[Q] Rooted tether - AT&T - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, guys. I just received my M8 today. Love it. I unlocked the bootloader (AT&T) and rooted it. The only thing I'm missing is tether. I don't have a tether plan. After freezing the tether check process with Titanium Backup, I have tried Estrong and a wifi tether widget. Nothing seems to make it work. Toggling it on in the settings just causes nothing to happen (it never even switches to on).
As it stands, I can't get it to work. Anyone know of a fix? Seems like last year we had to flash a modified apk on the M7.
Thanks!

I had tethering on my plan and paid the extra $$ per month. Recently, I changed my plan to the new family share 10gb. Saved me about $40/mo and tethering is included, along with unlimited talk and text. Maybe that might be another option...

Ahhhhh.....sorry. Wish I had some more ideas to help.

Yah, it seems like modified apk is the way to go. I was looking into this last week, but it turns out that the system partition is still locked on Verizon even though we have root. Are you able to modify system files on other variants of the m8?

You can through recovery - you can copy the file over or make a symbolic link into a modifiable partition
I can test it, what should be modified to enable tethering?

Hmm... Good to know. I don't have anything yet, but maybe Thursday or this weekend. I've got a ton of schoolwork due on Wednesday.
Btw, can you run the tethering app and get a logcat from it? Thx

This actually seems to work, though I can't get my iPad to see the network and connect.

Have you tried installing, WiFi Tether Router from the play store? Works really well on the M8. So far I've done 5GB on my 2GB tethering plan using it.

Could you please post the proper file name and vendor name. I tried several that have parts of the name you posted BUT they did not work on the T-Mobile HTC ONE M8.
Thanks in advance.

Mine worked by just using the hotspot app im on the £12.90 sim only deal.
Works fine with nothing added for me. I thought three decided that all plans with all you can eat data could do tethering?
13 pounds a month.
3000 texts
300 minutes
All you can eat data
when I got the one X the sales guy said I cant tether with the plan I have and it only comes on the one plan! I'm one down from the one plan and I would have to add the tethering add on at £5 a month!
He did say you can get away with so much then they will send you a message how true all this is I don't know I don't really use tethering so I'm not bothered!
I haven't even tried it either might give it a go and see if they bollock me lol
I have done it a lot and never got penalised.
Tether using wifi hotspot or usb , they dont know that your doing it !
i downloaded 20Gb with no hassle
I am on the one plan but you can use whats built into Android 4....
Otherwise I like to use an app called Open Garden, has never let me down so far and a lot more easier to setup.
I have all you can eat, but not the one plan (ultimate internet 1000). I can tether (warily lol) by just using the built in WiFi hotspot software, works just fine, not had any warnings as yet

Ive tethered to other phones and my Nexus 7, and nothing bad has happened. I read if you mobile tether they couldnt know, but if you use a PC theres a chance they will, because of the websites and ips it accesses.... £5 a month adds a gig of tethering, which is bloody insulting.....
When I tried it on an all you can eat plan I was redirected to a web page saying tethering wasn't supported. It was a new plan but maybe the older ones work.

I have tried this and it does not work
The inbuilt apps via hotspot and usb get me redirected to a three page which says tethering is not available on my plan. Im going to try cwm and open garden to see if they work.

Just use the built-in USB or wifi tethering, it should just work fine. I've been tethering on Three for years now, the built-in tethering in android always works fine for me.
Edit: I should just note, I'm on Unlimited Internet 500
I have tried the apps and the standard android tethering app it still does not work. I get the same three message.

[Q] new unlimited. Still tether?

I've seen a couple threads and I'm a bit confused.
I know the new plan doesn't have wifi hotspot... Not like that service really mattered.
Was wondering for those who are on the new plan. Can you still tether?

I'm just gonna put my two cents in, I'm not on the plan, might get the s3 with this plan. But, from my knowledge, there is no way for them to know what's using your data unless you're on a stock ROM.

I was wondering this very question myself.
Tethering is still working for me after I made the switch yesterday. Hopefully I don't get charged though.. even though I don't use tether, it's good to know that everything works on my phone. How would i know I'm being charged for it? I didn't receive any "warning" popups or anything like that before continuing.. do I just have to wait for my next bill??
I wonder if they can develop some methods that could detect your tethering and block it?

