[Q] The Battery Pull Dilemma - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello HTC One M8 Owners, I have a question for you.
Right now, I have a Galaxy S3. Being that I root and often flash things, there have been times where I have gotten stuck in boot-loops and had to do battery pulls. The fact that I cannot do that on this phone is one thing holding me back from getting it, so I would like to know, does the lack of the ability to pull the battery ever frustrate and or detract from the value of the phone? Quite honestly, if I got in a boot-loop with this phone I wouldn't know what to do besides let the battery die. I'm wondering if it's been an issue for anyone here.
Thanks!

Holding the power button and volume up for 10 seconds simulates removing the battery, this works at all times even when your stuck in a bootloop.

That was the only reason I almost didn't trade my S4 for an HTC One. Honestly, it was never an issue for me. On the m7, you held the power button for 10 seconds and it shut off.
Scared me at first when the M8 didn't do the same, but with a little experimenting, I found you just Power and Volume Up for a few seconds and it does the same thing.
Personally, I came from an S3 to an S4 to an HTC M7, and now my M8. I have never regretted going from Samsung and their Touchwiz UI to HTC's Sense. Hardware isn't much of an issue to me, since a massive majority of the apps will never reach the capabilities we have now. I would suggest making the switch

I am stuck in Entering Recovery mode, closing down and restarts again loop. If I do the volume up, it does turns off or it does anyway to restart, so it turns on shortly after and I cannot do volume down to entering fastboot again.
Any ideas?
Edit: Nvm. It seem to solve itself when it gets low enough on battery.

If it is restarting itself, just hold vol down, and don't let go, until you see the bootloader screen. Once it goes through a full "reboot" cycle next time, it will go to bootloader.
Essentially, holding vol down during any power-on or reboot, will trigger going to bootloader. Regardless of how that power-on or reboot was initiated.

Sensitive power button

My samsung galaxy s2 has sensitive power button for some reason. I'm not sure if its the roms i have been flashing. But im on IML74K_Ics_Perfection_UCLD2 and if the slightest touch on the power button turn on my phone when it is off. Or it can turn it when the phone is locked. But i can even press it all the way down for even a split second without it rebooting and going into a bootloop and taking me many tries to actually boot up. Is this a hardware problem with my phone should i restore my phone to stock and return back to tmobile or is this a ics problem with the roms?

Have you tried using any different roms? Is the issue still present? I haven't had or read about this issue before, and I've tried my fair share of roms.
I have tried the darkside roms but im starting to think its the phone and i think is should get it replaced then.
Yeah it shouldn't be so sensative.

i just started experiencing this last night. RIGHT after getting my battery replaced after two weeks of dealing with that problem and finally realizing it was my battery and not my phone. then i tried to take a screenshot of my new battery stats (without all of the huge sudden depletions) and my phone reset as if i held the power button down for 5 seconds. i read about a woman in india getting her button repaired for 550 rupees ($10), but i'm wondering if i should just get a whole new unit and be done with it. the problem with that is dealing with setting up all my apps over again. i have titanium backup (root version) but the last time i got a new phone it didn't put all my apps back on my phone. maybe i did something wrong. i'll email them for detailed instructions and see if it's better to get the button or the phone replaced.
Definitely the power button! After I hardbricked and revived it, my phone had an internal short, which made my phone constantly power off my phone, restart my phone over and over, etc. Josh at mobiletechvideos had to try and work around. He disabled my power button and remapped the wake buttons. So now I wake this phone via the volume rockers on roms that support that
I digress. If you can't send it to T-Mobile to get repaired, give mobile tech videos a shot. Just 35$ and they're super swift

