[q] usb otg - Galaxy Note 3 Neo Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
This note 3 neo seems to be a good value for money...so I'm interested in...
I'm just wondering if the usb OTG is working well... I know it's usb2 and not 3...
I was so disappointed when I realized OTG doesn't work on S4 Mini I've bought to a friend of mine...

I can confirm this, not working with NTFS file system. Format drives as FAT32 only

So this feature is quasi-useless. How many people have drives still using FAT32?

Just use the Stickmount app by Chainfire and your ntfs drives should get detected fine

All you need is:
- OTG cable.
- Total Commander file manager (free)
- Paragon NTFS Plugin for Total Commander (free)
I put my old 250Gb IDE hard drive (formatted as NTFS) inside an USB enclosure and copied several files from the old drive to my Neo. I had to move the jumper on the HD from Master to Cable Select, though.

[Q] usb host?

I hear that honeycomb and ics support this function. So has anyone tried this out or does this version of ics have this functionality? I'm wondering if this device can read and explore external mass storage devices such as usb thumb drives or memory card readers and such. Would definitely be a deal breaker for me when I'm due for an upgrade.

yes, and you need a proper correct usb-OTG cable.
not all cable works.
Works great on bigxie v. 5, using stickmount to mount my usb key. Haven't tried mouse etc, just wanted storage to work.

OTG USB

Just bought a usb otg cable but the results are a bit of a let down:
- The main purpose of using it to play nova using ps3 command worked flawlessly, but the experience with storage hasn't been the best.
- Some Kingston stick work at first try while another Kingston stick doesn't work at all and the 1T wd passport drive isn't recognized (even with ntfs software in the phone)
What do you think? Can it be from the cable? Is it possible that is a matter of power drainage?

well, for harddrives, they NEED to be powered externally... if that helps.

make sure that your sticks and drives are in FAT32 otherwise some procedure have to be made, google up how to do it.
Me too, was disappointed with the OTG and the ability to use Generic Game Controller as ordered to play Dead Trigger, luckily it was just a $2 cable...
Almost everything could be set but the 'button to move the player' which should be set to the left analogue control, this game can't do it.
The problem is that the hard drive is USB charged. Can I add extra juice to the usb otg by using a splitter and add a charger to it?

you could try. do you have a powered USB hub? the S3 can't supply enough power to spin up a harddrive.

Can you hook up an external, usb powered HD for the Nexus 7 to read music from?

So I'm wondering if I can hook up my 2TB USB powered external HD to read music from the Nexus 7. Since there's no expandable slot for SD or mini SD, I want to be able to plug in my HD and have it read all my music.

I remember there being a microsd USB stick made for androids a while back, if you have the cords for it might as well hook it up and see what happens, won't do any harm

I had to use a powered USB hub to even get the device to recognize the drive. However I couldn't read anything. It may be because the drive is NTFS. Unfortunately all of my hard drives are formatted NTFS so I can't test for you.

I haven't tested, but with a USB OTG cable I can get it to read a USB stick so I would guess a HD would be the same type of thing
My old N7 would be fine with my usb powered external WD HDD, with the otg cable, don't see why it wouldn't this time as otg is still supported

So does it matter what USB otg adapter I get? And will still work without root? I won't root for a while'

Use a powered USB hub and plug the drive into that. If the drive is NTFS use USB OTG Helper and then reboot. You should then be able to access the files on the drive.
I don't even need a hub, the otg powers my external hdd

Anyone trying and getting external portable usb 3.0 based hard drive to work on N7 2013? Just wondering, mine won't do anything, no detection as in mounting.
My drive is WD passport 2tb silver.

Not sure if the nexus 7 could power an HDD, its worth a shot I guess. Have you considered uploading your entire library to Google? I've done it it works great!

As it's ntfs format, you'll need an app, like nexus media importer, to see the drive.

I'm using standard micro usb to usb otg cable and usb devices like mouse/kb, external hd and pendrives working fine.
Your pendrive dir should be in "/mnt/usb" folder.
If it's not there:
1. Your rom/kernel may not support usb-otg.
2. Your pendrive may need more power than your phone can give (unlikely).
3. Your pendrive has not supported partition type. Try format your pendrive to fat32.

External HHD

Has anyone tried to download and upload to an external HHD using a micro USB to usb ? Any type any size
I use my other cable with my 16 gig flash drive. I'm sure it will work with any size as long as it's fat 32.

External hdd
Hi.
Has anyone tried external hard drives, do you recognize?
Thank you!
OK so I got a micro USB to USB female and plugged in my 3gig external HD and it read as unsupported I the reformatted the drive to fat and it works well the only problem is you can't play back on your TV so now the question is how to get NTSF on my tablet?
