Is HTC cheating to increase battery life? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have checked various sources about HTC One M8 benchmark, *and ALL anti-cheating benchmark like BaseMark X, Antutu X or Geekbench 3 M8 showed unreasonable low scores compared to Galaxy S5 (the difference of 801ab and 801ac is not that big) *
I suspect that HTC is doing something with the CPU to improve the battery life. That's why they are cheating with normal benchmarks (toggle can be turned off with normal apps, not benchmark applications - Anandtech). The difference of the real world performance maybe negligible but I think we want to be cheated.
Anybody can help me by renaming benchmark apps like quadrant or Linpack and comparing to S5 result? Thanks.

well htc one m8 has and performance mode and you can disable it
so you cant say htc is cheating

If you call software/hardware optimization a cheating in order to improve battery life, i hope they cheat ever more!

I recognized what OP said before from a review on ePrice (Taiwanese). HTC is definitely doing something subtle.

I thought that Anandtech said the toggle allows your normal apps can run with the CPU level in benchmark, not to turn the "benchmark optimization" off.

I totally agree about battery optimization. But the way HTC doing is they want to deceive customer that they are the best of both world: benchmark and battery. I don't care about benchmark, just the real performance but many people care. Just think about the benchmark scores, if they didn't cheat and all reviews show that the scores are only 3/4 compare to S5, what would you think? Antutu X showed only 27k, which is equivalent exactly 3/4 of GS5 (36k).

It's cheating intended. Lower the CPU with the performance similar to to 1.9 2.0 GHz but still advertise as 2.5 GHz CPU!

Oh 2.34 GHz. Actually I agree with you. Last year Snapdragon 600 on my M7 is totally enough. We only need better GPU, no need for CPU. But I'm still waiting for any manufacturer dares to lower down the CPU "officially" to increase the battery life (not in a subtle way like this), similar to HTC itself shrinked down the number of MPs for a bigger pixel size.

[Q] Benchmark low - how to push the benchmark higher?

Hello!
So, I have a DHD with the Revolution HD ROM (2.0.8) and the Buzz Sense kernel. I have locked the CPU to min/max 1516MHz Perf. scaling and, upon running the AnTutu System Review 1.2("System Benchmark" under Market) I get a score of 1879.
Yet in the Rankings I see that the #2 device is a DHD with 2.2 @1516MHz with a whopping score of 2774!!!!!
So, how could I reach those heights? The only thing I can think of is the slow SD card that came with the mobile (read/write scores: 34/117), but other than that what could be holding me back?
Cheers
T
I have reached pretty high scores while testing, but then the overall rom smoothness has pretty much sucked. It is normal that synthetic benchmarks give lower results when you use a custom rom, the optimizations that ensure general smoothness and usability cause it. One big reason is CPU scheduling, in custom rom (custom kernel) cpu time is divided for each task in a different way, thus reducing the overall benchmark score.

Aha... but then this means that this or the other ROM do not let a specific app (say, a heavy 3D game) take the phone to its full potential...
Incorrect, it is just the synthetic benchmark that suffers. Games will run fine, faster than stock.
Jkoljo's right. The overall system speed is much better, performance is better, but it sucks a little in benchmarks. If you are so desperate to see high benchmark scores(I was once too! )try kamma's 1.4 kernel.Quadrant 3200.Need I say more?

Well, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter - I haven't seen an app or game that runs slow or choppy or whatever. It's just for the heck of it

Anyway, with Lee's and Apache's kernels I get about 2500-2600 in Quadrant.CPU clocked all the way up to 1.5 GHz of course!

