Sprint and T-mobile merge agreement - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2014/06/04/sprint-and-t-mobile-agree-on-merger-terms/
lets hope it doesn't go through.
what are your guys/gals thoughts on it?
PS: if its in the wrong area or doesnt need to exist just move/delete it.

I don't know anything about the phone services but I do know that T-Mobile has made no attempt to lock me out of the hardware I have purchased. Does Sprint lock the bootloader?
Frank

This makes no sense as tmobile is on a role with their un carrier strategy. No sense at all.
DEMON GALAXY NO SOULS NOTED !!!!!

i dropped sprint it was horrid do not want anything to do with them period ! i left att for tmobile and have been very happy .. im hoping the FCC jumps in and stop this cluster **** from happening

For once I hope the FCC does the right thing and doesn't allow this to go through.

even if it does go through, there's a good chance John Legere runs the show

Obvious question- will they be CDMA or GSM after this goes through? Or both?

Sprint wants them for the LTE spectrum they have so it's not going to matter if it's CDMA or GsM

Then its going to be gsm since it would be for the LTE. Look at what happened when the mergered with metropcs. Honestly that is too much mergers.

I just left sprint for t-mobile last month it's hard to admit that I was with sprint for about 7 years then they went to crap on their network I truly hope that this merger doesn't happen. Is there any way us people can start a petition? do we even have a say in this type of matter? I will do anything to stay away from sprint!

I had sprint on the epic4gtouch and note 2, the speeds were horrid but the bootloaders were unlocked like tmobile. I dont want the merger to happen either because im sure prices will go up since its less competition, but cant do anything about it and hope john legere would still run things over on his side.

Bloomberg: John Legere likely to be CEO of combined Sprint/T-Mobile if deal goes ahead

To be honest screw Sprint but if john legere does become CEO then you're looking at a force aimed at destroying Verizon and att. John leger is a beast. He's the reason why Tmobile is Tmobile the way it is today. Unlimited data, no more contract, JUMP program. This guy is a beast. If it doesn't go through then sprint will be paying up $1billion to Tmobile. More money for towers and LTE spectrum

Personally I'm against this merger but these things run through my head...
1. Sprint is not buying out T-Mobile. Softbank is the company trying to do that. They just happen to own Sprint.
2. If this were to happen could it go down like how Cingular did with AT&T. Memory trip, Cingular bought out AT&T Wireless...and yet AT&T remained and Cingular dropped their name. Could this happen with T-Mobile. T-Mobile is the IT brand, Sprint is the sh!t brand.
2a. Notice who is talking about the Sprint CEO? Nobody.
3. T-Mobile will stay GSM. CDMA for all intent and purposes is dead. Even Verizon is using GSM.
4. With TMoUS in charge they could get access to areas that would be grandfathered in.
Again, I'm against the deal but these are things running through my mind.

Sprint has pretty much stopped working on their network vision rollout. My friend who works for Sprint said Sprint techs are jumping ship left and going to t-mo. I think this is going to happen, and it quite possibly is a good thing. For me I have one thing to say : as far as me, *grandfathered* Just will have better coverage, with Sprint's towers, and Legere at the helm. Hoorah!

has this adversely affected your experience with the phone, or were you just expecting more?
I don't even pay attention to down/up speeds anymore... they only serve to make you envious of other people with higher data transfer rates for no reason. if the phone is working well and web functions are performed at an acceptable speed for you, who cares?
have fun with those ATT overages @ 2GB data.

