Do I have to unlock my bootloader through HTC Dev - or is there another way? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
Just got my new HTC One on T-Mobile! I love sense and everything, but I miss my root tweaks. I'm just curious if there is a safe way to unlock the bootloader without using or interacting with HTC Dev? I don't want to risk losing my warranty on the 6-month cracked screen thing.

HTC Dev is the only way, Unless your device is S-OFF

Sorry, but didn't I just read there is a method here somewhere where you can get s-off without buying an s-off'd device?

Yes. But you need to be rooted for it and for that you need to HTC dev unlock. Only the Verizon model can be rooted without HTC dev unlock.

And the only way for s-off is to either get a Dev or GPE model, or win the lottery and your device is s-off'd out of the box for some strange reason? Won't firewater give you s-off without going begging to mama HTC for the freedom to use your $700 device as you wish? I'm confused what firewater does.

Nilay Patel is correct in saying the US carriers are destroying the market, but lucky VZW users. Thanks for clarifying that.

[POLL]Do you wait for S-Off or Unlock through htcdev.com?

I am in a dilemma with my one x, whether to wait until s-off is here or to unlock the mobile through htcdev.com!
But I am thinking about the warranty, I read that flashing the original RUU will revert the phone to the original state. I am from India, So I think I need the RUU with version 1.26.720.2
Please give me some suggestions!
I also very much want to know the answer to this.
Please vote your wish.
Can't resist to flash the latest custom roms, especially leedroid's

What's the difference? I unlocked on htcdev.com
When you unlock through htcdev.com there were some drawbacks regarding warranty. But when you unlock using s-off you can easily bring your mobile to factory state for warranty.
Can some one post how exactly we can claim for warranty when we unlock through htcdev.com?
I can't avoid all the features which will work only with rooting. So finally I had unlocked my mobile through htcdev.com
I'd say wait 1 week before you do it, perhaps next week there is already a way to do it ^^. (That warranty is lost forever, so I wouldn't do it impulsively).
Offtopic : you really have a giant signature OP ;-)!
I still waiting for S-Off. As if now I don't need rooted device since i'm enjoying the stock apps and stock ROM. Once i'm tired then I may unlocked.
Im awaiting s-off just for warranty reasons
Mod or Die
I'm torn. I need root to make several things work in Norway....
I am new with htc.i came from Samsung. I am just saying in samsung when u wanted to go back in original mode u just used official roms and boom u were in warranty. Isnt that the same with htc? i just used htcdev method to remove some craps from 3 network but i am sure i could go back to warranty using an RUU.
And as i spoke for RUU is there any topic gathering all the RUU's? Where can i found them?
Normally flash straight away but had it 3 weeks and still resiited so far waiting for s off

Just search the topic until you find a functional link.
personally I want S-OFF via htc dev. If they are going to try and void the warranty because the software is being messed with anyway why not give me full access.
i unlocked my phone but i got insurance from my carrier, so should i break it my phone might by accident get a knock out of my hand and over the viaduct lol
but I'm a lucky one and got a flawless HOX so i have no need to return it
It would've been nice to migrate app data from my desire HD to my HOX using titanium, but I guess that won't be possible.

As much as i get tempted to go through htcdev i'm going to hang on, especially now i got a 1.28 update through Three UK. There are some seriously clever devs here so i'm sure sooner or later an S-OFF will come.

What app data do you want to migrate? I only brought my SMS and Bookmarks across with me, using SMS BackupPro and Bookmarks to SD. Don't game a lot, so that was never important...
I am waiting for S-Off. I am actually really happy how my phone works in stock form and sometimes custom ROMs can have one little bug or another, so you are constantly flashing, chasing that perfect and stable ROM.
I will likely want to install custom soon, so if there is no S-Off by mid-year, maybe I'll just go with HTCDev.
I'm wanting S-Off rather than using HTCdev as from following the S-Off Dev thread in here the changing of CID to none rather than the stock HTC CID could hinder going S-Off in the future even with a relock. I also don't feel the need to go Custom ROMing while unbranded handsets are getting things updated by HTC.
I'll wait for a couple of weeks post Kernel source release then make my mind up.
Really difficult coming from.my ENG S-Off Desire HD though.

[Q] Is there any way to gain temporary-root without unlock/S-OFF ?

Hi, Im planning to modify /etc/hosts,
Is there any way to do this without S-OFF / HTCDev ?
Thanks,
S-off it is not possible in HOX for now.