I wonder what's actually causing this power button thing??
I was literally just browsing email, clicking around a little fast, back to home screen and FLASH!!! my camera flashes and all this same $hit starts happening...boot loop, sensitive button, booting out of recovery mode even. I just doesn't add up to sudden button failure...does it??? Why would the camera just flash out of nowhere? Some of the boot loops would also get interrupted and start over. Recovery mode is also kind of screwy. I tried to restore to a backup of Beastmade rom and it just reflashed Sith, the same rom I've been on!! And all my other backups/nandroids are missing. Something is fishy here.
I did recently go to TWRP and have been on the Sith Rom (clones & drones).
Yep its the power button ! I had this problem a month ago , but for me it completely went away .. maybe something was just stuck in between and the constant pressing of the button loosened whatever it was

The thing that has me curious is how mine started acting up. I wasn't even touching the power button. I was just clicking around gmail, went to home screen, the camera flashed and it started boot looping. It would sort of zap out in the middle of a reboot like there was a power issue and lot of other stuff was messed up including TWRP recovery! This tells me there is something else going on...more ROM related. Seems like all this started happening when these ICS ROMS dropped...none of them are as stable as Juggernaut, Paradox, etc...NONE of them. My power button does indeed seem defective, but it almost seems like it was a bi product of something else.

ROM related. No. Its a faulty power button. Been many threads describing your situation. Ends up being a faulty power button. Mobiletech offers a power button service. Its reasonably priced.

I was lucky enough to get flashed back to stock and have a warranty replacement on the way. Still has me wondering if something else wasn't up. Just seems like all the ICS based ROMs have been very buggy compared to the very stable Gingerbread builds. I sure enjoyed my rooted phone but this has been a PITA losing my device...it's my work and life! I haven't been stock in so long it will be interesting to click around a bit and see if I'm not better off stock. I'm due for an upgrade next month so I may well be on to an S3 or whatever else is out.
Just got my replacement this afternoon!!! Man...what a couple of days it's been without it! Holy crap, I had no idea.
Anyway the new phone shipped with 4.04. So that's cool. So far THIS is the most stable ICS rom I've used. :silly:

Dah... just went locally to have it serviced... got screwed at 100$...
Should have searched online before...
I had the SAME EXACT issue. I had to literally remove my power button because my device would reboot every few minutes. I use the volume keys to wake the device and sleep shortcut in the notification bar to sleep. If my device turns off, I have to turn it on with a USB, which is a major hassle but I've grown used to it.

Bootloops, bad ROMs/Flashes

About to purchase the One-X after couple years with DHD and recently, Sensation.
My only concern is that if get a rom that goes bad or gets stuck in bootloops, can this be fixed easilly on the One-X?
On the DHD and Sensation you removed the battery to stop it then Power+Volume down and you could reflash a different rom from recovery and the phone was none the wiser.
My concern on One-X is that even though you can force "reset" the phone via power and home if it gets stuck, that it won't turn it off completely so that you can get back to a power+volume down fix?
Any suggestions? Otherwise i'm out today to grab one.

once you force it to reboot, just hold volume down real fast before it starts booting. You will see it goes to the bootloader screen

HTC Wildfire blank screen

Hi,
I'm sorry if this has already been answered I just can't find it.
My Wildfire's screen froze a couple of times, then the last time I removed the battery and reinserted it.
When I tried to power back up I got the vibrate but nothing on the screen, so I repeated a couple of times with no luck.
I then tried the Hboot method (Hold vol - and power) and I got the Hboot on, but when I tried to navigate using the volume buttons nothing happened, so removed battery and tried to repeat, I couldn't get back to Hboot. I have only been able to get the Hboot screen that one time.
When I power up, I get 1 vibrate and nothing on screen.
When I hold volume + and power button, I get three vibrates and the green light comes on.
When I hold volume - and power I don't get any vibrates, unless I remove the volume - then the power button but still only one vibrate.
I've tried installing the CyanogenMod but no luck.
Is there anything that can be done to save my Wildfire?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Seems like you're in Qualcomm Diagnostic mode. Though I don't remember the solution, some Googling might help

I've tried the method stated on this forum but with no luck.

