Questions About Kit Kat - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
Basically I'm going to be out of the country in 2 weeks time and did not want to update in case something got borked and I'd be without certain stuff while away. Essentially I've got the viper audio mod on a stock 4.3 rom which is now "unrooted" so certain other apps can work properly. Viper still works fine on this unrooted phone though.
In relation to Kit Kat I have a few questions so I know whether it's worth me upgrading now.
Can I downgrade back to 4.3 on a knox voided boot-loader phone?
Does the stock camera or the new google camera app allow you to save to the SD?
Does viper4android work on it?
With this SD business, can I still download stuff onto it and/or copy stuff from a usb stick connected to my phone onto the SD?
That's it for now

Should I and how to root?

Hi, I just bought my SIII 2 weeks ago and I heard that there is a process just like jailbreaking on the iPhone called rooting. I just switched from apple because it sucked and gave me no freedom (not to mention I love widgets). So I want to root my phone but for some reason, my Windows Vista won't recognize it (yes, I already installed the drivers and reinstalled them). So how can I root my phone without connecting it to the computer. I can connect to Kies via Wi-fi. Also, what does rooting do to your phone. I am a Java programmer, so I don't think it will be too complex for me. Would the root remain once the Jelly Bean 4.1 update came to the Galaxy SIII?
1. What does rooting do?
2. How can I root my phone without connecting to the computer
3. Would the root stay if I updated to Jelly Bean?

easiest way..to root etc,, but again gotta be connected to ur pc,,. also try and re-install the drivers and use the usb cable that came with the phone..
As far as I know. u need a pc to root etc..
and never take a ota update while rooted.. etc.. just wait til a rooted version of said update is released then flash it...
No one can tell ya how to do these things.. like everything else research and read,, is the best way.. to learn,, plus im sure there are a million youtube how to vids also... I have been rooting androids since the htc hero.. and never once had a brick.. same for flashing roms in the old days of windows mobile.. go slow and read and you should be ok...

[HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter - [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers / Sasktel]
That forum gives you a step by step guide how to root your.. there's a program called Odin that you need but you'll see all that when you read it.. everything is in the first few posts as far as how to do it..
Rooting gives you access to the root folders of the phone.. it allows for removal of bloatware, overclocking/underclocking, undervolting etc..
It also allows you to run custom ROMs.. I've been running a jelly bean ROM for weeks now.
As far as ota updates you would actually have to download them now if you change the recovery (which is required for flashing ROMs) if you leave the stock recovery you should be OK to still receive ota updates..
Most people on here root for performance reasons (better performance, battery battery life) but many also root to use custom ROMs that are enhanced over the stock ones or to get the newest OS faster than waiting for your carrier to release it. Some roms are called aokp/aosp which is basically stock android with no touchwiz its what you would get on a nexus device from Google.. on this phone however aokp/aosp will remove alot of the stock functionality such as swipe for a screen shot, smart stay, direct call, etc.. there are apps that imitate the lost features but rarely are they as fluid and properly functioning as the stock features built into the device..
But with that said to each their own. Make sure you read and read and read what your doing or you can end up with a nice $600 paper weight that is now void of a warranty.

[Q] Giving up on OTA JB, just a few questions before I flash CM10 M2

So at this point I've given up on Samsung and Sprint releasing an official copy of Jelly Bean anytime soon and am looking to root and flash Cyanogenmod 10 to my GS3. I just had a few questions about the rom and such before I commit to this.
1. I've heard the camera app isn't as good as the stock Touchwiz one (i.e. can't save to SD card, less features). Is there anyway to get the stock app on CM10?
2. Everyone says rooting a GS3 is easy, but from what I've read keeping the flash counter at 0 is a bit more difficult. Does increasing the counter void your warranty, and if so how would I go about keeping it at 0?
3. I know it's possible to get Google Now on CM10, but are there any more steps than just downloading and installing the APK?
4. I own a Macbook and would prefer to do everything through it. Using a PC isn't out of the question but it'd be kind of a hassle. How much of this can I do through my Mac?
(EDIT) 5. With CM10 M2 I don't need to flash every new release, right? I remember hearing they recently put in OTA updating and will push new versions there. It'd be great if that were the case.
I know these are kind of noob questions, but I've only every rooted my OG EVO and have almost no experience flashing roms. And considering I'm not paying for my phone or service plan I'd love to keep my phone as stable as possible with the warranty intact.

