I am experiencing weird bug. Connecting to DVI monitor through adapter direct forces 640x480. Through AV receiver black screen at all, only audio works. I guess my monitor or adapter is the reason, however this setup works well with raspberry pi (1280x1024).
Does anybody using HDMI to DVI adapters to connect Fire Tv? Is there any way to force resolution? Changing through gui is disabled for me.

I'm having a similar problem. My TV is old and doesn't have an HDMI port, so I'm using an HDMI to DVI adapter as I did with my Pi. My screen goes black right after "Checking for Updates"
This is apparently an HDCP issue, which I don't know much about. My TV's DVI port is supposed to be HDCP compatible. There are "active" adapters that can fool the Fire TV and make it work, apparently, but I'm trying to get it working without having to spend another $30 on another stupid adapter.
It's a very disappointing bug, I guess. When I connecting it through receiver my monitor shows 1280x720 but screen is always black. However rarely I can catch flickering with signal. It means monitor support this (720p) resolution. On direct connection it works, but at 640x480 and not allow to change resolution. I thinking about buying optical audio cable to connect it to receiver directly but it's about 30$ and resolutions is so odd. I hope this will be fixed with new OTA. So if anyone is thinking about to buy Fire TV to use with DVI monitor, right now it looks like a bad idea. I'd rather bought something other if know that.

I got my TOSLINK cable for about $5 (with Prime shipping) from Amazon, and a TOSLINK to stereo RCA converter from eBay for $13.
When you get the black screen, if you unplug the HDMI and plug it back in with the right timing (fairly quickly but not too quickly) you can kind of make it work. It looks like crap but the menus are navigable. The first time, I had colorful static with the clear picture flashing through every 5 seconds or so. I reseated the HDMI cable again a few more times and it came up clear (except for the terrible resolution).
Thank, I will check for cheaper dealer. The price I've talking about is for belkin cable. As for you hack thanks for information may be it will be helpful for someone. Behaviour you describing stopped for me after first OTA. Right now I always get crap resolution on direct connection without flickering. But before update it flickers continuously too. I hope next OTA will fix it. May be drop a line to amazon is make sense?

Finally I've bought a cheap TOSLINK cable, and was really disappointed to find it almost quiet. For an hour trying to switch different modes on Fire TV and AV receiver. My last hope was factory reset and it helps, so, I'm with sound right now it's much better, but still on a crap resolution. I hope Amazon will fit it, I believe hardware is ok.
Sound works for a day and again disappeared. I think for some reason device forced routing it to HDMI. I've just leave it along for a day and after woke up uncovered no sound. However receiver show, that signal is ok, if not it is blinking. But signal is silence. I started to think about selling this piece of crap.
I found some info about this bug. It's a well known android problem.
Some sources mention it was fixed since 3.8 kernel issued.
Current firmware incorporates 3.4. I hope next update will fix this.

Any updates on the situation? I was hoping to temporarily connect my Fire TV to a monitor that also only has DVI input. I do have an HDMI-DVI-cable but it's going to be another two weeks unti the actual Fire TV is released here in Germany.

The last version I've checked was second update which not affects root. And problem still present. However with low resolution it works, I believe this is a kind of safe mode. Currently my monitor is burned out, so no news.

Well, finally, I've checked this DVI-HDMI adapter with brand new monitor and got the same results. Possibly it's an adapter issue. However Raspberry Pi works well through it, but Fire TV only in safe mode on two different displays.

Not sure for android, I'm playing with Fedora on this devise, but not yet checked through this adapter connecting directly to new display. Will check with adapter this weekends.

Did anyone manage to work out a solution?
I'm having a similar issue with an hdmi to dvi adapter - works fine if hooking up to a monitor via hdmi, but if using the adapter it only outputs 480p - and says the monitor doesn't support higher resolutions. I'd love to be able to use the AFTV with an older, larger DVI-only monitor that I have.

