I rooted when I got the phone and want to upgrade to 4.4.2 from 4.2.2 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have the 4.2.2 rooted, and I'd like to upgrade to 4.4.2, is it really as simple as just getting a 4.4.2 ROM? or are there any other things I need? I'm sorry I'm pretty new when it comes to android stuff, it scares me really the thought of accidentally getting a $700 paperweight.
other information:
baseband version is M919UVUAMDL
kernel version is 3.4.0-453951 [email protected]#1
build # is JDQ39.M919UVUMADL
OK so an update. I guess I literally don't have any idea what I'm doing, I just spent about 2 hours reading around here and honestly couldn't find a single guide or even where to start on how to do this, install a custom rom or anything. I seriously regret rooting and wish I could just do this OTA...... the root benefits do not outweigh what i'm expected to know to upgrade now

Hello friend, do not be discouraged. Do you have access to a PC? I sure hope so. First things first, download the latest version of TWRP recovery, it's great. Flash it via ODIN in the PDA slot. Okay now you have a good new recovery, now you need the latest baseband. What you need to do is download the NB4 baseband before you do anything as far as getting a ROM. There are tutorials in the general section of the T-Mobile s4. You're going to download the modem, flash it via ODIN by extracting the zip and placing it into the phone slot of odin(the tutorials are way better at the steps then I am) then flashing, and then you'll be on the newest baseband(modem). Then you need to find yourself a ROM. Thess can be found in the Android development section of the T-Mobile s4. I personally recommend Insane Kitkat. But find one that you like... I hope this helped friend. Let me know.
Edit: if you're not sure how to get to any of these things, Google them! Google NB4 modem T-Mobile s4, Google TWRP T-Mobile s4.. Etc.. It's easy!
Edit edit: here friend, links

So I JUST did the NB4 thing you linked and it worked fine, I already downoaded the insane rom, it looked cool.
I guess my next question is, what exactly do I do to install the rom?

Alright so you've got nb4 modem and twrp recovery now? Did you make sure nb4 stayed? Is it in your phone info? The baseband should end in NB4 now. We'll once you have the ROM, place it on your external sd card then boot into recovery by turning off your phone. Now hold the volume up key + Power until the device boots into Samsung logo and you'll see blue letters at top left, let go of buttons at that point. You'll see TWRP image then you're in your recovery. Now you're gonna go to advanced option or whenever the advanced wiping option is located. Wipe system, internal, etc. Wipe everything EXCEPT external SD card and the last option, don't wipe external because that's where the ROM is. Now, go back to home of the TWRP, DO NOT REBOOT. Now click install, navigate to your external sd card and find the ROM. Select it and it select full install. You're given a bunch of different options as to what you want added. After it installs, reboot and you're good to go. Thess instructions can be found on the page where you got the ROM. He tells you to do a full wipe, etc. Let me know how it goes.

soooooooo yeah. I did that. moved the zip over to the SD card, booted into recovery mode, wiped, went back to install and now I can't find the zip. i know it's there because I double checked to make sure it was moved. it would help if TWRP wasn't so picky and chooses the FIRST thing i come close to tapping. I think I just screwed up
So I think I just found it, it was way at the bottom, and I like I said I couln't move anything without going somewhere else, almost always.

I'm confused friend. So you moved it to your external sd card? And when you went into the install option in TWRP you made sure you were in the external sd card section? At the top it says internal by default every time and you have to tap it then navigate to external then find your file. Easiest way is to make a folder on external called "ROM" place it in there, then go into recovery and flash. What do you mean by TWRP being picky?

[Q] How to flash a rom?

First off let me say I'm new to root. I rooted my evo last night by following the 2.2 root video guide. Now I'm looking for a rom and kernal that's right for me so please be patient with a noob.
Can someone explain to me (in noob terms please) how to install a rom and kernal. If there is a video guide that would be great. I assume all roms will come with the same files so once I learn how to do it I should be set.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Please use the search tool. Most roms in the development forum say how to also.
And check the sticky in the same forum.

