I have my S3 all clean and sexy.
I'm looking for a way to Root my SGH-I999 (correct me if im wrong), and i have a macbook pro. Sorry for mentioning that, i know i should be stoned to death for even mentioning that.
I have seen a few different tutorials on rooting the S3 for windows, and even one or two for MacOSX. But i wanted to be sure that this would work for my T-Mobile variant as well as the international versions that are shown in the video.
Could i use the international version's tutorial?
If not, where could i find a good place to root my device?

You could use boot camp/parallels on your mac for windows, and root your device that way. After rooting, be sure NOT to install ROMs that are not compatible with your device variant; doing so will result in a bricked phone.

hey guys im new 2 android community... ive a galaxy note 2 GT-N7100 International version bought in India. Yes, rooting it voids your warranty. But you can flash back a stock ROM and unroot if you need to take your phone in for service.
All modifications have risks. Though rooting probably won't break your phone, an user error on your part just might, or malicious code might. You can never know that! You have to be careful and use your best judgment. Rooting is basically like logging in to a computer with an administrator account, you can change all the system settings and as a result you can really screw up your system if you are not careful.
I'm just saying all that to clarify that if you do root your device and mod it, have an accident and screw something up, it's your own fault. You need to always keep that in mind.
When you download the toolkit, the first thing you need to do is:
1) EFS backup
2) Full Nandroid backup
Do those two things first, then do whatever you want. If you have EFS and Nandroid backups you have a safety net in case something goes wrong later on.
Also: read, read, read. Read every single Note II guide and FAQ you can find here on XDA.

I am just looking around and I see loads of stuff about rooting, I came from Apple iPhones coz they are **** now lol and i have jailbroken all my devices. Had my note 2 for few months now but I am worried if i root it I will loose my warranty and might mess up my phone....
I seen the tutorials and it looks really easy but lets say down the line I want to un-root my device, could I leave no trace of the device being rooted?
I had to replace my old note 2 and it was rooted i managed to un root it but the benefit was that I work in the phone shop and I replaced it.
SHOULD I ROOT THE DEVICE?
WHAT BENEFITS WILL I GET?

Even without root, the Note 2 is still beast.
But with all these customizations, tweaks, improvement going on in the development threads, it's a GO.
Plus, you can unroot easily anytime you have a computer.

Well here's what! Rooting your device is basically allowing your phone to run apps and do special operations that it cannot normally do and also flash custom roms. If anyone else can help with a reply that will be awesome. Well it's upto you. You'd get a HELL lot more of options with a rooted devices than unrooted. Personally, I find absolutely no reason not to root, and it would be such a waste to not unlock the full potential of this beast. It's an awesome device as it is, but it's even awesome-er when your root

It's easy to remove all evidence of rooting if you ever need to. Still I don't think you should rush into it if your uncertain. There are benefits I've gained from rooting though nothing I couldn't live without. To some extent I've been rooting for so long it's just a habit now, I'm just used to having it, but even if I didn't have it on this phone I'd be happy with it.

If you know valid reason to root your device then root it, don't rush for fun or experiments. when you find some stuffs needs root that is must for you then go and root, but read couple of times before it.

Me neither. However it's a fact that a small number of units shipped will develop a fault. If you're going to put big money into a phone line the Note 2 then it's not unnatural to want assurance that you are going to have protection if you are one of the unlucky ones.

Warranty is always a question of time.
The advantage of rooting is difficult to explain to everyone who is doubting about that.
For me rooting is something that should not be necessary.
There are many users that will never use root access even when it is available.
But there are thoughts that root access will lead to problems or misuse.
For me root access is usefull in some cases. For example to install Whatsapp on tablets with wifi-only.
Not a question of advantages and disadvantages of Root OR how it is helpful
I mean to say You can claim warranty even you have device rooted with flash counter 0.
2 main reasons for me :
- Blocking ads
- backing up my entire phone.
You can't do that without root.
Now that my phone is rooted i've done other changes like installing the aosp camera to use photosphere and CWM to backup and install zip easier.
But I keep stock rom with stock kernel, with this phone there is no need to change it to my mind.
With root you can put any tiers application in the multi windows right?
You can also disable bloatware or freeze them with greenify.
The only thing is missing with is the undervolt settings. That's why I'm already in custom kernel/ROM.
But when 4.2.2 goes out I'll certainly go back stock ROM which i hope, will increase battery life.

Not in the good ole United States of America (but there is more too this?)
If you purchase a Samsung Galaxy Note II (or any other phone) from a Authorized Dealer, it comes with one year warranty and guarteneed warranty per terms of that dealers contract. If you unlock/root/flash, whatever, you break that contract because of something YOU did, not the Authorized Dealer, therefore, they are not responsible for it, YOU are.
Now, as someone that has unlocked/rooted/flashed MANY phones over the years, every set of instructions I have every read.....1. Explains the above first. 2. Immediately explains to read ALL the instructions first and understand them before you attempt anything. 3. Explains THEY are not responsible if you brick your phone. 4. They always give detailed instructions (or link to them) a. How to put it back to stock and b. Lastly, DO NOT TAKE PHONE BACK TO DEALER ROOTED!!!
Now, with that said, I (we) in America have T.E.P. (Total Equiptment Protection) that I pay $11.00USD a month. This insurance is in case I lose my phone, its stolen, I drop in bathtub, run over with car.............I pay a deductible ($150.00USD I think) and they give me a new phone.
Now, these are two different things. During the initial warranty period, If I have SDS, I take it back to Authorized Dealer, fix my s**t! After Warranty, period, I send it back to insurance company, pay deductible, and either they send you a new one OR send you a agreed upon compatable device!

