[Q]galaxy note II not getting updated from existing android version 4.1.2 on it - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I got my NOTE II in march 2013 and gave it for repair under warranty around august 2013 for battery consumption by screen was very high .I never realized that the android version was not getting updated probably from the time it came back from the samsung service centre
Now few days ago I checked my phone and realized its android version to be 4.1.2 . I tried to update it from settings>software update option but it says its the latest version .Also when I tried to update it with Kies it again said no updates available . My phone is exactly the same as I bought it and I have not done any software alterations to it .
I tried to fix the problem by reading information available online but I an unable to figure out the reason to this problem and hence the solution .
Anyone please guide me as I am not sure how to fix it .I also tried to search similar threads but couldn't find. Kindly direct me to a similar thread if one exists or please let me know where to post my question if this is the wrong place for this thread .
I am also attaching screenshots to what I think might be required .

I am not sure how fast is downloading speeds from sammobile but read this thread. The person has uploaded the stock Indian firmware to 3 different download sites so download it from any of them. It's zip file once downloaded unzip the file , you'll get a tar file, put your phone into download mode and open odin 3.09 on your PC make sure only auto reboot and reset time are checked (which are checked by default) connect your phone to pc using original samsung cable and wait for ID PORT light to turn blue. Now select AP tab on odin and browse and select the stock firmware .tar file ,click start and sit back patiently.Good luck.

Thank you both the members for the reply.
I am downloading the firmware but I have a quick question ;Its only a firmware update but do I need to back up my phone data ??
And Is there a way to downgrade to my CURRENT VERSION OF 4.1.2 once I update ? Because I am updating it for only one problem of distorted screen when I disconnect a call. I am enclosing here the screenshot of the distorted screen problem .

As far as I know you don't need to back up your data when upgrading to official stock rom via odin or kies or ota (but i could be wrong, so just a safe bet to back up your calls and sms logs along with pictures if they are on phone memory) Other things you can't back up until you don't root your phone. Also once you upgrade to 4.4.2 you cannotdowngrade to 4.4.2 cause you'll be on a KNOXED bootloader which comes with 4.3 and 4.4.2 ROMS and bootloader is flashed on the motherboard of your phone so only way to "downgrade" would be replace your motherboard. You could only downgrade to 4.3 custom ROM (need to be rooted) or 4.3 Stock ROM which has to be flashed via mobile odin pro (mobile odin doesn't flash bootloader which comes in stock ROM)
Another alternative that you have if you are comfortable with rooting and want to flash custom rom you can flash any 4.3 or 4.4.2 custom rom from xda.And all you will need to after upgrading to 4.3 or 4.4 custom ROM is flashing MJ5 bootloader which is knox free which means if for whatever reasons you're not happy with 4.3 or 4.4 custom roms you can always go back to stock 4.1.2 ROM.
So you got few options so it all comes down to what you want to do with your note II and comfort level with rooting (although it's not tedious and process is much simpler now) some people just don't want to risk it.
Edit 1: After looking at your screenshot I have no idea why the dialpad moves right up, or you can reflash your stock 4.1.2 Indian ROM (got to find a link for that since it's been over 1.5 years easily so have to run a thorough search for it)
Edit 2: Take a look at this Thread Found pre rooted stock Indian version 4.1.2 same build # as your current one MG1 that is.
If I were you i'd try to first factory/reset my phone ( that would wipe everything off the internal memory along with all the apps and call logs/sms) , if that doesn't take the issue away , i'll flash that pre rooted 4.1.2 MG1 firmware from above link .Then if feel the need you should upgrade your phone to 4.3 or 4.4.2.

Well, I think I forgot to write that I am not very good with the technical details and would fit to the noob category .Googling the most basic terms used on XDA to understand what they mean is hard in a way,its like trying to find meaning of every second word you wrote in those 20 lines and then put those together to understand what I have to do .. None the less I will try to read more on what you mentioned and I think I will go ahead with your edit 2 suggestion for now .
Thanks again !!!

