[How-To] Update to Official GPE Android 5.0 UDNL3 (12-12-2014) - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I am sure you will soon begin seeing some Custom ROM's based on today's GPE 5.0 release. In the meantime here is a method to start enjoying 100% Stock GPE 5.0 now!
Instructions:
1. I recommend that you use the latest TWRP v2.8.4.0.
2. Perform and Advanced Wipe and wipe "Dalvick Cache", "System", "Data", and "Cache."
3. Flash the I9505GUEUDNL3_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.zip
4. Last, press "Home" then press "Reboot," reboot into "Download Mode" and flash the M919_NK2_Stock_Modem+Bootloader.tar.md5 in Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v.3.09+). Done!
Tip: For blazing fast speed turn off animations from developer options and reboot.
Notes:
1. 5.0 seems to require the 4.4.4 modem/non-hlos otherwise security settings will force close. Therefore as of 12/14 the above process will also update your modem/non-hlos + bootloader to NK2(4.4.4) in order to ensure a consistent user experience.
2. The NK2 modem may not stick on your first attempt when flashing the modem + bootloader file in Odin. Should that happen re-flash the file until it sticks.
Alternative Odin Method:
1. Extract the I9505G_UDNL3_GPE_5.0_for_M919.tar and flash in Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
2. Power down and boot into stock recovery and perform a factory data reset. Done!
Notes:
1. This is a pre-rooted "All-in-One" Odin package which will update your System and Kernel to 100% stock GPE 5.0 and your Modem, Non-hlos, Recovery, and Bootloader to NK2.
2. The NK2 modem may not stick on the first attempt causing security settings to force close. If that happens flash the M919_NK2_Stock_Modem+Bootloader.tar.md5 until it sticks.

Are you referring to data drops without a knox bootloader? I'm assuming that will likely be an issue with this ROM but I'm on a knox BL and have not experienced any issues. As for warranty my warranty was void a long time ago so don't know. Others will have to chime in on that.

Knox is dependent on which Android version of TouchWiz you're running. It is on 4.3 and 4.4.2. If you are on TouchWiz 4.2.2, you can flash this rom without dealing with any of the Knox warranty crap at all.
EDIT: So far it works, but I get a FC on Settings everytime I access Security. If I remember correctly, it can be fixed if keystore.msm8960.so is deleted in /system/lib/hw

Yes, deleting the keystore file solves that issue. I will upload a new version of the ROM without that file. Thanks for the heads-up!

No, the ROM only flashes system and kernel. I have not tested the NE3 modem on our device but the NB4 modem and non-hlos work just fine with this ROM.

This is a great Rom. I've been using it for a 2 days now and have 0 problems. why not move it to S4 Android Development?

Thanks, glad to hear it's working well.
And since I kept it completely stock I'm not sure it meets the criteria to be in the development section. Anyway I put it together for my own use and just put it out there in case anyone wanted to try it out. Enjoy

[Q] Tmobile update on stock rooted rom

Can I let the Tmobile Update download and flash if I am rooted on the stock ROM and have Clockwork recovery? I would use ota root keeper to disable root also before the update.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
When it is rooted even if you try to use the OTA update it won't let you, while rooted, you could alternatively flash the update via ODIN w/ root support. Or try some of the sweet ROMs available , the reason I switched to a custom ROM because I was going to have to erase my phone anyway if I wanted to update, so I thought why not just try a custom ROM?
I use LiquidSmoothRC7, but if you want a more stock feel with touchwiz you can try Wicked, Wicked stays true to the "official stock ROMs" and just adds roots and tweaks the ROM to make it as stable as possible
If you are rooted, with a custom recovery, there is absolutely no reason for you to be playing around with Odin or OTAs... your updates are available in the development section

Actually there is. There are 10 partitions rewritten with the Odin and OTA update. Only 5 get rewritten if you flash via custom recovery, so you don't get the full update.

go to doc's thread, flash his firmware update, reboot, then flash whatever JB ROM you desire. there is absolutely no need to ODIN your phone with the OTA fw, resetting your device completely. you just need to make sure you flash the latest firmware first before you flash a ROM that is based off the latest OTA