This. And even with an AT&T employee discount your bill will probably be more than an EM+ Plan on T-mobile lol.
If you're complaining about 3mbps down on T-mobile, you're in for a big surprise on AT&T lol. AT&T hasn't even come close to pushing out any large number of HSDPA sites, and only somewhat has HSUPA in affect. Not like it matters though, any AT&T branded phone's firmware is restricting those speeds anyways. Everyone does better in different areas so whatever works for you is best I suppose, I just find it hard to believe you're going to be getting better speeds on AT&T than T-mo.
3mbps down is more than enough to handle any normal stuff you're doing on your phone.

exactly what i was gonna say. my jaw dropped when a canadian is dissing the US carriers haha
theyre all in it to rape our wallets guys...nature of the beast. canada HAS gotten better, except they all still believe in 3 year contracts, which is complete BS imo. BUT the CRTC last year also ruled to implement early contract termination fees cannot exceed a max of $400, it used to be $20 a month for every month remaining in your contract....do the math on that!
all dissing aside, bell still rapes on data overages, rogers doesnt really give two ****s about overages, and telus just likes to charge you whatever the heck they feel like that month.
rogers right now is almost on par with some of our american counterparts, i have a family share plan with them, 800 mins with evenings and wknds start at 4pm, nationwide fav 10 for each device, unltd txt/pic/vid, unltd social networking data, 4gb data shared, call id/vm all that jazz for 128 tax in a month for the two devices. seperatly we used to pay over 160 combined. so its slowly getting better we just need new devices! canadas providers are soooo slooow to get the new toys.

oh god... gtfo we don't need Canada/US battles. Seriously. Canada also has a smaller population than some of our states. A little different.
But you really must be high if you think that the Canadian carriers are treating consumers well... they're in the same boat as the US carriers. Neither of us are in the good carrier position that the European countries are in.

[Competition] TMobile to bring back TRULY UNLIMITED DATA PLAN

You read the title correctly, tmonews and android central. The question is would you switch to Tmobile for 4G HSPA+ data speeds with no caps or overages. I know im seriously thinking about it. The wait for LTE is killing me.
Hmm no caps or overages but..... What about throttling.....
Never mind looks like it will be un throttled.
http://m.androidcentral.com/t-mobile-ready-offer-completely-unlimited-data
No throttling either.
eh, this is how it starts..they offer unlimited then when you download xyz they cripple it to 10KB/s.
after people complain, they will stop throttling then implement a download cap again.
rinse and repeat.
This will be interesting. I'm now doubting how smart it was to sign a new contract with Sprint. With T-Mobile, you have your choice of Nexus and international phones (*cough*Mi2*cough*). Plus, T-Mobile is about to roll out LTE Advance next year. So basically, the plans and pricing should end up similar to Sprint with a very competitive network, but with a much better selection of phones (counting non-T-Mobile-endorsed Nexi and international phones).
I still have confidence in Sprint's NV/LTE upgrade, and I'm plenty satisfied with my S3 for now, so the next 2 years should be good for me, but this news definitely gives one something to ponder.

I'm in Linden (right next to Elizabeth)....I don't get those speeds all the time I just screencapped it this AM and was using for an excuse to share it....
I don't have a problem with Sprint's speed like I used to WHEN I GET IT. The problem is there are a lot of areas where it either connects only to 1X (inside certain buildings, but other carriers don't have this issue so it isn't the building) or times like in this screenshot where it is displaying a good 3G signal but the data doesn't actually work, it seems stuck.
I wouldn't switch to T-Mo. There speeds have gotten faster but nothing has changed to ease my mind as to their coverage when making calls. I remember I tried them for a week and there were places I got NO signal. No data, no voice.

I'm in the exact same boat. I've been with Sprint for over a decade and I was upset when they took away the Premire Program considering I had just qualified Gold status shortly after they came out with it. I let it slide because even though I don't use a ton of network data, I hate the idea of being kept to a limit and/or being throttled once I get there.
Like you, I'll give Sprint a fair chance here. I'm around the Chicago area, so we're in full blown Network Vision upgrade which has been hit and miss. Some places are great, others are atrocious. If their plans pan out, I'll stick with Sprint, but if not, I'll gladly jump to a GSM carrier for a variety of reasons, especially now that they're going to offer truly unlimited data as well.
if this holds true, im out of here with sprint. screw giving them a chance when were paying $10 for premium data. Dial up speeds are not premium data. hell even if we werent paying $10 a month, id still be considering it. I cant even access internet pages in good 3g areas half the time without having to refresh 4-5 times/ Let alone getting any of the apps to refresh. when I was with t-mobile. I always got 6-12mbps. Who cares that its hspa+. I would wait for LTE, but judging by what ive read, Sprint LTE has alot of connectivity issues as well.
If tmobile starts to offer unthrottled unlimited data and it cripples the network, then ill be in the same boat im already in with sprint. So i really cant lose. Paying these prices for this type of service is not acceptable to me.
Im at my wits end with sprint
I tried Tmobile for a week before canceling during the 15 day period. Speeds outdoors were good, but when I entered buildings I lost service completely. If you switch to Tmobile make sure you test indoors. I went from 5 bars at my desk to zero.
T-Mobile service is good in my area. I might consider it. GSM is better than CDMA anyways. I always liked tmobile. But i think im gonna have to wait until my contract is over.