PEOPLE USING AMONRA RECOVERY THE ROM AND KERNEL MUST BE ON THE ROOT OF YOUR SD CARD. ONLY ON CLOCKWORK RECOVERY CAN YOU SCAN THROUGH FOLDERS TO FIND YOUR ROM/KERNEL. SOME PEOPLE SWITCH RECOVERYS WITHOUT REALIZING SO TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE I SUGGEST PUTTING ALL ROMS/KERNELS ON THE ROOT OF YOUR SD CARD. ALSO, WHILE ON AMONRA RECOVERY TO GO BACK A MENU/SCREEN YOU MUST PRESS VOLUME DOWN AND VOLUME UP AT THE SAME TIME.
1.) To install a new ROM you first have to download the said ROM. (Obviously.) Second of all, you have to find the kernel you want to use. Most ROMs come with kernels but you can still download the kernel of your choice.
2.) Once you have the ROM and kernel of your choice, go into recovery mode by powering off your phone, turn it ON WHILE HOLDING the VOLUME DOWN button, do not let go of the volume down button until you're at the boot screen. Select "Recovery" by pressing the VOLUME DOWN button and selecting it by pressing POWER.
3.) You're now in recovery mode. Make a NANDROID backup (varies on how to do it depending on which recovery you're using) if you're on Clockword Recovery scroll down until you see something saying "nandroid" when there select it with POWER, then select the option that says "Backup". (Not sure how AmonRAs recovery works exactly.)
4.) Wipe data/factory reset twice, wipe CACHE twice, wipe Dalvik-cache twice. (Dalvik-cache is located in "advanced" in the main recovery screen.)
5.) Choose "install zip from sd card" then "choose zip from sd card", press up once and it'll bring you to the bottom of the list and you should see your ROM, select it, then install it. Once done installing, go back and reboot your phone, it should be all done now. IF, IF, IF, you have another kernel, after installing your ROM, re-wipe CACHE and DALVIK-CACHE, THEN install the kernel.
You're all set.
Ok simple enough. Thank you for the info. Can I download the rom directly to my phone from this site or do I need to download it on my computer and move it to my sdcard?

You can download it from your phone, but make sure it's on the ROOT of your sd card. I prefer downloading it from my PC, then putting it on my sd card.
So you mean make sure its on the sd card itself and not in a file like downloads right? Also can I delete the PC36IMG file so it doesn't do that update check every time I go into bootloader?

Depends what recovery you are using. Ra recovery has to be in the root folder of the SD card. Cwr you can actually go through folders and search for the zip. So it wouldn't matter where you out it on SD card for clockwork but If ra recovery and its in a folder in SD card you won't see it and can't search through folders for it.

Switched to ra recovery and couldn't find them. Realized then it had to be in root folder. Thought somehow I lost them during the process. I have a backup on my pc also just in case.

[Q] Nooby Questions about Flashing/Rooting/ROMs.

So, I guess I'll begin by saying I'm new to Android. I feel so dumb saying that, but that should clear thing up a bit, as I have no clue about what "flashing" is, or "modems," and Lord help me, because "Odin" sounds like a really funny name.
So, I do have some precedents with iOS, and I know how to work with that, but I am a total noob with Android.
So now on to the Questions, there will be a few.
1) How to Root Epic 4G Touch- How safe is it? I do know I get things like Clockwork Mod, which I believe is for loading things.
2) Installing Custom ROMs- How do I "flash" these ROMs, and what exactly is flashing? I have been looking at certain ROMs, and I guess it is down to Starburst and Caulkin's.
3) Does Rooting/Installing erase the things on my phone?- I currently have my phone loaded with things, will rooting/installing ROMs delete this? How can I create backups?
4)LoS- I heard LoS happens more often on rooted phones. Is this true?
5) Kernels- What in the same hell is this?- Any best one of these out there? What do they do?
6) Tutorials for any of these?
Oh, and I'd like to say that I'm stock, running modem( can someone tell me what this is again?) EG30. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys. I'll update the thread if I have any new questions. xD
1) watch and follow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kExN-Y2pfxA
so far its kinds controversial wether its safe or not but i think it is
2)first turn off your phone second hold power and vol up and it will turn on into clockwork mode then wipe data/factory reset from menu then wipe cache from menu. choose install zip from menu then click choose from sd. then find it and click and install.
3) rooting and unrooting won't wipe data but installing roms will
4) its been shown on both rooted and unrooted phones so we really don't know.
5)DONT PLAY WITH THESE unless you know what your doing
i think they are the #1 reasons for soft bricking phones.
i don't exactly know how to explain it but they affect how your phone does what it does
whether it over clocking of voodoo color

Thanks man, just one more question, have you rooted? I want to know from people whose phones are successfully rooted, as I don't know much about Android, and I would probably kill myself if I ****ed up such a beautiful piece of machinery.
yup im rooted and i got to say i like my phone being rooted
there are less restrictions placed and since i have had android for while now and my last phone was rooted i coulnt stand being not rooted
also i used to have los daily once or twice but it was drastically reduced after doing this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VDxEnO1tow for me

Yes it will let you install any rom that you want as long as you also insstall clockwork mod (CWM5) it also in the instructions on how to root.
No this will not mess up your activation just start flashing roms till you find one you like. please just remember to do a backup inside cwm once you are rooted you will see an option there for it. This will let you go right back to how your phones is right now.
Thank you so much! Also, last nooby question, I promise, I heard something about a Binary counter with Odin, will flashing roms/rooting with that one click root increase it? Also, what happens when it does increase?

