[Q] Cracked my screen - Premium Handset Protection (PHP)? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hi, I have the Assurant Premium Handset Protection (PHP), which was required when I got my S4. It apparently is covered, although it looks like a $175 deductible is in place. Anyone have PHP and have cracked their screens? Curious about the process.
Thanks!

Call 611 tell them u cracked your screen. Asurion will ask you when u last used your phone, ask you some identity verification questions snd charge your credit/debit card 175... I got a brand new phone still sealed... nb4 modem 4.3 firmware .....

When you get sorted purchased a Urban Armor Gear case and Tech Armor Ballistic Glass. Tempered glass costs $15, looks way better than regular screen protectors and will take the hit for your screen if you drop it.

Just got my replacement yesterday. ..next day service. They sent me a brand new sealed replacement, and I now have an extra charger, spare battery, and headphones. All I have to send back is the phone itself. I'm even keeping my extra back cover. Also had the 4.3 mk2 Knox bootloader...did the OTA update to 4.4.2/nb4 modem...haven't re-rooted yet.

They tried to tell me that PHP is required too but that was just a sales pitch. They make profit from selling that insurance. I'm using the warranty provided by my credit card and have a really low deductible of around $25. The next day replacement does sound like good service though.

I got a Note 3, which pretty much improves upon everything of the S4, but is really stretching the limits of how big a phone I can deal with. I never dropped the S4 or S2 out of my hand, but I feel like I'm on the verge of it a lot with the Note. So I ordered an S4 glass lens replacement and am going to attempt to fix it myself for cheap. If I succeed, I'll probably return the Note and stick with the S4, but I'll miss the Note a lot. Hopefully I can pull it off. If I fail, I've got the Note, which is otherwise incredible. So for $6 I may be back running with the S4 or I could sell it to offset the price of the Note.

Dropped my phone today!!

So my phone fell out of my hands today onto my hardwood floor and the screen shattered. Of course since it was my fault I had to file a claim with my favorite company of all time [/sarcasm], Asurion. Well I filed my claim and was informed that I will be receiving a refurb. Joy of joys.
Now, the question is, the screen is shattered but I'm fairly certain that download mode can still be accessed and I do believe my counter is at 1. Is that going to void my insurance? Does anyone know? If it does, I have 15 days to figure out how to get the counter reset. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance all!
insurance doesn't care if its rooted . You filed because its damaged. Insurance covers anything not covered in warranty.

I have GMG insurance and i believe if you request a brand new phone, you get one.
Oh thats good to know. UNfortunately here in the states Asurion only gives you what they want. So I have no hope of getting a brand new phone even if I request one. They'll just tell me to be happy with what I have an shut the hell up. I am glad to know that I'm safe even though I am rooted. Makes me feel a little better. My current SGS2 is a beast and seeing as others have had problems that I NEVER had with my GS2 I really hope the new one I get is just as good. I'm praying hard lol.

The only thing is the replacements are not AMOLED. They are LCD replacements. I've looked up the OEM version before and it'll cost you up to $500 for AMOLED.

@AllGamer: I thought about going that route. But I just feel like the phone would never be the same. Instead I'll pray that the QC Goblins at Asurion are good at what they do.
Maybe I'm just naive!
Our screen is that easy to break? I have the D30 case but i'm still concerned this could happen. Thought the screen was built with gorilla glass?
I think most people here hate cases including my self but I still wear one, this accidents always happen to everyone so why would people risk destroying a 550 dollar phone?
Dude that sucks! Gorilla glass even has a weakness. I've dropped mine once and got lucky but still left a nice little gash in the upper right corner.
That's what we have insurance for. I couldn't imagine not insuring this 500 dollar device.