Some of those 10 partitions that are getting rewritten are... for one, your recovery... so that makes 9 actually...
My point is, and I'm not trying to be argumentative in any way, merely objective, is that unless it is reformatting the ext4 partition to new file structure (for example) there should be no need to do this. I suppose I would ask somebody to define in depth "rewritten" and how exactly this is being done and why. Every single update we have had since the release of this device I have not once updated my own device with odin merely to put it back to stock. And I have run into zero issues. Seems like a waste of time to me unless there is something highly critical being restructured entirely. In the end, its all the same disk, and disk size for any given partition.

If you are on LH2, with that same baseband, I would go ahead and update your baseband via docs packaged update in his thread, and just reboot, then move on to the jelly bean updates. Do a factory reset through recovery before you flash the JB ROM tho since you are coming from a completely different version of android.

If you want to avoid all the weird miscellaneous problems listed in the Q&A forum, update using Odin and the rooted rom in Docs' thread. If you choose not to use Odin do not be surprised if odd things happen.
Just stating my experience, I was rooted stock ics and ran the ota update. I was able to update, keep root and ran stock jelly bean without any problems at all.
Now I am running frosty jelly and still no problems at all. I am not saying for you to do it (dont want anyone blaming me) just stating that it can be done. Do whats most comfortable for you.

Again looking for some technical clarity here. Haven't had a single issue myself. With anything. And I have not factory odined my device once since I got it. It is not critical to do this, otherwise I would be suffering from "weird miscellaneous problems"
Hopin doc can jump in here and set me straight if I am wrong, but it seems to me you will be fine just updating your radios and then moving to the latest build (4.1.1) as long as you clear data before flashing your ROM of choice

You could very well be correct. Not trying to debate you.
but....I am seeing thread after thread of issues. Based on experience I suggest using the full proof method. I have updated many phones using many different methods and never have problems, but apparently many have had issues.
I also hope Doc chimes in on this thread.

If I understand the process correctly
ODIN flashes the entire phone OS like the kernel, Rom, baseband, etc
Using recovery to flash only updates the Rom,recovery, boot, kernel

The file used to flash with Odin is much larger because it is a complete rom. The OTA is a patch that attempts to patch and modify existing files.
I basically said that on the last post not the one you quoted

Thanks I will try an flash over the MJ2 bootloader and modem.
And as soon as I post these system image based ROMs, I figure out the problem with the "normal" directory based ROMs we all know and love.
Seems Samsung added some scripts to prevent us from having fun (I told you it was a permission thing loser ).
I don't know what these scripts do specifically because they are encrypted, but we all know what they are intended to do.
These are the scripts found in /system/etc:
boot_fixup
selinux_restore
Attached is a pic of my deodexed file system.
I will test this for a little while, then upload. :good:

Can't wait to be off work and give this a shot on mj2 boot loader and modem. Thank you for the hard work and glad to see you guys figuring this out.
If WiFi isn't working on mj2 boot loader and modem for people just a thought but maybe the mj2 kernel with the ROM could work a little magic.
Update
Good News: Removing these files allows the deodexed ROM to boot.
boot_fixup
selinux_restore
Bad News: No wifi, data, or IMEI.
Good News: Flashing one of the ROMs in the OP restores wifi, data, and IMEI.
Bad News: selinux_restore seems to be the bad actor in terms of not letting the ROM boot and preventing all data usage.
Bad News: selinux_restore is encrypted, which prevents us from knowing what it does.
Good News: Lots of good devs and power users for this device. We'll get things fixed proper.
I'll upload the deodexed debloat version as well as the two files mentioned above to give everyone a chance to play.

Both odexed versions work perfectly. If you read the first post that you quoted you will see that the deodexed version is till a WIP. It works fine, except for the no wifi and data thing.
I can't speak authoritatively about bootloader requirements because I have the official bootloader from the OTA. But most likely you will need a 4.3 bootloader and radio for everything to work as with the 4.3 leak. The biggest risk is that something won't work properly (aside from the normal risks associated with flashing any ROM). If that's the case you just restore a backup or reflash whatever ROM you were on before.

