[Q] Does anyone use any of HTC's stock apps? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently converted back to Android with the M8 (went from OG Droid to iPhone 4S and now back again) and I'm just looking at the huge amount of apps HTC includes. Does anyone prefer the stock app to other Google Play options?
Also, would anyone recommend the HTC Backup? I looked at it, but I have no experience with it; I do know it's better than Verizon's "cloud" though!

If Google has an alternarive, I'll use it. They're a better software company.

Does it restore messages if you use a 3rd party SMS app? That actually sounds really useful...

Starting with Kitkat, message store is central and handled by the OS, not the individual apps ... thats why you can only have one single app for messaging enabled at any one time in 4.4

Wow seriously, that's fantastic! I guess I'll be using their backup then!

I'd recommend SMS backup and Restore. It's what i've been using since as long as I can remember.

[Q] Making the switch to Cyanogen for the first time - Few Questions

I'm just about to finally make the switch to Cyanogen after being on Sense ROMs ever since rooting. Not sure if I'm going to go with the latest alpha with wimax this weekend or wait a little longer for CM7. Before I do, I have a few questions.
1. When doing an app restore via titanium should I do an app restore only and not app+data?
2. When doing the app restore, can I do a batch restore of all of them or should I do them individually making sure I don't select any HTC apps? I'm worried that by restoring something like 'Weather' it will cause issues in cyanogen because it's an HTC app.
3. Is it best to use the built in multimedia apps in cyanogen over 3rd party apps or does it matter? For instance I have the paid version of Mixzing and love it. I'm assuming it will work without issues in cyanogen but worry that I'm missing some great cyanogen-only features by not using the built in music player.
Thanks in advance.
Welcome to CM. I made the switch for the first time a couple of weeks ago and haven't looked back.
I'm new to this myself but I'll tell you what I've learned. As far as titanium backup goes I usually install my apps separately just to be safe. I do just the apps and then the data. I haven't had an issue doing it this way. Your HTC apps will not work in a CM rom so I wouldn't suggest trying. That will cause issues. Your third party apps should work just fine. All of the ones I use work with no issues.
The guys in the official cm threads are great. They are normally willing to help just try to read through them first to see if your question may have been answered. Good luck man. If you need help just holla I'll help in anyway I can.

Great thanks. One thing though, how do you know which apps are HTC ones? Not all of them show up in the app title. The Weather one is a perfect example.

If you delete an app via titanium backup [which I use] most of the time when you delete it it'll show like htc blah blah blah.apk, so you can try that, or search for a list of stock htc apk files. I hope that helps.
Edit: Also, your Mixzing app will work, and you can have multiple music player apps, so you can experiment to see what you like. That also goes for other apps, like multiple theme viewers, browsers, ect.

Will it have Backup Assistant?

I have never owned a Nexus phone so please excuse me if this is a dumb question. I currently have a rooted Thunderbolt running CM7.1. My understanding is that Nexus phones don't have any of the bloat apps preinstalled. I don't need/want Verizon's Backup Assistant as I use Google for my contacts. Does anyone know if this phone will have Backup Assistant pre installed? If so, will we be able to remove it without rooting the phone? I would like to get this phone and not have to root it.
That's a good question. They didn't install backup assistant on the iPhone 4 or 4S and contacts are transfered via an app you have to download from the app store so they may do something simular. However they did manage to get their mobile hotspot app pre-installed on the iPhones so we'll have to wait and see.
But with 4.0 even if they put it on the phone it doesn't really matter:

in android we use an app called TI (Titanium Backup)
you can then backup to SD card, to internal storage, and to the cloud on DropBox

What he was referring to was a Verizon app that is solely used to transfer contacts from one CDMA phone to another since they cannot be saved to a SIM like GSM phones. It's pre-installed on nearly every VZW phone, however to anyone in the know, it's kind of useless if you're going from Android to Android since all Google contacts sync to whatever phone shortly after you sign in to your account during the setup phase.
Your gmail backs up your contacts, backup assistant is not needed.
Yes that's what I meant. I don't want the Backup Assisant app on the phone at all. Don't need it as I use Google (gmail) to back up my contacts. With the poor battery life I experienced on my HTC Incredible and Thunderbolt, I figure any unnecessary apps I can get rid of the better. Especially any that run/sync in the background.

Qreffie I did read the link you posted. Thanks so much, it was very helpful. I did not know ICS allowed us to remove apps until reading your link. I was agreeing with b15love when I reiterated that I simply don't need backup assistant. Thanks again for your replies. I'm excited for my first Nexus phone.

what does icloud do that android doesnt? from what I see, it stores your contacts on the cloud, Android does that.. it stores documents on the cloud, android does that many different ways but officially with google docs. Music is in the cloud (google music) It seems like every thing that the icloud does there are tons of android apps/services that do the same stuff.. Some officaly made by google, some by 3rd party.
I understand what your saying. The icloud backs up everything and if you have to reset your phone it sets it up exactly how u had it. Like titanium backup would but u need root for that.

Actually if you had an HTC phone that was done for you. I was a little shock when I noticed my apps and background did not load up when I put my email address in. Coming from the OG Evo that is 1 thing I do miss. I would flash a new rom put my email address in and voila my apps and setup came back
iCloud isnt all that great. The contacts sync messes with your contacts picture sizes on incoming calls and the photostream doesnt have an official site to view the photos. Everything else is easily dont through google. The backup features nice but thats about all I use.
the advantage of the icloud that I'd like to see with android is making a change in one place its updated on all of your devices.

