Droid Life review says M8 battery life not good ? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Battery life sucks on the M8 ?
HTC claims that the new One (M8) could see upwards of 40% better battery life over last year’s M7, but I’m not I’m buying it. I saw average battery life in my testing on the 2,600mAh battery that wasn’t necessarily greatly improved over last year’s One. My testing typically includes multiple days in a row of nothing but 4G LTE, followed by a few with WiFi mixed in. On 4G LTE-only days, my phone was almost always begging for a charger after 10-12 hours of use and around 3 hours of screen-on time.
Per this review they say battery life is average at best, and not that good, only getting 3h On Screen time, and overall just like 10h - 12h of total battery life on the phone, and with WiFi on they get 14 hours total battery life.
I thought all the real world reviews of people, and other sites were raving about the battery life on this new One M8 ? getting like 5h to 6h On Screen time ?

That review was either based on bad 4g reception, or the reviewer was flat out lying. Also , what is "multiple days in a row"? That's not very scientific. Very bad reviewer in my book
I get very good o2 4g reception, but mostly use WiFi or no data. I have 30 percentage charge left when I go to bed and I get about 4.5 hours screen on.
Can't imagine why anyone would want 4g on all day long but to each their own. Personally I only use 3g on the go unless I really need super speed.

AnandTech's device reviews are the only ones that matter and they saw upwards of 70% improvement in battery life.

For me, the M8 battery is lasting at least twice as long as the M7. First phone I've had in a long time that can last in excess of 48 hours with my normal usage
Right now my battery stats say 1 day, 17hrs: 4h 28m screen on. The battery is currently at 48%

After reading more about that DroidLife, they seem very pro Samsung #1, and then Nexus devices #2, and anything else just sucks. Also one of the reviewers is known to be an HTC hater, per the comment section of regulars on that site.

Clearly they haven't used the M8 everyone I know is getting 4-5+ hours screen time.

The reviewer is flat out lying and a tool. Every other review says it's good and we all know it's good from owning and using one.

This was after my 3rd full charge/discharge cycle. 6 days on just reg power saver and light use.

It's all subjective... I get some 3 to 3.5 hours screen on time with auto brightness. I also have lots of apps background syncing and waking up the phone constantly. So it all depends on how you set up your phone, number of apps, usage criteria. So good battery life for one person may not be the same to other.
So no point to argue on battery life good or bad.

Good point, but for me 3h to 3.5h On Screen time would be extremely disappointing. I use my phone a ton during the workday, and realize I need at least 5h On screen time minimum, perfect for me is more like 6h On Screen time. I need a phone to last a full solid day, from like 6:00am to 10:00pm.

Coming from the Nexus 5 my battery life has been stellar in comparison to what it was. I'm very happy so far.

Lol, whoever wrote that review is taking out their ringpiece. I've had my m7 for 8 months and now my m8 for 2 weeks and the battery life is tons better.I don't have to carry a battery bank in my pocket anymore. When I take my phone of charge and stick it in my pocket it will stay on 100% for least 2 hours if I don't use it.my m7 would drop down to 94% in that time. Don't listen to stupid reviews like that. He is probably an Apple lover who is gutted that his once awesome device is now being overshadowed by an android phone AGAIN.

Depends on how you use the device. Anandtech and other sites show heavy use in weak signal areas can drain any device.

how much more battery are you getting? I'm not the N5 right now and debating on getting the M8.

I'm rocking both the n5 and m8 right now, and this is totally a subjective statement without any real numbers, but I find myself plugging in the n5 a lot more than the m8. I am using the m8 more now because I like it more and the n5 still drains away just sitting there. The m8 is on verizon and the n5 is on tmobile, both have good reception in the area. I feel like I could comfortably use the m8 for 2 days and 1 night until I would want to put it on the charger. I'd estimate that I use about 2-3 hours screen time, 1-2 hours talk time and <1 hour navigation per day. Just my opinion based on real world observations, I'm not really interested in detailed usage tracking or anything like that. It works great and I'm going to keep the m8 and ditch the n5 when the month is up.

I dont know about this reviewer... The battery life to me is incredibly good. I can stream 4g/3g music through spotify while working a full day(around 8-9h playtime), while snapchatting, while texting(regular texts) and while texting in Kik and also using the internet for other things.

Without power saver, and using Greenify to prevent most wakelocks, I'm avergaing 7-9 hours screen on time with 10-15% charge remaining when I go to bed the second night.

You can lower your brightness if it is not already at the lowest setting.
Unfortunately, the galaxy nexus has poor battery life. You could also try turning off data when you don't need it.

the screen is at lowest and it doesnt make sense turning of data if the problem is from screen right?
I'm having the exact same issue. Screen is totally eating up my battery life. It took 30 minutes for the battery to go down by like 10%. And the screen is 40% of the battery life issue.

