I was just curious to know if someone else's phone is over heating. Yesterday I was watching a boxing match on youtube with 4G on and it reached to a scary 121°. 4 hours later I was playing the nova demo with the screen at 45% brightness, played for like 20 minutes or so and it reached 112°. Just whanted to figure out if this is normal that personallyI think is not, and also if someone else it's experiencing the same issue. Thanks

Mine can get much hotter than that but it pretty much hovers around the 120 range when I'm browsing the web.
I also get this message when charging and watching a video. I need to exchange it. Just need to find a Best Buy store that has one in stock.
What do you use to check the temp?
mine gets real hot as well.. I think it has to do with charging while using though.
Woow thats amazing. Im guessing that those temperatures can be harmful to the phone right?

It could be that and the stock charge pushed a lot of power in to charge quicker... But my input is that my phone hasnt even gotten very hot at all..

My phone was just laying in shotgun of my car with the car charger plugged in and the display on, then all of a sudden I picked it up and it was hella hot! 120° read SetCPU and I got shook, ripped the battery out and threw the phone in front of an AC but then I got worried that the extremities could possibly warp the board, so now Im thinking Im going to return my phone! In no way can this be good for the phone, I don't see how it can not get affect it when reaching 120, 130, 140 degrees!!! Im worried that in a week, a month, a year from now something will go terribly wrong and I really don't want to risk it, so I'm real close to returning this phone and just waiting for the Nexus!

Who mentioned anything about heavy usage and overclocking? CPU is 1.2Ghz stock buddy and I wasn't doing anything on my phone at the time it overheated...I have a Droid Incredible 2, and I run its CPU OC to 2.035Ghz and its never once gone over 105 degrees, so before you go getting all amazed, get your facts straight!

With the phone simply in my pocket, my leg would feel warm. I could grab the phone and the phone would feel quite hot. Not so hot that it would burn my ear, but warm enough that it would feel like there's some kind of problem. Usually, heat = battery getting drained. When I check to see if there's anything running, there's nothing...
Right now, have been listening to Spotify for over 2 hours, and it's cold as ambient temperature. Will try installing some monitoring program and report if I notice more heat issues. I know the Evo3D used to get "burns my ear" hot when using it as GPS while connected to the car charger. My guess was that if the screen is on, and there's power going to it, it'd always get hot. Maybe it wasn't supposed to and that was just my assumption. However, same thing happens to this one; watching netflix, or playing a game, or anything demanding, and if I'm plugged, it will get really hot, really fast. If not connected, it won't get as hot, but "normally" hot nonetheless.

That you know of, did they ever fix the issue on the Evo3D?
Let me put it another way. I don't see any process or feature that will cool down the phone when in moderate to heavy use. I expect it to get hot. I have always thought, how are they going to disperse the heat?

I don't know dude but what I do know is that I have the Incredible 2 overclocked to over 2Ghz!!! and my Xoom at 1.7Ghz and neither one of them has every gotten this hot before!!

Ill second this srongly, I think than anything over 107 with this technology is NOT friendly at all.

Mine got hot on day 1 from youtube and general setup but after a full nights charge it has been great for 2 full days, no heating up or anything weird.
But man did it get hot!
Edit: I turned off gps the night this happened. I have been using my phone alot and have not experienced this again.
You need a dose of Penicillin and Cortizone. The burning sensations should clear up. In the mean time, stay away from strange phones and turn off the vibration loop - LOL
Sorry, but I've done quite a bit with my phone (videos, NetFlix, etc...) and it doesn't get warm enough to burn.
An Intel CPU (i7, for example) can run at 200 degrees Fahreneheit. In fact, the roof is about 100 degrees Celsius. To protect the CPU, there are heatsinks, fans, water cooling, etc. Video cards can also go up to 70 degrees celsius before showing artifacts; some can do much better.
We're commenting a heat that is not nearly that much for a phone. IF the SOC gets to 100 degrees celsius, that's one thing; 100 degrees fahrenheit...that is the temperature in many places around here.
These SOC don't need such fans, heatsinks, etc, because they're not supposed to reach temps of 200 degrees. They should be self contained.
On my Evo3D, which I passed on to my father, I could smell like something was burning. It wasn't, but it smelled like if it were, around the battery. Yeah, it still gets hot when in use, and specially if connected.
I believe there's also comments that on all new phones, the first few charges, while the battery adapts, the phone may be hot. Of course it had been over 2 months on my Evo3D and it still gets hot.
The E4gT is doing better today, but I haven't thrown any video/games at it yet; nor has it been in my pocket.
I'd say give it a couple days. I know I've reported my own concern, and I'll be checking it to make sure the "hotness" is within reasonable limits.

