Xbmc can't download subtitle - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone. I just noticed that my xbmc fire tv can't download subtitles in the movie folder over SMB. Seems like a write permission issue but it works with other machines running windows. Maybe its an android issue?
I can delete a file just fine with xbmc. It's just the subtitle addon that i have a problem. I did a search about this issue and couldn't find a solution. Maybe using NFS to share my files but that seems too complicated on windows. Or use a local folder inside the fire tv to save my subtitles but thats not ideal since the subtitle wouldnt be available to my other machines.
Anyone have this same problem?

Have you tried different subtitle sources? I've had trouble in the past downloading subtitle, but apparently it's just right at the moment when the server I'm downloading from was down. I added a different source and that one worked.

The problem is not with service. But xbmc for some reason cant save the subtitle file on the movie folder over smb. Even though i set the permisions for this.
Anyway i gave up trying to fix it and just learned how to create a NFS share in windows using haneWin NFS. Now everything is working fine.
Thanks

Ah okay. I guess I saw the thread title and then just tuned out your actual message I myself have been using smb without a problem so it's good that you've found a solution!

I have the same problem.
XBMC cant access my SMB share for writing. XBMC has all the rights. I seems it has something to do with the firetv. Now i have to download the subs again when i want to re watch the video, its really annoying.
Does someone have a solution?

In the end i use the NFS protocol in my windows pc to share the folders. This way i can write the subs file just fine.
I tried a LOT to see if i could fix thr smb permissions but in the end i gave up. I am using haneWin NFS to share my folders using nfs. It works fine.

Ok. I will try that thank you.

thats weird, im using SMB share and it has no problems with subtitles. you shuold double check you have the right permissions in XBMC

Are You sure you dont have any issues? because the subtitles work fine until you watch the movie again and realize there is no subtitle because it wasnt actually saved in the same folder.
And are your movies shared from a windows pc? Anyway i havent tried it again to see if this issue was fixed recently. It can be a lot of things (windows version, wifi settings, permission seyyings etc etc)
But like i said its working fine now but im using nfs

Which Windows Version do you have? I have Windows 8.1.
EDIT: Ok I tried NFS. It works fine now. TY. Strange why it doesn't work with SMB although I set the right permissions..

no problems, i can see the subtitles are getting written on the folder of each movie/episode and rewatching them loads them up automatically.
not using windows pc, i have a router (RT-AC68U) sharing a hard drive., currently using wired lan, but i had no problems with wifi before i switched

Ok thanks for your reply. Seems like the problem is maybe sharing from a windows pc. I use windows 8.1 too.

XBMC is awesome on Nexus 7!

Just installed the pre beta of XBMC on the N7! For a pre beta, this app is really polished. Some buggy touchscreen things on the main skin but the touch skin works awesome. I set up my smb share and it recognized and downloaded all the info for my movies and TV shows. Can't wait to see how this app turns out when its out of beta!
Might I ask where you got the apk from?
I don't suppose its the same as this one is it?
Just about to try that on my N7...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772433</p><p>
Tested on N7
Tried it out, and it did work with SMB shares right away. Always have loved XMBC on many of my home network devices (wife does too). The resolution needs some work and it would not landscape correctly but all other loved XBMC options were there and it looks really promising! Nice work to the Devs!
Thanks for the heads up, this is exactly what I needed!
Love it!
New to xbmc..
If I'm running xbmc w upnp enabled on my Linux computer, how can I access my videos through the network with this app? Or is there a better way to do this
merci pour le partage, J'ai le même souci.

You shouldn't need xbmc on another machine to get it to work on your android tablet, within xbmc video(or music and pictures), click on on add videos and the choose source and navigate(through SMB shares) to get to the share you want to add. This link will explain how to set it up: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Adding_videos_to_the_library/Adding_media_sources

xbmc is not a host/transcoder software. it plays media, it doesn't stream it to other devices. as another poster mentioned, you are accessing media directly from the smb shares.
OK thanks for your reply. I am relatively new to xbmc. I came from tversity due to the massively better library functionality of xbmc.

I tried the XBMC on the N7 and agree it works well! Going forward, I doubt I'll use this because if I want to watch movies, I just play them via my JB'd Apple TV2 running XBMC. I do however love using the XBMC Official Remote app on the N7. Makes browsing libraries so much easier.
Everything works for me. I, using the channel one repository but I'm only getting the video yo play in SD.. how do I gry HD playback?

Can I ask how you got smooth playback? XBMC seems to be only working in software mode as my 720p files are very choppy in this yet smooth in BS Player.
Have anyone made hulu work on it?