Thanks for the update loser, so for flashing the above we require to be on the updated bootloader/Firmware? I don't want to loose the ability to flash older 4.1.2 but as the same time want to use 4.3. LOL

You can flash it on the 4.1.2 bootloader but things like wifi probably won't work until you upgrade. I haven't tested this, but you should be able to flash 4.1.2 roms on the 4.3 bootloader, but once again, it might break things like wifi. I don't think any of the 4.1.2 roms include bootloaders so you should be fine.
I think there's some confusion about the term "downgrading". It's strictly bootloaders that you can't downgrade. So if you want to go back to stock, DON"T flash the 4.1.1 stock tar, but if you want to use 4.1.2 roms, you can. You can mess with the system and boot partitions without causing issues. Not sure why people want to go back to 4.1.2 though, as 4.3 is solid as is, let alone all of the modding that's about to happen.

These steps should provide you with a 100% KNOX free setup so you can continue to keep root and flash new ROMs to your heart's content! THIS GUIDE WILL ONLY WORK FOR YOU IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY UPDATED TO 4.3 USING THE OTA UPDATE AND ARE STILL USING THE 4.2 BOOTLOADER. IF YOU HAVE THE NEW BOOTLOADER THAT READS "KNOX WARRANTY" THEN THIS WILL NOT WORK FOR YOU. STANDARD DISCLAIMER APPLIES! YOU KNOW THIS CAN BREAK YOUR PHONE, THERE ARE PLENTY OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD NO ISSUES, THERE ARE SOME WHO HAVE. THIS IS A RISK YOU, AND YOU ALONE TAKE, I HAVE NOT HELD A GUN TO YOUR HEAD AND TOLD YOU TO FOLLOW THESE STEPS.