I just bought a Samsung yesterday. Not sure if I can tell if it's warm or hot, but it does give quite a lot of heat. Specifically where it say's Samsung next to the camera and spreads of a bit to the screen and the back. Is that where the Exynos Octa 5420 is located? Anyone mind posting screenshots of how hot their CPU gets? I'd appreciate it so I can compare it with the temperature I get; I'll post my results soon. According to some search results on google though, people some people get that warm feeling.
My Samsung travel adapter that came with the product also heats up, but again, I'm not sure how hot is actually normal. Just a FYI, doesn't burn my fingers or melt the device, just's a bit uncomfortable touching near the very top.

Exchange it. Mine doesn't get hot at all.
I just noticed mine was getting warm near the camera as well before I read this post. I was watching HD YouTube videos full screen though. It's back to normal now.
I exchanged it and it's been a couple of days already; seems like the issue is universal when playing games or having high CPU usage.
Yeah it's normal...it happens to mine as well. As long as the device isn't burning hot, the heatsink is doing it's job. This thing is powerful enough to replace laptops so heat is to be expected.
Anyone know an app that shows CPU temp in a widget? The only app I can find that shows actual CPU temp is Trickster Mod. All the other apps I tried just show battery temp.
I ran AnTuTu benchmark to where it was almost done - 87% after the 3d test - then I looked in Trickster and saw 56 degrees, quickly dropping to 42 deg. The battery started at 30 deg and reached 34.2 during the benchmark and didn't really drop down to 30 degrees after that.
I am a little surprised that there is no CPU temp apps on the market, with fancy graphs and stuff. Come on, devs, we don't care about battery temp. Tap into that CPU sensor, dang it!

I was in my first meeting using my new Note 10.1 2014 edition and I noticed that it felt warm. I had the previous note 10.1 and never noticed it even getting warm. Is there an app that I use that will give me the temperature to post?

Be careful, I know someone who broke his Note by playing like for 3 hours to Real Racing 3. The Note was extremly hot and it died. Model was a Black LTE Snapdragon.

Was that a Note 3 that he broke? I was unaware the LTE Note 10.1 (2014) was released yet.
I just got that Real Racing 3 game and was going to play it. I will check my CPU temps after playing for awhile, though it's a little inaccurate since the CPU probably drops a couple degrees in the amount of time it takes to switch to Trickster Mod to check the CPU temp. I wish the FPS Meter screen overlay could show temps, kind of like EVGA Precision does for PC users, or I wish there was a CPU temp graphing application, or any app that keeps a min & max of CPU temp. Unfortunately, there isn't jack out there for CPU temp, but there are tons of apps that do stuff with your BATTERY temp. Who cares about battery?
UPDATE: I'm seeing 69°C and 70°C when playing games like Kingdom Rush & Real Racing 3. A tad on the warm side, but acceptable for me. I do have a case on the tablet, so that might make a little difference. It drops to 50° after about 10 seconds, then eventually down to 39°.
Compared it to my Galaxy S4, but I don't have those games on my S4 so I opened GTA3 & Block Story and checked the temps and saw 62°C. The Note probably gets a little hotter, but this test wasn't that long so take it with a grain of salt.
I've only used my phone for light stuff like browsing Twitter, Reddit, etc., but doing so causes my phone to noticeably warm up as if doing some heavy duty stuff, especially if on max brightness. It heats up faster/easier than my Nexus 5. Anybody else noticing this? I think I'm gonna go to T-mobile tomorrow and tell them, but I wanna make sure that I'm not tripping.
Mine got quite hot when I was downloading a lot of apps in a row. It gets warm on normal browsing but not hot.
Same here, updating apps from the play store, video watching etc. Wil cause the back side, at the middle section to heat up.