Assuming you are using ClockWorkMod, wiping data and cache will not affect the information on your external SD card. If you select "advanced" from the CWM main menu, it will provide an option for partitioning the SD card. I haven't messed with that item, but I'm guessing it could wipe data from the external SD card.
I use the ClockWorkMod backup/recovery and it works great. I also use Titanium Backup. It will allow you to backup all of your applications and files and then restore after you've wiped everything and installed a new ROM. Titanium also requires rooting.
I started out using the Odin ROM and has some issues, so I reloaded the stock ROM and then flashed the Starburst ROM with LoST kernal. I'm having great success...great battery life and all is well.
No when you wipe data its on the phone but not pictures on the SD card. Its easy once you get going.
Email me if needed I can walk u thru.

[HOW-TO][GUIDE] So you want to install CM10 alpha on your Retail Droid Razr M? 11-16

SO YOU WANT TO INSTALL CYANOGENMOD?
SO! You might be new to Motorola, or Android, or Maybe even smartphones in general! I put together this Guide/Thread to help anyone new to the RAZR M with the installation and usage of Cyanogenmod on this phone!
First of all, i just want to say thanks to Hashcode, dhacker29, and any others who helped make this a reality on the Droid Razr M
NO ONE, OTHER THEN YOU, ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING YOUR PHONE INTO A PAPER-WEIGHT!! YOU ARE TO BLAME!
Before we flash, we must understand, there WILL be bugs at the beginning. most notably, Camera, WiFi and calls are a bit wonky so make sure this will work for you!
Requirements:
A rooted Droid RAZR M (either jellybean or ice cream sandwich, preferably jb ota)
The newest Safestrap.apk link (3.05.20 at the moment)
Rom of choice.
Now we have
CM10
CM10.1 Preview
AOKP alpha
The latest gapps for Jellybean Gapps
Steps for Installation:
0) Make sure you're rooted!!! This WILL NOT WORK UNLESS YOU'RE ROOTED!!!
1) Download ALL of the files above and put them in a place where you will remember, for me, i put them on the root of my SD Card.
2) Locate the Safestrap APK on the sd card using a file manager and install it.
3) Open the Safestrap application. You should get a popup from Superuser asking for permission. Allow it.
4) Next, hit the "Install Recovery" option and wait. This should only take a couple of seconds.
5) After safestrap is installed, power off the device. Once its off, power it back on. After the Motorola Splash screen, there should be a new, Safestrap screen. we're getting there!
6) On this safestrap screen, it should say "Safestrap Disabled" in red letters with the words "recovery" in the bottom left and "Continue" in the bottom right. Hit "Recovery"
7) Safestrap should boot up now. The screen will look like TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) to those that are familiar with twrp.
7.5) (OPTIONAL) Make a backup of your stock rom by pressing backup and sliding to backup.
8) Now, we must set up a Rom Slot. In the Safestrap menu, press "Boot Options" in the top left, which will have a blue outline.
9) Next, press ROM-Slot-1. System Partition and Cache Partition cannot be changed but the Data partition can. I recommend using 1 gb, unless you plan on installing a lot of apps.
10) This should take a while. After it is complete, the new Rom Slot is activated, meaning it will boot from that new slot from now on.
11) Press the home button to return back to the main screen. Now that we have a rom slot, we can install Cyanogenmod! From the main screen press "Install". It should launch and File Explorer-like UI with your SD Card already loaded. If it is on your SD Card, just scroll down until you see the rom and press it. Then slide to unlock.
12) After the rom installation is complete, we must install the Google apps (Gapps for short). When the installation is complete, hit the back button and find your Gapps package. install it like we installed Cyanogenmod. After the install, hit reboot system.
13) We are done! When you reboot, you should see the Motorola splash screen and then the safestrap screen, BUT, it will say "Safestrap Enabled" now and the picture will look different. Either wait the 10secs or press the "Continue" button on the bottom left. You should boot into Cyanogenmod
FAQ:
Q) Would you recommend installing the Cyanogenmod 10 Alpha?
A) Absolutely! Although it may not be a daily driver, its a good taste of what to come and VERY stable for a first release.
Q) Is it reversible?
A) Yes! 110%! If you want to go back to stock, but keep the CM10 on the rom slot, just go back into boot options, press the "Stock" option and hit activate. It should boot stock motorola android
Q) This is great! Who should I throw my money at?
A) Hashcode and dhacker29. They are awesome and TOTALLY deserve donations.
Q) This sucks! It made my phone come to live and eat my dog! Who do i blame?
A) Yourself. You take the responsibility for what you do to your phone. Not hashcode, dhacker or me.
If you run into errors, have questions, or any suggestions, don't be shy to post in here
Mods, I was unsure wether to post in General or Development, so if this is considered development, you can move it
Awesome guide. I have been playing with CM all day after it was released last night and loving it. However, I had trouble mounting my sdcard while attempting to install. I ended up using adb to push the zip to the new rom while in recovery and it worked like a charm. I am assuming that this might work for people without an sdcard at all. Perhaps this is worth noting? I am not quite sure, this is my first smartphone