Leedroid but what kernel

Hi all,
I've got Leedroid and would like to know how the hell people get the 3000+ scores on quadrant ?
I've used most of the roms with a lot of the kernels but the most i get is around 2500 - 2600 , i've heard that the kernel by Kamma is a good one but i'm at a loss as to which one i should use.
So if anyone could point out which one i could use for .
1. Stability.
2. Battery saving.
3. Benchmarking (without smoking my device of course)
Any answers would be appreciated.
Thanks.

the first thing you need to understand is quadrant is ****, it is not an acurate indication of the speed of your device, a few devs have made kernels that trick quadrant into giving it massive scores, but in reality there kernels are not the best that being said, you wont find a better kernel for stability or speed than leedroids one, it is flawless you can download it here

Confirm that the newest kernel of Lee is the best!but in a few days he prepare a new awesome BFS kernel...
Mmm badly ****ed scheduler. My favourite.
If you want good quadrant, buy the paid app which gives higher scores than the free one. Do the I/O hack which core and lee droids use. Use Leedroid kernel at max freq, performance governor, and finally run it in airplane mode.
Follow all those steps and you will get around the 3000 score.
You should state if you use quadrant standard or advance when posting results as they do differ. Otherwise it's like comparing oranges to mandarins. They are both orange but one is always bigger.

Yea it's just the standard version of quadrant, I thought that it would do the job.
Also i don't want to trick it or actually buy an app just so it can give me higher scores, that's not actually helping at all, i'll try the airplane mode to see if that helps, my phone is rapid anyway so it's only for my own satisfaction and to see how high i could get the score to go to.

[Q] overclock

hi guys i would like to overclock my desire to one of the maximums how can iget linpack scores at about 60. if you go in top devices in linpack people have 1804 mhz or 1600 hod do i overclock that much. what rom, what kernel. Are thosescores real.Thx
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_mDTLphIVY
You can't overclock the desire anywhere near that. Why do you care about the scores anyway?
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
yeah the score on linpack is important to me, because thats what the speed depends from.if you go in lipack top devices you may clearly see 1804 on the nr 1 score and 1600 on the last.but even if it cant go at high then which rom may go the highest. thats more what im asking for 1800 is just a example.
1190 on most kernels. Shouldn't be important as its not the same as real world speed. You have a lot to learn

Actually he doesn't. Obviously he done his part on researching and he knows what he wants. Linpack is a tool every Desire owner should have on his device and run it as often as possible. After all we all buy the most expensive graphics cards to run 3D mark all day long, not to play games or to bother ourselves with our needs, size of our screens and resolution we intend to play on.

These linpack and quadrant benchmarks are not exactly synonymous with SANDRA though. These don't give a realistic perspective on how well a phone will run. The only use is to compare your device with one setup against your device with another set up. Trying to beat the devices of others' is futile.

What subject? This thread was predestined to be doomed before you posted it.
bechmark scores doesn't show the real daily performance.
i guess a ordinary desire takes a score of 1300 from quadrant. (correct me if i am wrong)
miui x-part rom takes it to 2500-2600... does it effects daily use, absolutely not...
on the other hand overlocking is not necessary, in my pov. you make your device hotter, unstable etc. and more importantly you will drain your battery much faster. and we all know that desire's battery isn't great.
but who takes those score and why? i guess those kernels are specific for bechmarking and not for daily use. i clocked my desire 998mhz for normal use and even less when the screen is off...

OneX vs GS3 GPU performance

Although Exynos has the better CPU, the GPUs are quite similar in performance (3D) according to these Antutu scores:
http://www.phonearena.com/news/AnTu...Exynos-shows-20-gain-vs-the-HTC-One-X_id29794
Leaked benches before the S3 launch indicate some advantage though

I think there are enough HOX vs SG3 threads already in here..why create a new thread just to discuss one aspect of the phone >.>

SGS3 is 20% faster when the HOX is in battery save mode. So what?
Or haven't you seen the image closely? The HOX's battery is low. Also if the HOX has been used for a while, the temperature might have been up and the scores are lower. The highest I've had on mine is 11.4k, someone posted with 11.9k (that was on 1.28).
Edit: phonearena DOT com/news/Samsung-Galaxy-S-III-rocks-Quadrant-AnTuTu-and-NenaMark-2-benchmark-tests_id29795
Here the SGS3 has 11.4k. I can hardly say that this counts as "faster".
Yep,
Sgs3 scored 11.4k on AnTuTu, yet my HOX gets 12k
My HOX isn't even running 4.0.4 like the sgs3 is, so - read into this as you like.