That should work out better for you.Who knows you might develop an interest in rooting and be ROM flashaholic like many of us.Good luck.

first would drop an official firmware 4.3 from samfirmware English, French or German region install it by odin in pda, would seek the mj5 bootloader after going after what knox free upgrade if you want official since the bootloader does not usually change although it actualizes

How to make your own baseband recovery (Extracting Modem.img)
This is the step-by-step process of how to extract your Own modem.img and convert it into baseband.zip for Noobs :good:
Steps (You need to have a Root before starting this process)
1. Connect by adb

3. On the terminal type:
Code:

One short Question: A friend of me only wants to root his device, maybe recovery, but no custom rom,so:
is the step "4. ROM flashing ( Recovery ) + Modem " really neccessary? I'm a bit confused about that modem flash, thats new stuff to me.
Thanks in advance

If your friend only wants root and recovery, just have to use the guide to root then use freegee. BUT, currently a lot of users are facing bootloop issues with freegee, myself included, so if he's not likely to use custom roms for now I'd suggest to avoid it, just until its fixed. Hopefully XD
Also, modem flashing is to flash a working modem for your device in order for network service to work. Some roms built mainly for international or other versions of this device actually work on other versions, just that there's a lack of network service lol. Modem flashing helps in that regard. Correct me if I'm wrong here anyone

Thanks for your reply. If i'm reading correct, freegee is only needed for custom recovery? If so: the recovery was only optional, all we need for sure is root. If we can just stop after that we would be fine.

Yes ..more or less..if all you need is root, stay away from unlocking boot loader for now. By the way, xposed frame work is working fine. I even changed DPI settings using ROM tool box n phone is playing nice.
I have actually started enjoying stock ROM with root n custom dpis.

Can no longer find Canadian Carriers
Hi, I have an unlocked E988 and use to be able to find and connect to Virgin Mobile in Canada, but now it only finds Bell and Rogers which I'm not with.
I inserted my SIM card and flashed both of the baseband modem files you provided in your OP and still can't connect. What else could be the issue?

Question about AT&T E988
So I just traded my HTC One for this beautiful Optimus G Pro and I'm loving it so far. Although I do want to get it rooted and load a custom rom and kernel in the near future. Although I am now reading that AT&T released an update(......10p) that breaks the current root method. The best I can figure its the software version they are talking about. My S/W version is E98010p. Can anyone possibly please point me in the right direction to get this thing rooted? Thanks!

Actually i flashed the omni rom for e980 and i have already flashed the correct e988 modem, but my phone still can't search the phone signal until i chose it from the network operator in the setting manually. Every time when i reboot the phone, i have to repeat the above steps in order to grab the signal. How can i solve this problem?

Issue is that right now TWRP looks for the device to be called "find7a" due to it actually being a Find 7a - but Oppo is shipping it as "FIND7" which is certainly to cause all sorts of issues going forward when the real find 7 comes out.
As soon as I can test it out I will be pushing a TWRP ready version of the OTA - or you can remove the ASSERT lines in the updater-script

No need to remove the Assert lines as I just change one of the FIND7 entries to X9007 for my Find 7a phone and it installs no problems.
Hmm, I installed TWRP and SuperSU, fastbooted the stock recovery.img back and the update file fails to flash in stock recovery for me... I've verified MD5. Not sure what it could be but a TWRP flashable.zip would be very appreciated anybody?
Someone got the international rom to download ( not coloros 2 beta) , i want to flash my chinese x9007 with it?
Well, I made the update, but I noticed that the screen is turning on in my pocket. My phone has the pre-ordered cover So I guess they didn't fix it very well (10.) Except if there is a cover option to tick somewhere.

Did you make any significant changes to /system? I got the update to work with stock recovery but the only difference I had from stock was that the OS was rooted. I also uninstalled Xposed Framework before installing the update. I didn't continue using the updated ROM though because I could not get Titanium Backup restores to work. Funny, because it worked of the previous version of ColorOS 1.2. Right now I'm running the ColorOS 2.0 beta. It's less glitchy than 1.2. I still don't like ColorOS and can't wait for an alternative.