Alright. This is definitely a good guide though! Keep up the good work.
The SD card is located as /external_SD/ in recovery, you can choose internal or external bubble but either way keep going up directories, until you get to the root, then locate the /external_SD folder
Also I suggest putting this link in op
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/10/16/droid-razr-hd-razr-m-and-atrix-hd-all-rooted/
So people can have the proper tools with which too root with or else safe strap and cm are pointless

I saw the directory, but it wasn't mounting. I have a feeling it has to do with my sdcard however. It's a pretty old card.

Also I suggest putting this link in op
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/10/16/droid-razr-hd-razr-m-and-atrix-hd-all-rooted/
So people can have the proper tools with which too root with or else safe strap and cm are pointless

Was thinking I may be able to get some help in here. I just got my RAZR M yesterday, rooted and Safestrap and running Pimp My Rom scripts. In Pimp My Rom I can download BeatsAudio as a .zip. I downloaded it but can't figure out how to flash it via Safestrap. The install tab in Safestrap is inaccessible to me.

Are you still using the stock ROM? Flashing to the stock is disabled atm.
what paul said ^.
if you really want to flash something, try making a backup, setting up a rom slot, and restoring to the rom slot. that'll allow flashing, idk if itll work though.

Ah yea I'm on stock. If I was to set up a rom slot and restore to it it would just be identical to what I'm currently running correct? And by restoring to a rom slot my current slot wouldn't be harmed or modified correct?

NEED HELP!!!

so i am running Galaxy Mod rom on my phone, and loved since the day i flashed it. but since i flashed it ive noticed certain things that turn me off to it. (SORRY to the maker). so im looking to put another rom on my phone, BUT!, no matter what computer i connect to cannot get another rom onto my phone, it says it can be put on there, that the device is malfunctioning. i tried a different data cable, a different computer, and putting it on my sc card, it wont reconize or even see the sd. i downloaded straight from the site, cannot find the rom in recovery. i looked in every file and fold on my phone, im thinking the rom is locking me out, it is having its issues as well, the time dissaprears, the status bar force closes, freezes, contacts freeze up and force close, phone calls are dropped.
i feel like my phone is falling apart. i cannot get a rom on there, i cant get it to reconize the external sd card, ive redownloed and installed the driver for my phone. nothing is working, and the problems its having are happening more frequent. never had this problem with any other flash
any recommendations?

Sounds like you got a really bad flash. You are in luck that it at least boots because you can at least
If all else fails I suggest you try ODIN flash stock rooted. Have you tried to get into download mode ? can you get into recovery ? I didn't see if you mentioned that.
Look for the stock rooted ROM in the root with out tripping the flash counter thread

did you try reinstalling the samsung drivers onto your pc? is your sd card readable in other devices or your pc? and i'm assuming you've tried mounting the sd card in settings/storage?
If you have a bad flash maybe you can go into goomanager or the xda app and download a new rom directly to your phone and flash it. Maybe that will help.

I don't see where he "explicitly" states internal SD card he just said SD card or external SD card.
I know you said you searched through every folder but I know when I flash tw based ROMs all the contents of my internal SD card get moved to storage/emulated/ legacy or storage/emulated/0 maybe check there.

is galaxy mod rom a TW based or AOSP based?
and are you talking about internal SD or external SD not being recognized? and on your computer or your phone or both?

it's also depend on whether it's modified from TW and AOSP features or AOSP and add TW features
depend on one another, the rom might or might not support the format of the external sd

Well. I thought I was in luck, my wife has a s3 with kailisjr's wicked sensations rom. I grabbed her version, being the same phone, moved it to her ext sd, pit the sd into my phone, went to my file browser, moved it to my internal, went into recovery which is the latest team win. It saw it. I was soo happy. I wiped all neccessary things, went to flash wicked rom, failed to load, that's the only error. My wife's phone is the same as mine but blue. Now, stuck on samsung screen. In the midst of excitement that recovery saw the rom, I didn't make a back up
To answer the other post. I only used Odin a few times, and not really familiar with where and what to download. I am pretty good about flashing just with recovery. I can get into both down load and recovery. Just won't boot up now because of well...no rom. I did not try and mount the ext sd I thought that it would auto sense it. Will try that now.