I got the Cable Matters MHL to HDMI adapter (no links- under 8 posts) from Amazon. Perfectly inexpensive, quality is alright. I use my existing adapter heavily; multiple emulators, Sixaxis Control Utility, and along with a keyboard and mouse I use it like a second desktop. However, sometimes video output ceases for a few seconds, giving a black screen on whatever you're outputting to. The video output on the phone is unaffected. Apparently this is a common issue for this adapter. While it's not deal breaking (it still works fine and only cuts out for two to three seconds every five to twenty minutes), I want to know if the official adapter has this issue as well. While it's twice as expensive, I may put down the money sometime down the road to replace the one I've got.
What do you have, how well does it work?

I've played FF7 via FPSe piped to my TV using the OEM Samsung MHL adapter for about 2 hours straight and never noticed any issues. Works great. And I got it for $16 off eBay shipping included.

Sounds like an idea. I use mine for FPSE as well. And N64oid. Spent about an hour playing Super Smash Brothers before work today. Only cut out about three times during that run, lol.
In my experience the cutting is interference from the phones antenna , tried it in airplane mode? WiFi doesnt interfere.

Have not tried airplane mode. Mostly, this is because I often use it as a desktop computer. Actually does the job fairly well. 19" flatscreen TV, BT keyboard and mouse, web browsing becomes a much more pleasant experience.
Mozilla needs to get off their asses and add an option to change the text size though. Dolphin works great but doesn't agree with some sites.
Indeed, that type of use shows the awesomeness of this device, i sometimes use Ubuntu, there's a nice package posted somewhere here, Firefox, GIMP etc on a cellphone is amazing. But enough of that ot, if airplane mode doesn't give you those cuts then when reconnected to cells try to position the cable in a way that it wont catch so much interference, i connect it to a 27" tv/monitor/tuner/almost coffee maker combo, and depending on positioning i can catch the moment when i'm going to loose signal by the tv's speakers catching the interference. Maybe you can find a position where it wont cut, i was able to position it in a safe way, so i believe it might be the lack of any screening at the chip on the cheap design.
one quick question i bought the mhl adapter from dealextreme a while ago but i´ve never really used till now since i bought a ps3 controller, my question regards image quality.
I am aware that the mhl adapter that i bought it isn´t the official but many people rated it high quality, when i play for example an emulator or riptige gp the image quality looks a lot better on the phone than it does on a tv or pc monitor, i´ve tested both, i don´t know if its just because the screen is smaller the image looks sharper but for example playing mario 64 on a big screen the image looks a bit squared/pixelated.
I even installed a pc emulator to compare (looks better), forced anti aliasing with chainfire and still looks pixelated.
The info that appears on my monitor is that the image is working at 1080i 1920*1080.
Is this normal ?
I have the official Samsung MHL adapter. It works great, the only issue is the display is a little bit trimmed off from the top and bottom. I have checked it on multiple TVs so I don't think TV settings are the issue.

The cable output is HD, but its only cloning the phones screen resolution when not playing high res videos, thats what produces the low resolution view on the monitor, so yes, it is because on the small screen it looks sharper. I noticed that on the emulators this is even more visible than on other uses, maybe the emulator itself is generating lower res than phones screen? never really looked at it. Try to change the LCD Density, its not quite the same than higher resolution but helps a little (mind tho that touchwiz doesnt scle properly with changes in lcd density, meaning it gets a little messy, small font, 4 icons per row always etc).
flippity, i never noticed trimming on my MHL output. Will check it tho.

My original adapter has cuts followed by a horrible noise. It was a lot worse when i used the charger that comes with the phone, probably the electrical distribution in my block sucks. Powering the adapter with USB power from my notebook almost solved the problem.
But it's quite pointless powering the cellphone with a computer instead of just using the computer's HDMI... In fact the MHL support sucks IMO, the only true 1080i/p is the video player, not even the photo viewer supports it! The other manufacturers like HTC, LG, Motorola and even NVidia had the descence of releasing an API enabling this functionality since it's not supported by Android itself.
Now that Bloodrainer mentioned, I never used the MHL in airplane mode... interesting...
Well, i get nasty noise in audio output when connected to a cheap car charger, so yea, i'd vote for your houses electric wiring, sadly i dont know much about electrics my vote would be to try a grounded plug with a surge protector?

does cm9 support mhl or the ics leaked sammy rom!? will the api support be available with ics?