Supposedly, everything unlimited would be $89.99/Mo. Not sure if that's worth the huge ETF for Sprint, but it's tempting for me, especially since I would pare that down a bit by getting as few minutes as possible.

Radio question: LTE or no LTE-capable, MSM8960??

So earlier there was confusion whether the T999 had the processor for LTE or was gimped. We've seen conflicting reports from T-Mobile, who claimed it is gimped and doesn't have LTE, but at Target Mobile, the T-Mobile GS3 is advertised as "4G LTE coming soon," and some think the LTE radio is simply disabled. I did the stat check app, and it did list the MSM8960. Has anyone found out the truth yet? CS from T-Mobile told me on the phone its getting LTE via OTA next year.
I believe this screenshot answers your question.

The T999 does NOT have an LTE radio, or at least it is disabled in microcode (hint: we ain't changing it). Qualcomm can and does have different versions of the S4 family of SOCs identified as an MSM8960. It is more accurate to refer to the SOC as an S4 Plus, which has many different variations, the main differences being modem configurations. The T999 actually has the MSM8260A (using the older terminology), which is basically the MSM8960 without the LTE modem. This can be verified by looking at some getprop parameters. Most software is just going to show you MSM8960, which is the board name/type, etc.

No. Just because it is in a software menu does not mean it is supported in hardware. Try to use it on AT&T LTE, then come back and let us know how that worked out.

What do you mean "disabled in microcode?" If it is that, could an OTA fix it? I've heard about MSM8960 vs MSM8260a but not only have several T-Mobile reps told me over the phone that that phone will get LTE, but one of their live national sales reps told me it will to my face, and I work at a retailer which sells T-Mobile alongside AT&T and Verizon.

I had a Samsung rep at a T-Mobile store (the day I bought the phone) tell me it is LTE capable when T-Mobile flips the switch. So basically take that how you want to. I'm taking it with a grain of salt, but hope that it is true . Would be nice to be one of the first people to actually use T-Mobile's new LTE Advanced Network. Its going to fly!

not to mention the current version of LTE, 3GPP release 8, isn't technically 4G either, so this is awesome if its true. LTE Advanced is supposed to be the first "true" 4G." These conflicting reports are starting to bother me. But either way, even HSPA+ is far, far better than any regular 3G, especially CDMA 3G, which is snail slow.
the jelly been leak has LTE enabled in it so i think its coming with JB. shows it right in choose network mode.
Look up microcode on Google or read the Wikipedia article. That would be a good start. It is how processors are programmed, and no, an OTA will not change it. FYI, I don't know if that is specifically done with this SOC, I am just saying that features (seemingly hardware features to end users) can be changed with microcode. It may just not have the actual silicon. I don't know. Either way, from our perspective, it doesn't have an LTE radio.
The T-Mobile reps are wrong, at least for the phone that was just released. Simple as that. Now, there could be a hardware version update, or subsequent newer model released with the LTE radio. Certainly is possible, though it would likely have a slightly different model number, or be easily identifiable some other way.
I know you guys want the T999 to have an LTE radio. But, no matter how much you want it, that won't change the facts. The phone we have now doesn't have it. It's just one of those things that we will have to wait and see. Then we can come back and say, told you so. In fact, there is a JB update out now for the T999. Why doesn't someone flash that and try it out? Seriously, out of all the T999 phones sold, do you know ANYONE using LTE on it, whether on AT&T or elsewhere? If you do, please tell him/her to speak up. Think about it. Surely someone on these boards is an AT&T customer with a T999. It's not going to be "enabled" with an OTA...