For me rooting was a must for directory bind. As has been said blocking ads is essential greenify good and the increase Volume mod was also a god send.
However on the downside I've lost sky go.
I rooted my Samsung day 2 and wouldn't turn back. Iv undervolted getting 2 days out of my battery. Root is awesome.

New to this site and the world of android modding and just bought myself a new S4 Mini from my cell carrier (FIDO). Im pretty tech savvy when it comes to computers and whatnot but i figured id do some research into it and found this site
Ive been reading on the forums and whatnot about rooting this phone but all i can seem to find are guides on the older GT-I9195 and 9190 moddels.
So i guess what my question is (and forgive me if its been asked a trillion times but im newb) is that is it possible to root this phone ,SGH-1257M, and still retain the same model number and all the features that comes with the phone ? and if so is there a CLEAR guide to doing so, i have cookies ;P (from what ive read it gets put as a GT-I9195 or 9190 and thats not what im looking for).
Im not worried about voiding my KNOX warranty as i have a plan with FIDO that offers replacement phones with no questions asked (water dmg etc) so if need be ill mess up the phone before i replace it.
Ive tried once using this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470173&page=7 from the guys suggestion at the bottom but once its done i keep getting TONS of KNOX notifications stating something is trying to access the system and its prevented it. Plus when i use root checker it says it has failed.
Im assuming this means try again but im just asking to be sure before i continue to flash my device lol. I have the stock rom for my device downloaded from Sammobile so if need be i can restore it to stock again (ive done that already once using odin) and start over.

I am complete noob on rooting, flashing, etc. I am hoping that someone will post instructions for SGH-I257M in detail, that a technically competent but noob to this process can follow. As it is now you have to go to a few different places, gather and analyze the procedures, understand as best you can, and take your chances.
If you do this please post your results, in detail.
The SGH-I257M is a Canadian model. I am in London ON. Are you nearby?

Hey man thanks for the reply. I have managed to root the phone successfully using the I9195 Method (For LTE) without flashing the kernel over (and therefore changing the phone model to I9195) and kept my sgh-i257m model number. Pretty sweet!
The only issue im having now is HORRIBLE battery drain occuring (I can literally watch it go down when im using the phone):victory:. I know flashing the I9195 kernel should in theory fix this but im afraid that if I do that ill never be able to get back to the sgh I257m model even if I have the stock rom (they are on sammobile).
If someone can confirm that I can indeed flash back to sgh model then ill gladly loose the features for better batter life! Otherwise I might just stick with an unrooted device for now and see if anything comes up soon
Possibly Figured It OUT!!!!
Ok so after a few days of playing around and reading a TON i think i have successfully figured out how to root the s4 mini SGH-i257m model and still retain that model number.
The steps are quite simple as you just follow the GT-i9195 rooting guide to the letter which can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2364980.
After rooting using this method you will indeed trip the KNOX flag so be sure to be aware of that BEFORE you continue.
Once I did that and checked with root checker app i was beyond excited. But pretty much right away I was plagued with battery drain issues from hell (i could watch it drain a % a minute at some points) but i was VERY wary about flashin the GT-i9195 kernel because i still wanted all the features my phone model added (i know im a stickler). But after only using my phone for 5 hrs total (most of it standby time in school) and having only 8 % left i could not deal
So i flashed the gt-i9195 kernel onto my phone, reboot and expected my phone to say gt-i9195 model but its still SGH-i257m!!!
So basically just follow the GT-i9195 root instructions and your good to go as far as i know. Even the battery issues seem to have disapeared
hope this helps out any other Canadian s4 Mini owners out there, as i know this was frustrating for me in the beginning.

I would like to know how to recover my phone in case of soft bricking and all possible circumstances of rooting my phone. I read the dr.ketan 4.3 android guide and it seemed over-simplified? Is it really that easy or is someone expected to have some knowledge before following the guide?
Rooting is more like the access to system files and that's it..
It would be good if you install TWRP or Philz recovery which will allow you to backup and/or install new ROMs and such..
Some apps require root access to do their jobs however some apps might use it to steal from your phone or just break it so you need to be careful about that.

In general it's easy. Although gone are the days of limited security to overcome and the ability to hide (for warranty purposes) the more serious custom activity. AFAIK rooting is still simple enough and fully reversible.
The things to be cautious with are odin and anything related to bootloader changes.
The things to be aware of are that flashing custom roms will very, very often require a full data wipe - so too do the troubleshooting guides if anything goes wrong.
I recommend you should make sure you have a good copy (md5 checked) fully stock rom matching your current one. And a working copy of odin installed and check you can connect to it properly (just don't flash anything!) This is often your "if all elses fails" tool.
Read twice, double check your files, and trust no one person unless they're recognised.

just follow their steps clearly and don't try anything w/o any expert advise??
Search for root note 2, you can find tons of video guide. Spend some time to view it then you couldn't have done it wrong