Welcome one and all to my first ever guide post. I'm going to be as straightforward as I can while trying to be as helpful as I can with the information provided, if I've missed anything, please do not hesitate to let me know!
Most of these steps are pretty standard, so I'll just run through them in a short list here and then elaborate below where needed.
SETUP
1. HAVE A ROOTED S4 4.2, with CWM or TWRP installed already
2. Download ODIN (It is NOT RECOMMENDED to use Mobile ODIN for the ODIN steps, Successful report of using Mobile Odin to flash the baseband. Thanks, @tylerholbrook! (It has been mentioned that Mobile ODIN can mess things up, so use it at your own risk!) (post) Linux Heimdall has been confirmed. Thanks, @Sym_Link! (post) Mac Heimdall untested, anyone want to try and provide findings?)
3. Download this Radio package
4. Download a kernel, I use KToonsez (Just in case)
STEPS
1. Boot into Recovery, make a FULL BACKUP of your phone before you proceed!
2. Make sure you followed step 1, verify your new backup by successfully restoring it and rebooting into the phone.
3A. Boot the phone into download mode, using ODIN (any version from the package download linked above) flash the Radio_UVUAMDL.tar.md5 as instructed in the Radio thread (Use Phone(CP) on ODIN) -- This step appears to be optional. I would recommend doing it if you're coming from another radio Thanks, @roadster92 (post) -- If you DO perform this step, IMMEDIATELY reboot into download mode, do NOT boot into recovery or normal modes, proceed immediately with step 3B. Thanks, @lordcheeto03 (post)
3B. Reboot the phone into download mode, using ODIN flash the modem.bin as instructed in the Radio thread (Use Phone(CP) on ODIN) -- This step is most certainly needed, do not skip this step at all, otherwise your 4.3 or 4.4 with the MDL baseband is gonna have a bad time.
4. Boot the phone normally, confirm your baseband version has upgraded to MK2 before proceeding, don't upgrade to 4.3 ROM until it shows in Settings->About->Phone! (If it hasn't upgraded, follow the instructions on the Radio thread twice)
5. Once you've confirmed your baseband upgrade, reboot into recovery and upgrade to any 4.3 or 4.4 ROM on the forums (make sure it's KNOX Free), follow any procedures the new ROM requires you follow to complete installation.
6. Reboot and test your data, if you're still experiencing data drops or slow wifi, try flashing a new Kernel like the one linked in order to resolve. I have success with KToonsez and recommend it for this purpose. (WiFi is faster than I've ever seen it before with this radio+kernel, connects almost instantly now where it used to drag for up to a minute before connecting)
7. ENJOY!
NOTES
I took a shortcut, I already had the ROM with the Kernel installed at one point but couldn't deal with the data dropping so I just made a backup and restored back to 4.2.2 for my sanity. After installing the new radio, I was able to restore my backup of the 4.3 ROM I use (GoldenEye 9.0.1 MJ5), and all was well. The provided steps should approximate getting to this same point, however, if it's discovered there are any extra steps required, please reply to this thread and then PM me as well with the information so I can update OP.
Any Kernel that is 4.3 should work perfectly fine to match to the radio, 4.2.x kernels still interact slowly with the radio/wifi despite the upgrade. I haven't experienced a data drop-out since upgrading the radio and restoring my previous 4.3 backup, and I go through a 'large' (half-mile or so) dead-zone and was streaming netflix without a single hiccup, normally Pandora would even crash.
HOW THIS WORKS
I've seen a LOT of people complaining that this won't work, there's still KNOX, but I think they're confused and thinking we're talking about a full ODIN or OTA flash of 4.3, when we're not. We're talking about picking out the parts of 4.3 that we want and need and combining them with our MDL setup. Here's what you should end up with if you follow these instructions accordingly.
MDL (4.2) Bootloader (KNOX-Free)
MK2 (4.3) Baseband (KNOX-Free)
MDL (4.2) LTE radio (KNOX-Free)
MK2 (4.3) ROM (Something from XDA that has KNOX stripped out) (KNOX-Free)
This amalgamation of components comes together in order to provide us with the baseband we so desperately needed in order to correct the loss of audio and data drop-outs we experienced on 4.3 ROMs with the MDL (4.2) Baseband, keeping the KNOX-Free MDL LTE radio (the MK2 LTE radio appears to have ties into the KNOX bootloader, flashing it without the bootloader ends up with NO data at all). This keeps us free of tripping the KNOX WARRANTY "eFuse" because our bootloaders are still MDL without KNOX. I hope this clarifies for those doubters.
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS
Reports of tethering not working.
Reports of data still being dropped on deep-sleep.
Reports of data dropping while on a call (you should at least get 3G).
THANKS
Thanks go out to @ktoonsez for his kernel, and @LuigiBull23 for maintaining the thread. @shiamatsu for his radio thread with the steps to get MK2 baseband + MDL LTE radio installed which was key to keeping solid data and keeping sound on phone calls. @j_r0dd for the 4.3 modem, @mrvirginia for the 4.2.2 modem, and the devs over at the i9505 section for figuring out the trick that shiamatsu summarized for us. And @daerragh for maintaining the ODIN thread.

REQUESTING YOUR FEEDBACK
I'd like to request everyone's help in getting feedback on working ROM & Kernel combinations so we can try to figure out why some people are still having problems while others are not. There's more reports of failures than successes, but, the typical trend is that people don't bother to post at all if everything works, only to either complain or request further assistance when something is broken. Now, I'm requesting your feedback either way. Once you've completed your radio and ROM flash according to these steps, go to your Settings->More->About device, scroll all the way to the bottom and screenshot your Model, Android version, Baseband version, Kernel version, Build number, and SELinux status. Please provide a small blurb after the image explaining any trouble you may be having or if everything is working perfectly fine. If your status changes shortly after your initial post (within 3-4 days), just edit and update your original reply. Otherwise if it's been a week and it's a page or two later, just post a new reply so we can see the freshest feedback. I NEED YOUR HELP WITH THIS, EVERYONE'S HELP. WHILE WE'RE MAKING GREAT STRIDES FORWARD, WE'RE STILL NOT COMPLETELY OUT OF THE WOODS HERE. YOUR FEEDBACK IS IMPORTANT, THINK OF HOW MUCH INFORMATION OTHER XDA MEMBERS HAVE SHARED WITH YOU, JUST SHARE THIS LITTLE BIT AND PAY IT FORWARD, PLEASE!
Mods: Formally requesting a sticky once I get some reports of working phones.
Users: Requesting you post your results!
So is this what you would do if you wanted to keep root? And if you didn't want root, you'd just update it through kies?