Yeah I got LTE before and am still receiving LTE. I haven't found any glitches of note except that some apps installed to the "phone" storage don't work properly which was also the case with 1.2. Bear in mind I've only used 2.0b for a little over a day. Give 2.0b a try. It can't be much worse. Note that you'll need to either edit the .zip file as mentioned previously or use stock recovery. I used stock recovery.

Yeah I was going to edit the zipfile for the OTA update but didn't have a clue what file I was supposed to change the wording of/in. I might try it Sunday. I'm going to need a working phone tomorrow and saturday, plus I won't have the time until saturday afternoon anyway.
Because of not having a Find 7a right now and not using ColorOS i would be not able to mirror OTA updates, so nice that someone does this. If someone need the FULL package you would find it also in the forum.

I had the same issue. I resolved it by downloading V1.2.1i and doing a Local update, after this I was able to download and install all the OTA's.

[Q] Where can I find USA stock ROM T800XXU1ANFB?

I have a new Tab S 10.5 SM-T800 with firmware T800XXU1ANFB. I want to download a copy of the exact ROM it shipped with before I start making changes.
I have found various sites with "stock" ROMs for various countries, but only one for the USA, () and the downloads don't work.
This site has a number of ROMs, but only for countries other than the USA.
This site has a number of choices, but I don't understand the region codes. My tablet does not show a "region" in its information:

That is a pretty old firmware, why would you ever want to keep it?
Any way it's available here:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/32010/T800XXU1ANFB_T800XAR1ANF6_XAR/
Or
http://samsung-updates.com/details/30506/Galaxy_Tab_S_10.5_WiFi/SM-T800/XAR/T800XXU1ANFB.html
You can also install TWRP first and then make a full backup, but this will trip Knox or you can root with one of the methods in this forum that don't trip Knox then make a backup with FLASHFIRE.
If you want to check your region code:
Thanks! How did you know that the region code XAR was the US version? I do not see that code anywhere in the build number or elsewhere in the tablet.
The sammobile site lists the XAR code as "Cellular South". I saw that in many lists, but never suspected that was the one I wanted. Given that the SM-T800 does not have cellular capability, that seems like an odd designation.
I just need root for Titanium Backup, so the simplest method is best. The non Knox tripping method sounds good. I was looking at the Android Toolkit method.
Are you referring to the KINGOROOT method in this thread?
It says "To get root it is required to downgrade to a XXU1ANF8". It looks like XXU1ANF8 is earlier than XXU1ANFB? (sheesh - two versions different only by an 8 or a B - it's like they are trying to cause confusion )
So I should flash XXU1ANF8 first (using Odin? that won't trigger Knox?) then use KINGOROOT?
Now that I know what I'm looking for, I can recommend an working download location:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23501681358555496
Reasonable download speed - no scams or games....
Thanks given to XDA member open1your1eyes0
sammobile.com will dribble your download out over a day if you don't pay.
samsung-updates.com links to two sites that do not offer any free download (rapidgator will never give you the file, but will happily serve you plenty of spam as long as you're stupid enough to keep trying). Check these reviews for rapidgator

It says to root you need XXU1ANF8 or earlier.
XXU1ANFB is an earlier firmware than XXU1ANF8, so you don't need to downgrade. Just root and you're done.

This site shows ANF8 (2014-07-07) as earlier than ANFB (2014-10-29)
This site also shows ANF8 (2014 June) as earlier than ANFB (2014 July)
I realize that there is a lot of bad information out there, and you clearly know what's going on. If you think my current ANFB firmware is OK for KINGOROOT, than I would be happy to proceed and not have to flash with ANF8 first.