No clue about api support, none of the AOSP based roms suport MHL, as it requires much of the samsungs frame and stuff, so sadly cm, miui, etc dont support MHL, not tried the leaked ICS yet, but i belive it should support MHL as its samsung's release.

I have bought original MHL adapter and i face d exact same issue. I have tried various media players, stock ROMs, stock kernels and still d same issue keeps coming

incorrect i use the stock lp6 leaked rom and my samsung mhl adapter works fine.
I entered Flight Mode as Bloodrainer said, and apparently this fixed the cuts.
Does Cyanogenmod7 allow you to output in full 1080p?

Just received EPL-3PHP HDMI adapter from Amazon UK (£23.00) and happy to confirm working with my GT-N8010 with latest UK JB 4.1.2
Is it possible to attach a BT trackball/keyboard without a dongle, or somehow use an other adapter I can attach (possible by a double adapter)
Once connected to my TV the only way to change any input is via the Note.

If its a BT track ball I would think it will hook up just fine, same way a BT mouse would.

Requires root though, but pretty nice app. Now i can play all the games of my childhood: zelda (oot, n64), tekken (psx) without the need to install the damn ugly consoles in my living room .. thats just awesome!!
After installing the app I noticed that you can emulate a mouse. That is very useful to me for streaming movies from my server, look something up on imdb and so on with the hdmi adapter...

Thanks, not rooted, do not want to go in that direction, so am I correct in assuming you can only connect bt directly to tablet when you root it, otherwise I need a dongle??
So no way of having it connect to bt when using the hdmi adapter, bummer.
Question: Is the HDMI output lag-free, do the homescreens run smooth and is the image quality okay?
I just sent back the wireless allshare adapter because the streamed image has 15FPS when not buffered, the quality is worse than i expected and it ends every multitasking capability of the Note.

Well, keep in mind the ASCD won't mess with the resolution or color depth of the image displayed on the LCD, so if you see video quality issues (bad scaling or graininess or such) it's likely due to what your TV does with the not-quite 720P resolution of the signal from the Note 10.1 (1280x720 isn't a native resolution of most monitors and likely scales it to 1366x768), so I'm betting that the picture via the HDMI hard-wired cable will look the same (on static images) as did the picture from the ASCD.

I'm shopping around for an HDTV Adapter for my GT-N8010 at the moment, and I've noticed that several online shops are advertising a new 2013 model - EPL-NPHPBKG.

They claim that it is the next verson of EPL-3PHPBEG (the model that this thread is about). Does anyone know what the difference is? The only thing I can see that might be an improvement is "Simultaneously charge your Galaxy Note 10.1 while streaming". I've seen reports on other threads about their tablet not charging while plugged in to the HDTV adapter. Can you confirm if this functionality exists on your EPL-3PHP?

I dont know the id of my hdtv adapter but as far as i own it since the early days of my previous tab 10.1 (p7500) I am pretty sure it's the "old" one.
I can confirm the adapter is definetly charging my n8000 while connected to my tv behind the docking station (universal samsung), streaming .mkv from my ubuntu desktop / server machine and being controlley by emulated mouse with my ps3 gamepad (via sixaxxis).
Sure you won't win a speed challange with that configuration but the main point is it is charging. I guess about ~ 2..3 % / 0,5..1,0 h (never did a measurement ) but still charging. Thats pretty nice because sometimes when I come home from university and the battery is nearly empty (sometimes 2 days of usage with a single charge) I plug my note into the docking station, let it charge to 3 or 4 %, turn it on and start streaming. When I end the day and shut down the tv the note is at about ~10% and ready to get charged the whole night.