KNOX free means that you won't need to install the new bootloader, which includes a new "KNOX counter" that instantly breaks your warranty the moment you root or attempt to downgrade.

You can TRY Mobile Odin, or Heimdall if you have it, however, I wouldn't recommend Mobile Odin as we're dealing with radios here, and I don't think you can flash just the modem.bin without it being .tar'd, if you want to risk it, go for it, but no guarantee. Let us know!

I never could figure out heimdall lol. I have read people mobile odin'd. I guess 4.3 isn't that necessary for me for now until there's more support. Patience is bliss. Actually the first time new stuff rolls out and I don't immediately start flashing lol. Thanks though

Not a problem!
Just borrow somebody's computer, or get Parallels or Oracle VM and set up a windows machine you can mod your phone with safely.
I would like to see somebody make an ODIN flashable TAR file with the modified radio setup, plus a KNOX-free, debloated copy of the official release that we can just use. I might have to embark on this journey.
Thanks will try this tonight

If you could do that, it would be awesome as I'm sure it'll be helpful for other Mac users.
I was on Wicked V8 with MDL boot loader and base bands.
I used Mobile Odin and flashed the new MK2 GSM radio (modem.bin)
After that flashed the new knox free 4.3 rom and Ktoonsez 4.3 Kernel.
Everything works fine.

I thought that might be the case if the device is still totally MDL (ie never took the OTA), but I asked someone this and he said that both Odin flashes were necessary no matter what. And this dude is quite accomplished. So... I'm going to keep on reading before I do anything I suppose.
Thanks for this guide, great stuff.

Upgrading to T-Mobile 4.3 via OTA

Just checked for updates as described in other threads and it found the latest 4.3 update. I have read both positive and negative responses to the update. Some found things they used in 4.1.2 that are being taken away. Some like the new features in 4.3. It will vary from person to person whether the ROM is better for them or not. Fact is, all devices (current and future) are moving forward.
Should I just install the update? Should I make a copy of my current setup with one of the recoveries, then odin back, and run triangle away?
Strange. I went ahead and updated. Even after doing two complete resets, I still have SU app from 4.1.2. I guess it carried the program during the upgrade process?

it basically dirty flashed the new update over your 4.1.2. I honestly didn't care much about the KNOX boot loader since my warranty is already over. but, I find not having to flash devil kernel so much easier w/ less lag.

Hopefully someone will develop something that resets the KNOX counter. Triangle worked for 4.1.2, but does not work in 4.3 for me.
BTW, what 4.3 ROMs do you like, since we have the new bootloader? I just installed TWRP and trying to decide on a ROM.

I am installing DN3 and am in their installer. It asks me whether I want the N7105 version... or the i317 or i317M. I read to install the ATT version, but what's the difference in the M and non-M version?
So I have a question I hqvent been on in a while and last I checked the newest update came with a locked bootloader. I know it did for the s3. I liked the newest software on the s3 but I jus5 cant stand all that bloat and not having full control of my phone. That s3 was killing me. I just got my note2 back from samsung with a nice new screen and of coure they forgot to send the spen with it. Not that I use the stupid thing anyway but still come on. Anyway is the bootloader locked on this one also and how hard is that to get around?

theyre for different companies i believe. as how ours (T889) also has a T889v ( i think thats the right letter) version as its for a different conpany. I installed using the ATT one. there's really no difference because you're just going to flash a tmobile modem over it.

yes the boot loader is locked. I don't believe there's a workaround it yet. but I'm even sure. you can scroll around through the threads and see if there is. what I did was just update it anyways and tripped my KNOX boot loader to ox1. I didn't have warranty anyways so I'm not tripping over it. and then I just rooted it, flashed cwm and started to flash ROMs.