This place lists as OEM, even if it is listed at LCD. OEM is OEM as far as I know. If it's not then it's false advertisement.
i can't say for sure, but a screen protector + a D3O case makes a pretty good formula
it saved my T989 twice on what would have been 2 fatal accidents
you can find both of my old topics in General
one was face down drop
the other was submerged in water
.../AG ***knocks on wood*** and hopes this doesn't jinx it the 3rd time
Gorilla Glass makes it more likely that the phone will shatter when dropped. Gorilla glass works because it hardens the screen to protect against scratches. The downside is the process that hardens the glass makes it cracking and shattering more likely
Hey OP. just wondering, how much did they charge you for the refurb replacement?

These ads are not written by tech people. It is physically impossible to fit an lcd screen and the needed digitizer into the same space as the amoled screen. It just won't work. They are thicker and need a back light, and that's just the panel. If it fits it is amoled. If it says Samsung on the back of the panel it is probably oem. I don't know if these are being counterfeited yet. It a very involved process to make the displays and probably not profitable to make fakes... at least ones that work.

Hey guys,
Sorry I didn't get back to the forums yesterday. 130 is correct. I just received the phone 10 minutes ago. Will update everyone on the quality soon. So far my only gripe is that they didn't cover the camera with lens tape. BUt I don't see any scratches.

Cracked my screen, what are my options?

Hoping to hear from people who have dealt with this before. Cracked my screen pretty badly but luckily (relatively...) it still works as far as i know. I don't have insurance and while I'm gonna deal with it for now I'd eventually like to get it replaced, fixed, or upgrade to a new phone. What are ballpark figures for cost considering my contract isn't up for another year and a half and i don't have insurance? What would you do if you were in my situation?

Ultimately i can't blame anything but my own carelessness. Long story short i accidentally crushed it between some heavy metal hinges on a forklift...the gorilla glass didn't stand a chance.

my advice: get it fixed
newalker91 said:
Sprint will not repair the screen, so that's not an option. Replacing the phone would be around $250 cheapest for a used device, $550 for a retail price device. Sending it in to a 3rd party repair company would cost you the $150 for the screen plus hourly labor, making it closer to $200. Factor in shipping cost and you may as well buy a phone.
Replacing the screen is easy. Undo the 6 philips head screws in the back housing, work a thin plastic wedge around the rim and pop the housing off. Undo the two screws on the board, unclip the ribbon cables, reverse the process onto the new screen. Takes about 15 minutes if you haven't done it before.

Sprint won't allow that. If that were the case everybody would be doing that.
If I were you I would buy dude's screen who is posted above this post and after that I would go on YouTube to see if I could find a video on how to assemble or replace the Epic touch's screen. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
If I helped you out in any way please thank me. Thanks.
If the Insurance was added the best you could do is process and insurance claim and get a refurbished phone for $100.
Changing out the screen is pretty simple. Just make sure you watch the camera connection at the top and the one at the bottom of the board. Every DIYer seems to miss those two.
It's very unfortunate that our assemblies cost so much, when the iphone assembly is like 40 bucks and to get it installed will run about 90 if you don't do it yourself. Our phone seriously needs cheaper replacement parts.

You can search on Craigslist and eBay for phones with bad esn. And simply make one working out of two.
You can ask on forums for people who bricked their phones beyond returning point and sprint refuses to help them.
But of the guy above gives you a good deal. Take it.

I ask because they replaced my cracked screen on my HTC EVO 4G a few months back, no questions asked, totally free.

Yes, I went in the day it happened and asked if they could replace it or what my options were. Other than buying a new phone for retail price, they said they couldn't do anything and didn't even do the repairs themselves. They just referred me to World of Wireless (I called them and they were charging $250 for the 'custom order' repair they'd have to do).
Buy a new one off Amazon for $8.00 and install it yourself. It take about a half hour and save a bunch of money

Yeah I cracked mine a few months back.
Tried this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1890708 to change the glass and ended up accidentally tearing off the digitizer and basically cooking it.
Sent it to Samsung, $180 and 8 days later they sent it back good as new. New glass, digitizer, screen AND bezel (had a slight crack in it). Definitely the route I'd recommend going.

