again.

Here's Google Play Services v4.2.43. ... try this one

Thank you kind sir, 4.2 seems to be working as of now. Sent myself a test email and it didn't break anything.
I guess Gmail isn't playing well with 4.3 at the moment, wonder why...

np... glad you got it working. It's odd that 4.3 Play Services breaks authentic GMail. Keep that 4.2.43 version handy as you may need it again if Play Services auto updates again to 4.3

Yup, definitely.
I wasn't even aware that play services even updated. I can't seem to find a changelog either on it.
I hope Google gets around to fixing the issue on the next release though!

device suddenly incompatible with a bunch of apps

Hi guys,
Weird thing happened today, I was checking the Play store app for updates, there were about 10 of them.
I didn't update anything at the time.
About 10-20 minutes later I check again and I only see 3 updates available... when I search for those missing updates on the play store, the apps don't even come up. When I look on the play store on the PC, I see that all those apps (which are all already installed, from the play store) as being incompatible with my device... both free and paid apps.
I rebooted, cleared cache/davlik, but still the same..
do you know what went wrong, and what I can do?
Perhaps they're not compatible with 4.2.1 yet?

nah that's not it, I mean I was seeing an update for Beautiful widgets, which I have been using since 4.2 and when I check now there is no update, I can't find the app on the play store, and on PC it says it's incompatible... and eventhough it's installed on my phone, it doesn't show in the list of installed apps in the play store app. Yet I can still access the widgets and add more to my screen...

I am on Paranoid Android, I was on 720px / 220 dpi (for a very long time, and never had problems), the first thing I did was reset everything back to default. Still no go
BW is running fine on my GNex, running a custom build of MoDaCo's MCR - all stock values, of course!
well in the end there was an update to my ROM so just dirty flashed along with gapps and it seems back to normal.. weird what happened, but oh well.
Thanks for the help guys

This one?
I guess you'll have to wait:
NOTE: If you aren't yet able to install Hangouts on your phone or tablet, or the Play Store "Open" button takes you to the old Talk app, hang tight, we are rolling out Hangouts to everyone over the course of several days. Rest assured Hangouts will be available soon for all Android 2.3+ devices, tablets included!

If you really want to install the Google Play Services, then here is the link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.gms&hl=en
I deinstalled it a week ago with a bunch of other apps, because my battery was draining really fast. I couldn't find it via the Play Store app, but was able to install it via the link above. (and deinstall it afterwards, because i don't need it )
I do have this problem that Talk was preinstalled and the "Open" button in the Play Store takes me to Talk instead of Hangouts, but i didn't need the Google Play Services app for it.

[Q] Disable "Update Maps" prompt

I am sadly very disappointed with the latest Google Maps update for lots of reasons. I've uninstalled the update and gone back to the previous version.
All well and good. But it keeps promoting me that there's an update available via the notification bar. Also I can't do "Update All" in Play Store or I'll end up with the updated, rubbish Maps.
Can I stop this somehow? So far I've tried unlinking Maps from the market using Titanium Backup, but it just relinks itself.
Thank you!

In playstore setting there is an option to disable notification for updates but not sure if it's really work

And what's with the July updates? My Play Store has updates from Maps, Facebook, The Score and 3 games sitting there because the reviews all reveal problems & horrible bugs in the latest updates! :-/

Google Market. Updates cause problems on some custom themed ROM's "X stopped"
This is something I didn't know and this post has helped me fix Google Apps that stopped working.
wackydroid said:
It's not the Gmail app itself, ROM or Store version. It's Play Services.
The Gmail fix is relatively simple and works every time (so far, I, and 6 of my friends, have used it):
Settings > App Manager > All > Google Play Services
Undo all updates. It will tell you it's installing the "factory" version of it. Hit OK.
Gmail (black Rom version) will [should] work.
Then, I went into Google Play Store settings and UNchecked all auto-updates so they can't slam me into non-working updates anymore.
When you run Maps and a few other Google apps, it'll put a little alert on your Noti Bar that the app NEEDS the newer version of Services...it doesn't...they all work perfectly so ignore the warning until a new Services gets released.

The only issues I still run into is Google now and YouTube won't work with the factory services anymore. I got other apps for YouTube so that's not really an issue but I've started to like Google now lately.

