Who will end up returning their m8 because of the camera? - T-Mobile HTC One (M8)

I love everything about the M8 but the camera frustrates the hell out of me, it's like hit and miss trying to get a decent picture. I knew about the camera before buying it but I thought it would be better than reviews say. All the pics I took looks cheesy and I'm considering returning my phone but everything else the phone offers have me on the fence about it!

I think the camera is awesome real colors I have the s5 and the colors are saturated
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using xda app-developers app

OP do you have any photos that you have taken for us to see with the issues you have found? Or is it more of a numbers thing? From the photos I have taken and from what I have seen in the photo thread, everything looks fine.

I take decent pics under the right conditions, I compare pics with my iPhone 5s which takes the more clearer pics. M8 record better videos than the 5s

What exactly are you trying to do with the camera? In all honesty cell phones are horrible if you want photography grade pictures. It has a 4 mp camera while it's not a 13mp or a 16 anyone who knows anything about photography knows megapixels don't mean anything. Its all about lighting and timing.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk

Coming from Note 3 I had same worry. No longer though. Most pictures I take with this are on par with the Note 3. Also I think the camera reviews have been a bit exaggerated.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk

Figured some would be defensive about my post, I have two kids that I love taking pictures of. I get frustrated having to take several pics to get a decent shot

It really would help if we could see some photos with the issues that you are talking about. Saying that a picture looks cheesy does not really describe what you are seeing.

The problem in these pictures is the lighting. Most pictures taken in low lighting with cell phones don't look all that good. I had fuzzy pictures with the note 3 at times and that was a 13mp camera.

i want to return my m8 but i dropped it and it had a lil scratch on the corner. Will they let me return and exchange for m7. m7 audio is far superio to the m8.

This camera is amazing. Way better than my previous note 3

Coming from an iPhone 5s, this camera honestly isn't anywhere near as good as that, but I'm getting use to it.

I dont think so since there is some damage to the phone now, but it could be up to the rep that you speak with when you go into the store

It's all relative man. I have a two year old and quality matters to me as well. It seems you already made up your mind that 5s is better to you. Nobody is defensive about that. Just get s5 cuz you'll always have that in your head. I did side by sides of my most common pictures, day time indoor and outdoor next to note 3, and it rocked. So I'm keeping and am happy. Can't help what you like though. So do what makes you happy....or get a DSLR. Lol jk

Hey I am on a Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition with Android 4.3 and my front facing camera is exactly like yours that you described. It looks like a painting and its quality is terrible, even though it is still 1920x1080. Did you eventuall fix your camera?

Are you sure you have a sprint S3? You're posting from the international version so I'm a little doubtful. If you're rooted it may also be a big with your rom, or maybe a common problem with your phone (if referring to int'l version)
I made a mistake.I have int version and it is not rooted l.maybe is a common problem who knows.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Low light photos tend to be grainy and don't look good, unless you have a very good camera. There is not really a cell phone out that takes low light pictures really well. You don't see the spots or grainy ness when you use the flash because there is more light. Take some pictures in sunlight and they will look great.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Yes i agree with you. When i take pics with more light they look very good and dont have spots. You think that is not a big deal?or maybe is a common problem for s3 and only i noticeed it,i cant belive

This is a problem with all phone cameras. They just don't have good enough sensors and what not to take good low light pics. If you want a great camera for low light images get a real DSLR camera.

I love DSLRs and use them quite often, so I might be able to shed some light (pun intended) on this situation.
I won't go into too much detail about it, but the low light performance comes down to the CMOS image sensor size. This article and this article do a good job of explaining what the camera sensor does, but it boils down to the following: a smaller sensor will be able to absorb less light than a larger sensor. This is why phone cameras will never be as good as (high end) DSLRs. This is also why, for the most part, size does matter when it comes to cameras (not 100% foolproof of a rule, but it stands).
Now, when you're taking a picture in a low-light area, the sensor picks up what it can. This is where software takes over. There are algorithms that cameras (both in DSLR and phone cameras) that interpret the sensor readings and compile them into an image. When the sensor can't read enough light, it's output to the algorithm won't contain enough information to provide an accurate picture. This is where grainy pictures come from and sometimes, artifacts like the ones you've been pointing out.
I'm not sure why it's happening primarily with low-light Red pixels on your phone, but it won't be fixed by getting a new phone. It'll be fixed by getting a $2K DSLR. Even though our cameras are 8MP, they will inherently be worse than a high-end camera. These cameras are nice for snapping a pic of a friend or relative or your favorite dish at that new restaurant, but if you're trying to blow them up to a poster, good luck with that! Having realistic expectations of the phone camera will help you be more satisfied with it.

I should also state that my previous post mainly applies to low-light conditions. Given adequate lighting conditions, this phone camera is phenomenal. The problem with the small sensor is that it takes more light to get adequate lighting. Hope this makes sense.

HTC One will blow the S4 camera away in low-light conditions. That is a fact.
Elsewhere, the S4 camera can take quite stunning pictures.
Of course, like I always say, the photographer affects how good a picture is much more than the camera itself.

That protective film was not really meant to be peeled off, it does not cover the lens or degrade the picture, so I'd leave it on if it's still there.
Anyone find it kinda slow for taking pics? I find my s3 to be instant once I tap it.

My Moto Razr HD, Galaxy Nexus, HTC Thunderbolt and the OG Droid had a lousy camera compared to the S4.
By the way, does anyone have any tips for taking the best looking pictures?
