[Q] Gamepad Support on KitKat - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

So, I have an iPega Bluetooth gamepad that worked fine during the day of 4.2.2-4.3 (on my Nexus 4) but after the KitKat update, it doesn't detect other buttons than the directional pad. Skip forward 3 months, I got my self a Nexus 7 FHD and definitely fell in love with the USB OTG support. Then, I had the idea of plugging my computer gamepad through the USB OTG and the same thing happened, only directional keys are detected.
Did KitKat break some gamepad support? How was playing games with gamepad before the KitKat update? Were you guys able to play games with PC gamepads?

Hmm, maybe some incompatablity issues. Can you tell us the Gaming Pad Model, and did you use that "iPega" Bluetooth Gaming Pad?
And, do tell that is the iPega designed for phone/tablets only ....?

Sorry for the late reply, night time. Yeah it's designed specifically for phones and tablets, not for PC. I forgot the model number, I'll check it out when I'm near a computer.
Yeah, before the KitKat update, I could play many games including Asphalt 8, MC 4, NOVA, etc using the Ipega pad but since the update, none works as explained.

You might have to hack together a Vendor_*_Product_*.kl file for your device ID, here's an example of a kl file for xbox's controller. You can find the identifier and product on your system logs when the device plugged in. You may even be able to use an existing kl file, just rename it.

That is really interesting, I'll go try it out. Thanks man!

So I read the link you attached and as suggested checked out what my USB Game Controller is via logcat and found out it's a "Dragon Rise USB gamepad". I Googled it and found the driver file from this thread (download link here). Extracted the zip file, moved the .kl file into /system/usr/keylayout, changed the permission to 644 (rw-r--r--) and restarted.
It doesn't work on other games than Asphalt 8 and The Amazing Spiderman 2 but at least I can play those two games now, so yeah...

There should be an app that spoofs a controller(from many popular ones) then you map buttons/keys/sticks to it.. ie to fix gameloft no mapping options

Actually if you buy some good branded controllers, there are specific app for them that lets you do this. Even the SixAxis Controller thing can too, but nah, I don't feel like spending that much money on mobile gaming

The above link for -dragon rise USB .kl file is down can u please upload it ......I am in need of the key layout for my Mi phone....please share it if you have.

One quick way around is to root and install ChainFire3d and install the necessary plugins <Tegra, Qualcomm> and then installing them and playing the game!
Hope this helps!

Did you download it from the Android Market or from Samsung Apps?? Samsung Apps has it for free but specifically states that it is only for the oringinal SGS1 and not the SGS2.
I downloaded it from the android market and thank you everyone for your support. I feel so bad that I can't install the beloved game my 4 yr. Old loves to play on his ipod, I feel definitely really bad since I paid $749 for my GSII that I can't play a simple high end game like NFS.

Ok, the game is playing fine now, but the only problem is that every like 3 minutes it pauses or turns off completely, so I have to turn the power buttom on my GSII and the game comes back telling me that it has been paused.
Strange every time this happens I see the lock screen, have to unlock the lock screen and then un-pause the game.
Is anyone else having a similar problem like this?

[GAME]ShadowGun on market now

This is a game from madfinger, same people who did samurai II vengeance.
Of course its for Crap2(tegra) devices, so what the hell, lets see if it works with Chainfire3D
And so far its working. Game looks freaking amazing. This is really console like graphics.
No I do not work for madfinger just saying people should check it out. its 4.99 on market however.
Link to android central.
You must have chainfire installed for it to work. Obviously.

Thanks for the heads up! Downloading now... I have been playing Galaxy on Fire 2 using Chainfire and its an amazing game. Its free for a bit then $9.99USD to unlock the full game.
Anyone managed to play it with PS3's DualShock? Sixaxis works fine now even on stock, but the only game that played nice was Riptide GP (+ HDMI out = <33333 ).
I can't seem to configure the buttons, although part of the input works (movement is ok, but free look/aiming is not).
Anyone having similar issues as me? I'm running the game via ChainFire3D Pro and loading the nVidea Plugin which starts the game fine.
I'm gotten to the part where you go up some elevator and S.A.R.A tells you about their being some sort of device that you'll need to take out in order to stop your signal from being jammed.
After the elevator gets to the top, you take out a few men in a room, some of those mechanical spider things that run from under the stairs and there's also another soldier on top of those stairs. A mechanical sentry gun also comes out of the ground.
When you walk over to the controls by the big set of doors, you activate them to bring up a loading screen to the next level where the game crashes with an error message that disappears far too quickly to read.
Screenshot below of the section I'm on about, the controls over the opposite side of the room make the level change where the game crashes upon loading.

Yes have EXACTLY the same - 1st level complete & tap to continue, then repeated crashes. The message is the generic 'stopped responding tap to exit' type.
Worked flawlessly throughout the first level, then this.
Any ideas anyone?. Amazed how well the controls work so a bit annoying...