I've been having that issue also. Haven't really figured out. Just know when that happens, battery drains fast.. think it's an app eating up battery creating heat but haven't figured out which one...
I am having the exact same issue. I'm thinking about switching my phone through T-Mobile and going with the M9 because I'm not hearing of this issue at all on the M9.
Yea. I'm definitely getting lots of heat on my S6 Edge as well, especially while running multiple apps while updating Google play apps.

I was first told that all phones get hot if you use them while charging but then it has happened thrice now even when I am not charging it.
The heat is pretty bad right at the end of your right thumb..

Yep. I also have the s6 Edge, and the heat was pretty much unbearable. I was within my 14 day return, so I have the HTC M9 on the way. It was reported HTC fixed most of the over heating issues with the M9 before launch. I will see. This phone will more than likely be returned to T-Mobile if Samsung doesn't come out with a fix soon. I could see this becoming a huge issue after launch since this phone is made out of glass and metal.
I had the Xperia Z1s which had a glass front and back and the HTC M7 and M8 and they all felt hot after using them for a while, once you put a case on them it gets less noticeable. I just assumed it would be the exact same since the S6 uses both glass and aluminum. But yes it does get hot after a while lol.

Mine only gets hot if I'm charging while doing a lot of stuff on the phone. After the OTA I did a factory reset and it seemed to fix the "always hot" issue.
Heating up is a good thing. It means you have a good thermal path from the internals to the external metal chassis. If the device stayed cool to the touch while working it would mean the internals would be at much higher temperatures and throttling would kick in to prevent breaching SOA.
That said, it should not get so hot that you cannot hold it, like a hot potato!

I have a 64gb G6E running OCG.
Well i had an S6 for some days and then got the M9
I can easily say that the M9 is the same as the S6 if not cooler. It has already been proven that the S6's CPU reaches much higher temperatures than the M9 under a medium load
By the help of CPU-Z, it was detected that the S6 CPU reaches a whoping 66℃ if you just open the camera and take a pic
While in the M9, after a half an hour of Mortal Combat X, it reached 59℃
Mind you that these temperatures are CPU TEMPs not Battery/skin temps
S6 internal design is credited to be honest for putting the CPU away from the battery by a nice distance, so the battery doesn't heat up! When the CPU was 66℃ the battery was 31℃ !!!
But in the M9, the CPU is covering the battery, so when the CPU heats up, the battery heats up also. In the case when the CPU was 59℃ the battery was 45-44℃ which is considered to be warmer than the S6's 31℃
However the M9's metal casing helps in heat dissipation a LOT!! just leave the phone for a minute or two, and the phone will cool down very fast. It can cool down all over to 36℃ from 44℃ in three minutes!! Which means that throttling effect will be removed and you can enjoy your device's full potential again in the S6, if the phone heats up badly, the temperature is preserved as the glass is a bad thermal conductor. Also the phone might be very hot to touch in the upper right quadrant of the device in thr CPU side, while the M9 will feel warm all over the device.
So conclusion, the S6's 14 nm SoC heats up more than the M9's 20 nm SoC, but the skin temperature of the M9 is higher than the S6's but it is not annoying, and cools down very fast! If the S6 feels cooler, it is because the CPU is positioned far from the battery, not because it is built on a 14 nm process :laugh:
I got my phone a few days ago, and I'm somewhat dissapointed cause it always feels like it's running hot. I've never had this problem on my S7 edge. Just doing some browsing and its in the 94F range. Is this normal?
While it runs a little warm when charging, I've not noticed any excessive heat unless I'm doing something computationally intensive (Ex: transcoding video). But I know of one person that returned hers because of the heat. Have you checked to see if any applications are using excessive CPU cycles or are consuming the battery faster than others?

