Yellow Tint - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone share with me what there screens are like. Mine appears decidedly yellow and im starting to worry that the screen is defective. My HTC One M7 has much bluer tones and I personally prefer it. My M8 just appears dirty!

Might be just me. Im really neurotic when it comes to my tech

I've also got this problem, it might not be that easy to see on the picture I've attached, but you can at least see that the colors are not the same. I've also tested the screen with an app called Screen test, and it seems to completely fail the Checker board test under Resolution and Horizontal resolution (1 pixel) makes the display flicker.

Yeah, but I'm not sure if it's due to the HTC Color Enhancement, or if the screen is bad. The stores says it's just a different color temperature on the screen.
The the light in the proximity sensors are IR captured by the camera, so I can't see it (except through another camera ofc)

Different panels!

Does HTC use panels from different manufacturers? Because I have two HOX right now, and I can see a BIG difference between the screens. One of them have much warmer colors and is at the same time brighter and have better viewing angels. Or can it really differ that much between screens with the same panel?
Anyway, will test if they have the same screen on time, and if they are made in different countries.
And finally here is some shots I took. The difference shows more IRL then the pics but atleast you can see there IS a difference.
Edit: I have now checked last_kmsg on both phones, and there are indeed two different panels! The warmer one have panel_id=0x294000f while the colder one have the same as some in this thread, panel_id=0x4940014...

Can you tell us the serial numbers on each one? It should be ht23 or ht24

It always happens with devices from HTC. There is a thread in Sensation forum for the same. There were two types of screens used for sensation(mainly) One from Acer and another sharp if i remember correctly. The Sharp made had yellow tint and less vivid. While Acer LCD had vivid but more of them had ghosting problems. You can check the Panel type in devices using same method i beleive.

How annoying, I hate products where it is a lottery if you get a good or bad panel.. And unfortunately there isn't anything about panel_id in dmesg on the One X. Anyone know another way to check, aside from taking it apart?
I have also seen that difference in display color, now I have my 2nd ONE X
same thing for me, first device was white with vivid color, 2nd is yellow with worse colors.
Also the serial number from my ONE X Grey starts with H23 and is made in Taiwan
Bugger! How is one supposed to know if they have an inferior display if you don't have another model to compare it with?
Just out of interest have you had any of the display issues that have been posted in the numerous threads on either display?
BTW, i was/am using Screen Adjuster to adjust the screen tone to my tastes. Its not a solution, however better than none. I didn't test it with my HOX yet. Should work.
Any of these has flex or flickering?

Yeah, the warmer one have had it ONE singel time, but it felt like a software glitch, with it "moving" the whole screen, so to speak. And both ofc have that problem with the notification bar, but that I know is software. Other than that I haven't seen any problems, yet.

Could be, but IRL I can't really see any difference in proximity to the surface. And would that really make the viewing angels worse? Because the cold one get noticeable darker from the sides while with the warm one you barely notice any difference.
I got a gray one on Friday and a white one today thinking I'd prefer white. The display on the gray one is startlingly perfect. I mean like “OMG, look at that display” perfect. The white one's not as bright and is a lot warmer and looks dull in comparison. They’re both fine and neither flicker or have any of the other discussed screen issues. Oh well, the gods obviously want me to have a gray phone.
It's hilarious how there is a thread like this for EVERY single new phone released.
Just enjoy the damn phone and stop worrying about if you have the "inferior" screen. It's sad really.
my wife's and mine are diff too. mine is little more yellowish but when you did not put side by side you wont notice it.
btw the minor screen flicker is kernel issue with tegrak 3...TF prime had this issue much worst off + multitask screen tearing than one x, currently itz just being solved with latest firmware's kernel.

Do you go from forum to forum creating posts like this in response? If so, it's sad really.
These aren't cheap devices and of all the parts of the phone the display is probably the most important because you'll be staring at it for a year or more. I don't blame people for wanting the best example of the display they can have or *****ing because there's such a broad disparity between them from device to device. If manufacturer's QC and tolerances were better threads like this wouldn't need to exist.
OMG my white one look yellow like that pic
singtel one
I noticed another thing with the colder one, there are some weird vertical lines in the screen. They are only visible in certain lighting conditions, like if you reflect it at your computer screen. Haven't seen that on any other phone. Haven't had the chans to check the warm one yet. I'll report back then.

