MicroUSB to MicroUSB+MicroSD ribbon cable? - Moto G Accessories

Hi there,
I was reading that thread about meenova, and though something even better could be done: a ribbon cable, male connects to the MicroUSB exit in one end, and has MicroUSB female + MicroSD in the other. It kinda can be done, but nobody tried yet, AFAIK. Meenova is great, but it still creates a bulk in the phone's lower part that prevents it from being safely thrown on a bag or pocket, i.e.
As an example, it would be like this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Micro-USB...ories_MobilePhoneChargers&hash=item3f295819ea
But with a male connector. The other end would feature a MicroUSB (so one can plug a cable or charger) and a MicroSD slot for expansion.
Is there any initiatives in this way? If someone knows, drop me a line below. I'm very interested.

is this what you mean?

Not exactly. I saw a few MicroSD extension cables that worked similarly to the one you described (except, obviously, there's a MicroSD slot on the female end, not a regular SD one), but my idea is different from both of these. The male end would be a MicroUSB one, to fit in the G's charging/cable port, and the female end would be split into a MicroUSB one (to charge and connect to the computer, just like the port on the phone itself), and a MicroSD card reader. Something meenova-like, but its form-factor would be a ribbon cable, so it wouldn't interfere (mostly) with cases and etc.

I see what you mean now, I don't know if it exist.
it would be nice to have cause a dual usb to micro usb cable exists so if they can cut off on of the usb ports and change it with a micro sd piece it would be the cable you need.i hope you find it.

Yeah. The splitter exists (http://store.everythingtreo.com/store_images/product_images/accessories/large/3923.jpg - though I'm not sure if both female ends would work with data, here - and http://www.baraka.cn/en/uploadfiles/product/20121169912.jpg ), and there is a very early sketch design I found on Reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus7/comments/11oiy7/idea_for_otg_usbmicrosdmicro_usb_dongle_for_nexus/ ) which, except for the OTG, fits exactly my needs, but it doesn't seem to have actually made it to the real world :/

something like KINGMAX KOTGR-01 OTG TF Card Reader w/ USB Adapter for Cellphones / Tablets - Light Blue + Black on dx.com ??

WIFI is another option. I use the RavPower WD01 battery-powered wireless hub with wireless bridge mode*that I bought for my tablet with my Moto G as well. It's battery powered (and can serve as a back up battery for the G). It has an SD card slot and a full-sized USB port that can accomdate upto a 1 Terabyte drive. Best of all, it's very reasonably priced. I did a fairly long review with photos if you're interested. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38680746 I love this device.

The best option is a case with sd card reader, battery and extra micros usb port...

I am thininking about microusb hub in shape of T letter. You can put card reader + charging at the same time. Maybe with ribbon microusb cable it would be possible to hide cardreader/pendrive in the case... But so far I have not found it :-/

Not exactly. Meenova is more like that one you posted, but I'd like something with a flat ribbon cable, so it can be folded to the back of the phone, and with a microUSB port to charge and transfer data.

This could be acomplished with the kind of cable I'm looking for. Just do something similar to what Sony does in their docks: is just a normal cable cased within the dock.

Those make the device too bulky, the idea was something that adds very little to the overall size and shape of the phone, so it could be used with a case (or even, as stated above, build this setup in a case, similar to mophie's space pack).

Any luck finding something like this? It would be great if there were a flat microusb cable/extender that could go around to the back and then hook up something like a meenova that would be affixed to the back or better yet embedded on the inside of a case.
I did find something along these lines at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ugodevices/expandable-sd-and-micro-sd-storage-for-android-use. The cable looks like what is wanted, but then they added bulk by including a SD reader as well as a microSD. Also, it won't be available for a few more months.

You may encounter trouble because of the One's all-metal body. Your case will need to completely isolate the coil from the body for this to work, if memory serves me right. Admittedly, it is aluminum, so I'm not altogether certain it will be an issue.

I would really like to see something like this. A couple of challenges I think would be keeping the plug area on the bottom to as thin as possible and second would be to keep the case as thin and small as possible.

Post pics of it on the phone and let us know what kind of charger your using. It looks like you could rip off that coil and place it in any case if it's thin .
Definitely report on results. I tried to make something like this for my One XL, and while it worked as far as charging went, it was unpredictable and seemed to make the phone unstable, though I could never figure out why. I suspect it's not just the charging current but that the phone's charging circuits and drivers need to be tuned for wireless.

Thanks for letting us know about this. I'd not seen that, but it looks like just what I'd like to try and fit between my phone and case. The lack of wireless charging was the biggest reason I held off switching from my DNA to the One. I love the convenience of just plopping my phone on the orb charger during the day. Review of Smiley and Mini-strap usb cables w/lots of pics!