That's pretty good deal when you must replace digitizer. All I see on ebay (at least fro Verizon phones) is $200 minimum. Here you will not only get this thing professionally replaced, but also not have to do it yourself, and end up paying less!!!
I wish I was aware of this option before I went about ordering digitizers on ebay, and to add insult to injury ended up ordering a wrong one
Get one with he home button on it. That means you will get one with the bezel which means much easier install. Just unscrew and replace. Ones without bezel are pretty tedious as you need your old bezel.

I'll be calling samsung tonight to get a quote but for my and future screen breaker's info please answer this:
On ebay you can see pics of the back of the assembly showing i535 or i710 or i9300
is there actually a difference in these? some sellers say that a i9300 lcd will only fit the i9300 not the i535 or i710
is this true or are they all misinformed? i'm sure samsung will say there's a difference but has anyone actually replaced their assembly with a different model?
UPDATE** when i talked to samsung i learned the answer to my question!
the LCD is the same across all platforms, glass too.
the frame however varies. i also read about someone using a different frame than what their carrier used, he had to mickey mouse the whole thing, said he couldnt use his home button, and to use the lock/ power button he had to roll up tape and shove it in... all in all the whole thing was rattley and far from factory.

[Q] Screen replacment

Hello, everyone I was just wondering if anyone knew why the galaxy s3 screen replacement is 5 times more than the iphone 4s screen. The s3 screen is around 230 on amazon and the iphone screen is only 40 some dollars. I was just wondering since I have replaced an iphone screen and it was pretty easy and cheap. So if I break my s3 screen its going to cost more to fix it than it is to get a new phone with my insurance. Unless someone knows where to get cheaper screens from. Thanks
My friend has an iphone fixing business and says it's almost impossible to get real oem screens and all the ones you see online are Chinese knockoffs.
40 is expensive btw for a Chinese one.
A real iphone screen is about 100 according to him though the 10 ones are just as good.
(though he buys in bulk from alibaba)

Replacing just the glass for the s3 should run you about $25 or so.

The digitizer is attached to the screen itself, isn't it? (I know that the iPhone 4/4S and 5 have the LCD, digitizer and screen all fused together)
Are there any reliable sources from where to buy SGH-i747(m) screens?

I just got my Galaxy Nexus (Verizon) replaced and am so glad I have Asurion insurance. Yeah it costs like $6 a month, but when I needed a new phone it came in really handy.
I set up a claim online (mine was lost/stolen but this could apply to yours too) and then paid $99 and got a replacement (probably a refurb) the next day. It was actually less than 24 hours from when I set up the claim online and when my phone arrived via UPS. That's pretty good service.
So if you would spend $60 on only a screen but have to do major surgery to install it, maybe it would be a better deal to pay $99 and get a whole new device.
Id really appreciate some tips on changing the glass on the GN. I have watched a few youtube clips on removing the frame/chassis/body but none on removing the glass.
Any tips or pointers on changing the glass would really help me incase i really screw it up!
The small bit of glass which fell out looks like it was held in by double sided tape. Is it a case i need a heat gun and just gently heat the glass and pull it off to replace it?
Thanks
N
My advice is buy the glass with digitizer already attached. I did the swap last month using glass+digitizer and it was very easy to do. I got it from this seller on ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/190766646656
Afaik the front glass is fused together to the digitizer making it very difficult to replace, a heat gun could be used but be careful. As a few other posters mentioned, buy the glass with the digitizer attached already. Much faster and easier repair. I will be doing it soon as I have purchased a cracked but otherwise working i-9250 nexus.

I must be damn lucky, accidentally yanked the usb cable while half asleep, fell flat onto the screen, looked at it after a few hours, it's like nothing have happened and there is only a small mark on my screen protector..
I replaced just the glass on mine. Its really not that difficult, just be patient with a blow dryer and slowly peel the glass off. I did it on my gnexus and on an S3. Its much cheaper and really not difficult. Just stuck the new glass on with existing adhesive that was there.
