Im looking to buy a wireless portable (mid range portable and too tiny) speaker. Which one do you guys suggest in terms of sound quality (ofcourse), pricing and latest connectivity options (Wi-Fi, NFC)?
Found three selections: Bose Soundtouch 20, Sonos Play 5 and Sony SRSX7
I have personal experience with two models: X-mini II and JBL Micro wireless. I didn't own them, but they were sold as iphone accessories where I used to work. Both are worth the money, X-mini is louder and with a little bit distorted sound/bass when at full volume, while the JBL is somewhat more cultivated and clearer.
But overall the X-mini was sold 3:1 vs the JBL. You can also chain the x-minis

Thanks. I checked them out but they are smaller than what im looking for.
The size of Bose Soundtouch 20 is fine by me. Im not looking for a pocket portable, but more like something that can sit on your pc desk or bed table without occupying much space and looking modern.But it seems the three devices i mentioned in earlier post are the only ones with all latest connectivity options. The JBL authentics L8 looks great too, but pricey. When i went shopping i saw a lot of portable speakers which i couldn't recognize so i had to come home and check online what the heck is going on in the portable speaker world. It seems most portable speakers are bluetooth ones only, and does not have Wifi, NFC, etc.
So you are ideally looking for an optionally battery powered docking station with speakers

The Libratone live also good enough as the Bose Soundtouch 20.
And then i came across the sound bar types which comes with wifi, DLNA, etc, and i wonder how is the sound performance in comparison.

Every review on the web shows the same. This phone simply wasn't packaged with some...it's likely that you'll already have some anyways or you'll eventually get a better pair than they would have ever packaged.
You're probably right but I wanted to test out the FM Radio real quick and low and behold...
The no headphones is surprising, but with a retail cost of 450.00, you can't expect much. I would rather pay less and skip the headphones and mini hdmi cable than pay for them and not use them. I like the headphones I already own. Bundled headphones generally suck anyways. At least my iphone headphones suck that is.

I use super cheap OEM blackberry headphones I get off ebay for like $3 a pair. As far as comfort and sound quality go they seem way better than the other super cheap and kinda nice headphones I have
There's better IEM headphones than any of the V-Moda models for less $ or about the same price imo... MEElectronics M9P, Nuforce NE-7M, Maximo iP-HS5, etc. Head-Fi.org is a great resource for all things headphones. I just bought the MEElec M9P last week and I've been trying 'em out today, I got 'em for $22 w/S&H but I think they went back up in price to $35 (the others are around $50).
I think they're a noticeable step up in quality from the other mic-less IEMs I already had, Sennheiser CX300 and JVC HA-FX34 Marshmallows... Those two are fairly common at retail stores so if you've ever owned either of them you have a fairly good point of reference.
After reading a few threads at HF I ended up w/the MEElec because of the relative SQ to price, and the fact that they have one of the best cords of any IEMs under $100... Hardly any microphonics at all, virtually none if worn over the head (microphonics = cord noise when it bounces or rubs against stuff). It's got like two layers or something (one of them is translucent so it's obvious).
Pretty high quality stuff, nice hockey-stick shaped plug, nice metal casings, comes with 5 different sets of tips (regular single flanges in three sizes and dual-flange tips in two colors) and a bunch of other accessories including a nice hard case that's slimmer than most of those types of cases I've seen. Highly recommended, I like them a lot more than my Senn or JVC (and I paid like $50 for the Senns around 5 years ago, $20 for the JVC recently). I've not been able to test the mic yet since my EVO hasn't arrived and I didn't feel like doing it with the iPod touch's sound recorder or something.

Does the V-Moda Faze have call answer functions?

I went ahead and bought the FAZE and wow, the sound is great and yes it works for answering/hanging up calls as well as playing music.
Anyone know/test normal apple ipod headphones? I have a pair and they're my usual set and I was wondering if any of the integrated controls (mic, volume up/down, push to pause etc.) work or if anyone knew.
Today I went down to mobilecityonline located in Canal street and purchased the Sony Ericsson MW600 bluetooth stereo headset for use with my EVO 4G.
At the moment it is charging [at least 8hrs], but I wanted to know if anyone it using this particular device?
Once I get it up and running, I will let you guys know how compatible it is with the EVO. Hopefully all the functions will work and I don't have to return it.

