LG G Pad 8.3 not read SD Card sometimes after KitKat update from LG. - G Pad 8.3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My g pad 8.3 sometimes does not recognize SD card after I updated to official stock KitKat update v50020A through LG support tool. It is recognized again after I reboot the tablet. Any permanent fix for this?

Need more info.
Are you hibernating something you shouldn't?
What kind of card?
Have you tried replacing the card to make sure its the device?
Have you fixed the permissions in /etc/permissions/platform.xml?
Have you rooted?
Custom recovery?
Does recovery recognize your sdcard?
Did you eat breakfast this morning?

SD Card Problems in 4.4
I think there is a issue since the upgrade to 4.4 I have just been on mine and twice it shows No SD card present if you restart it comes back ok
Same card as before update so I can only assume its a issue in the 4.4 program
As ggogel don't seem to like SD cards anyway !!

No problem here with sd card after upgrading to kitkat VIA OTA

I'm in Australia too, updated yesterday to V50020a. Have experienced intermittent SD card issues (presumably random unmounting), although the 32gb Sandisk did cop a massive workout courtesy of Play Music's new ability to save to it - loving that! I'm pretty sure this G Pad 8.3 had "quiet time" before the update - can't seem to find it now so I have to turn the volume off at night. This is annoying because it plays a notification sound every time the SD card unmounts Maybe I missed something, suggestions appreciated

Play Music copied about 2gig to it , did so in chunks as the card kept dropping out. I've had no issues with it today and it has not unmounted at all, although I don't think any apps have required access to it since yesterday. Maybe the SD card went into shock yesterday with all the writing it got, it usually is scantly accessed. I should point out that this KitKat update offers the single most useful feature for me - and that is Play Music's new setting of being able to cache to the External SD card - as a subscriber with a large library I can now store so much more for playback offline!!! Very pleased.

I am also very happy with play music and play movies able to save my favorite movies and music to SD card.. even the built-in web browser is able to download files straight to SD card. But I still can't write to SD card by using third-party file manager like FX file manager.

Via a file manager on the tab? Since upgrading to 4.4.2 I can not. I've seen the work around but it involves rooting which I didn't want to do yet.

After updating to 4.4.2 I also noticed that my SD Card is constantly unmounted/mounted which is pretty annoying. Formatting SD Card again didn't help. I have got V50020a ROM, anyone encountered this on V50020b?

You are not allowed to write on external storage with third-party applications on KitKat. Only Some Google apps and LG apps can write to external storage

Yes is correct, with kitkat are restricting write access to SD cards. I use ES file explorer, but there still limitations in its use.

This really sucks! I often copy content to it via wifi, now I can not I don't want to root just yet. If I knew this would have happened I would not have upgraded yet.

Only way is root to fix this or wait for a Update

I also have this problem with 20b!

I has been dealing with this issue ...now with two SanDisk Micro sd cards XC I, I did tried to format in almost all the know ways...tried Linux, Windows, command line, Different adapters, Different computers, tried with the Storage feature from the Android OS,
Now I have two beatiful 64G micro sd cards....READ ONLY. Also if you browse the content in the file explorer from the computer the Delete option is not listed in the explorer.

Same issue here: did you update ROM to 4.3 version? I read that it could contain a setting within the platform.xml file that you find into system/etc/permission folder. See this
I tried it but with no success.
I hope you're luckier
Btw i sent it back to Amazon asking for refund (and they agreed). Bye

I warn you trying this setting. I tried this >>> Editing .XML file. I started getting severe force closes especially Google Frame Work Services. Even reverting did not help. Had to use my Nandroid Backup to go back.
4.3 is sucking so far for 64 GB External SD Card write support. Titanium Backup & Helium both apps can not do automatic scheduled Backups on External SD Card since 99% of the time they do not get Write Access. Only way to do an external SD Card backup is manually after rebooting the phone, even that is hit n miss.

I agree with you. 4.3 is still far from 64Gb SD Card support, and I know that editing this file can be dangerous, but I read that someone was able to restore his card and due to its cost was worth a try. During my tentative, this update didn't have effect (but at least I didn't get more troubles).
Same issue.
64GB SanDisk card from my Note 3 (search brought me here) became read only after 5 months.
I've ended up sending it under warranty back to SanDisk.
I'm glad I didn't loose anything as I've backed it up but still don't like the idea of returning something with a lot of my data and photos I can't delete.

I was having the very same problem. I finally went into the computer management, and was about to throw phone across room....when I tried to format one last time. This time I unchecked the quick format. It is taking longer, but seems to be working...I am keeping fingers crossed.
Full Format has finished and card is saved! Hope this helps anyone in the future.