Update, just purchased apple Magic Trackpad looks like it works on my Tablet, No Dongle just Pin number input for connecting, so in theory I will be able to use it to control Note 10.1 whilst connected via HDMI adapter to TV, will confirm when it arrives this week.
Just received my EPL-3PHPBEG from Expansys. It was not the most expensive, but dirt cheap either. It works. It says it is for the Tab 10. The price on this seems to vary wildly with the cheaper ones (19-25$) all seeming to be out of stock, except today went back to Amazon and the Zeeestmm version now seems to be in stock and going for 29.00$
It works for my purpose - Powerpoint and other document projection. It does need to be powered, and the tab needs to be rebooted at least for the projector to recognize it. So it's working fine on my Tab Note 10.1.
What chaps me about Samsung, it the myriad of numbers and letters, all a bit different, but all seeming to be the same item. I thought it was bad with the phones and tabs, but it is beyond annoying with accessories.

Thanks for the reminder. Probably the image will look not better than before. However, it was not a difficult decision why i sent the Allshare Cast Hub back to amazon. For 60€ it's just to much for what it would have been for me. Ending all MultiWindow possibilities is probably the worst part. Well, with the HDMI cable i won't be able to connect USB anymore .. so everything has pros and cons. For what it offers, the wireless adapter was just too expensive and i was really annoyed that it was never remarked on ANY website i read that it ends multitasking features of the Note 10.1.
Hi does anyone know of a wireless HDMI dongle that works with the GPad for home use? I have a slightly odd setup so will need to do the sound via the headphone socket (and don't want audio delay). In theory HDMI 1.3 should work it out. Does anyone know of a dongle that is worth trying? There seems precious little information out there...

Not wireless, but I bought a cheapo slimport off of eBay and it works just fine... Lots of Miracast options there too, but I can't make a recommendation.

Thanks, which slimport did you get? That would certainly be the safer option for my purposes (and cheaper!). There seem to be some costing £7 and some costing £30. I have no idea if it is a passive device, in which case they should all be the same, or if there is actually some electronics in the slimport in which case perhaps best to get a more expensive one.
The miracast options on ebay all have very mixed reviews...

I specifically got that one because I'd rather have my charging plugin at the BACK of the TV instead of tangled up in the front. Most Slimport adapters have the USB end and the charging end within inches of each other.
I find it works just fine, and the G-Pad will also let you do other stuff while the video is mirrored on the screen (yet another thing the iPad! doesn't do!). The only thing that doesn't work well is charging while plugged into the TV - as it's designed for phone use, it's only a trickle / 500mA charge (if that), which will keep the G-Pad going but won't charge appreciably (or at all) while you're outputting to the TV. Better just to use it only for the TV and keep your regular charger for direct use.

Happy to go with either miracast or chromcast so long as it does what it is supposed to do, the video quality is good (eg for watching netflix on my 1080p projector) and i can use the headphone socket on the LG Gpad (not the amp as it doesnt have hdmi). But I suspect miracast is better for netflix?

Does anyone have any miracast experience? The reviews on Amazon are shocking and I can't believe it is that bad...
My g pad works well with the official samsung allshare cast hub. So the tablets screen gets monitored on the tv.

Thanks. They seem to get much better reviews on amazon, but at £50 they also seem to cost double. I guess one has to pay up for this! Is there much of a lag? Not worried about gaming, but more about lipsync with the headphone output on the LG against the video...
I brought mine of ebay for £40. It does have some lag but not too much lag and so it good for internet and look at images. Games also work but u might notice some lag 1/10 Times.

Well in the end I "played safe" and got a CAMAC SlimPort (rathern than miracast). I plugged it into my 1080p projector but nothing comes out. Do I have to set anything on the LG? It is running LG's Kitkat. I note that if I try to set the Miracast toggle, then it wont allow it saying there is an external monitor connected.

For anyone that is interested, I finally got this going. Had to use a different HDMI cable. Video quality on netflix is pretty good, although it is a bit jerky. Guess I will have to watch a whole film to really see how it goes. The sound out of the headphone socket is definitely delayed and there is an easily noticeable lipsync problem with it, but I would say it is tolerable...
It's not cheap but from what I have read the Amazon Fire TV and Allcast could have screen monitoring with sound remaining with the device casting the screen. I haven't been able to locate where I read this though.
Netflix works very well using the ~$50 Belking HDMI 2.0 Miracast Dongle. Virtually flawless playback.
New FireTV, unrooted, running software version 51.1.4.1_user_514013920. Running SPMC 13.3.3.
After maybe a day of use, the audio on the FireTV develops an high-pitched 'whistle' effect. It's not a constant whistle. It only accompanies the sound you are hearing. It is more noticeable the louder the audio. If I reboot the FireTV, the problem goes away for while. It affects all audio system-wide including SPMC (I spend most time in SPMC, don't use Amazon apps much yet).
FireTV audio set to 'Dolby Digital Plus Off' but happens no matter what FireTV audio setting is. If I unplug HDMI and plug back in, problem persists. Rebooting FireTV fixes it (until the next day when it recurs).

