Messaging Popup? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since Sense 6's native messaging app doesn't have a built in popup notification (like CM, Handcent, Textra, ect), I'm looking for an alternative. Any suggestions? Every third party app I've tried is really outdated, and doesn't mark text as read because Kitkat 4.4 only allows the default messaging app to do that.

I used to cry out for people like HTC and Apple to include popup reply windows for SMS a few years back. Don't really care any more, though this might be because I use Whatsapp more than SMS. That includes a popup quick reply windows though and I never use it. The last one I did use was Chomp but that looks a bit dated now too. Suspect that development of SMS apps is slowing for whatever reason.

No, that's only for lockscreen

I did not see you mention GoSMS. Two popup options: the actual popup box, or a contact icon. Once you click-on the icon, the popup box shows up.

You should give a try to HoverChat.

Don't have the M8 yet but I currently use 8SMS on my S3 which does the trick, although i am on CM so I am not sure if it will do the same with Sense. I am hoping it will as I want this feature as well.
8SMS is great in general. Hope it works.

SMS popup app doesn't work? It works perfect for me on 4.4.2 using hangouts.

I use this on my Nexus 5 and I concur, works great. No lag either like GO or Chomp.

You could try evolveSMS.
I use it for 2 months snd really love it

Try GlowFly I've used it for a while now, never failed me.
It has a few plugins for things like missed calls.
(Can't say it will work on the HTC One (M8), but since I'm looking to get that phone I sure hope it does)

[Q] Updated MMS app that removes contact photos?

Havent been on XDA for a while, but I searched for an updated stock messaging app thats been edited to remove the contact photos from every line in a text conversation and havent found anything yet. Just wanted to see if anyone uses another stock version that has the quick reply popup and also sends/receives pictures or if there is another app from the Play store that doesnt eat battery.

Its nice, but it doesnt do the quick reply pop up over the stock lockscreen. Always have to unlock and go to messages to read/reply. Kinda why I want to stick with a modified stock that just gets rid of the stupid contact photos.

It may be good, but I'm always of the mind that if a native app does the trick without issues then why add apps that can misbehave or maybe cause battery drains. If I'm not happy with an app i look for a replacement but not if it works fine. That's just my preference.

Best messaging app on the market hands down. Simply, straight forward, and just the right touch of customization and intuitive UI.

Handcent for me. I have been using it for years. I like the customization by contact. You can have different notifications, fonts, backgrounds, sounds and vibrations for each individual. Very nice to know who texted you with customized notifications. I also like the Oops delay. You can set a lag from when you hit send until it sends.
All these features helps visually, physically and by sound who you are communicating with. Less likely to send the wrong text to the wrong person.

Sadly just using stock because at home I use WIFI calling all the time and stock is the only one that always works, all the time, with wifi calling.
But I do use SMS popup program so I get pop up notifications and a quick reply.

I use stock. When I had the Nexus 5 and the G2 (CM11), I had problems with Hangouts when receiving MMS and group texts.

I won't use anything from CM these days. Not after what they did to some developers when they became Cyanogen Inc. They basically stole work of other people and left them out to dry. I used to use nothing but CM now, it's just not for me anymore.
Hangouts
I use hangouts, and love how they integrate SMS and Chats.
I had a question though, is there any way our SMSes can be integrated with Gmail Chats?
i.e. If you chat normally on Hangouts, it shows up in Chat history in my Gmail when I see in the browser.
It will be very convenient to have my SMS show up there as well, can search, copy, paste, archive and backup easily.
Anyone else with same thoughts?

What text messaging application do you use?

What text messaging application do you use?
And why?
I personally keep stuff stock. If I use gpe I use hangouts if I use sense I use sense. I like keeping the same experience and change back and forth from gpe then to sense

for sms i use evolve, for messenger, i use telegram.
why? evolve works and has a nice ui. telegram because it's a very nice messenging app that offers both cloud messenging (meaning your conversation stay in cloud as to access via computer, phone, tablet) or self-destructing messages. also, comfortable after reading their privacy policy.

its a secret! I am so sorry.
Textra. Fast and no fuss but plenty of options.
And so it was
Hangouts
Hangouts because I have several friends and we join groups on top of using sms.
Hangouts still remains sluggish, though the interface is admittedly nice.
Recently, I've been trying out Hello SMS and like it a lot. Fast, sleek and very pretty to look at.
The real question is WHEN IS HANGOUTS incorporating Google Voice?!
Textra the best of them all

I use stock. I like how it looks like traditional online forums, where other's "posts" are highlighted and your reply to them is down there line by line, if you know what i mean.

Texting App.

Looking for an App that will inform me of how many texts I have on the home screen.
I use Nova Prime with Tesla unread count plugin and chompSMS. I have that.
Try textra it's the best SMS replacement tons of options, fast, and the unread badge included for free.

I installed Textra but never see texts notifications on the home screen App.
Handcent, the widget shows unread texts
As goofy as it sounds, the vzw messages+ app does it and much more. I am very surprised it's as robust as it is. But it's a great app! Actually best messaging I have ever used..

What features does it have, exactly? Currently running stock messaging and I'm loving the feature where there's your favorite contacts above the messages so you have immediate access.

hands down verizon messaging+ app..especially if you send a lot of mms over wifi
Using Textra here...
Wish I could use hangouts, but it's too laggy.

Your response prompted me to try it out. Really like what I'm seeing and will probably be using it for a while.
What is it that you don't like about Google hangouts? You can setup a Google voice number and text using that #, make wifi or data calls using for google voice number. Google hangouts does everything

Textra is the best app out there IMO. Send and receives pictures like a phone is supposed to (actually shows each picture as opposed to a Slideshow) has delay sending, and many other features. Fair warning though they are moving from a free app to paid. But totally worth it in every way.
Sent from my SM-N910V using XDA Free mobile app
Textra or Google Messenger I think are the two best.
I ended up sticking with Google Messenger because Textra seemed to have trouble with different DPI's which I found a little weird. I think it has a few extra features that make it better the GM if that's not an issue for you.
Agreed. Textra is awesome. I love using the "giphy" attachments.
Though I'm content with the stock messaging app, if I wasn't using it I'd be used Google Messenger. It's nice and clean and I actually like its simplicity

Textra probably is the best but there are a ton of bug reports everyday