Maybe I just don't use the screen as much as you, but I don't find this to be true for me. I find it has great battery life. I don't sit for hours with the screen on, but I do regularly text and check emails throughout the day, do a bit of web browsing, take some calls, and play some Angry Birds or other games in the evening. The screen is always at the top of the list for battery usage, but even on an extreme day I still have more than 30% battery left by the time I go to bed. I throw it on the charger and I'm ready to go again in the morning.
I disagree that the Galaxy Nexus has poor battery life, in general. I would argue that: all high-end phones have "poor" battery life because of all the things they do (especially 720p screens), your personal use of it consumes a lot of power and you could benefit from an extended battery, or you have a faulty device.
hi there, i do that exact same things with no games, so less usage but i get less than a day... i love the phone but the batery is just no working...
I don't understand why people don't get that when you have a screen that is 4.65'' it will destroy the battery life. My screen use is always at 60% or more but yet I still get good battery life. The screen is going to use the majority of your battery when compared to other things, that's just how it is.
sorry but thats not the point, when you pay 700 for a top phone, that is suposed to be the google experience to carry arround wiith you and you can only get 10 hours of battery time something went wrong in the process...
Most phones are $600 to $700, and name one 4g phone that will last more than 10 hours with moderate use and no extended battery, just not going to happen. You need to reset your expectations.
GN battery is giving lots of trouble, too. I picked up the phone from charge and it was 100% charged. ! hour of usage with 3g on. Usage includes 1 hours or music and reading of pdf books simultaniously and battery is dropped to 61%.

I think you should take a look at every other android phone that has come out with the same specs in the last year. Everything from the EVO 3d to the thunderbolt have their default battery's not last more than around 6-8 hours with constant use because of the screen & processors.
THis is why Verizon offered the extended batteries at a discounted rate right off the bat, because default batteries have never ever lasted that long in topof the line smartphones. FFS the new iphone 4s I've heard from a friend that their phones don't even last 24 hours.
I have a galaxy nexus, and mine has lasted... let me see.. one sec...1 day 3 hours and 25sec's with 35% left. (of course I have the extended battery) but here's the kicker: the extended battery has basically the same back as the regular phone does. so if they so desired, verizon could technically put out another extended battery just like all the rest of the phones, but they might not do that. I'm content with the battery life as it is almost identical as the droid X from which I came. The only difference is since I have a lot of un-updated apps for ice cream sandwich one of them is using "mediaserver" A LOT. I'm talking about that being the top of my battery draining with the screen being second. They both have taken ~20% with android OS itself taking 13, PlayerPro taking 13, and other random things like calls and txt msging taking ~10% each.
So I would suggest not trying to watch a lot of stuff on your phone while on battery, or don't expect your battery to survive long while watching stuff on that great screen
hymn thanks for the feedback so the only solution I see would be to go for a bigger battery. I'm from Portugal were could I buy one and whays the power?

If your screen usage is less than 50%, it be more worried about what else is killing your battery........

How is the battery of SGS2 when compared to Amaze

I recently upgraded my phone from HTC HD2 to HTC Amaze. It is very good phone except for the battery part. Battery wise I'm getting roughly the same backup I used to get on HD2 with its much smaller battery. I am a medium to heavy user.
I have rooted the phone and installed custom ROM which has OC Daemon inbuilt for better CPU scaling, also enabled manage power efficiently option (which basically does the same thing as juice defender i.e. disable network connection when not needed), calibrated the battery however by night phone is completely discharged on most days. I'm getting like 16-17hrs battery life. The phone doesn't lose much power on standby, however when the screen is on the phone eats the battery like anything..mostly I get 1% drop on average for every 1-1.5 minute the screen on (with auto brightness) and I'm web surfing or using any app...
I was wondering if the high res. screen is the main culprit on Amaze and if switching to galaxy s2 will help ? What you guys think ? Please let me know, what battery life you get on tmo sgs2, I will help me make my decision..
My amaze sucked juice bad. My sgs2 was lasting a good couple hours longer.

As a former amaze user, who used it and tried everything for 2 months.
The amaze barely gets 3 hour screen on time. I would say 2.5 average.
The galaxy s 2 has the best battery life as of today. I say it's better than the ip 4s or about equal to. We average 4 hours screen on time. Nothing less than 3.5. I've hit 5 hours once. So like I've said many times. Our battery life, is about 1.5-2 times more than the amaze.