Well with alot of playing around and trying a few different audio apps, I got the MW600 to function the way I wanted, which saved me from returning it.
My main concern was being able to use the controls on the device, and I was only able to do so with an app called bTunes.
I had no luck with the stock Android music player nor with another App called
Audio Player WithEQ Platinum
Although those two did play via the bluetooth unit, I was not able to use none of the control functions.
With bTunes, I was able to play, pause, and use the forward and backward functions.
On a side note, the headphones that came with the MW600 are very short, but they sound very good. I ended up using my Klipsch Image S4i which I was using previously with my 3GS.

The controls on the Ultimate Ears Superfi 5Vi's are able to pause/play music along with voice dial and answer/hang up
Those V-modo's look cool, but honestly for the price they lack key features:
1- IN-line volume control. not a digital one like iphone headsets, but a slider on it, like the OEM mogul shipped with.
2.- for that price, and especially since it is coated in so much metal, it should have an inline radiation deadener- nobody wants radiation from their phone being transmitted right into their eardrums, especially since the 3.5mm port on our evo's acts as the FM antenna --- that is just insulting
At least from my experience with this device....
You are better off with using bluetooth headphones that can do MP3 bluetooth decoding and using Meridian as the music player. The truth is that while the headphone out is decently clean, it has a relatively high output impedance and not much driving capability. You are much better off getting some headphones with imp between 32-60ohms and at least 97db efficiency and not getting something too nice to use direct.
There is also the issue of when this is hooked up with grounding loop noise if you hook up your headphones to the output. Why the engineers who would put together such a media centric device would not think of such simple things is beyond me, but the iPod does it too and it is a pure music player.
If you happen to use a headphone amplifier, then you can use what you want because the audio signal will likely be free of much ground noise and have a really nice spectrum to it (much better than even my line out was on my iPhone....though not better than my modded iPod Touch).
If someone wants to work on USB host audio drivers I would be elated, willing to help as well. I can even make a custom hardware I/O box for the Evo!
I bought the Bose in-ear ones from Best Buy. I'm going to return them though. The sound is not as vibrant and alive as from my stereo BT set (S9-HD)

Is the volume using the iphone headset loud enough for you? I've tried it and it's too low and the people I'm trying to talk with sounds like they are fading in and out.
I'm thinking of returning since I can't even use it as a phone with the wired headset.

I red somewhere that smartphones and mp3 players might not have enough power to make your headphones sounds nice at higher volume.
I cant seem to find any figures for the note 2 that i can use to do the math, so does any one know what the output is of the note 2?

The phone should power the headphones, as it has a Wolfson DAC like some of the older model iPods, and a lot of people in the audiophile community claim the iPods with the Wolfson DAC were the best sounding (a little bit warmer and they give an overall better sound in comparison to the audi chips Apple are using nowadays from Cirrus Logic.
Try the stock player when they arrive and play about with PowerAmp and Jet Audio has loads of extra controls for sound settings etc, adding an extra headphone amp would boost the volume and give you a little more bass but at the cost of adding extra bulk, which sometimes isn't a good thing if your on the go all the time! Also apparently in the future BBE may be porting their SoundMax app from iOS to Android
I have been looking into getting a Note 2 for daily use and music, (trying to find an app that will play apple lossless!) and I also want to try and avoid adding the extra bulk of a headphone amp, the phone is big enough as it is Headphone wise, if your a bass head there is the newly released V-Moda M-100 which have been getting rave reviews, there is also the older V-Moda M80's which as still really good for the money (about the same you paid for your new Sennheisers). I have been looking at the AKG K550's a real nice set of headphones, they certainly look the part, and they are apparently great being powered by a Mobile, they are also closed back, so not much sound leak when your out and about. the only thing you should look at when buying new cans is the impedance (measured in ohm). in your case the impedance of the sennheiser 449 lies between 35 & 45 ohm. so, no problem to drive them without a dedicated headphone amp on smartphones and mp3 players respectively. to give you comparison, there are headphones with several hundered ohms of impedance. for these a headphone amp is highly recommended