I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary. I'm barely using my phone to see if its gonna start to cool down but it's just consistenly in the 90F range with light use. I wanted to see how others experience are with their phones before I decide if I want to exchange it.

Depends on the ambient temperature, is that the temperature of the battery? If yes then it sounds ok to me.
You should download GSam and monitor the temperature. Since its made out of glass and metal, it will appear hotter to touch than a plastic phone.

when using wifi/4g in my house, i watched video, browsed fb and even shared internet and all. below i'll give my observations:
in wifi:
watching video, fb and browsing, whatsappin: the phone get very very slightly warm like not warm just the bit different from the phones usual temp like it hovers around 33-34.
when gaming in wifi it goes arounf 36-39 (NOVA 3) battery never crossed 31..
4g in my house, battery arounf 32-33, temperature around 37-39 for all.
but when i step out of my house, like when i'm operating my mobile in train/bus and the ambient temperature varies from say 28-32, my phone gets considerably hot and today, i was travelling in Bus and the ambient temp was around 35 and i was just browsing , watching videos and fb, my phone became hot like it even would have touched 43-46! i felt it hot to touch, is this norma(it's making me extremely paranoid)l!!??? if this is the case what happens if it's summer here, the phone would become blazingly hot, coz in summer ambient temp would be around 36-44 and all!!
Is this normala or am i unlucky for the second time ? I'm getting paranoid!

Are you serious.... When the ambient temp is 35 degree what else would you expect... Every phone on the planet will get that temperature. Can't believe you had a phone returned for this. You know the front of the device is black and absorbs light... When the sun hits your phone it's gonna heat up also. This phone is the best Android phone when it comes to thermal throttling.

With heavy multitasking, I hit 60+. Not regularly, but it has happened. The temperatures you're hitting are normal for me. I've had zero issues with the device. I have an OtterBox case, so I don't feel the heat as much. Honestly, I barely even notice heat at those temperatures. Considering the fact that the body of the device is aluminum, it's going to easily get hot to the touch.
Also, my One would almost always run between 45-70, and I've had that since launch. Used it heavily daily for years, and I still use it regularly as an app development device. No issues.
These devices have extremely powerful processors. They get hot. There's not an easy, efficient, way to cool a processor in a device like this yet, but they're designed for heavy use, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi first of all thanks for the reply.. I'll tell you what really made me paranoid.. Every evening I travel in bus and train and the ambient temperature would be from27-28_29.. I use 4g jio.. I just browsw/fb/insta.. In minutes my phone near the earpiece on the screen gets warmed up and it'd go around 40-41. Then I lock it it cools down fast but when I unlock it in seconds again starts warming up... My friend using same 4g in moto g4plus but his screen is cooler than mine... Please my one last doubt...
This is nothing lol. I live in Scotland so just now ambient temperature range from 5-13 °c and in my house 21-23°c and my Z3+ hits 60-70°c easily on heavy use. Benchmarked it one day and hit 90°c. The joys of the 810 chipset. Anyway away to upgrade to the OP3T so i should see and feel a massive difference.

Install a custom ROM and kernel and limit your background tasks. You may just have a bunch of things running using your CPU.

Hey all thank you guys very much for replying to my thread! i'm really feeling okay instead of getting paranoid with my phone.. although i'd be very happy if you guys just clear me this last doubt!
today I was playing NOVA 3 connected to wifi in an ambient temperature of 25C, 5-10mins into gaming, CPU reaCHED A MAX OF 41c and at around 20 it maintaining at 43 but jumping sometimes 45.. this is gaming, but i get the same temperature just browsing in knda same ambient temp while I'm travelling. and also browsing in wifi/4g(fb,insta,chrome) in my house in ambient 25-27 gets the phone phone to 35-37... and the rest of the pat of the mobile is cool, even the back side is normal, only the small portion between the earpiece..
why is this happening? is this normal(it'd be great if you guys clear this)? if yup y so? and why phones like oneplus x and moto g4 etc have relatively less temp than OP3..
I know it'd be irritating to answer kinda same question again, but this would my help paranoiac freaking out for my mobile will go down..