LG I want my yellow back

So, I love everything about this G Pro except one thing it was bought for. The display of it is a disaster. I mean it's the worst LG smartphones' display in some years. I prefer to use indoors @ 60% brightness with autobrightness on and in this setting everything looks so dim, grey and almost unseen-able. Especially yellows, I mean there's almost no yellow colors @ all even at 100% brightness, but at 60% it's even worse. And to not be a windbag I've snapped some comparison photos of G Pro next to another LG smartphone, which has, IMO, the best screen ever. When you hold them both in hands its no question which one you'll keep to yourself being forced to choose
So if LG will continue to mistakenly set their display's color temperature to 10000K, I confess my next phone would be HTC or even Motorola. I don't want to see ppl faces of corpse skin colors, and green everywhere where yellow supposed to be

Your comparison phone is over-saturated and blown out. I am looking at the images on an very expensive and calibrated IPS at work. Neither phone has it right, but the G Pro is closer in comparison. The G Pro certainly is cooler in color causing the yellow to become green-ish. But comparing an almost green image looking for yellow is silly. It won't make people look like corpses... you can test that too, with pictures of people... odd you didn't include that in your image set.
Edit:
Wait, hold the phone, there is one person in your test, and they don't like like a corpse... imagine that.
Edit 2:
Wow, if you really can't see that the G Pro looks better, you need to have your eyes checked.
Can you really not see how **** the other devices screen looks?
What ever you used to take the pictures is very grainy too... just fyi.

You don't see my point or don't want to. Look on your expensive IPS at this image http://www.google.com/search?site=imghp&tbm=isch&q=5403393757_b5b17ea28d_o.jpg You see? There's tons of colors in it. Then transfer it to your G Pro and open, it made all color turned into shades of blue. It's intolerable. Well, Nitro also make this image bluish, sort of, but in way no as blue as G Pro
Nitro has its fallacies, of course, it can't show every possible color in the Universe, as I remember it covers 87% or 97% of sRGB when G Pro covers 99% sRGB. But Nitro has col.temp set around 6800K and all images looks true to life. I haven's seen one person who was dissatisfied with that screen, even photographers. And G Pro has around 9000K, it's way too much, the white percepted as grey, yellow almost gone and turned green, oranges turn into cherries and etc

No, even there it has slight green tint, and white below is blueish, you must have good IPS monitor or mobile display at hand to compare. When you compare the difference is stunning and eye-popping.
Also, in original post the second picture is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gombosdev.displaytester showing yellow on both devices and in archive all other main colors like white, red, blue. My concern is yellow and white because the white is what you looking at most of the time

No, I don't think so. Every other youtube review unit had the same cucumber-blueish tint on white background, EVERY. So it's LGs settings that are faulty.
Do you have any spare phone at hand? Like HTC One? It almost perfectly calibrated. Go to some place, put the same white or yellow wallpapers on both devices and compare which unit will be more eyepleasing and easier to look at. I'm sure the other phone than G Pro will be
We're waiting for anandtech review, pity that he doesn't even look at G Pro, it even prefer noname Oppo Find5, it means bad for LG, it's bad marketing that even anandtech doesn't review their phones

I have yet to find a single review that had anything negative to say about the display on the Pro. The worst comment is that it's almost as good as S4/One. I even saw the color accuracy praised in a review. I don't doubt there are likely exceptions, but not in the ~10 reviews I browsed through.
My co-worker has an HTC One and while due to size his screen looks crisper, the Pro looks damn good otherwise.

"The screen is very nice." First sentence in what you quoted. Not a single one of the reviews mentioned an issue with the color balance. I personally do not see an issue with the color balance. A number of other people in this thread don't see an issue with the color balance. I definitely saw an issue between the two in the picture, but my phone doesn't look like that and from the sounds of it.. neither do most of the other people's. So, if everyone else is telling you it's your phone...

Why are you so effing worked up over this? It's not nearly how you describe. Almost everything you have pointed out is either slanted/strategically chosen quotes from actually solid reviews or pure hyperbole.
Just sell the flippin thing and move on, your exaggerated criticisms are going to scare off developers that we desperately need.

Camera Purple tint fix?

Aside from waiting on an update, would flashing a rom or kernal help at all with the HTC one camera issues?? I really want to avoid getting my phone replaced for a warranty replacement. I am passed the 14 days, i just rooted my phone and got S-Off. Someone please help!!