Nope it doesn't require.... I have gaming stereo headset... Big in size, it works well in my nexus s... And must be working in note 2... Note 2 is using newer version of Wolfson chips

After a year of trying out different portable speakers - I tried the beats pill, Braven 625 (very good for ultimate portability....) and many others. I finally bought a Bose Soundlink Mini today. It is amazing! I cannot believe the sound from this little thing. While it does not have some of the extras others offer (Braven seems best in terms of will charge your phone, and can be used as speakerphone), it has the best sound I have heard from something so small.
This will not appeal to audiophiles or pimply teenagers who think they are audiophiles, but as a mini speaker that fills a big room with good clear sound it is great. Now my life is complete with my note 2, note 10.1 2014, anker wireless keyboard and this speaker. With this sort of technology now I can see myself going off grid with my camper van in the future, living with a solar cell and a kelly kettle for hot food
Just thought I would share this, there is not much I offer to the forum in terms of rooting or roms etc, I do intend to in the future as I am a google certified teacher and starting to use my note 10.1 as my main tool in the classroom to control my whiteboard......but at the moment if anyone else out there was like me and couldnt justify spending £150 on a tiny speaker then go for this one, its brilliant.
I have the same speakers, and they are great ...... for Bluetooth speakers. The sound is as good as I have heard from portable BT speakers. Can't beat them for the size.
I also have a Soundlink Mini.

Iv had a look at the speakers your talking about and they have an awesome sound but a price tag to match. I recently picked up a blue tooth / cord speaker from Aldi supermarket chain. It does all the things you've pointed out for $20 (sale price) and the sound is big and impressive with clear lows unlike what iv seen in other portable speakers. I snuck back and got a second.
I just picked up a JBL Flip 2 whilst in the states. Listened to the Bose and the JBL and you would be hard pushed to tell the difference. Also with the new Flip 2 they have done away with the need to have a plug in power adaptor which for me takes away the whole portable aspect of a portable speaker as you can now charge it through USB. Biggest bonus is it only cost me $95 which is half the price of the Bose.
Althought flip 2 is a good speaker, none can even dare to compare to the Bose! I wish i had it, i bought the UE Mini Boom, has the same features as the flip 2 almost the same price range, not the same sound quality, but good enough and pairs up to 8 bluetooth devices (2 simultaneous), 10 hour battery life (real), much smaller (fits on my beach toal pocket).
Well in all fairness thats opinion. I have spent many years using B + W speakers with other hi end hifi equipment so I am used to high quality audio and in my opinion the gulf is not that big. Certainly not double the price wise. What swung it for me is using them as a portable speaker. What good is a portable speaker that when it runs out you have to find a power socket to charge it. They realised this with the first JBL flip and with the Flip 2 replaced the need for a power adaptor with a simple usb charging port. So with my portable battery I can have music playing all day well away from a power source. But as I said its completely each individuals opinion which I fully respect.

This speaker has got to be the absolute best-sounding bluetooth speaker that I've had the pleasure of using.
It's exceptionally well made, nice and heavy, and doesn't look like a toy sitting on your desk.
It fills the room with sound and has a fantastic range of highs and lows I've tried louder speakers, but they didn't have the range, and quite frankly they just felt .... cheap.... NOT THIS ONE! You've got to consider the price and size of the speakers - speakers this small have limitations. This one has 3 built-in speakers which really rounds out the sound. My selections ranged from 1980's alternative to modern rock, top 40 and even some rap - all sounded really good on it! Something I could recommend this speaker for is to give you better sound off of your laptop (unless you have a super-high-end gaming laptop that has a subwoofer and some really kick-butt speakers in it) - just because you have an inexpensive laptop doesn't mean that the sound needs to be shallow and tinny - by connecting to this speaker , you really get some rich sound.
Over the past 2 days I've used it to play music at both work and home and it's lasted a good 8 hours on full volume with each charge.
It is capable of also being used on a wired connection - I've got a few "toys" that I could use that functionality with, but for the initial workout I am sticking with just wireless.
If you're looking for an moderately-priced speaker that doesn't leave you embarrassed to play loudly, this one is definitely worth your time and you won't be disappointed!