It could be, however my tablet came with ANFB and then got updated to ANF8 which seems backwards.
Its irrelevant anyway. It will either work or it wont, so just go ahead. If it doesnt work, flash ANF8.
With Firmware XXU1ANFB, KINGOROOT gives "Root Failed Error Code 0x136c3"

Try king root .
I went ahead and flashed ANF8 before I saw your reply.
With Firmware XXU1ANF8, KingoRoot succeeded. So it seems that ANF8 is indeed required for KingoRoot.
The only strange thing is that after installing SuperSU, System app remover does not find Kingouser anywhere in the list of applications?
Should I just move on, or does that mean there is a problem?
Edit - I found that KingoUser changed its name to SuperUser. I deleted it.
At this point, can I now use Odin to flash the latest KitKat firmware (T800XXU1ANK1_T800XAR1ANI1_XAR.zip) and still maintain root?
Or do I have to use Flashfire?

You have to use FLASHFIRE to flash any roms and keep root, it's actually easier to use than ODIN.
Why Kitat, you now have a Lollipop update?

I probably will go ahead and install the latest Lollipop.
Flashfire ---- still beta only, I assume? The testing page says "After leaving the test, you need to un-install the test version and re-install the regular version from the Play Store"
As far as I can tell there is no "regular version" in the Play Store" currently.

I'm getting ready to finish the process and move to Lollipop.
Just to clarify, there are two root threads that you started.
I followed this one to get my tablet to its current state.
You started this thread July 7. (New root method with KINGOROOT)
There is also this thread that you started a month earlier. ([GUIDE] How to root without tripping knox - Kitkat and Lollipop...)
I think I should start with the second thread (3129484), and pick up with step 11 (Flashfire). Then I use flashfire to load the latest Lollipop stock ROM file: T800XXU1BOE2_T800XAR1BOC5_XAR.zip
Correct?

Mate , the worst situation is that you mess up all the partitions which you can fix using the stock pit files ( for which I made a thread ... here ) ... so don't get frightened and try the recover and the ROM ( even in the recovery , you can't install the ROM because the model number differs ... ) also tell me about the nand structure and the CPU and also the Network support ... If everything is the same (esp the CPU and Nand Structure ) it's alright to give it a try but, if not , It's a waste of time to play this ... so , please provide a bit more detail ...

Yes, I can install TWRP and flash custom p601 roms (5.0.1) without a problem. When I flash a 5.1.1 custom rom, it did not. I beleive it is because of the new boot.img of 5.1.1 roms.

It'is identical to SM-P601 variant of note 10.1^2014, Just the RIL part is modified for not to support voice calls, It only use sim to connect network. When I flash p601 roms, I am able to make voice calls. I also make thread about it here. Partitioning is differs from p601 too. It's not the same but similar. One of my friends overwrite the pit with p601 stock roms and bricked the device before. I can boot with cm12 and cm13 roms for p601. But I want to use 5.1.1 stock or stock based roms.

You know why ? ( no that's not " Because sky is high !!! " ) the reason is that you have the KK Bootloader which causes the problem ... as you know , first you need to flash a P601 firmware to get the new bootloader ( Extremely Important Note !!!! ... Do not even think of ( ) ticking the " Update bootloader " in the Odin which makes you blame your self later ... !!!! the lollipop boot loader is installed by it self ... just do nothing about it ...) try if it get's installed that way ... also take a look at this ... maybe you find it useful ( to convert the P602 to P601 !!! ) Note that I haven't tried it on Lollipop CM or some other ROMs so make a backup first !!! ... If you couldn't install the Odin way , there are other apps and if they failed , then find the Multi-file version of P600 / P601 Lollipop ROM to flash the bootloader part directly ... Good luck :good:
hey dude have you ever found something about 5.1.1 bootloader for p602? I need that
I have restored my device which is a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 edition 2014 by using the settings>restore method. However, the screen is not going on, staying constant as i showed with photo below. I have opened the case of tablet, i have extracted the battery, and connected it again. No way, it does not continue, stays as constant like the photo. Is there anyone who can provide a solution?