It isn't a software issue.

If you are having issues with the camera then you really need to have it replaced under warranty. The issues we are having is from a bad image sensor, not software. The bad sensor will have more issues with purple tinting in the edges, generally turn out darker and more grainy even at the same exposure and ISO. I have a few sample pics on Google Plus. Also below is my HTC One with a bad image sensor issue (left) next to a CLNR from Verizon (right) that does not have this issue. They are running the same software and have the same default settings applied before I recorded this. You can see the camera software on the bad one cycling through various levels trying to optimize the image.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUrHQ92x65c
So bottom line - Don't wait on an OTA to fix this. If you have an HTC One with a bad sensor then get it back to stock and replace it under warranty.
Mine seems to be ok. Mine actually when put camera down will stay black for a bit, then the purple will creep in. But it definitely doesn't change around a lot like the video shows. Sounds like I got a good one. Mines also the blue one from best buy so, idk if that makes a difference.

If I've helped, please hit the thanks button
The good sensors still have a bit of issue with tinting in very dim photos, right at the cut off where the automatic flash would otherwise kick in. That can be fixed with software. What I had on the first one was no consistent across the entire image. For lack of a better term it just wasn't as sensitive as the replacement or my T-Mobile HTC One's sensor.

Uh, sorry to break it to you but both are equally defective. If it shows anything other than pitch black (maybe with a tiny bit of noise) when you set it down, your sensor's bad. Both of yours are going bright pink in total darkness and have severe tinting in low light shots.

If I lock the bad one to ISO 200 still pure pink. The replacement is black center with pick edges. Did you check the pics on my G+ album? There is definitely a difference. Could be this new one is bad too, I don't have my T-Mobile HTC One any longer to compare side by side. I'll mess around with them both and grab some screen shots so you can see what I am talking about with the ISO setting.

It's definitely better but it's not good. A working sensor should not be showing discolored edges on any ISO setting, especially the lower ones like 200.
You can see a pretty severe tint in these three pictures:

Agreed, better but not good. Poor choice of words on my part. In any event, there is a wide variety of image quality even with the same software which was my point to begin with.
Received replacement #2 yesterday. Still notice a maroon (this time) noise at ISO800 and can definitely see it at ISO1600. ISO 400 is dark starting out and just barely gets a tint in the corners when the camera is left sitting on. No issues at ISO 200 and lower. Left to right in the attachment is original, replacement #1 and replacement #2. Screenshots are from #2. Guessing this is as good as it's going to get.

Green tint on greys

Is this normal? Greys have a green tint which is really noticeable on low brightness. Is this a limitation of AMOLED? But I don't recall this issue on my 6P or Note 4.
Hmm. Not having this issue...
Greys are really greenish. Though it happens only at some certain brightness level (a little more than the lowest).
The panel apparently is of low quality and has issues with greys. It's detailed in the anandtech.com review
Not noticing this on mine either.

But its hard to notice. I think these displays are rather builded like this to work. Even my brother's new s7 has this thing.

On only part of the screen though? I know when tilting AMOLED displays that can happen but head on I don't know. (I've avoided AMOLED up until now because my last couple experiences with older ones was not so nice)

Guess that answers that, cheers!. (although mine might be right side of the screen, not bottom)
On my phone, the bottom part is also "greener" than the upper part. This is especially visible when brightness is set low (which I do when not outside, because it totally suffices).
Do more people have this problem?
Would returning the unit and getting a new OP3 make sense, or are these unevennesses typical??

I'm wondering if it's just an AMOLED thing... If it's really really bad then you may be better off RMA-ing it of course.

The panel apparently is of low quality and has issues with greys. It's detailed in the anandtech.com review

The findings on Anandtech have nothing to do with the quality and everything to do with the calibration, which is just software.
Hi, is it darker like the pics from my thread? I think I have the same issue on my display, just at the middle of the screen.