The thing is it is only working when I have internet connection, which I don't because I am currently abroad...

Google really screwed with games
Why don't all games use open GL and why do we have to get a specific version for each terminal, that sucks!
Google shouldn't allow things such as Tegra only games, it's a really bad thing for Android.

How is it a bad thing for Android for game developers to be able to push the most (graphically and performance) for each specific model?
Sent from my GT-I9100
Games should be like those on PC: only one version and you apply the different settings according to your hardware.
On Android it's crazy, it's as if on PC, devellopers would have to release a different version of their games for each different type of graphic card or processor or memory and wouldn't use Direct X, that would be really stupid!
I really despise Tegra only games, if the phone isn't powerfull enough to run the game at full specs, just let the user lower the settings so we can still enjoy the game (much better than no game at all).

I'm guessing you're not rooted yet?
I already heard that USB storage doesn't recognize but that apps can pull it off if the device is rooted.
I have used my Sixaxis with GTA. I have also plugged my other phone in and was able to get adb shell to the other device (which also subsequently was charging as well). USB thumb drives work as well when used with StickMount (found in the market created by one of our own). USB hubs work, powers itself and worked with a USB keyboard, mouse, and the thumb drive.

Btw what emulators does the Sixaxis ps3 controller work with? The idea of bluetooth + dual analog sticks + awesome build design and a recognizable controller is worth $50 . Does it work with n64oid/gameboid and other emulators? How about just android games, shadowgun maybe?
Edit 2: Played Super smash bros with the wii controller, worked great. Played it with Zelda OoT .. was a f***ing nightmare; virtual controllers are better. (I attached the nunchuck for this game) The deadzone of the analog stick is ridiculous, and you can't use the B button on the controller at all because N64oid (and the other emus) register it as the "Back" button so you cant use your sword at all and all it does is bring up the stupid emulator menu every single time ... I tried remapping the button in the Wii IME app to no avail ... what a pain -.- I hope the PS3 sixaxis works better; it definitely looks better than the nunchuck/controller with the wire and everything ...
USB game controller support was introduced in 3.2 and should be carried over into ICS.
Best solution IMO is the Six axis app and wireless bluetooth. The new six axis app supports virtual screen presses to make it compatible with virtually all android games.

Not quite just the wifi. Also hardware HEVC encoding, a speedier processor, gigabit ethernet...
I would love to take one of these devices for a test-drive! It looks really good, particularly with the added H.265 decoding and wireless AC

Been using it for a week, it runs like a standard Android box. I installed Nova Launcher on it and it worked fine.

Streaming TV apps
just few days ago got this device....
No Live Streaming TV app is running on it...tried multiple one (tv tunnel) screen become flicker and doted picture will be on screen.
no idea why it is happening ....
Greetings gentlemen. I'll be buying one of these for myself in the coming days (just waiting for my paycheck), hoping to have it relieve my Raspberry Pi from its current job.
However, my Pi is currently set with Deluge and Flexget so it autodownloads to the respective folders. Could any of you check if installing them is possible on the X-8 Plus? We have some instructions here on how to do it, and when I buy it I will make an attempt anyways, but knowing it in advance would be useful.
What the hell? EVERY other box does at least 1080p...
"**The NEO X8-H Plus only supports standard definition Netflix. Netflix 1080p HD and 4K UHD resolution are not available on any MINIX NEO Series devices."
Thats a BIG bummer
Anyway to root this device and install optware on it ?

You can root the MINIX Neo X8H-Plus using the iRoot application (or it's Chinese language parent, vRoot)
http://www.mgyun.com/m/en
Steps:
1. Turn on Developer mode by clicking on the BUILD entry in the ABOUT section in SETTINGS (click it at least 7 times)
2. Enable USB debugging
3. Install iRoot/vRoot on your PC
4. Connect the Neo X8H-Plus using the OTG cable (microUSB to USB cable included in box) to PC.
(Neo X8H-Plus needs to be connected to a display when doing this; also, a mouse would also be helpful)
5. After PC detects Neo X8H-Plus, run the iRoot/vRoot application and click on the CONNECT DEVICE button.
6. When iRoot/vRoot attempts to connect to your Neo X8H-Plus, a security warning will appear on the display. PERMIT access to the application in order for the iRoot/vRoot application to successfully connect to the Neo X8H-Plus
7. Once iRoot/vRoot is connected to your device, click the ROOT button
8. Wait until process is complete
Cheers!

After much tinkering, I was successful in my endeavours. I mostly followed this guide and am now the satisfied owner of a SSH'd with SFTP, Transmission'd and Samba'd X-8Plus.

I can attest to it, it was the method I used to root mine. It does install a couple of chinese apps while doing so, but nothing you can't remove after having it rooted.