it sounds like you didn't wipe cache, dalvik. go back in recovery and wipe them
and also flashing new rom might take some time for it to load, so be patient

Ok so I went into recovery, it won't see the ext sd, I go to just try and factory wipe, cache and dalvik, it hangs in the cache wipe saying the path to the partition cannot be found.
And now the same for dalvik
Time for Odin it seems. Go to the "root with out triping flash counter" thread. Download odin 3.07 and the at&t stock 4.1.1 with root injected. Place in download mode. Makes sure its detected and flash it in the pda spot.
You could do a full wipe and erase data as well and see if it lets you flash a ROM then. Another possibility

so let me get this straight
you flashed galaxy mod,
it wouldn't let you read ext sd card correct? (if so you needed to format it, it seems like it is running off AOSP and aosp doesn't support exfat on ext sd)
and now you're trying to flash wicked rom, but it wouldn't let you install?
if so it is either bad file or outdated recovery.
and if you're stuck on samsung screen, if wipe dalvik and cache partition + factory reset don't work
Odin back to Stock Rom
and start root, flash rom again

Storage issue...

Hey guys! Its been a while since I've rooted a phone (HTC Inspire 4G) but last night I rooted my S3. Today I was checking storage and it says I have 2.62GB left on my internal SD card. I run the numbers on apps, downloads, etc. and it just doesn't add up to using 9GBs of space. I'm running LiquidSmooth with gapps (which downloaded my previous apps from stock via my account). Can someone help me out with this? Even if I have to completely wipe the storage space to get the room back, I'm fine with that. I just don't like not having space especially when there should be way more since there are no pictures or music on the phone. Thanks everyone and its good to be back flashing!
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I'm also running into an issue finding flashable .zips that are in my /download folder in Astro but not found when using CWM. Weird...
*Edit*
Disregard not being to find them... Apparently I have a separate folder labeled /sdcard/0 that I have no idea how it was made... Is there a .exe to full wipe/format my sdcard so I can start with a clean slate and then simply restore my current ROM/Kernel? Factory reset, format system, wiping cache and dalvik cache then restoring backup isn't working.

It is now that I reported it for being in the wrong section and a mod moved it.
Think before you post.
Anyways, the internal SD card is always going to have much less space then as advertised on the phone. My phone is a 16GB and out of the box I think it had like 13 or so.
You can install TWRP from Goo Manager and use that recovery to make a backup, format your internal storage, then restore data from a backup if you really think you're missing space, but honestly you probably arent.
Thank you for noticing that it was in the wrong forum Tekno.... And for getting that fixed. I understand I have less than advertised but before I rooted it, I backed up all the pictures onto my computer. My phone has no pictures or music on it so I'm trying to figure out where 10GBs have gone.
I will look up TWRP and hopefully that will help...

Well if you've already backed up that you may as well just backup your contacts and anything else you may need and start clean. And by that I mean do a full wipe before flashing a ROM and don't restore data after.

Well, I'm a little too late for all of that now. I soft bricked the phone. Using CWM, I managed to erase everything from the sdcard. All files, all folders, everything. Now when the phone boots it hangs at the "Samsung Galaxy S III" screen. I can, however, get into Download Mode and Recovery Mode. Unfortunately for me though, I do not have the stock ROM .tar and cannot download it due to workstation restrictions. I can also get to Recovery Mode but I have absolutely no files on the sdcard at all and I can't figure out a way to force push LiquidSmooth onto the phone. I receive recognition of connection via ODIN but that program only uses .tar/.gz/.img/etc. and I can't put the LiquidSmooth .zip on that way. Hopefully someone can bring me a copy of the Stock ROM in to work tomorrow as I'm on duty and won't be able to leave work for a while (days).
Oh, it's been a while since I've bricked a phone also. Those days I don't miss...
Are there any other options that I may not have exhausted?

Well heres a few things you can try:
1) ADB to push the rom to the phone
2) Use a proxy service to download original firmware (not sure if your workplace would like that though), Heres a link to the stock ATT firmware, not rooted, pure stock from sammobile http://www.hotfile.com/dl/182319352/b8d55a6/I747UCDLK3_I747ATTDLK3_ATT.zip.html
3) Ask to borrow a co-workers phone to download the file
Thanks Tekno. Finally back online...
