Using 4.4.2 CM11 nightlies, Philz Touch
My compass acts oddly when my phone is in landscape orientation. It works fine in portrait orientation. If my phone is flat on a table (i.e., the screen is facing directly up), it's fine. As I rotate the phone vertically (with the power button facing away from me), it works up until the phone is about at a 45° angle from horizontal. Then the compass can sweep though an angle of about 180°. I see this behavior in GPS Status & Tools and with the blue arrow in Google Maps.
In portrait, everything is fine. I prefer to have my phone mounted in landscape when I'm in the car. This is when I need my directions to be correct, and this is precisely when they are not.
It seems that there's nothing telling the compass that the phone is in landscape orientation. I don't know if this is a hardware problem or an issue with CM11.
However, Google Sky works when the phone is in EITHER orientation. I have no way to explain that.
I cannot find anything or anybody else describing the same issue or any way to resolve it.

I have a problem with auto rotation. Somewhere between rooting (S off, eng S-off and super CID) and installing a CyanogenMod 6.1.3 I got a problem with a rotation on my DHD. If i enable auto rotate my phone goes in landscape in every single app (Messages, camera, menu...) and it's not coming back to portrait when I rotate the phone. If I disable it everything is in portrait even camera and gallery.
I have installed a sensor test 1.0 by Qualigon and I can see that in Orientation sensor, when I rotate the phone, only X is changing, Y=0 and Z=0 all the time.
I have tried calibration and nothing happened. It's the same.
Help please

Try clearing caches and fixing permissions in Clockwork recovery.

I didn't see any followup on this reply. I am having what seems to be a similar problem with the auto rotation. When I start an application it will correctly present either in portrait or landscape.
When I start the application in portrait and then switch the phone to landscape, the screen's rotation will correctly switch to landscape - but switching it back to portrait will not change the screen's rotation.
When I start the application in landscape it will remain in landscape regardless of the phone's orientation. The only way to get to portrait is to close the application, and then restart the application when the phone is in portrait mode.
I installed an application to test the sensor. When holding the phone in portrait vertically, the values I am getting are: ~230, ~0, ~1. When holding in landscape vertically, the values I am getting are: ~120, ~33, ~33.
The wrong rotation behavior happens in all applications. I switched two ROMs already (Cognition 1.5.2 and MIUI) and nothing changed. I am pretty sure the problem is SW related because as I wrote the initial presentation is correct (meaning the initial orientation that I will get when starting an application is always correct).
I would appreciate help.

Same problem but all my sensors show pass via *#0*# sensor checks. Tried nordic i9505 I9505XXUFNB9_I9505NEEFNB2_I9505XXUFNB9_HOME.tar 4.4.2, then SIngapore I9505XXUFNBE_I9505OLBFNB3_I9505XXUFNBE_HOME.tar 4.4.2 all the fken same problem. Screen rotation all fine when I flash firmware, root, then flash CWM touch - everything good. Screen rotate works until the first reboot after all of this which might even be a day or 2 later. As soon as reboot phone, screen rotation dies and it is a huge pain in the arse. Sensors continue to say pass via *#0*#. Every few days i have to re-flash firmware, re-root, then re-CWM touch, no need to factory reset just those 3 steps. Has anyone got any solutions for this yet??

So I got my SGS2 a few weeks back and the phone just didn't like to auto rotate. No big deal because I actually had it turned off with my T-Mobile Vibrant most of the time. However, unlike my Vibrant, the SGS2 would rotate into landscape and never reurn to portrait. The calibration function did not work. Scratching my head, I researched and found out that my accelerometer was faulty.
Diagnosis: *#0*# and tap sensor then look at the accelerometer values. My "y" value was indicating 0 (zero) which meant it does not function. Apparently I am not the only SGS2 owner with this problem so I thought I would fire a post on here just in case soeone else runs into this issue.
Solution: Get a new phone! T-Mobile was nice about it since I'm within the 30 day buyers remorse.

i use my phone on auto and it switches instantly between landscape to vertical and back depending how i hold my phone