This is a review of Smiley Luminescence usb cable: http://www.tvc-mall.com/details/Smi...I9300-S4-I9500-N7100-HTC-Sony-White-MCH-636B/ and Mini-digital Strap usb cable: http://www.tvc-mall.com/details/3-i...r-Samsung-Sony-HTC-Etc.-Orange-Strap-CR-267A/
Since I'm on a roll with reviews from my recent tvc-mall order, here is another unique one you all might appreciate and enjoy! A typical usb to micro-usb cable is a boring piece of wire, nothing to get excited about. It took me awhile to search and to find something unique and fun to share with everybody. And for about $1 plus change - it's also a great value from tvc-mall.
First one is a Smiley cable. Just one look at it and you realize where the name came from. Both usb and micro-usb connectors have a light-up embedded smiley faces on one side and a round dot on another side. It looks super cool and highly visible in the dark. So once you have usb side connected to wall or car charger, both ends light-up and you will not have any problem finding your phone's micro-usb port to connect the other side of the cable in the dark. Cable itself is a flat noodle design. Feels and looks very durable, and comes in a variety of close to a dozen of different colors. One thing I do have to mention, I checked it with Galaxy Charging current app, and found that you will not be able to get full 2A charging speed. Perhaps there is some loss with current being used to light up smiley faces or wires being thinner, but honestly for $1.19 this is going to be the coolest charging/data cable in your collection.
Here is how it looks.

The other cable is a very short (a total of 4" end-to-end) multi-functional charging/data transfer cable which is equally unique. When you are traveling or on the go, dragging a spool of long cable often is not preferable. Finding the shortest cable is also a challenge because short cables are not as durable and often will not allow full speed charging. This one hits a mark in every aspect. It has a flat noodle design, dust caps on both of the usb and micro-usb connectors, and I confirmed it can charge your Note 2 at full 2A current!!! As a bonus, it has a unique built-in micro-sd card reader. The full usb connector has pins on both sides with one side supposedly being able to read data from micro-sd. OK, I tried it and even demonstrated in my pictures. I was NOT able to read micro-sd card, that didn't work for me. But who cares! For $1.32 you are getting one of the shortest and coolest looking charging and data cables which can take a full advantage of 2A charging. It even comes in 3 different color combinations. Definitely happy with this one as well, been using it with my extended battery for a few days now - very convenient to eliminate mess of long usb cables.
The pictures are below.

Guess what? I ordered and just received 2 more of these mini-strap cables and actually one reads micro-sd without a problem! So let's see, 1 out of 3 works Listen, for $1.32 it works just as a cable and considering you can put it on your keychain (that lanyard cap part latches on with two little hooks securely). So, I would recommend for anybody if you want to try your luck with it's built-in micro-sd card reader to order 3 of those lol!!!! At least that was my luck...

I have ordered from them in the past both using standard cheapest method and once with DHL upgrade. DHL upgrade is a bit pricey but will take you 3 days to get from China to US (I'm not kidding). Regular cheapest shipping is the usual 2 weeks you get with any ebay purchase. Because of my order history and my online write ups about their products - I get complimentary DHL upgrades One thing for sure, any time I get something which doesn't work they always credit back the price to my account.
Btw, I got a few tiny speakers from them, one bt and another one just with external aux connection, both have micro-sd card slot to turn it into little mp3 player - just mind blowing sound. Expect reviews soon!

Is it possible to make a moto g case with MicroSD and Charging capability?

Is it possible to make a Moto G case that connects to the MicroUSB port, which in turn gives it MicroSDHC/XC card support (cards would be plugged into the case itself) and Charging capability? I'd imagine that the case would be a tad on the thick side, which could be beneficial for the sake of protecting the case.
Nice idea!
I would've bought it if it actually existed.
-sent from my little moto beast
I know. I am actually surprised that one hasn't been made yet. I am no engineer of any sort, but I am hoping someone sees this and actually gets inspired to make one. I am sure that they would make a killing, because I would buy one for my Moto G in a heartbeat.
Borrowing the idea of the battery charging cases that I've seen made for iPhone devices, why can't there something like this be made with a similar design for the Moto G? Just replace the lighting connector with a MicroUSB one, and then add on a MicroSDHC/SDXC card reader slot to the pack somewhere? So now you have a case that is also an extra battery AND has the ability to mount and use MicroSDHC cards.

The tricky part is doing both at the same time. OTOH the USB-OTG standard is meant for the host device to power the guest and not receive power while doing it. Just tried my OTG adapter with a powered USB hub on my Note 2 to be sure and it's not charging.

My previous cell phone, a Palm Pixi Plus, had an officially supported Touchstone wireless charging option, which simply replaced the standard back cover with a magnetic charging back cover. And worked very well. To me, something like that would be the ideal solution for the Moto G. Motorola currently offers no officially supported wireless charging solution for the Moto G. The only 3rd party (QI Wireless) charger requires using the miniUSB port for connecting the charging adapter.