Yes you can share videos from your laptop - You can use SMB shares on Windows by setting up a workgroup. Have a look at the XBMC forums as they have a lot of wiki pages with a lot of info.

[Q] XBMC space used

How much data storage is your install of XBMC using on your Fire TV?
I know it's going to vary by content but I'm just looking to see what the average is.
Thanks
Mine is 830mb. I have 300 movies and about 20 tv shows. Also some addons installed.
I really look forward to be able to use a pen drive or portable hd for storage...

Strange. Mine is 803 MB. I have 1,245 movies and 29 TV shows. I wonder why yours is so large. Before letting it suck down al the info/images, I set it to not retrieve actor info/images in order to save space. Perhaps that uses a lot of space.
On a side note, I initially set XBMC to get my files via UPnP from a PC running XBMC with the same media collection instead of my current setup using SMB file sharing. The UPnP setup was only around 300MB since it pulls all the info/images from the PC. I didn't go with that setup because using UPnP doesn't allow you to use "Library" mode. You have to use "Videos" to get to everything. But it's definitely a good option if you want to reduce XBMC's disk usage.

[Q] Possible to stream from PC?

Hey guys,
I feel like there is an answer to this question, but, I promise I did search (followed the cardinal rule for forum posting)! Is it possible to hack/mod the amazon fire tv to stream content from your desktop to your TV over the network? This is the only feature I feel is missing and would be awesome if this little beat could do so.
Thanks for any help guys.

I'm not sure but there probably is a casting apk that will work somewhere. Check AllShare, AllCast, etc. for a casting app/receiver that includes desktop capability. You will have to install it with ADB on the Fire TV.
Why would you want to do this? IMO, there are plenty of easier ways to do this. for personal videos, upload to youtube, just set your channel as private. For website based streaming, you could load Firefox browser apk. For movies and TV shows, use xbmc.
Maybe with a little more info on what you want to stream, will help find an answer.

Use plex man.
Go to plex.tv on your PC. Download the plex media server for your PC. On your firetv, download the plex apk. It can also be sideloaded if you already purchased it somewhere else. That's all you need.
I use plex to stream pictures and home videos without a problem.

Worked perfectly! Thanks man! I do have one more question for you though as you seem pretty active on these forums. What would be the point to mod your fire TV? As in what do people gain from doing so, free games?
..
JJ-KwiK said:
You can already sideload any apk without the need to root the device. Although, this isn't the site to talk about that. Root also isn't available as of yet for this device.
I'm looking forward to root for a few reasons.
- Ability to use apps that require root. Ex. an app that can power off your device, so it's not always in standby.
- Ability to change the launcher without the need for Llama.
- Ability to install apps that are currently confirmed as not incompatible.
- Overclock it, to make it run faster.
- Remove Preinstalled Crapware, that can't be uninstalled otherwise.

Why do u need some unknown third party software to just play videos from PC?
Plex?
What da?
Turn on Windowx file sharing on PC.
Connect from any Android using Dice Player or File Manager HD+MX Player.

New videos not showing in xbmc

Not sure if anyone can help or if I need to take this to the xbmc forums. I have all of my videos being shared by smb to my FTV and just recently any new videos I download are not being updated to xbmc. I have xbmc running on a windows pc and all videos are updating right away but for some reason not showing on the FTV. I thought maybe it's the naming but each video is named correctly either via sickbeard or couch potato. Even if I browse the files through the file explorer I don't see any recently added videos. I can see all videos if I use the plex app or plexbmc so it doesn't seem to be a smb sharing issue. Anyone have any ideas?

Did you recently upgrade the firmware on the Fire TV?
Also, you using a centralized database for your media collection or is each client responsible for their own updates?

It's been discussed awhile back. Great app. I use it on my Fire TV 1. I think the keyboard doesn't work though, unless I just have an older version. Also, are you using it on the Fire TV 2? Was my understanding that it didn't work on the new Fire TV.
thanks
I use it on my fire stick..
Someone with a FTV 2 can give it a go and see how it works..
What I like about it on the stick is once you add the file explore in then it let's you ftp and or connect to a SMB easy enough to side load apps

OK, I have told the development team about that and hopefully they can get a fix for it..
Also they need to get the file explorer to see hidden folders so that it is useful for kodi userdata files..
I am using the stick here in Australia so all of the Amazon apps are a waste of time for me..
Unless I look into VPN type setup but I can't be bothered st this stage..
so apart from Kodi and a few other music streaming apps, its just pretty much just a plaything..