The other person had a screenshot of this too. Just because it's there doesn't mean the hardware supports it. Why would it come with Jellybean when T-Mobile's LTE network won't even be out for months, maybe even a full year at the rate their refarming is going? And why would it even be ENABLED?
Also, everyone needs to STOP LISTENING to reps. Reps don't know anything more than most people who can use Google.

This has certainly been my experience, and is not limited to just T-Mobile. I had one rep tell me with a straight face that the OS on a Galaxy S Blaze 4G was not in fact Android, but rather a custom OS and skin designed by Samsung...lol Yeah...sort of... And there was the time that one swore up and down that GSM (2G old school GSM, not UMTS/HSPA) was superior to CDMA...for reasons he could not possibly explain except to say that...well it must be better since the rest of the world uses it.
Don't get me wrong, I know there are some bright and knowledgeable reps working for T-Mobile and others.

Of course there are, but by and by, most reps don't know **** about anything.
could it be that T-Mobile's version of LTE Advanced will be compatible with whatever is inside the T999? This isn't just one rep who's told me its gonna have LTE, but several both live and on the phone.

No. It just isn't going to happen, and their LTE Advanced network is a long time away.
If several people live and on the phone told you to jump off of a bridge, would you do it? Not to mention the fact that most of their phone reps are outsourced call centers that also know nothing.
not sure if it matters but a friend of mine used his upgrade to get the s3 on att. now I'm not sure what they claim or if there phone is different than out tmob version but i can say that i did hold his phone and ran a speed test while the icon in the status bar showed LTE, it maxed at about 36meg d/l. later that night at one of our other friends house the icon showed 4G so i ran speedtest again and it stayed between 11meg to about 18meg. reading one of the above comments about the att version just got me thinking about that so i figured id tell what ive seen hoping it would help in any way

No. Whatever it is inside the T999 is not LTE. So, no version of LTE will be compatible with it. I understand optimism, but wow... No joke, the T-Mobile Galaxy S3 does not have LTE. I wouldn't be so disappointed though since HSPA is no slouch and still has a bit of room to grow. I actually think the approach T-Mobile took with their network advancements makes a lot of sense. Not saying it is the best marketing strategy.
Seriously, there are people on this forum that have the T999 on AT&T. No LTE. Just find them, ask them, confirm. And no, it is not coming in an OTA. It will only come in a different version of the phone (quite possible). The phone you have in your hand now will not magically be updated to LTE. While UMTS/HSPA and LTE are actually not as different as most may think (same standards family, both decedents of GSM), they are still different and require specific hardware. There are technical differences.
FYI, the AT&T version of the phone IS different than the T999, that's why he gets LTE.
To the guy that took a screenshot. Look! It says CDMA! I can use this on Sprint and Verizon then right?!?!?!?

After 20 years on ATT, first time switch to Sprint, very bad

So after almost 20 years on ATT, have never changed providers, multiple models and makes of phones on ATT and never had a signal issue, outages yes, due to storms but once service back, no complaints
Made the switch for the 1st time over to Sprint, Samsung Galaxy S3 16GB (for some reason the automated system recognizes phones as 32GB).
After 48 hours on Sprint, horrible horrible horrible voice quality issues (ATT has quad band coverage in area, both 3G and 4G) and despite phone being a 4G, can only see 3G icon lit, anywhere within 50 miles of home. I am paying a surcharge of 10.00 extra for 4G for multiple phones, have yet to see the service. Yes, Sprint promised it would work.
Purchased legitimate (yes I know I can root using qbking videos and Team Epic files) wifi hotspot to tether, keeps dropping connection every few minutes where ATT tether was flawless.
Sprint says "we are working on new towers, service will improve, you have 14 days to return phones are we will refund or replace..."
Sigh.
It isn't a $10 4g fee
Its a premium data fee A.K.A. unlimited 3g/4g/roaming where available
Use s4gru.com to see when you will get lte
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Emperor using psycommu
Yes, the $10 fee was originally for wimax 4G, but after people complained Sprint reworded it as "premium data". Now Even smart phones that only have 3G get this charge.
Add far as voice service, yes Sprint is in the middle of their network vision improvements so ymmv, I have great voice service.
Seems you didn't do enough research before you switched to Sprint and went off the sales pitch the person gave you. Sales people in general will say just about anything to make the sale and get the commission.