Hey all thank you guys very much for replying to my thread! i'm really feeling okay instead of getting paranoid with my phone.. although i'd be very happy if you guys just clear me this last doubt!
today I was playing NOVA 3 connected to wifi in an ambient temperature of 25C, 5-10mins into gaming, CPU reaCHED A MAX OF 41c and at around 20 it maintaining at 43 but jumping sometimes 45.. this is gaming, but i get the same temperature just browsing in knda same ambient temp while I'm travelling. and also browsing in wifi/4g(fb,insta,chrome) in my house in ambient 25-27 gets the phone phone to 35-37... and the rest of the pat of the mobile is cool, even the back side is normal, only the small portion between the earpiece..
why is this happening? is this normal(it'd be great if you guys clear this)? if yup y so? and why phones like oneplus x and moto g4 etc have relatively less temp than OP3..
I know it'd be irritating to answer kinda same question again, but this would my help paranoiac freaking out for my mobile will go down..

Because the Oneplus 3 is a lot faster, the Temps you are giving are n even close to hot... This has been one of the cooler phones so far.
Like others said, those temps are completely normal. Hell, I'd even expect them to be higher with your fairly high ambient temps.
About comparison with other phones - it all depends on internals and design. OP3 is made of aluminum so it'll dissipate more heat into the case - you'll feel it better. Other mentioned phones are plastic, so they'll contain more heat inside (you'll not feel so much heat, but the cpu may even run hotter).
And OP3 has cpu located just below the camera, so it's normal that it reaches top temps in that upper center part of the device.
P.S.: You talked about loads and ambient temps, but didn't mention screen brightness - that also plays a massive role in running temperatures.

for me mostly brightness bar will be in the middle... i never use it with high brightness..
Just get a case and maybe a screen protector so that you can't feel it getting hot.

You know the front of the device is black and absorbs light... When the sun hits your phone it's gonna heat up also. This phone is the best Android phone when it comes to thermal throttling.

hey ya !! sorry to disturb you again and again.. just a urios doubt.. what'd be the temperature of the phone or how hot can it gets, when u use 4g and fb app in ambient temperature of 29C and 33C..
mine got arounf 38-41 for the 1st cse and around 43 for the second case..
I know i'm being paranoid, ,but please, clearing tis would help stop worrying a bit
All the temps you posted are normal
About Moto g, it has much weaker SoC. A Ferrari's engine gets much more hotter than a toy car. Doesn't mean there is anything wrong with Ferrari
4G /3G active usage can get hotter than gaming. That's also normal

Nothing much to worry here. Even I use Jio all the time. My OP3 get a lot hotter than any other device I use before. Reasons I knew are these.
1. OP3 rock with a high end processor. Say SD 820. Other phones you mentioned are consisting of relatively lower end processor. So internally they might heat up more that OP3 while doing high processor intensive tasks, but the plastic casing keep the heat inside, as OP3 is made up of Aluminum that being a metal heats up so quickly and and u feel more hotter in hands than the other ones and also it cools faster.
2. AFAIK the processor is situated just below the Camera bump. Hence it heats up very quickly at that area. Irrespective of outside temperature.
3.While using 4G network it's obvious that the phonehave to communicate with the network at a very high rate than 2G or WiFi. So it's clear that it will heat up. Also using high processor intensive application like Facebook gives the processor high stress and it heats up in no time.
Remedies
1. Use a case. That somewhat helps in insulating the heat.
2.If possible use WiFi rather than 4G network. That will considerably helps your battery life.
Conclusion.
Don't worry about the warmth of the phone.Its normal. Just enjoy using the phone.

Clearly never experienced a SD810 device. I'm sure Snapdragon took there name too seriously with that chipset. I could hit HIGH 80°c in seconds playing basic games, using the camera and under heavy usage. Had to tailer my use around my Z3+ but now I have the 3T I can do what I want and it never goes past 50°c so far.