Latest Google play stock on white screen fire os 4.6.1

The screen is stuck on a white loading screen, Google play services still work and if you install an older playstore it automatically gets updated in the background to the later version , so unless the next play store update fixes this issue or a workaround is found its back to sideloading apps , which I don't mind as long as Google services still work for youtube app and maps and other google apps, also if you use Google plus it works fine but notifications won't load from g+ which I'm guessing is related to Google play services as older versions of the app have the same problem , also if I uninstall the latest playstore apk and then reinstall it it works initially and then goes back to being stuck on the white loading screen , just a few observations

Just noted this as well. The fun part is i celebrated the 4.6.1 Update with ordering* 2 used firephones for dirt-cheap in new condition - which just arrived some minutes ago.
Can tell you, that's some big "F0ck you" i got just now.
I have to add that Google Hangouts sadly is also broken.
(*=because "Hey, i can get now google apps (and hangouts) working. This phone is now _flawless_")

I don't use hangouts, hopefully the next Google services update fixes the problem
I will +1 this issue. Better than the "Play Services has stopped responding" that I was getting before the 4.6.1 upgrade, but hopefully we can find a way around it...
A maybe possible "solution" that came up to me:
While still functioning (by freshly installing gplay services and gplay market), download _all the things(tm)_ you need.
Then try to get a working gPlay services apk, dump the - now by the update broken - gPlay services and gPlay market and install the working gPlay services, but leave out the market which would try to auto-update and flip **** again.
It's just a bad workaround. But if it might work, i'm fine with it. It's not like you have to browse the gPlay market every day.
So what Google play services did you install? I use hangouts everyday so I'd gladly give up the play store for hangouts

Would you not get the "This app needs an updated version of Google play services" error eventually
I removed Google Play Store and downgraded Google Play Services back to 4.4.52. The latest Google Play Services causes many issues like battery drain and force closes on Fire OS 4.6.1.
So I installed Google Maps 6.14.4 and it works perfectly with Google Now Launcher. The launcher works perfectly, even "OK Google" commands and wallpapers work. Google Drive, Sheets, Camera, Translate all work without the latest Google Play Services. Latest versions of Google Wallet and Google+ linking don't work without latest Play Services, I'll try older versions and update this thread.

I just found an _very_ ugly hack and might post soon if it's reproductive.
Confirmed to work: Hangouts, Maps, Youtube, Chrome (Chrome doesn't depend on the play services anyway.)

Well, that's bad. I can't delete my own comments.
It's like the same procedure _you_ explained in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60279359&postcount=13 - just a bit simpler.
The thing is, it won't survive a reboot and takes time, so it's useless. The sad thing is, that you don't even have to open the gPlay store. It will update itself, without having you open it.
Edit:
To answer your question:
- Reboot the phone, as any previous attempts to "repair" do interrupt the process
- Take ES File Explorer and install Google Play Services 7.0.99, like from as you provided here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60279359&postcount=13
- install any version of gPlay store, open up a google app - the gPlay store will automatically do an update of itself and gPlay services in the background
- go to the system settings and delete the gPlay store (no time to be lazy here, timing counts)
- you should now have a somewhat broken gPlay-services app that even allows to open (having you ignore the popup) and working gApps like Youtube or Hangouts.
And as mentioned before, a reboot - forced by a crash or done manually - will force you to redo the steps above.

Yes I realized with the play store after a RebootI thought I had it fixed also, I don't know any other solution until we get an updasee services and hope that fixes it.
Oh man so I can't restart my phone or I have to do it over... Hope this gets fixed soon...

This worked! Thanks! I usually don't reboot this phone so it should be good. I had to do this twice btw, but it finally stuck.
I have a 7.0.99 gplay Services on /sdcard/.. If i have to Reboot my Phone and Services updatet, i delete Services and install 7.0.99 + force stop play Store. One Minute to Do and PlayStore is working again. And gplay Services Not updating again until next Reboot.
If im going then to the PlayStore to play Services, i can update it If i want..

If I install the Google Play Services v7.0.99 and never reboot the Fire-Phone, the Google Play Store works flawlessly.

this is an update on what worked for me, so far so good.
download this
apkmirror.com/wp-content/uploads/uploaded/54dd7979177e8/com.android.vending-5.2.13-80321300-minAPI9.apk
uninstall all google apps framework, services, account manager
re-install everything according to the howto for non-root.
open play store sign in, then immediately un-install the store from phone then install the new vending app that I asked you to download.
I believe when you immediately uninstall the store it stops it from upgrading, and was able to install the updated store.
Hangouts may be
Latest google play store 5.4.12 works fine with play services 7.0.99
As long as you do not use hangouts (uninstall or force stop it) the play services stays at 7.0.99 and all the other things work well.
May be someone else can try this out.
I can probably stay away from hangouts until a working version of play services arrives.
I installed the PlayStore from crackberry board. This PlayStore cant self update. I hope He cant update Services too. I tried to Reboot 3 Times and is still working. Give your more Feedback tomorrow