There's a web site and youtube video of someone re-wiring a QI Wireless Charging Receiver, so as to not occupy the miniUSB port:

But: the Touchstone type replacement back cover would be ideal.

I suppose this is more complicated than what you are willing to do? But on the topic of a case with a microsdcard reader built in, has anyone found anything like this?
I was thinking about the theoretical possibility of doing this and I found an image of how to make an OTG Y-Cable. You need a resistor (100k) to the Sync pin, and that's it.
Therefore, what the cover circuit would need is: a small Wireless Charger receiver wired to the Y-Cable's +5v and Ground and a MicroSD reader without the USB plug, connected directly to the wires. Additionally, I would recommend to add a small hub to support, together with the MicroSD reader, two other MicroUSB ports on the cover: one for charger-only, and another to have an useable MicroUSB port, as the one on the phone would be occupied. It would have to be at least 1.5mm thick to fit the microUSB female ports, which would be the biggest parts.
Well, in theory, it is possible. But I don't know if the Moto G has a big enough market share that would make any company produce something like that... Maybe I'll try to do one myself someday, just for the fun factor. ^^

[DIY] High Current Micro USB Charging Cable From Cheap China Cable

WHY
I use Waze on my N5 every day during my commute to and from work. I find that the only micro USB cable I have that can still charge my N5 while running Waze is the OEM LG cable that came with it. I don't like the current state of affairs - where I'm reliant on just one cable with no backups.

I've tried the regular 'Genuine' micro USB cables from China via Ebay that purport to handle Galaxy Note level charging, as well as 24/28 AWG cables that are supposed to handle increased currents. No joy.
NEED
- Pocket Knife
- Soldering iron + associated materials
- Electrical tape
HOW
I used a cheap, China, Ebay, micro USB cable that has a hard plastic casing around the connectors on either end of the cable; this makes it easier to pop the casing off, fiddle with the wires, and close everything up again.

(1) You begin by using a pocket knife to pop open the casings around both the USB A male and micro USB male connectors. Do this by firmly putting pressure via the blade edge on the seam between the casing halves. Once the blade has sunk about .5mm into the seam you then wiggle it to widen the gap. It may help to increase pressure on the seam by hinging the metal connector against the plastic (as if it was plugged in and someone decided to sit on the plastic). You'll see this when successful.
(2) Next, you take your soldering iron and move the green wire over to join the black wire, and the white wire over to join the red wire; on both connectors.
(3) Add a bit of a jumper between the D+ and D- connections on the micro USB connector (where the White and Green wires used to be) You'll see this when done.
(4) Finally, put the plastic connector covers back on and cleanly wrap them with some electrical tape.
Seems easier to just buy a reputable cable at a modest price. Amazon basics has fine offerings. I'm able to run waze and Pandora while driving and still get a charge. Its mostly going to be contingent on the car charger, not the cable.
I tried just getting a proper cable - ended up with a bunch of cables that couldn't cut the mustard. Thus, I took the lemons I had and made lemonade. The cable I made is also independent of whether the charger shorts the D+ & D- pins together; which lets your phone know if it can pull full amps or not.
You can also make your cable with 25AWG
You can try to buy a pisen cable, you can read my review here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...ro-usb-cable-improving-charging-time-t3068562
It s cheap and made of good materials... I sold 20 of them to my customers and everyone confirmed a great improvement over the original cables ( I m a computer technician) and the difference with the original one from nexus 5 is great
I made a similar cable once, out of 2 thick wires ( can´t remember the AWG size though but this wire was used for 230V connection so it had at least a diameter of 1+ mm ) and had similar results.
The lower resistance on this cable can actually help a lot but you need a power supply which can deliver a higher current too in order to benefit from it.
I see one benefit though, in comparison to a really cheap cable with thin wires and crimped contacts, the DIY one is more reliable ( though it looks horrible )
Just got my Charger Doctor USB volt/current meter today. Attached are pictures of the current going into my N5 via the OEM cable (1.16A), unmodified China cable (0.36A), and modified China cable (0.68A).
The mod is a definite improvement - but still not even close to what the stock cable can do. Looks like the wires in the China cable are seriously undersized.
My next step will have to be using two proper gauge wires as mentioned above by Gorgtech to finally achieve OEM cable throughput.
Here are some pictures of my DIY cable
Not very pretty but functional
Looks good to me! I think I'm going to source some speaker wire for my next one.

I'm happy that I found this thread and the other ideas in the replies though in just wondering, where you have the jumper how would this apply to the micro USB pinout with 1+2 on the top and 3+4+5 on the bottom, rather than all on the same plane.
As it turns out when I'd completed the USB A end and started on the other this was the case. Typical.
Thanks if any insight.
I'm currently using my power bank cable in the car which allows charging at a faster rate than discharge.
Thanks.