I can NOT hear any distortion at all on the youtube vid you link. Sounds fine to me. I turned the volume up and turned off anything making noise. Sorry I'm not of any help.

You know, it's not 'distortion'. I chose the wrong word. It's a high pitched whistle sound. That's the best I can describe it. My 12-year old walked in and noticed it. I know it's not just me LOL.

I'm sorry, it's not obvious to me. Have you tried taking your AFTV to a neighbors/friends house and seeing if it has the same problem on their TV? This way you can rule out your TV as the cause. Another thing to try is a different HDMI cable.

How can it be my TV or HDMI cable if I unplug the FireTV then plug it back in (reboot it) and the problem goes away? It is an old TV (from 2003 I think), I'll give you that.
(What I need to do (tomorrow) is record another Youtube video (A vs. B) so the difference can be clearly distinguished. I'll post again tomorrow )

It's about finding what the problem is. By using a different TV, you can rule out if it's an AFTV problem, or possibly your TV. You said you returned another AFTV for the same problem already, and 2 of them have the same problem, which isn't common, and you getting both? Not very likely.
So if we rule out the TV and can rule out the HDMI, then it leaves that you got very unlucky and got 2 AFTV's that ended up with the same problem.
And do you happen to hear the sound loudest when you have a mostly white screen?

I hadn't noticed a correlation between whites in the screen and the audio anomaly. I'll have to go back tomorrow and inspect further. I hear your suggestions about ruling out the TV and cable. I have another cable so I will try that very soon. I also have another TV- I will try that one also. I will update this thread as I find out. Thank you kindly!!

I don't have a fire TV but it sounds like a crappy HDMI cable. Try a different brand then what you are using. I had got some cheap HDMI cables from amazon and this happened to me with one of my bluray players and a computer.

I have a gold tipped Vizio HDMI cable that I got from Wal-Mart at an inexpensive price.
I've never had any problems with it at all.
Look for a gold tipped one with 4K support like my Vizio HDMI cable.
Even when FTV is max 1080P,it helps tons that the HDMI cable supports an even higher resolution.

I'm going to troubleshoot with a different HDMI cable. However, it is confusing to me how a reboot of the FireTV would resolve the audio issue completely (for a while) with the same HDMI cable. Can a low-quality HDMI cable degrade or become corrupt during it's connection to the display over time?

i'd agree, but you should still try, maybe its the TV, when the FireTV sends different audio sources with like different bitrates or number of channels or something to your TV its somehow borking or mis interpreting the signal.. doesnt happen all the time because there could be something in some video content somewhere at some point triggering it to mess up.. but you would think a TV reset would fix it.. did you try unplugging the TV and just leaving the fireTV running and seeing what happens when you power the TV back up?
It could be electrical noise. Try a different outlet / circuit and see if that helps. It also could be noise / interference picked up in the HDMI cable.

The Vizio HDMI cable was my replacement for a cheap nickel-plated GE HDMI cable that had major issues such as Slenderman static randomly appearing.
Words Of Advice:Make sure to always go for gold-plated HDMI cables,avoiding the cheap nickel-plated ones.

I see the problem. It would drive me mad as well.
I have a cheap long hdmi cable. I highly doubt that will make a difference. Bestbuy always sells the gold plated one. As for the sound, test it directly to the TV. Are you going through a processor. I had mine go through the bose lifestyle 535 and I got a lot of distortion and I thought something was wrong with the firetv. Who would think anything would be wrong with bose. Eventually it turned out the bose got defective and bose changed the processor under warranty and the flicker is totally gone.
Try it direct on the TV and see what happens. if not try it on another tv and try isolating the problem one at a time. Test other hdmi cables as well.