1. You do have the option of using the Touchwiz JB build. which has all the camera features and that can be found at the link below http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32152586&postcount=1
2.It will void your warranty but as long as you put it back to stock and remove the root you should be fine. (Remember to make a Nandroid Backup)
3.Google Now comes preinstalled on any Jelly Bean Rom.
4.You can do all of this through a Mac its very similar to the PC setup
If you need any tutorials on anything check out QBKing77 on Youtube he does video tutorials for all of this.

Thanks, that helped a lot!
I guess I realized this voids my warranty regardless of the counter haha, but would going back to stock with a Nandroid backup reset it?
Also, say I decide to go with CM10 over a Jelly Bean leak, would Google Now still come pre installed or would I need to find the APK?

[Q] Want to update GN2 stock rom - help

So I'm currently running a rooted version of the stock 4.1.1 rom. I've been getting annoying notifications to update for about 9+ months but I just keep ignoring them. I'd like to update the phone to the latest version and I don't care about running any custom roms, all I care about is keeping my root. So what would be the easiest/quickest solution for me? Can I just allow the phone to update itself or will I lose my root? Is there a method where I can keep everything on my phone and update?
Sorry if all this is explained elsewhere, I've had difficulties finding the right words to google.
Additionally, my phone has a cracked screen and I'd like to send it in to cash in on my insurance at some point. How important is it for me to return the phone to a totally stock rom without the root? Will they care?
Thanks

Yes man they differently care. Don't show them a rooted phone ant take off your SD card and delete all files on your internal storage that can say that it was rooted and hide your apks (or delete) too...About update : i think update is not a problem as long as you can easy root it... cheers

[Q] Is it safe to OTA update to 4.3 on my rooted phone?

So I rooted my phone using the method outlined in this thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687
I used odin to flash the 4.1.2 T-Mobile image and I stopped at the part that said "If you just want a stock, rooted phone with no custom recovery, no plans to flash custom roms, etc. then you can stop HERE" because I only wanted root so I could fix the keyboard bug (keyboard would revert to stock one after resets).
So my question is, can I update to 4.3 via the OTA update that is in the About Device > Software Update section in the phone? Looking elsewhere the official instructions say that the phone should not be rooted before updating. If so, can I get rid of the root in order to update? (As far as I know, the keyboard bug doesn't exist in 4.3 anyway so I don't think I need the root anymore). If not, how can I update to 4.3?
Lastly, and somewhat unrelated, can I use the factory data reset in the Back up and reset section of the settings? Previously in my experience with roms, this would lead to a boot loop but I'm not sure if that is the case with this so-called rooted stock rom.
Thanks in advance.
You can use OTA RootKeeper to temporarily disable Root so that you will receive the update. Or you could also visit the Root66 thread you have linked. There you will see Rooted version of the 4.3 update.
Having said that, You will want to Research the consequences of the 4.3 Stock update. In particular you wish to research the consequences of CIQ, KNOX and the new EFuse Bootloader.
I am by no means an expert but I figure I just did this so it may help you out. I updated my phone to 4.3 accidentally on purpose and then I decided to root my phone like the next day. I used Mr Robinson's method and then used his third method to download the ROM manager and install CWM Recovery and then I put Cyanogen on it. I have not had any issues except the app Trailer Addict doesn't work with it but that is not a big issue. I have everything else that I wanted and more. I don't care about the flash counter since I am not under warranty. Oh and you can use Titanium Backup to back up your apps. I didn't do this the first time so I had to back up from Kies 3 by dragging files onto my SD card and not all worked. I hope I helped a little.

[Q] GT-N5100 Italian 3g - to root or not to root

Hello fellow androidians
I am here because I desperately need to play Baldurs Gate on my Note 8 but Kies won't update my device - as far as I can understand, the Italian model is not exactly looked after and it's still running 4.1.2. So I won't be able to move stuff to the sd card for a while.
I have a few questions regarding this issue:
Can I safely root it?
And if I root it I can still use the base android or am I to flash a custom rom?
I would like to keep S Note which I use a lot, so any suggestion here is highly appreciated.
Will rooting mean loosing all the stuff I have in my galleries or will it be possible to root without a backup?
After years of Android use I collected a lot of memorabilia, which position and time of download is very precious to me. Call me ocd and you won't be wrong.
In case I will go for the root, will the tips provided here work on my model baseband version N5100XXBMC8?
I would be much happier if I had the possibility of updating to kit kat straight away, but this seems unlikely
How silly of me thinking Italian carriers would update my little treasure!
Normally you will not loose any data when you root your device. Base will not change. No need to flash a Custom Rom. So root your origunal 4.1.2 and finished.