I had the tether feature free when i upgrade to 5G and now I'm on this new plan and the rep told me that i still keept my free tether and my other line will have it free as well...
but gosh Tmobile just got bad after they close the calls center with reps I had to talk to 4 people for one simple reason cause none of these new foreign knows what their talking about. so im not sure if i still have the tether will see.

Only by puting an APP on your device. I know a little bit about networking, and thats the only way. packets are packets. the user-agent is the only way to see what type of browser it is. but like i said before, a lot of android browsers use the desktop user agent.
But why would/should any carrier stop it? Especially if you are on a tiered plan. Its YOUR data, use it how YOU want. PERIOD. wethere you are streaming on your laptop, or streaming on your phone and using an MHL conector to your TV, its STILL streaming. Period.

For those unable to tether and being sent to that page, You could try using a different tethering app. Try foxfi, my dad is a tmo employee and doesnt have tethering on his plan, but says tethering works perfectly fine on his stock unrooted t989 with foxfi. I might also recommend cwm tethering.

They need to show that because they need a
fixed number. It's the same with minutes, i remember a while ago they had something like 999999 minutes. That's a long time ago though lol. But do you honestly think you'll use 10000GB lol

Yeah thats from the mobile site? They're probably slowly updating yo hide the number and showing unlimited instead... TMobile aren't exactly the best at web developing... Remember their slow and crappy websites when trying to check your usage. It's a tad better now lol.
Anyways, it looks like there are mixed reviews, but i assume native tethering is no good but some 3rd parties are still good? Keep the feedback coming fellas

Extreme data usage

Hello, so I've been I've been searching around and haven't come up with a definitive answer. I've had the s4 for a couple months now and have been using an excessive amount of data, when I haven't been doing anything out of the norm. With my s2 I had a5 gb plan and only got throttled once in awhile, but with the s4 my data has jumped tremendously. I've used almost 16 gb this month and 21 gb last month.
Android os is to blame for 6gb this month and 12 gb last month, all clocked in as back ground usage. Why? Wth is this phone doing to use so much data. . I have unlimited no throttling plan, but if I was still on 5 gb I'd be screwed. I just would like to know how I can stop this.
Thanks

Dude, nothing on your phone, other than maybe a torrent client, can use 21 gigs of data without your consent. And since its saying "Android system" is responsible for the data usage, its you tethering. Period. You asked, so i answered.
What part of saying I don't tether other than hotspot which I'm limited to 500mb from Tmobile do you not understand? Also said I haven't increased use from my what ive done on the gs2 and actually there are several posts online of others experiencing this as well but no solution. I did ask but you surely haven't answered.

LTE could be the answer it uses much more data to get data back to you faster.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Your attitude isn't going to get anybody to help you. People are offering you advice, no need to be rude.
As far as your data, it can be many things. I would start by keeping track of each app's data usage over a few day span.
What towle is saying is right. We do this to try to help people. We don't get paid for this. We do this voluntarily, and if you have a bad attitude nobody will want to help you.

yes, this is Def a real issue, tethering is Def not the cause for one thing it shows as it's own data consumption for hot spot Tmobile Gave me the same and kept telling me you must be doing this and that. Just torrent the FoxFi app full version. You need to install a certificate which means you have to enable the lockscreen on your phone...but whatevs. Works for me.

If you can live without your phone for a few days, send it to Sonic and he'll give you s-off... costs about $30. I did it, worth the money.

Once you have s-off, you can unlock your bootloader and also get root.
Check out the thread, it's well worth the time.

dont buy a phone you wouldnt want to run stock. Most people see that as a difficult idea to grasp, but whatever. if you ABSOLUTELY NEED ROOT TO FUNCTION, this is not the phone for you right now

no, with a view like this, I'm happy using a phone that doesnt have root yet, instead of mindlessly saying 'durrrr I hate sense, but I bought this phone anyway'

I think it's been mentioned our phone doesn't have a secure element. Wed have to go with a secure Sim card and who knows if that'll work other than with isis payment systems.

This new wallet is not the NFC payment version. It is basically to get access to send/receive money via Google Wallet

Not entirely true. It includes the NFC payment part, it's just not available for our phones.

Yes but I have a secure sim card so I'm gonna give it ago. Haven't had a chance to play with it. Between working o.t and trying to get my 5 year old ready for school in the morning has had me beat. I will let you guys know if I make progress this weekend.
And any ideas welcome the more brainstorming the better