Ok I turned off auto rotation. its VERY annoying when I am lying in bed browsing and the stinking think keeps rotating the screen.
problem is now "I CAN'T" rotate when I need to.
core problem is pictures. it keeps rotating my pictures.
so its displaying pictures 90' off axis. the only pictures it does not rotate are ones I shoot in portrait. those the picture axis remains inline with the screen axis.
but if I shoot a landscape picture (phone on its side) it DISPLAYS it rotated in PORTRAIT orientation (ie using 1/3 the screen) instead of LEAVING IT the same axis as the screen not the phone.
since I don't have auto rotation turned on .... I can't "rotate" the picture by tilting the phone again.
is there a way to STOP the camera auto rotating or adding rotation info to exif ie anyway to force ALL pics to rotate to the same axis as the screen (long side to long side)
OR is there a way for me to FINE TUNE auto rotation so its not so stinking sensitive? IE make it so I have to tilt A LOT FURTHER before it "rotates" and then I could turn auto rotation back on ???
Install smart rotator
Turn on rotation
Go into the app and turn everything to auto rotate
Than turn off everything you don't want to rotate
This order works best...if you did the opposite you will have some issues with the camera at least thats what I found.
NOTE: This will not fix the home screen issue.
Installed the app so far working very well. thank you for the suggestion. I wish I could justchange the angle that triggers the shift.

It seems my phone need compass calibration (rotating phone in 3 axles) pretty much every time I open any application that uses compass.
In google maps for example the arrow never points to the correct direction, no matter how much I rotate the phone. In fact the compass doesn't work for a while in any app, it takes quiet a few seconds or even minutes before it shows some life, usually it starts working after gps lock, but even then it can be off by 180 degree...
In GPS Status app it's very noticeable. I can place the phone on a table and start rotating it, the compass stays still or jumps all over the screen, depends on the phones angle. Then when left alone the compass arrow constantly moves.
Anyone else have this issue?
Yes, I have the same problem. Very unreliable in TW ROMs, and isn't working at all in CM11.
Mine works fine, it does need calibration once in a while, but once I do that it stays good. Can't say how it works with maps since I always use North up, I get too confused if the map rotates according to my movement. Do you use s-view or any type of magnetic mount etc? That could affect compass and require frequent calibration, I think.

In almost all apps, rotating from portrait to landscape or landscape to portrait has a very long delay. Usually at least 10 seconds, and sometimes not at all unless I tap the phone on a hard surface, and then it rotates.
That might suggest a sensor problem, except for 2 things that do work:
1) In camera mode, the buttons rotate instantly when I rotate the phone
2) In GPS status, which indicates phone orientation, it registers the screen rotation as roll in the pitch/roll display, although the GPS status screen does not rotate correctly either.
These seem to confirm that the actual sensor is working ok.
I've tried safe mode, clearing cache, closing all open apps. Nothing changes in the behavior. I also tried turning off SmartStay, and changing display mode.
Some hits I found suggested turning off "smart screen rotation" on the S5, but that setting doesn't seem to exist on the Note 4.
Has anyone had this problem and found a solution?

This is like a dead giveaway for a hardware problem.
Wow, 10 seconds is a looooonnnggg time for a screen rotation. I've never experienced this on my Note 4, so the only thing I can think of is talking to your carrier or Samsung themselves to ask about it. Sounds like a hardware failure to me.
Yeah, that does make it seem like a hardware problem. But like I said, the camera buttons rotate instantly every single time, with zero lag. That would seem to say the hardware is working, unless the camera uses a different sensor for rotation than the rest of the UI.
Also, my wife has the same issue with her Note 4. We got them at the same time, so maybe it's a problem with that batch.
Since we both have it, it seemed like it could be caused by some app we both have, but I thought booting in Safe Mode would eliminate that, as only stock apps run in Safe Mode.
I guess I could wipe the device completely and see if it resolves. If not, I'll take it in as a hardware problem.
After a full wipe and cache clear, it still has the same problem. I called Verizon, and they are shipping out a replacement phone.