I initially had problems but after doing a factory reset seemed to fix all. Except random sd card mounting and remounting...
I also see sometimes SD card stops until I reboot the device. But if I use FX Explore I will still access the SD card. My G Pad 8.3 is running stock kit Kat update from LG through LG Support Tool.

Do a factory reset. My tab was throwing errors left and right once it upgrade to US KK. Its perfectly fine now, even running ART.

Also have the SD card unmount once a day since the official German Kitkat update.

not only they mount remounts, apparantly google restrict SD card access so only stock applications can write into it.
is there any way for me to revert back to 4.2.1? one of the reason I bought V500 is for reading mangas and now, thanks to google, with 4.4.2 I cannot download new chapter because Manga Watcher cannot write into the SD card.
I'm having the same problem with my SD card. Been working perfectly for a couple of months, and then as soon the update to Kitkat had completed, I had a message box warning me that the SD card was removed without unmounting. rebooting or removing and reinserting the card fixes it for a while, but it always disconnects again within a few hours.
I'm running stock, not rooted, and the SD card is a "Samsung 32GB Class 10 UHS-1 Grade 1 48MB/s MicroSDHC Plus Memory Card"
I have tried, erasing the SD card using the option in settings, resetting and erasing the device using the option in settings (am I right in thinking that is a factory reset), and then erasing the card again.
I'll try a different card over the weekend, and consider rooting...
I use the same card.
Transferring files through USB is pain in the ass! It unmounted... don't have access to write .... ....
Anyone knows how to report this to LG ?

I also had SanDisk SD card issue where it Unmounted itself automatically sometimes. This problem accrued when I did update my g pad to kit Kat through LG Support Tools. But it is fixed after I do restore upgrade errors through LG PC Suite without SD card inserted in the G Pad.

Thanks for the tip!
I ran the restore upgrade errors through LG PC suite on Saturday, and it has almost completely fixed it.
I still saw the SD card removed message box flash up for a split second when waking from standby occasionally (maybe 3 times over a full weekend of use), but it immediately vanished and then 'SD card inserted' appeared in the notification bar, and the SD card was fully useable. I transferred several GB of data over to it a few times as a test, and it transferred without interruption every time..
I just did a "restore upgrade errors", but it did not fix the "0 bytes" SD card issue for me.
Tried with a SanDisk 64 GB Ultra SDXC and a SanDisk 32 GB Ultra SDHC.

[Q] Checking in on current status of SD card issues and 4.4.2

I put off updating to 4.4.2 because JB was working fine before a three week trip overseas and I didn't want to break anything. Now we are back and I'm ready to apply the upgrade as long as it doesn't break my external SD card functionality.
I have a stock, unrooted G Pad. I use the SD card only for storing documents (.doc, .xls, .pdf., etc.), music, photos, etc. I use the LG file manager to write to and copy from the card. I use PowerAmp Pro to play music from the card. I have no apps installed to the card nor set to write to the card.
Should I expect my SD card to continue to function as it does on JB and without random dismounts after the update to 4.4.2?
Thanks!

I have the un mounting SD card notification and issues since upgrading I had no problem before upgrading so for me it is definitely a Kit Kat fault
Had the same problem here. After kit kat update sd card went nuts.
I followed a tip and formated the sd card on pc and then on the device.
This reduced the problem almost (almost) to zero.

Ended up replacing the 32gb sdcard with a 64gb one that works fine.
The 32gb is on my son's memopad working great as well.
What I was wondering was if the update realy damaged the sdcard or not....???

just factory reset your G pad without the sd card inserted in, this should fix the problem as has for many.

I installed the OTA 4.4.2 update after unmounting and removing the SD card. After the update was finished I shut down the G Pad, put the SD card back in and started it up again. It pulled down all my apps from the Play store and has been working fine since. I've accessed files from the SD card using the LG file manager and Polaris and I've played music from the SD card using PowerAmp Pro. So far no issues and I haven't done a factory reset.

What do you mean, trouble reading or writing to the sdcard? Try formatting the card on the phone itself, that usualy works.
What are you trying to do with the card? it might be that you just are not aware with how Android Kitkat treats the sd card slot?

Apps can only write and edit files that they themselves created on the SD card which is why third party apps are not working. It is to stop rouge apps deleting / creating / modifying files that they shouldn't be.

With files you mean system files or files created by you? You should be able to delete or move files with an alternative file explorer or you might try gaining root (towel root is easiest) to gain admin rights.
If you root your phone, you can remove the limitations that were added in KitKat.
Many 'newbie experts' who say that an 8 or 16GB phone is fine as you can move apps etc. to an SD card are finding out the hard way that KitKat restrictions prevent using the card the same way as it used to be in older Android versions unless the device is rooted.

Someone else had the same problem and they did an equipment swap and the new G3 didn't have the problem.
So it might be the SD card slot itself or its interface and a exchange might be neccessary.