--- EDIT ---
So you wrote your question again in the "Wildfire S" (Marvel) Forums - in this case the much more important question would be: what phone are you talking about? A Wildfire (Buzz) or a "Wildfire S" (Marvel). Despite the name those have almost nothing in common - they are totally different devices
--- EDIT ---
I'll answer in this thread although you opened another one in Q&A.
You haven't been too specific with your problem but sometimes it helps to have all the details
So here we go:
a) did the phone work correct (besides the freezes) before you took out the battery?
b) is your WF rooted & s-off?
c) which ROM?
d)
When I hold volume + and power button, I get three vibrates and the green light comes on

does this happen when connected to PC or charger or not
e)
When I hold volume - and power I don't get any vibrates, unless I remove the volume

OK, sorry for the lack of info!
My phone is a Wildfire, not a WildfireS.
A: Yes, was working.
B: No, never needed to.
C: Not sure, never kept a record of it. It's one of the first models though if that helps.
D: This happens without USB cord attached. When the USB cord is attached I pull the battery and the green light stays on.
E: Yes, I've tried this for over 10secs before.
F: Yes, after blank screen. I installed on SD card and followed the directions. Bare in mind, I cant set Debug or the charge only setting.
Thanks!

That's what I thought. In this case you won't be able to flash any other ROM - you could just do the usual upgrades by HTC
This doesn't sound to me to be a minor problem (but probably someone else might correct me here) - nevertheless - just to make sure: have you tried to do a hard factory reset following the HTC user guide?
- With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button (instead of holding it)
if this boots your phone up:
- Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button.
- Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE, and then press POWER.
- Press VOLUME UP to start the factory reset
(errm and yes: this will delete all your user data, of course...)
Click to collapse
But I assume you have done that anyway - did you try to connect your phone to the PC (HTC drivers installed, of course)?
How about charging - does the phone seem to behave normal - i.e. if you keep it from charging for a few hrs does it show the red LED for charging mode and the green one for being fully charged?
That's pretty much all I could suggest from scratch. - Hopefully someone else with a good idea will step in here :fingers-crossed:
OK, still have the Wildfire with the annoying blank screen.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a fix?
Thanks!

besides the suggestion of the Qualcomm diagnostic mode (no I don't know anything about that): did you try to power up without the sdcard, yet?
Furthermore I slightly remember that you could do a factory reset using a key combination - but I'm not sure about it.
Same goes for a RUU. Are you able to connect to the phone with the PC?
Really just random guessing - hard if no error messages appear...
Yes, tried with the SD card.
Because I can't see the screen I tried it loads of times, all with different combinations.
I can't get any vibrate from volume down + long hold power.
I will only get a vibrate from volume down + short hold power.
What would be ideal if there's a way to use ODIN PC to flash a new ROM, well that's what I think it is, faulty ROM?
Thanks!

really hard to say as there's not a little information what's going on. What if just the screen is dead? have you tried to wait after boot and insert your pin after a while (I mean try to guess where the numbers might be) and call your number?
Why anyone want's to use ODIN on non-samsung?!
ODIN is purely just for SAMSUNG products
If you have warranty.. put it to service centre.. they will fix it
Need hard reset power off your phone press volume DOWN and power. YOU WILL FIX IT EASYLI.

Hey there!
I'm bumping this because I have the same problem and creating a new thread seemed more bad to me.
Anyway, I'll start from the beginning.
I found out my battery was swollen 5 days ago. It's probably because of my charging habits. My battery life have shortened everyday this 5 days. Yesterday morning I wiped my battery stats to get a better battery life. When I was back home my phone's battery has depleted while I was listening to music.
I came to home, plugged my phone to charge and waited 15 mins to get it charged a bit to open. When I tried to open it, it vibrated but the "green htc text on white background" screen didn't come up. The screen wasn't working. I tried what is said before in this tried. Once I got managed to see the bootloader but the volume keys weren't working (as above) After some moments of rage, my brother offered to test the touch, I opened the phone, (as I dont have a PIN) we waited for some minutes and then he called me. I mimiced the answering gestured and boom, I could talk with my brother.
I bought a new screen as I think screen is broken. But it could be because mainboards screen part is damaged (probably because of my faulty battery, voltage wavings etc.) or something completely different.
Please guys help me. I can't buy a new phone atm so I have to fix this

Ouch sounds like a rough one :/ OK so you have no visual, but do have touch and audio? Are you s-off or s-on? You could try to "blind feed" the rom.zip of a ruu to the bootloader to try restore it. But it may well be that your battery has killed the screen. Have you ordered a new battery?