The FTV is connected directly to my old Panasonic TH-37PX50U (from 2004 I think). I'm still waiting for the audio whistling problem to recur again today.

does it happen with other sources? if not It may be the audio sync. If it still does not fix, then try hdmi to RC
If you still have issues, try researching on converting the hdmi to analog with left right maybe? something like the one below. since the tv is old, it may not be able to handle the hdmi signals correctly.?

I had an older 2nd gen AppleTV connected to the same TV earlier. No issues there. I used that AppleTV for several years. Still waiting for the audio issue to happen again today..

the noise may come back. did you change out your hdmi cable. If it still happens. try the hdmi to component and see if it goes away. If you have a video processor like the bose or something else that may help too.
I'm trying to resurrect a 42" 1080p lcd which works fine except with certain devices (ps3, Sony Google TV, and of course aftv). Apple TV 2 & 3, roku xd and RPI all work. I've tried countless methods including power cycling and every HDMI cable I own. Plug in the aftv and it says "no signal"
This is not a problem specific to aftv but I figured somebody has had the same issue and maybe found a fix I haven't tried. I'd appreciate any ideas including causes. Seems obvious this is a handshake issue but why do some devices work and some don't? Ps3 is notorious for this but other devices like aftv not as much. I'd even be willing to buy an adapter if anyone's confident enough to think it might work...
Btw--no signal means exactly that. I don't get picture or sound. Google TV manifested differently, picture would flash on & off with sound. The other devices mentioned just yield "no signal"

one weird non-obvious thing about HDMI - the signal source, i.e. your console/tv-box/whatever is actually drawing a bit of power from the TV. not a huge amount, but something nominal.
this is one of the reasons why getting a not necessarily better but just different cable makes a difference - sometimes just the shortest cable you can manage. similarly setting lower resolution. (although you said you'd tried that)
could be your TV is getting old and maybe some components wearing out a little?
I had this exact problem a couple years ago with my no-name-brand generic 42" LCD and various Android sticks. the TV was decent in general, but it quite obviously was not supplying enough power on HDMI. lowering resolution to 720p fixed it, and I was eventually able to get 1080p by randomly finding the "right" cable.
another thing that worked (and is a really, really stupid going-backwards sub-sub-optimal solution) ... I tried a (powered) converter box that separates the HDMI signal out into VGA + 3.5mm stereo. seriously stupid in terms of getting decent resolution and in so many other ways. but it solved the power problem. (there are similar powered boxes that do DVI-out, and I think even ones that just go HDMI->HDMI, and only exist to e.g. break out the audio or other reasons)

I have considered buying an adapter in the past, but not for this tv . Yes. I have many tvs and this is not the only "hdmi impaired" one.
My bedroom tv has an issue with audio cutting in and out indefinitely if the aftv is powered on before the tv. A reboot fixes the glitch but you can imagine how annoying that is. The solution posted here was an hdmi with pin 13 removed. Apparently theres only one company that makes these and imo they're a bit pricey. But I still might get one.
I hadnt considered buying one for this tv but if it fixes the issue i would. There is a way to remove pin 13 yourself , however, it requires tools i don't think i have. Plus i worry that damage could be done if i screw up. Also, im not certain if it would matter for the tv in the op but of course if i bought one i could try it on that tv.

In my case was to use an HDMI to DVI cable where I proved my LCD was still working but had power issues. then I tried different HDMI cables and found one that finally worked with that LCD. the cable was long and came with my xbox one. all the other cables except those two wont work with that LCD monitor. They are happily married since then. Just to let you know that happens sometimes.

Just to see a conclusion to this thread...I got aftv working on this TV.
First, I switched it to 720p on a different TV
Then, I tried it--fail as usual BUT 3RD CABLE'S A CHARM!
Btw-- ps3 still won't work. That's probably why it took awhile to get aftv working (soooo many failed attempts with ps3) I though aftv would no doubt be the same.