The good news is your an educated consumer and you already know you have 14 days to return everything and cancel service and go back to ATT.

1. The GS3 is an LTE phone, not a 4G phone. So if they havent turned on LTE in your area, then yeah no duh you wont get it.
2. You are paying $10 a month for data, not specifically 4G. Yes its BS but deal with it, every company has the charge but in different words.
3. If its not working, complain that you get no service and return it for a refund. You have 14 days.

My question is, do you even know what you are doing? Did you read ANYTHING about the phone or how it works, did you research the service quality in your area before switching?
Where are you located? I can understand your frustration, it's hard for me to believe that you are saying that ATT voice is clearer than Sprints
I mean I guess if you're roaming and on another tower not owned by Sprint
I'm going to guess your location is your major problem, do you live in a rural area? Sprint works really well in Metro areas, not so much in the rural areas although they are broadening their coverage to these type of areas.
In my opinion, CDMA technology has sharper voice than GSM
Too bad you are experiencing this type of issue.
so you are at the age of 38-40 years old?

If it saves you a year of misery, Sprint's stated *GOAL* for network vision is a pathetic 6 mbps. Compare that *goal* to what people you know are getting with AT&T, Verizon, and even T-mobile *today*, and decide for yourself whether Sprint is even worth bothering with.
Frankly, I'm through with Sprint. If it weren't for the Galaxy Note 2 tantalizing me on or before 10/15, I'd have probably gone to the AT&T store today and bought a GS3 instead. In fact, if they announce a release date after that, I'll just get the S3, becase I hate my unflashable Photon with a passion, and can't replace it with a Sprint S3 because *then* I'd have no usable data service (wimax works ok here, but no LTE yet, and EVDO here has been 6 to ~80kbps down lately. I had faster 1xRTT 5 years ago).

i been telling people to stay clear from sprint for months. I will admit it's bad if your coming from a carrier with usable internet pretty much everyone except Sprint, it will be hard adjusting. I used 8 gigs a month at T-Mobile and with sprint I'm lucky to crack 500 mb. I will be heading back to T-Mobile after dec lesson well learned if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Exactly. It's just about stable enough in Dallas that I have ditched my AT&T Note and strictly carry my Sprint phone. Att and Verizon speeds are comparable. Voice quality in this market is unmatched. Sprint wins hands down. whoopdy doo...Tmobile now has unlimited...and is garbage here in big D.
The only one here in the market that may have a competitive edge is Metro with voice over LTE...though their unlImIted data, speeds are capped at 5mbps
I'm not even going to get into the whole grandfathered data on Att being throttled and the new share plans pricing structure being absurd.

I seriously dont understand how people complain about sprint. Its probably 25-35% cheaper compared to every other contract carrier...and was one of the first contract carriers to offer unlimited data, not sure if it still is. I get many discounts off my bill simply because I have state farm insurance and other various memberships. I had verizon for YEARS, switched to sprint, could hardly tell the difference. 90% of the time its all in your head.

LTE is 4g....
And because sometimes people are honest? If everyone just stole it, Sprint would be much more likely to figure out a way to block it. If you're going to actually use it regularly I think people should pay for it.

I was under the impression that 6mbps was their goal for their average speeds. People with Sprint LTE right now are posting 30 mbps speeds. When I had Verizon I would get 5 mbps on LTE at home, where I had low signal, and 25 to 30 at work, where I had excellent signal. There's a huge difference when talking between peak and average speeds.