Thank you. So is the root process the same? Usually i flash twrp with odin then install su permissions then I flash away. Or do I have to use another method? Really all I want is the modem software so I could just wait till someone pulls it out they usually do. I always liked c heckin out the latest stock rom but always changed back to aokp.

I wrote instructions on how I rooted. there could be other methods to. this is easiest for me! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2562994
if you're going to end up on aokp, you should just stay on the 4.1.2 boot loader. the update to me is really only for TW roms because the stock ROMs are working just fine w/o the new boot loader.

[ROM][NDC][STOCK][4.4.2][KITKAT][ROOTED][ODEXED/DEODEXED]- Virgin Mobile/Boost Mobile

STOP!!! PLEASE READ!!! Before you flash this zip file in recovery, you MUST FIRST flash either the NDC tar(see below for link),
or the ND8 tar, in order to obtain the KK bootloader and modem. If you flash this directly over JellyBean bootloader, you WILL brick!!
Alright folks, here we go again. Just as the title says, this is the NDC 4.4.2 Kit Kat update for Boost/VM in flashable zip.
Stock, rooted, busybox, zipaligned, odex or deodex. That’s it. Pretty basic. More to come in the future, but this should be enough
to keep you busy for awhile. Enjoy!
Notes: PLEASE READ!
1. In order for this to work, you need to flash the NDC tar first! Flashing the tar will/should not wipe your data.
2. And yes, NDC tar does come with Knox, so if you flash the tar, you have Knox. And if you flash CWM via Odin to flash this,
it WILL trip Knox, thus voiding your warranty.
3. This MAY cause you to lose your modem, but not to fear, we got you covered.

This is from jmatherly11, over at Android Forums, who found a good way to get rid of the "Samsung" title in the drop down, as well as some other stuff.
For those of you that are seeing "Samsung" in the pull down menu as well as the network type displaying "Samsung" there is a fix in the PlayStore, its called "Refresh Customization" by Samsung MNO Labs. This will factory reset your phone after you download select the first option called "Refresh Customization Opt1," if it is unsuccessful try "Opt2." This fixed my phone after the KitKat upgrade and if your like me and use Sensorly to map Sprint's network it will not correctly map the info because Sensorly thinks you on a network called "Samsung."
This app was designed for Samsung Galaxy devices ONLY running on Sprint's networks. If a Samsung device's initial customization settings has been lost due to the system upgrade to the KitKat platform then this is your fix. This also repairs the "My Account" app that displays "MobileZone."
Also my device is completely stock on 4.4 so for those of you that are rooted I have no idea if this will work.

awesome work JD, I don't post a lot because I do a lot of reading and I find I do not usually have to post because if you do your research everything is covered. But this one has me concerned as it seems a little out of my league. I do not think I am a noob but, not far past. Can't I just flash that car and then the zip using the custom recovery I already have? It's business as usual right? Just flash those items in the order and then the new modem and I'm good to go? And if I have to revert back to back up will I be able to do that? Will I be able to revert back to 4.3? Just a little nervous and thank you for all of your hard work and answering my question in advance. Question 1: Do you have to use Odin?
Answer: You'll need to be on the ND8 or NDC bootloader for this to work. When he says you have to use Odin, he means for flashing the stock tar for either the Sprint ND8 or the Boost/Virgin NDC ROMs. The tar files can't be flashed from recovery and please don't try to use Mobile Odin, as it doesn't like ND8/NDC.
Question 2: Can you revert back to 4.3?
Answer: You can revert to 4.3 insomuch as using a 4.3 ROM. You can either flash a 4.3 zip from recovery or restore a CWM/TWRP/etc. backup . You will not be able to revert your modem or bootloader to anything prior to ND8 after flashing the ND8/NDC bootloader. It just doesn't work.
Hope that helps.

Most notice no change but you may have better reception with the NDC modem, no guarantees. They are about the same, just carrier specific. You can always flash back to ND8 tar if you do decide to try it, just fyi.