I had an Evo and it most certainly did not do that, nor did my Evo3D....in fact I'm pretty sure that's one thing Sense just never did. Now, when I installed Cyanogen (or anything else close to vanilla Android) I was blown away when I wiped and booted up and decided "screw it, I'll set it up again later" and came back to a nearly identical phone.
...also when I had my Evo4G when I would change my background on my phone it would change it on my Nook Color (both with CM7). I never quite figured out how or why that happened, but, I did rather like it.
In ICS Google has resolved the issues with your settings and apps being restored when you refresh your phone. It works in CM7 and in Honeycomb from my experience - but not consistently.

Using native sms app with Google Voice

Anyone know how to use the native messaging app through google voice? I know there is an option within the app but it uses different phone numbers for the incoming so when you respond it will know you its going to.
What I am looking for is something that will full integrate, using my contacts phone numbers when they message me. Also when i start a thread from within the messaging app i want it to go through google voice. I found this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mdrtools.apps.gvintegration&hl=en
But is that the only way to make it happen? Thanks!

Same.. I used to use that all the time but now I'm on an unlimited plan.
If you're rooted, I've found that this app works perfectly for me on the Nexus:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...vintegration.free&feature=more_from_developer
Disclaimer: I've got the paid version. This is the free one and I don't know what the difference is haha.

I just loaded the free one, cant tell the difference between the paid and the free. This app got a lot of bad reviews so i was skeptical... seems to be working ok. How is your battery life with it?
Also I am on an unlimited plan as well, i just want to start giving out my GV number and not my regular number anymore... Time for a change
I haven't had any trouble with battery life. There was an older version of the app that sucked down battery, but since it's been updated I haven't noticed any appreciable decrease.
The free version is apparently a trial version.

[Q] HTC Apps?

Can you install the HTC Apps from Google Play?
Then disable the Google apps like: Calculator, Calendar, Chrome, Photos, etc?
And one more question, are the dialer/phonebook, messages, music, notes (Scribble), voice recorder and tasks google or HTC apps? (I hope HTC)
Anyway, if it doesnt. If you extract the apps from any M9 rom (maybe deodexed), could you install the .apk files?
Also, does it have the grid view on Recent Apps? (Please say yes)
I would like to know if this is possible as well. I prefered htc apps over Google...
From what I have seen and read you can do this yes.
Yes, this is possible.
My mind is a little blown that some people have these preferences, but yes, you can.

People have different tastes.
Like some people prefer Touchwiz/Xperia/Optimus/Miui/etc over AOSP, because each of these skins add something new that appeal to a certain group of people.
The big advanatge of HTC apps is that they are not completly linked to all the damn google stuff. I want to use the playstore for apps, but the other stuff is mostly an invasion of privacy...

Well, I mostly prefer Google apps, but the HTC Music player is awesome, so yeah that's the first app I'll be installing when the 10 hit UK market
HTC uploaded Boost+ on Google Play.
Guess what was in one of the screenshots.
Sense 8 apps.
See for yourselves.

Who's the say that isn't from an M8 or M9?
Anyway I believe if HTC makes it available you can get it from the Play store. If not then you may have to sideload it and hope it works.

Most HTC apps can be downloaded from the Play Store on the 10. However, one that is not compatible with the 10 is the HTC gallery app.

Is there a work around for this yet? I hate using Google photos...
Tried extracting the Gallery.apk from a M9 rom but it kept force closing.
I don't mind Google Photos as an app to create and save my pictures, but it's absolutely not ready to be integrated into the camera app. It takes way too long after taking a photo to review and edit. And forget taking a burst of photos, you have to wait literally a minute or more to see them.

3 choices:
-you could use Team Fulmics's ported apps
-you could download ICE ROM for M8 and extract some themed Sense 8 apps (but low chance for them to work... Althrough they are running on a Sense 8 rom)
-there was some thread on XDA where somebody actually ported some apps especially for the HTC 10
Imo, you should the second idea, because the Sense 7 apps would not quite fit with Sense 8, so better try some themes ones first.
If they dont work, just try the other things.

Because of the status bar. Is the stock google one.
HTC One M9/M8 doensnt have that.
So... I think HTC has made new apps, but they are not releasing them for some reason. :/
I can deal with almost all of the changes that they've made but I'll tell you the one app that I'm really missing is the HTC music player. I found the APK file online but every time I install it the app force closes
I don't particularly care for the Google photos app because what it would like to do is upload all of the photos from my phone to my Google account and I don't necessarily want that to happen. I actually hate the way Google handles most of their data collection. So I've made it a habit of mine ever since I started using android to go into the sink settings and turn off everything except for my Gmail.
I'm pretty comfortable with the way things are now
I have slowly gotten used to the Photos app from Google...
I did try to side-load HTC Music Player, but it keeps crashing on me... if anyone has a stable version, please let me know. Google play subscription isn't available where I live, so casting is disabled and I can't use my wireless speaker system...
Good grief, can't use the HTC Music Player app and can't edit the quick settings so there's a huge amount of pap in there at the moment. No interest in using Google photos or most other Google apps, seems to me like HTC has sold a bit of its soul to Google and left out some of its good apps like the gallery. If i wanted a stock launcher and all that Google crud I'd buy a Nexus device.
Strange, HTC Music player crashes but not Htc Music widget.