AT&T vs Sprint for Note 2

I am looking to purchase the Note 2 and I have the option of Sprint or AT&T, is there any real benefit of one carrier vs the other for this particular phone?

Im pretty sure the phones are the exact same but with at&t your service may be better depending on your location. Sprint is behind on 4g and 4g lte coverage. Sprint has unlimited data and I don't think at&t offers that. So if I were you I would ask friends that live in your area to get their opinions or even google search and see if you can find any forums that tell about at&t coverage in your area. Coverage is exactly what you should look at.
We have an att note 2 and a sprint note 2....equally fantastic. Coverage in my area is pretty much the same here, the wife just wants to stick with att since she has had them so long.
If one didnt have unlimited on att ...I would def look towards sprint
Is att still throttling after 5gb of use? Thats a huge factor on why I gave up my line
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Since AT&T throttles all unlimited data plans (except those that were grandfathered in) past 5gb/mo. But Sprint doesn't yet have the extensive LTE coverage that AT&T does. If you live in an area where Sprint has rolled out its 4G LTE network, or predominantly use Wifi, I'd suggest Sprint. On the other hand, if Sprint only has 3G in your home zone and you can't rely on wifi consistently when you need the higher speeds, AT&T may be the way to go. I've been with Sprint for nearly 15 years and don't mind waiting for their LTE network. (tho I certainly hope for sooner rather than later) For me, the bandwidth throttling on downloads over the 5GB/mo is a deal breaker. I typically use 25+GB/mo on my phone and Sprint never throttles by bandwidth.
* I'm Rick James, *****! *
I can confirm no throttling by Sprint. Since getting the GN2, I''m using over 50GB of data per month. It's up from the 25GB or more when I had the Evo 4G and used 3G almost exclusive; I had access to WiMax if I went to certain towns. I live in area LTE, but it's not everywhere, so I bounce between both all the time.
The other big difference, Sprint is CDMA and has the simcard built in. ATT is GMA, which is used world wide. ATT may not have the simcard build in, and thus world travel friendly. Something to consider if you plan on traveling.
Beyond that, I would just look at your data usages, carrier coverage, and reliability.
Lastly, you do realize we're going to be bias to Sprint.

A slight correction here, the Sprint GN2 can be used "worldwide," but only in certain areas I believe. And you'll be paying out the ass for the service, as you cannot put a cheapy sim in there, you have to pay for Sprint's world service. Sucks
So yes if travel is something that you need to do with your GN2, ATT may be the better carrier. But you'll probably save a good $30 a month with Sprint, which is more than enough to cover a cheap burner phone purchase for when you're traveling. Keep the note on ya for wifi connectivity, use the burner for phone calls, save money
the above is correct that the phone as some kind of GSM radio in it. And that you pay a mighty fee to use it too. I wasn't thinking about that when I wrote my post. I know a lot people prefer to just sim card swap and be able to use the local, and cheap, service. Also, GSM is used workd wide. Whereas, CDMA is not. Some carriers in the USA used. There are a couple others carriers outside the USA, but they're far and few.
If you can hold out for Sprint LTE to get some decent nationwide coverage, go with Sprint. Unlimited data is CRUCIAL. 3G is manageable for now.
I would check with speedtest on an att and Sprint phone. Also check Sprint 4g lte coverage in your area. If they have it or are on list to get it then choose Sprint. Sprint keeps improving every week. But if it looks like Sprint won't be good for a while in your area and att is already good and you don't mind higher prices and tiered data then choose att.

If you have unlimited At&T right now then by all means don't switch to sprint. My friend has a grandfathered at&t plan and im really jealous. Everywhere in texas that I actually have lte his speed test beats mine 15 mbs or more. His has 4g lte EVERYWHERE. I can't speak on behalf of the entire United States but as for Texas, you should go with at&t if you have unlimited.

What's the coverage like in your area? How much data do you use? How much are you willing to pay?
If you do have "unlimited" grandfathered data, it is still throttled after a couple gigs, meaning you'd likely be better off with Sprint if they have the coverage.
Regarding price, Sprint is usually cheaper for family plans, but not necessarily for individuals.