Phone switches on in the pocket

Is there any way to set the power button not to work while the phone is locked?
I constantly facing the problem that the phone switches off and restart in my pocket. It happens when I lean my body to tight the shoes or squeeze the phone in my pocket in some other way.
Thanks

Eh?
Whilst your phone is in your pocket, you can press power button, then swipe to unlock (before screen timeout) & then long press power button till it restarts - all whilst in your pocket?
I highly doubt this, sounds like you have software issues - are you running a unstable OC/UV?

I can restart the phone by long press the power button. Even when the lock is on. Without unlocking it.
I checked on my friends htc v, which is even not rooted, and it works the same. While the phone is locked long press on the power button causes restart..
I was just wondering if can change that. Never had that problem with the sensation, but that one is a bit smaller

It may be a fault of my cover. The lock of the cover is right above the power button and mayby they just didn't design it correctly..

I havnt heard anyone have this problem before, the power button only sticks out a little bit, and it needs a bit of force to push
Maybe this is an overlooked request to be submitted to some of the custom rom developers.

Besides a phone case no solution
the reason for the long press is it is a life saver.
As we cannot take the battery out of the one x like the sensation, if you are frozen or stuck on bootscreen, you cant exactly pull the battery and put it back in, so by holding the power button for seven seconds, it simulates a battery pull forcing the phone to restart no matter what!
without it if you were frozen on bootscreen or just frozen or needed to restart by cutting off power to the battery and then power up. you would not be able to do it.
I'll have to find a way how to not pushing it so .
Thanks people

Hi there,
I experienced the same thing, when sitting in the car or tighting the shoes.. i'm hearing starting up sound of HTC ... quietly bla bla..
well, I dont like cases i'm not using such, thats why i found a solution for me and till now its working
so if you putting your phone in left pocket, then try to put it with display forward, but if you dont like it that way, then you should start using your right pocket ..that way the power button is staying at the outer side of you and wont be pressed when you "do" something.
hope this could help
Cheers

Note stuck on endless reboot :( won't enter recovery or download mode

I was using my phone normally today and it suddenly died on me and rebooted. Now it won't boot at all and it's stuck on the Galaxy Note II N7100 logo and it'd die out again and then show the Galaxy Note II N7100 logo again, never reaches the samsung boot up logo even. Pressing volume buttons for recovery mode does not work at all, it just keeps on rebooting. Pressing for the download page works but if you press volume up or volume down or do nothing even for a few seconds it reboots again!
My battery was at 60 percent prior to this and I was not doing anything at all. I was using Wanam's rom with adam kernel + s4 theme for two weeks now with no hitch.
Another weird thing about this whole thing is that if I pop the battery at the back it automatically boots up without me having to press any buttons. I've tried EVERYTHING now and I really hope my phone did not just die on me. Charging the phone sorta works but Im not to sure because I have a feeling it reboots without having any actual charging done.

HOLY COW YOU'RE RIGHT!! I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS!! It works now after one hour!
Should I sell my phone now before it goes bad or do you think this is just a random occurance?
You probably hit the power button without knowing it and got stuck. This could be just a simple occurance. Or it got damaged in which case you have to change the power button contact. Not easy but it can be done.

Was doing some research and some people have also experienced this when they accidently dropped liquid unto the power button. I was washing my case awhile ago and there's a remote possibility that this happened albeit only a little. After I got it working it only happened once again and it's been working perfectly since.
I was getting really frantic awhile ago because I really needed my phone at that time lol