Excellent and very valid question! Reference the attached picture.
1 - connect to red & white wires
2 - jumper to 3
4 - not connected
5 - connect to black & green wires

Use 12 gauge...
Just for the fun of it, I measured the spare cable I have
The diameter is about 1.3 mm which corresponds AWG 16 if I´m right
Ofc you can use a even stronger cable if you want but keep in mind that the limiting factor will be the pins of the USB connectors itself, also from a physical side of view ( you cannot fit the strongest cable inside the case of the connectors, not even if you modify them. )
I used hot glue to keep the pins in place after I soldered my cable and used shrinking hose after :good:
Basically every strong wire should work ( eg. speaker cable ), just use whatever piece of junk you have laying around

Thanks very much for that, I shall give that a go over the weekend and report my findings.
Cheers.
I did it but my Nexus 5 is still not getting above 500 ma from a 1 amp charger.
I have another cable from old Nokia phone that gives me solid 1000ma.
That cable is hardly 8 inches. And is a usb cable not charging only cable.
I have notes that the wire strands in my usb cable are of aluminum.
What were yours?

I built mine using 20 gauge power supply cables
Will it cost damage to the battery?
I recovered one soldering microusb connector pins 1 and 5 to 220V cables, and shorting 2 and 3 on the opposite side, with great effort considering the small tabs.
Well, I still couldn't get higher than 650mA, to my surprised disappointment.
would 12 gauge be to big to work with ?

usb type C cables

so i picked up a V20 and had Speck Presidio Clear case installed on it right away at ATT store ...
when i came home and decided to charge the phone i realized that the cutout for USB cable in the Presidio case fits the original LG cable EXACTLY. there isn't even a fraction of a millimeter of space between the cable and the case on ANY side of the cable - it is a perfect fit. and that's a problem.
it's a problem because rather than designing the case for a variety of cables it was designed specifically for one - the original cable. i want to pick up some extra Type C cables but if they're even slightly bigger than the original LG cable plug in ANY direction ( height or width ) they won't fit ...
so what are some decent Type C cables that have plugs smaller than ( or identical to ) the one on the cable V20 comes from ?
You could always mod your case. I'll be modding my cases because the headphone jack opening isn't big enough for either of my CIEM cables.

These are pretty slim USB-C Cables. The Zinc housing is almost the exact size of the port opening.

i recommend you just get a short Bose extension cable from Amazon - it has a super thin plug and a really nice quality. i have been using mine for about 2 years but i'm very careful with my gear - it probably won't last this long with normal use - it is quite delicate.

great pics. i assume the white cable you held them next to is the one that comes with V20. in that case definitely they would fit the opening in any case that fits the original cable.
the reviews on Amazon are not the best though, and the 5 star reviewers admit to being paid to write them.
once again, appreciate the pics. full disclosure though - i am a perfectionist - that means i can't simply accept something that works, i must keep searching until i find the best.
this is an option.
I also purchased this brand of cable. They received high marks and can confirm they are slightly smaller than original cable jacket.
This is the cable.
However, I purchased a three pack that is, curiously, not available any longer.

i used a different app but the bottom line is current with screen off is much higher than with screen on. unless your measurements were with screen off they are ultimately meaningless.
i ordered from amazon, received and tried out :
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WJSPFOW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
this cable is a bit pricey at $10 for a single 6 foot cable but so far it's perfect - the plug is more or less identical in size to the original plug, just with rounded corners and shorter. and it clicks into the port on the V20 with about the same feel as the original cable.
to me it's a keeper, i plan to buy a second one in a few days time after i had some more experience with this cable, since it's no rush.
only downside to this cable that i can think of is that it's not a USB 3.0 or 3.1 cable - only 2.0 ...
belkin also makes 3.1 cable that my guess is would plug in the same, but it's a thicker cable, more expensive, but most importantly only 3 feet long and i wanted a 6 foot long cable.
well, another downside is that for how thin the cable is - it isn't particularly flexible and has a lot of memory to the shape ... but overall, as i said, i still plan to buy a 2nd one ...
it feels stupid to make a YouTube video about a USB cable, but i also had some other accessories picked up for the V20 - namely Case, Screen Protector, Memory Card and Portable 10,000 mah charger so i think i will have to do some sort of a combined video to cover all this stuff then it won't feel as stupid to me.
EDIT: looks like i can finally post links and probably attachments too ...
Definitely should get a good flexible cable. That should be the portable one. The other for home. I'm sticking with Anker adapters for now. I did buy one USB c cable for data transfer to take advantage of the internal UFS storage. You'll be fine with 2.0 for micro SD.
