[Q] SD card MTP and mass storage in the car - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I’m trying out my new Sony Xperia Z1C.
And there are some things I have questions about
Before I had a HTC One and I could connect it by cable to my audio equipment in my car (BMW 3 F series). This worked because the BMW can read MTP devices.
Connecting the Sony the first time it took ages before it was ready and then only the contents of the internal memory were shown.
When starting mirrorlink on the phone made it unusable in the car.
With a task manager I could remove the mirrorlink background task, is there no other way to stop that background task?
But the problem remained, it could connect but nothing of the SD card was shown.
So I switched to Mass storage and tried to connect again.
This was a lot faster but only four directories were shown.
I copied files on the sd card directly from my pc and not through the phone connection,
so I reformatted the card
and copied files to it through the phone connected to the pc. Copying then failed on .m3u files (why , the phone cannot do anything with them so why not copying?),
so I skipped all those files and
mounted the sd card once more as mass storage,
and now the car audio can see all of the directories. Now I know how to copy mp3 files but it is still a strange way of working, copying to the SD card directly works so much faster.
Mounting the SD card as MTP has almost the same result as before, it reads the card a lot faster now but it still does not show content of the sd.
Can anybody explain me what the correct way of working is,
is MTP only for internal memory (when connecting to the pc on MTP I can see both sdcard0 (internal memory) as sdcard1 (sd card )?
What about killing background tasks such as mirrorlink, how to proceed?
What about copying files to the SDCard, from the pc to the card or from the pc through the phone and then to the card?
Are not all filetypes supported on the card?, I think my initial problem was related to the M3U files.

no time to get into details but i know 2 things
MTP mounts the phones internal memory plus the external sd card
mass storage mounts only the sd card like any other mass storage device
and yes, MTP is slower compared to the mass storage.

[Q] USB Storage setup

Confused on External SD card, Internal SD card etc etc. I have a 32GB Patriot Class 10 card. I formatted this card in Clockwork recovery on the phone with a 1024MB Partition. Don't think it even asked me about ext 3, or 4 etc. OK. Now, If I use settings, then under wireless and Network settings Usb Utilities, Click on connect the storage to PC. I connect my USB cable then I have the familiar Android and it says USB is connected. OK, now I have a drive I will call Drive Q. This drive has all the TMobile stuff such as QIK , Photo editor, etc. It also has a folder called External_SD as well as another Folder called usbStorage. This drive Q is roughly 12GB. OK...Now, my SD card which is 32GB is seen as drive U on my desktop. This drive has my clockwork folder with my backups and my Music folder.
I guess I am trying to figure out the best use of drives and there intended purposes. The External_SD folder is only 580Kb or so. The usbStorage folder is a zero byte folder. And finally, when I did run a backup using Clockwork recovery, it basically said it was skipping External SD card since folder was empty.
Now that I am confused on all of this, maybe someone here can actually follow my post and make sense of how the storage is working on our phones

[REF] which one is External SD and Internal SD?

Hey all, I've tried to search here and have read what I could but I'm trying to understand how we actually see the external sd storage on the phone itself other then "settings", "storage" or when the phone is connected to a computer. I just installed a 32gb card and when looking in root explorer I'm not seeing it. Also when the phone is connected to the computer I am seeing a second drive letter this now accessible so I'm guessing that's it. I do see the card listed under storage as see I have 29.50gb available.
When I installed the card I just went into recovery, mounts & storage and then selected format /sd card. Do I need to also partition the card? I'm just trying to better understand these functions in relation to this phone and being rooted.
Thx
The second drive you see on your computer is the internal 16GB memory of your phone.
When you connect to your computer, the first drive is the "USB storage", around 11GB, which is part of your phone's internal storage. The second drive is your SD card.
If you want to look at your external SD card from your phone, use any file explorer program, it by default will go to the "USB storage", which is not your external SD card. Look for a folder called "external_sd", this folder is mounted to your SD card.
SD TIP
just a Tip
it is SAFE to rename the 2 mounted drives
so I named my internal SD as SGH-T989
and my external SD as the actual SD model+size like:
ADATA32GB
Transcent16GB
SandDisk64GB
then next time you plug it into Linux or Windows or any PC you will know right away which is which
Big thanks, I appreciate everyone's comments. That's a great tip on renaming the drives....doing that now
good info!
the first/second order can change for individual users, depending on what your OS detects first. Also these can be changed at any time, through the registry or through Disk Management. If for some reason you don't want to rename the drives as suggested above (and you should) you could alternatively just create a text document on the drive labelled as such.

[Q] How to access Local SD card after flashing Starburst ROM

Sorry for such a newbie question but I can't find an answer in any forums. I used to be able to get access to both my external and internal sd card when i plugged into my windows 7 laptop. it would show as a new device SPD something. When i clicked on that icon in windows explorer it would break out two different drives the External and Internal. After flashing starburst rom and plugging in the device, it just shows an (F) Drive which is my standard storage. My phone then asks me for USB mass storage permission and it goes into mass storage mode. Clicking on F will bring me to my external SD card but I can't figure out how to access data on the built in memory chip. Any help would be appreciated!
If you got to Settings>Applications>Development and check allow usb debugging it should detect both cards as removable drives that you can access.

[Q] Mass storage for SD-Card only

Please, can I active mass storage for only Sd Card?
If I connect usb cable and set mass storage, phone create 2 discs (first 100MB internal memory and after SD-Card). If I connect phone to my dvd player, player mount only first create disc. So I always mount only internal memory, I can not mount SD Card.

Can't sync to ext. Sd Card?

My computer recognizes both the internal storage and external sd card when plugged in. Windows media player, does not. It'll only find the internal storage device on the SIII, but not the external storage. I was able to sync to External sd card whenever I formatted it. Ultimately I can keep doing that, but it seems like a hassle to drop important files onto desktop, format, sync, and re-drag those files back on. Any of you willing to lend ideas of how to avoid that?