Yeah...follow any one of the many guides on rooting the One X. We don't have S-OFF. Did you read anything before asking this question?

How about TacoRoot ? Anyone try ?
I know this works on my oldie stock/factory desire,
and TacoRoot claims to be "HTC Universal Root Exploit 12-30-2011"

i found this but haven't tried it just read the post
If they worked on the One X we would know by now. The One X has been around for a few weeks and to date there is no way to get S-OFF.

He's welcome to try any tool he sees but I am not game especially if there's a risk of bricking the phone.
PS:
The utility is for a wildfire S CDMA, makes me more cautious using it.

[Q] New HTC One -- Where to start?

Browsed the stickies for this stuff, but the closest I found was a pretty old post from before Verizon shut down S-Off.
I have a new HTC One w/ build 1.10.605.8 (Android 4.2.2/Sense 5.0). How far behind is this? Does it mean I have a better chance for exploits to work? I'm making a point of not putting the phone into a position where it might take an OTA. Presumably hacking the phone gets harder with the latest builds.
I would like to root this, if possible. If I can unlock the bootloader that's even better. S-Off not as important, but I'll do it if it's the pathway to an unlocked boot. I'm guessing there are still ways to unlock this (or equivalent) since Big Red shut down our HTC Dev?
Is there a current thread discussing this? Maybe somebody can show me where the latest info is. Or at least tell me what the general strategy is for customizing this device, if it's possible.
I'm pretty comfortable with this stuff; I once had to use a wire to S-Off an HTC Rezound. I just need to know where to go to find the current tools.
I saw references to weaksauce, rumrunner and firewater. Are these current? Can someone steer me toward the latest and greatest???

Since you're on 4.2.2 and 5.0 you should be able to use rumrunner.

Thank you very much.
Looks like this tool sets S-Off? Does that disable/bypass the signature checks in the bootloader, or does it allow install of an alternate bootloader? How do I get from S-Off to a custom ROM?

Not sure exactly, but once you're s-off you can just flash a recovery via fastboot and then flash a custom Rom through recovery.

S-Off trumps all. With S-Off you can do anything with your phone, including unlocking the boot loader and custom recoveries.
I used rumrunner because my older build was identified as being vulnerable to that exploit. I'm not sure about the interactions between S-Off and Bootloader because the device+build-specific rumrunner did both S-Off and unlocked BL in addition to rooting it. It says "unlock" but the experience looked like an engineering bootloader had been installed. The phone acquired a proprietary HTC disclaimer at startup.
If you have an early enough build, I would definitely recommend rumrunner for unlocking it. That program totally pwned the phone.

The warning comes when you go S-Off. Every HTC One with S-Off does that. Rumrunner did its job.

Please Help Me With S-OFF [NOOB]

I am a noob to the htc side of things and am learning about s-off and bootloader unlocking. I have a verizon m7 and it is on the latest update so after trying for 2hrs to get rumrunner working I read that the only s-off method that works for this version is Sunshine. Now I am only going to be using this phone for a few weeks until I can get my hands on a nexus 6 and it has a cracked screen so I just can't justify spending to unlock the bootloader. Is there any way possible to unlock the 5.28.605.2 version for free? And if not that version specifically is there a way to downgrade? I want this so I can run an AOSP rom but if there is no way without paying I might as well just rock stock sense. Also no disrespect to the sunshine devs they have done great work I just can't afford it right now. Thanks!
Edit: Also is there a way to get root without S-off/bootloader unlock so that I can atleast use Xposed? Again sorry for the noob questions im so used to having a nexus that all these things are new to me.
Being locked and s-on, any way you would get root would be temporary and any changes to system would be reset upon reboot. Only way for permanent root is s-off or unlock. (This means xposed will not work.
Only software to s-off and unlock for recent ota is sunshine. You can look at java card or jtag services, but they are more expensive than sunshine.
You cannot downgrade without s-off.

Curious, are you turned off from S-OFF because you are happy stock, or you don't want to pay the $25 for S-OFF.
100% curiosity, feel free not to answer, I'm just honestly curious.
Trying to get some feedback on the payment for sunshine and if people are turned off by it.

I really would love to run paranoid android on this phone but its not so much the price its the fact that I'm not going to use this phone for too long im just waiting for the nexus 6. That being said if it were closer to $10 i probably would have done it. Also sense 6 is way more tolerable than older versions I've used.