Plus, we're getting these scores using a Gingerbread kernel, so IF or WHEN htc release a true ICS kernel for the Tegra 3 one X, maybe our performance will increase, who knows.

Yep, my thoughts exactly.
As I've been a Galaxy S user through the 1st & 2nd models, over in the Samsung forums - they too, see AnTuTu as the best & most accurate bench software.
So, if our HOX is already matching (& in some cases beating) the SGS3, with a lower android OS version & operating on a gingerbread kernel, I really don't see the massive improvement that the exynos offers over our tegra 3 device.
.... At least not in this case.
- plus, at least we get an exclusive range of nvidia optimized games too.

the point is that exynos has an overall advantage (slight, not overwhelming) over the T3 but while generating less heat and therefore eating less battery (which is already very large by comparison)
so if they'd run antutu in loop mode, the GS3 will keep running it long after OneX died
all in all, exynos the better CPU with comparable GPU, give them credit where credit is due.

Back in the days regarding the PC gfx battle, there 3dfx, ATI and nVidia, and nVidia beated them all one by one. And I was the first who jumped to use Geforce 256. What make me comfortable even at present time about nVidia is, they really WILL push out revised drivers when necessary. Just be patient guys.

First off all the GPU in GS3 is 50-70% faster than Tegra.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5810/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-performance-preview
Second of all, the CPU is better, its made out of 32nm, plus offers features such as the 128bit which are featured in Cortex A15. Not to mention this isn't a final product
There's no such thing of Gingerbread kernel or ICS kernel, the kernel we are on is close to 3.0.x kernel, fyi the next number update should bring us to 3.0.x if I'm correct.

There is so many factors and details in the soc that its hard to say which is better for instance the tegra 3 does use single channel memory but i believe it runs at a higher clock, also this is only an issue if there is a bottle neck here.
Just ran Antutu on my asia htc one x 128 stock and got 1198 without a restart or clearing ram, which i admit is highest i ever got but still, means nothing

I fail to agree with anything you said, except the moddle paragraph.
As long as SGS3 GPU is not slower than average, it doesn't matter how fast it is.
You won't get special enhanced games for it, it's not nVidia.

yeah what is everyones obsession with benchmarks its just a number..
Benchmarks just a number? Tell that to people who drive race cars.
0-60 in 3 seconds is still better performance than 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. If both cars have the same engine, same gearing and weigh the same, then something else must determine why one is slower than the other.
Same way with our phones. Benchmark tests, especially AnTuTu, do offer insights into the performance of our machines. So, instead of giving the snarky answer that 'benchmarks don't matter', just say you have no idea or don't post at all.
yes maybe numbers are more applicable to cars. but this is a mobile phone forum not a car forum.....
the benchmarks mean sod all. the actual experience of using the phone is what matters.
benchmarks can vary from the slightest differences in environment, so yeah it is just a number, and will change for almost anything..

well seeing as the benchmarks can change literally from one minute to the next, and the fact they aren't that consistent, that essentially proves that the numbers don't mean as much as everyone makes out.
And therefore instead of basing how good your phone is operating on benchmark scores, just judge it on the actual performance of flicking through screens, loading apps , playing games etc etc - if there isn't a problem there, which i bet in the OPs case, there isn't any general performance issues, just a lower score. if there isn't any actual performance issues, then what the hell is the problem?
Hold on everyone. Small fluctuations in benchmark scores are nothing but a consistent drop of 25% is more meaningful, especially if all that changed was the kernel.
Why does everyone on here seem to just repeat what they read last week only with attitude added and regardless of factors such as severity.
To the OP... might be an idea to go back to stock and run several benchmarks to get a good overall picture. Note all the different scores for different tests (CPU, GPU, memory etc). Flash this kernel again and run several benchmarks. See which tests are affected and report your findings to Faux.

Numbers shouldn't be inconsistent. My scores fall within 0.5-1% of each other every time I run them.
Certain ROMs can have a major impact on performance. Just like going to 4.0.4 and Sense 4.1 made a huge positive performance difference. Guess what, you could actually see that difference with 'useless' benchmark tests too.
Op,