Wow actually I had calculated the same thing...the way the % keeps dropping when screen is on, I often wondered the phone would be dead in about 2 hrs..
I don't know gsmarena guys do the battery test, they reported 7:35 hrs of video playback and 3:55 hr on web browsing on sensation in their battery test, when I bought the phone I was expecting similar numbers from amaze especially as it got a slightly bigger battery but boy are they wrong

Lmao, I don't know what Amaze's you guys have, but mine lasts through the whole day with average usage and moderation. The battery life isn't crazy, but you guys are doing something wrong if you can't even pull more than 10 hours of battery life out of it. The SGS2 does have better battery life than the Amaze, but 1.5-2 times more is such a boost, smh.

1. the Amaze can get 10 hours of battery life.. heck it can get 24 hours of battery.. but it all depends what you do with it. Mine was averaging 12-14 hours, but thats just light to moderate usage with about 2.5 hours display on time.
2. I think you should measure your screen on time for your amaze to measure battery life because that is the main factor for battery usage.
3. I've owned both devices and did what I can with the amaze, I even did reviews and comparison for it... probably even before you owned the amaze. So before you think i'm exaggerating the battery life of the sgs2... you should try owning one before you assume anything.
4. 1.5x more may sound like a far cry but it's not.. lets say you have 12 hours of battery usage... the gs2 gets 18 hours with the same usage.. and believe me many gs2 users gets beyond 18 hours.
5. the amaze's battery isn't BAD, it's about average, but it just appears bad because the gs2 has the best battery life out in the market right now.
However you look at it, you agree, the gs2 has better battery life.

Average battery life

Hi,i see the topic of the battery stats, but this is a little different:how much is your average battery life?I don't want to know what's that consume a lot of battery. what that is real important is the daily use.
For this I made this poll
I hope that this will be usefull for all
I can miss a night's charge and still have some juice left, with an average of around 1-1,5 hours of screen on time
I'm quite happy with mine to be honest, contrary to people having problems I haven't had one. Battery is currently running at about 4 and a half hours. I do have a lot of the bloat ware turned off though, and I don't mind minimum or auto brightness. But I do spam the browsers and plume and tasking widgets though. I prolly get around 24 hours of battery too. Have gone longer but average around 15 hours before I stick the charger in. Still have around 30 battery when I do though as I very rarely get down to 20%.
Sorry for the ramble, but I really am quite happy with me little phone

According to the Poll, the battery live rocks on One X.
@Op, what do you mean with battery live?
How much it will last in years or about the duration in hours?
I think I get great battery life with my HOX (latest firmware). I'm usually at 40% around 17hrs or so regular use. Heavy use I get about 9hrs. I also have an HTC Inspire and that thing died way faster.

With normal usage the battery lasts around 48 hours.
Think that's pretty decent.

Is the M9 worth it only for the sake of better battery life ??

Hey,
I have the One M8 and i was thinking about the M9 mainly for the battery.
I bought my One M8 about 7 months back and I've have been having the worst battery life. I get about less than 3 hours of OST (ON Screen Time) it won't go beyond that and I loose about 40~50% of battery in 5 or 6 hrs of standby time. Hell, this one day I charged my phone to it's maximum by 2pm and after listening to music for about 6 hours. I lost about 70% battery with 40min SOT with no call or texting.
Clearly something is wrong here. But... I don't know, maybe it's the LTE network or I was a Note 3 user before I got the M8. Maybe the 2days battery life spoilt me because according to Gsam
-battery life is 1d 1.8h (6h 23m active)
-screen On: 1h 46m (1h 44m MAX)
PS: I'm sorry I couldn't post any posts any screenshots. My phone is 100% charged as of now.
I tried everything from going to stock to custom ROM to different kernels. Turning OFF Google services (Google Now and location reporting), turning OFF mobile data, disabling sync, no GPS, brightness set to 20%, killing media server, greenify system apps and even maintaining the wakelocks using Amplify battery extender and even reading a lot of post on XDA to save battery. I still loose a lot of power.
Is this what 2600mAh has to offer.
Will the new 2,840mAh with 810 processor be any different.
Or should I just send my M8 for repair and hope I don't end with up a refurbished phone because I've had a lot of bad experience with a refurbished phones. I don't wanna do that mistake again.
Or should I get the Nexus 6 and get this over with.

Do a battery test
if after 1 hr it below than 70% it's not good according to htc
You could try turning on Power Saver mode, it may help you out. But personally, even with Power Saver off, I can easily get 4+ hours of SOT on campus with my battery going from 12 AM to around 10:30 PM and still having about 30% at the end of the day.
Just for battery life? Nope. For a better camera, better speakers, better screen, better CPU, better GPU, Sense 7, and other under-the-hood improvements AND for a better battery than the battery in your older M8, yes, it's worth it.

What battery issues?