@agesilaus have tried flashing original Samsung firmware with Odin?
Hello All, much worse happened to me: after 8 years of resistance I figured 4.2 is way too old so went for the stock update on the device. It was downloading for too long, stopped 3 times during the process. I guess it is when it got damaged as the above nice samsung logo got stuck after reboot. When I tried to boot to recovery it does the flashing again (definition of insane - doing the same expect different result) and that's all hangs in the air again. (Exactly as it is shown above on the picture - waited until the tabled discharged.)
I could boot to download but the latest odin doesn't like the stock image (hoping it is that, if anyone has a safe copy a share would be appreciated).
One more info the machine is badly overheating, ADB connects, but says device is not authorised and I can't remember if I had any PC enabled for the device would be still alive...
Many thanks for any hints.
@xantbubus for that old firmware I'd take Odin 3.09.
Using the multiple file firmware is safer.
You don't say which device exactly.
Which region?

Hello, thank you so much, apologies, it is sm-p602, the region is Turkey (althugh I live in Hungary but it was bought there).
Do you have a link for split firmware? They say even sm-p601 is working perfectly only the restriction on the call is lifted...
@xantbubus if sammobile, samfrew or others don't let you have them, use SamFirm_Reborn_0.3.6.3 which will definitely give you multiple files (if settings are correct ).

Thanks, google was not really my friend on this. Btw, I resolved the issue. Unfortunately I needed to clean the data partition but after that it worked. I guess the 3.09 odin also played part as earlier it was trying to reflash instead of going to recovery so thank you all!

Things to note before you manually update to Nougat

Hi Guys, saw many thread on instructions for manual update methods to upgrade to Nougat by either manual flash or via firmware finder. And also, debranding instructions using above methods but none of them mentioned the complications you may run into. You may have one or the other things not working. Im this thread, I will quickly summarize few of the things you may face after manual update by any of the above methods.
Please note before trying either of the methods.
1- You wont have updater app in settings so you may not update or get ota in future.
2- You may have missing keayboard(in some cases), file manager, clock or any other things.(you need to install clock and file manager manually).
3- If there is no rollback package available for your model, then you can not even rollback.
4- Do not try factory reset as if keayboard is missing after reset, you may not even be able to sign in to Google (voice command works but only on few screen and not all, i was able to somehow put my google id but not password and had to rollback).
5- It will unlock your bootloader (you may not even notice this)
6- you may not have the sim card management option(faced in 5C)
7- you won't have theme app installed and manually installing it may not work unless you are rooted.
8- you will not be able to make changes to sounds in setting. You can change the ringtone only via directly going to file manager, selecting the tone and thn set as ringtone but no way to do it in sounds option under settings.
I have tested such behavior many a times on honor 5C and found these bugs but i was sure that i will be able to rollback as I had the rollback package to downgrade to MM but things may not be that easy for all as you may not have the roll back package so be sure to have all the files handy and then only proceed further with manual update or have some patience as you will get Nougat update soon for H6X for all the regions.
Good luck, happy flasging.
I haven't any of that issues with my manual update to Android N.

Yup. Thats only for L21 model wherein you can flash that extra file for updater app. Not for other models i guess.
I updated my BLN-L22 using firmware finder method. However I want to go back to MM. Is there any way to do so? There is no rollback package available on official site.

This is sad. I upgraded to Nougat a week ago and used it for a week without Factory resetting it However, yesterday . I decided to do a Factory Reset because of standby battery drainage. After reset, none of the themes are working and file manager is gone.
Since Huawei is already releasing Nougat Beta in India, I'm hoping that they will also release the rollback package soon. Hopefully.

Absolutely. It is better to wait. We will get Nougat soon. May be in the month of May.
I just did a dirty update via OTA app, luckily everything is still in place...
I was rooted on 7.0 decided to go back to mm was easy just put roll back package in dload even though had twrp installed and can't flash stock firmware with it I continued to hold vol+ vol- power for ages through the boot up warning about bootloader being unlocked, "if keep holding" it installed then re booted copied the full B151 to dload repeated process and boom back to mm ( obviously this was on L21 were roll back package available )