I have the Plantronics Backbeat Fit, and I love them. They sound really good (not premium, high-end I don't think), they don't move around when I'm working out, and they are super comfortable. They have a new gen out too. I think I paid $65-70 for them open box?
I checked out reviews for all of the major headphone brands, also tried out a couple cheaper ones. Most did not fair well in reviews except this set, and the others I tried were not good.

Bluetooth 5 has a range 120 to 140 feet, as apposed to 33 feet with most 4.1 bluetooth devices. But you will need a bluetooth device that matches the bluetooth accessory to get the distance. There are also other enhancements such as multiple devices can be used at the same time. I read an articel on this a few weeks ago. I hope my memory has given you some big enhancements with bluetooth 5.

Bose sound sport wireless for the win. They are awesome sound quality. 150 bucks. In my opinion the new truly wireless 250 dollar ones aren't worth it.
I bought these when I was waiting on my Essential to come, and they actually worked really well. Wasn't sure about the whole noise cancelling thing, but since they don't need to be charged separately (the phone powers the noise cancelling), I figured I would give them a shot. Really liked them, but ended up returning the Essential in favor of the 2 XL, so now I'm just hoping they're compatible, but I'm hoping that won't be an issue...they're not the most comfortable, since they have the large rubber things so they stay in place for active folks (I'm not one of them), but I got used to them. And the noise cancelling and ambient noise feature are actually pretty useful. But they've been sitting dormant since I returned the Essential and came back to good old Shamu (If only I could find a reverse 3.5mm -> USB-C adapter hahah). The fact that I got them for like $80 (down from $200 which is just ridiculous) made it a pretty good deal in my mind. The 17th can't come soon enough!
PS I wanted earbuds and didn't want wireless, or anything that needed to be charged, but the options seem to be extremely limited at this point

Absolutely agree. I need good gym headphones that didnt cost $200, and didnt move or fall out or break from sweat. These things are fantastic and i got'm for like $60 from costco
I got these about a year ago but my Nexus 6p doesn't support apt-x (i know it can with some tweaking in Oreo) can't wait to try them out with my new Pixel next week

Yep, I love mine. They sound REALLY good for just being little earbuds. I've had very nice over-ear headphones, currently have a pair of AiAiAi's, and the fit beats are pretty good! Jump rope is the only thing I've found that makes them budge. Floor workouts, everything else they don't move.

Another agreed, they are excellent for my HIIT cardio workouts and reasonable price!
I love my PowerBeats 2. I previously tested a bunch of different Bluetooth headphones for the gym and these are the only ones that stay in my ears consistently and have excellent sound. Battery life is around 8 hours and the Bluetooth connection distance is quite good. I can put my phone on a ledge and work my way through a ~100ft area for the weights and never lose signal.
If I decide to go with the Pixel 2 XL (still debating) I'll be getting the PowerBeats 3 for the gym and leave my PowerBeats 2 at my office desk. One area of contention with the loss of the headphone jack is that I work from home full time and have various clients calling me multiple times a day. So I usually have a set of wired headphones sitting on my desk that I can quickly plug in before answering the phone. With the 2 XL I won't have that option so I'll resort to the PowerBeats 2 to always be ready to quickly turn on and pair.
For those wondering, the PowerBeats 3 are essentially the same as the previous generation but with an even greater Bluetooth signal range and longer battery life.
I have been using the Samsung Gear Circle for years. They sounds great, stay in my ear while at the gym and the battery seems to last forever.

These headphones have lasted through 2 washes for me. They sound great if you squeeze them into your ear canal, but I can't think of a way to keepnthem in like that. Otherwise they are great because they hang on and don't fall out.