Reading all the reviews and comparisons of this phone to other flagships before I bought it, I thought I was going to be settling for sub-par battery life. I bought an extra charger for work so that I could make sure I had enough juice throughout the day.
But now, I feel like I've been lied to. This phone has the best battery life I've ever seen on a stock ROM. I'm never below 70% at the end of the day, and I average about 4-5 hours of screen-on time. My battery usage screen usually estimates that I'll get between 28-36 hours of life out of my battery. I charge it every night, so I haven't tested that.
Am I the only one? Did I get lucky? I really don't understand all the fuss I've seen about the battery.
I've only had mine a couple of days but it seems okay to me, better than my HTC One (m7). I ran it down to 20% last night after loading programs and playing with it all day, several phone calls, streaming Rhapsody for a couple of hours. I didn't check the stats but it was off the charger for about 14 1/2 hours. I have marginal cell service in the building where I work and that has always contributed to excessive battery drain. Overall I'm pleased, haven't had an LG phone since the flip days.
I think many people having battery problems are with T-Mobile. They've got a piece of support bloatware that kills the battery, and people in areas of poor coverage (T-Mobile!) will consume a lot also. Plus, both these things heat the phone up so it will charge slower.
My battery drains a lot faster when I setup few things.
In smart lock set trusted places. (this keep on checking for location every few minutes)
Enabled google now for all screens .
With these two the battery drained like open tap; disabled both of em and its very good for such a screen.
My G2 had much better battery life than the G4 . I've debloated , factory restored, turned off location, lowered brightness etc... My free battery will be coming shortly so I hope it is better
This should help answer your question. I have the worst screen on time with this phone, I hit over 3 hours maybe twice. 2 hr 30 mins is usually all i get. I attached 1000 screenshots to prove that lol. Get 4 hrs SOT easy on my M9 and Nexus 6. Fortunately, standby time is glorious on this phone.

Lol... I was thinking I posted this in the general (non-carrier-specific) forum.
Definitely not the g2 battery, but more than sufficient. Usually charge every other night 3-4 hours of sot. Minor debloating done.
Current stats... This is over 13 hours, went to the zoo and took a lot of pictures of the little one.

I get the same battery usage with the G4 "stock" as I did with the G2 "ROM'd and Rooted" which I would assume after the G4 is ROM'd and Rooted it will be better.
I went almost 4 days at one point with out charging my G2. Granted it was lighter use, but still.

This phone has the best battery life I've ever seen on a smartphone, period. And although I haven't been around for awhile, my first rooted smartphone was the HTC Evo, and there have literally been hundreds in between then, and now. So it's safe to say, that I've got my experience to be able to judge what's good and what's not. And although it's just my personal opinion, or I just got LG's one and only "super" smartphone that no one else got, and my battery is unlike anyone else's, it's highly unlikely. This battery is the shiznit, hands down. Not to mention, the LG G Pad X8.3, not to be confused with the older LG G pad 8.3, also has amazing battery life, and pretty much is just awesome all around. No lag, excellent wifi connection, excellent cellular reception, and, the specs are up to date if not advanced. Lg doing their thing right now, we just need to figure out a bootloader unlock and root, and we're good to go.

Yeah, this sounds like the kind of experience I'm having, which doesn't seem to be typical from what I've read. Maybe we're just lucky.
the only time I get crappy battery life is when I am at work and that's a weak signal area. While I'm at home I easily get 4 hours screen time and still have around 20% battery left. Very happy with the battery life.
Battery life reports are always going to be subjective. You never know the full use of a device. Most people focus on data, WiFi, brightness, sot, GPS, and Bluetooth. Never really here much about what apps and what's running in the background.

Agreed. I average only 2hr 30 mins SOT, but then, I keep my brightness on 100%, wi-fi always off. I go same settings on other phones, but get like 4 hrs, but weaker standy-by time
I'm in the same boat as the OP. I've been so surprised with all the people screaming about battery life and I'm like really? Because I haven't been able to kill this thing in a day yet. I am rarely below the 40's % mark at worst when I go to bed. I got the spare battery kit from LG but I haven't had to use it once. I suppose I'm just not as much of a power user as I once thought lol.
For those getting great battery life with 4+ hours SOT, out of curiosity, what screen brightness are you guys using? Do you have auto-brightness enabled? What apps are you actually using? etc. etc. etc.
I have found that the battery life on this phone, so far for me has been about average. No worse or better than I expected. I typically keep my brightness around 50%, have wifi on, and play a fair amount of games. I think the games running are what kills it for me for the most part. If I'm not gaming I can't possibly see using 4+ hours SOT. I get bored of reading things fairly easily.
That being said I just killed a bunch of bloatware verizon had manifested into my phone for no other reason than to make us angry. I also installed greenify to stop some background apps from running. I'm very interested to see if it gets better going forward.
Use lux from the app store for auto brightness. You can tailor to your preference.