One thought came to me: In the upper half of the OP3 are the parts which get warm when the phone "works". Perhaps the part of the screen which is warmed up regularly loses a bit of green tint, while the lower, colder part remains as it is??? Just a thought...
I get a weird purpley/dark colour on greys and when scrolling white font on black background, but only on minimum brightness.
After reducing brightness below a threshold (just above the minimum) the colours across the display seem to shift

I got my replacement phone today. And. The display is even more worse. The colors are uneven, like some of them have here. The bottom is greener and the top slighlty pinkier/the correct color.
Argh. That's what I'm afraid of (sent my device in for replacement on Saturday):
That, as a replacement, simply someone grabs a box with a new device and sends it to me, without testing.
Edios, what did you write in the service request as your reason why you want a replacement? Did you write about the display problems?
Welcome to the lottery...
Does anyone know: If the 2nd device also has a defect, and the 14 day return time since I got the 1st device is already over, can I demand from Oneplus that they take back the 2nd device and that I get my money back??

I didn't even mention the issues, Amazon immediately gave me a replacement.
The problem is, they provide only a single replacement and now insisting to give a refund. But I want this device cos there's no other device that I'm interested in. And it's out of stock also.
For what it's worth, these sound like typical AMOLED issues. There are long threads in the Galaxy S6, S7, etc. forums with people experiencing the exact same thing. AMOLEDs just seem to not be as consistent as LCDs in the quality control department and it's always just the luck of the draw whether you get one with green or pink tints or not.

Screen issues

I've had 2 Oneplus 3's now, and am now in the process of sending the second unit back for a replacement.
This because the screen wasn't functioning properly, there was lightbleed on both and the screen had a green tint on one side and a red tint on the other side.
Has anyone else experienced issues like this? Is it a known problem, big or small? Or am I just in really bad luck by recieving a bad screen 2 times in a row.
No issue here. Wish the screen was brighter but at least its the same as my g4

The problems you're describing are physically impossible on a Super AMOLED display... and to say that it has happened to both OP3s you received is just as absurd. The pre-applied screen protector is pretty crappy, but I mean c'mon... Are you one of those guys who returns things with the smallest imperfections, or perceived imperfections in this case?

Do you have any picture of the defect. So far, your issue is uncommon one for OnePlus 3.

Woah there, I have no idea how it is possible to have the problems I have, I know that with lcd sometimes the glue causes the device to be lit unevenly, don't know if that could be the case, but it seemed a little off. I tested this using this video on full brightness: https://youtu.be/vu0mQa2EpS4
While going from. Grey to black, the pixels should all turn of at the same time, or at least, that's how I think it should be on amoled. But this wasn't the case on both devices.
As for the different tint problem, that does bother me a lot more, reading Web with a changing color if you read from left to right isn't that good for the eyes or at least It bothered me.

Here are some pictures, it's quite difficult to recreate on camera like I see them but this gives a general idea of what my issues were with the first device. The first being the screen tint, on the left of the screen it seems to be more red and on the right more green, while this is a Grey background at about 50% brightness. The second is how the screen is unevenly lit while on a solid Grey low brightness background.

I just watched that LCD test video and firstly my eyes hurt from the bright white light secondly I am quite picky and having come from the g4 which I thought had a great screen (few bleed issues though) I am quite happy. I couldn't see anything at all on my unit like you have so maybe it's device specific?
I have noticed this weird thing though and it's when I use MX player pro to watch films. I have been watching the dark night for like the 20th time on th op3 but do notice the skin tones look a little warm and when i increase brightness it gets worst. I think this is a combination of the pentile display and the AMOLED screen with a lower resolution than we would like. I am sure I remember my galaxy note 3 and wife's s5 looking like this also but could be wrong.
Overall it is strange using g4 then using op3 it's hard to explain but they are just different not just LCD / AMOLED but the calibration also. Love the blacks though it's like the phone is off when the screen goes dark. Nice.

So the screen turned black fully at the same time, well there's a logo on screen, but apart from that all black?
I know what you mean by that, I think thats in all screens, not sure, but I had it in both screens but also the problems occurred on them too, maybe that's a feature, I at least won't mind at night when the screen is that low and a bit more warm toned. I saw it on a selfie I got on whatsapp, at night when I got it, I saw her face normal, but when I set the screen brighter, I also saw that the photo also had a background! which was invisible and dark on the lowest brightness.
no issues
Didn't see a logo. Must be blind

Smallest imperfection? He uses the screen all the time and notices that all the time, how is that small imperfection? Also amoled screens are known for the issues he described. All screens have that issue. Just people like you are not good enough to notice it while others notice it easily.
