usb otg on galaxy tab 3 7.0 - Galaxy Tab 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is there any way to use usb otg on galaxy tab 3 7.0

Not working yet, but I am working on it now. All wiring is correct internally but the otg phy driver defaults to dock mode. Omce I patch it you will lose dock mode but gain otg.

No problem, I should have it fully going in the next week or so as time permits me. USB OTG is pretty much a requirement for my final goals and i doubt anyone will miss the dock feature. So far my kernel recognizes devices via lsusb and prints vendor info but it might need changes in the rom as well which im gonna tackle now.

Wishing You Success

our tablet doesnt support usb otg so what the OP is trying to do is whenever you connect your usb, it will use the wiring and stuff of dock mode to load and use usb otg

Yeah, any progress @BinaryDroid?

I know for a fact that officially the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 does not support USB OTG via the official Samsung Firmware for the device. But I think you guys could get it to work if you use a custom ROM for the device.

This tablet really disappointed me.
The chipset supports USB host:

official for galaxy tab t110?
and if you could put him whether drivers usb modem zte such as to have 3g on the tablet via a usb modem? Thank you.

You could also do it for the t110?
you could include drivers usb modem to connect a usb skewer?
I'm trying to do this http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=533210
but the tablet does not recognize the modem could make it work in a t110 please thanks.

I do not have a mainboard for the T110 to work on the kernel or to trace out the layout as I did on the T217. Officially the T217 has no a stripped down set of drivers and its alot of coding to trace the board layout to each GPIO, then get the GPIO numbers, write a shim kernel module to activate host(im hoping to do away with this when I am done), then link it into the ROM itself.....its not an easy task as you can tell.
PS: for the record I will not touch PXA devices lol, hate me or not I just do not like the PXA.

USB Host On Evo?

sven.killig.de/android/N1/2.2/usb_host/ This method enables you to host usb devices from your Nexus 1. Is it possible do this on Evo also?
Looks like it might only be for Froyo, but then again not sure.
He writes it should work for 2.1 but even for Froyo (custom ROM ) it would be great
I am working on a few custom roms right now but when I'm done with that I'm gonna start working on some kernels including this exact feature.
MOD EDIT - Moved to Q&A
my question is "does the hardware of the evo support usb host mode?" I know the evo shares a lot with the nexus one and other current gen htc phones so I'm hoping so.
BUMP!
omg please... anyone have the gear to try this... i guess im gonna have to take some stuff apart..

If/when you are ready, let me now. I have keen interest in this.
Here's what I know:
1) The EVO has no power supply to power the USB device (so you will need a powered hub or cable hack).
2) HTC loves to (seemingly) use the fifth pin as a way to know that the car charging dock is in use so there is a strong possibility that auto-sensing a USB host cable will not work; it will have to be entered via software in some other way. It could be that this switch is actually HTC's own software running and detecting it; I've never dug in enough to know.
3) The Snapdragon processor has the hardware to support USB host and there is a project that Qualcomm has to support the features of their processors witih Android which is (presumably?) where these drivers came from: https://www.codeaurora.org/xwiki/bin/QAEP/
I'm willing to support such a project with my (limited) knowledge and cash. Let me know who's interested

I've done this. There is no built-in support on Android 2.1 or 2.2 from HTC on the EVO. At least no support for flash media. We will need to add the driver from here (or something similar):
HTC HD2 Kernel with support for USB Host. Same processor and probably similar internals, too. I don't have to the time to get up-to-speed on downloading/building/deploying kernels (and I'm not rooted, yet, on the EVO). I have an HD2 and I might try their stuff on that as it looks like it's "done" so I can see how well it works (or not).
Just got the cable today. Checking out these links and trying things now...
thanks for the pointers. I'm running cyanogen nightly 8-1... so far, i get:
D/Tethering( 102): interfaceAdded :usb0
from logcat when i plug my hacked (routed dc+ voltage from a nearby
+5v pin to the upstream cable red wire) powered usb hub into this OTG cable.
The EVO charges when i have it all plugged in as well...

What's on the other end of the cable? Just the hub? The "D/Tethering" message probably shows up with nothing connected at all (did you see that or try that?) I suspect that's a listener on usb0 to see if a host is plugged in to allow tethering with the phone.
Was there any progress / update on this after you plugged into the USB hub? Have you tried it with anything else?

Kinda in the same boat here. I lost a lot of steam after my last post. I did the hardware part no prob but just hit a wall with the rest. And since flashing CM6 final I can't adb or even charge the EVO unless i have the micro usb otg cable plugged into a male-to-male usb extension plugged into AC adapter. Gonna flash back to another ROM to make sure it's just software related, but I really don't wanna lose my wiimote and apple wireless keyboard compatibility.
bump
just curious as to the status of usb hosting on the HTC EVO.
well i'll say this
IF it is supported in froyo natively
you dont need to make a custom hacked usb host cable
you can buy a motorola host adapter for micro-usb made for the new motorola es400 which supports usb host operation.

Not quite that simple.
There is no power supplied from the EVO so you will, at a minimum, have to supply a powered USB hub or a self-powered device, and you will also need the low-level driver to turn on the USB hsot support in the Snapdragon processor.
looking for info on the evo shift...if anyone happens to have any info or leads.

It's a similar device to the Evo, so maybe there is hope for the Evo to get it?

[Q] A100 w/3.2 does not work in USB Accessory Mode

I have an Acer Iconia A100 Tablet with Adroid Honeycomb 3.2. I also have an Arduino-compatible board with USB Shield. (Arduino is an open source hardware platform that enables Android tablets/phones to do things like machine control over the Universal Serial Bus.)
My A100 won't communicate through the USB port to the board. I know it's not designed to work in USB Host mode, but this setup is designed for tablets with USB Accessory mode. Other posts say that Android 3.2 devices are supposed to work in USB Accessory Mode and with the Android ADK. (Note that I did enable "USB Debugging" in Settings - Applications - Development.)
Here is a picture of what I am trying to do:
www(Dot)seeedstudio(Dot)com/wiki/File:SeeeduinoADK_Setup.jpg
The Android phone can toggle an LED and receive input from a variable resistor. USB Power is provided by the board, not the phone.
I'm trying to troubleshoot why the A100 does not recognize anything connected to its USB port. Yes, I can transfer files to a PC over the USB, but that's about it.
I downloaded a terminal emulator app to my A100. When I put "USB devices" into the terminal emualtor, it never sees any devices connected -- not even my PC when I transfer files.
Another post talks about installing "Taboonay" on an Acer A500 unit to allow it to work in USB Accessory mode, but I could find nothing equivalent for the A100.
Can something be done to get the Acer A100/3.2 to work in USB Accessory mode?
This is a very interesting post.
First let me say I'm a noob but I will do the best I can with what I know.
I'm not sure if we will get full USB host or at least accessory mode. I think it will always be a multi-part issue. I think the micro USB port the A100 comes with doesn't the correct pins to provide power to ANY USB device. So what ever device is connected has to supply its own power. If this is correct I don't a way around having to supply any USB device external power(this doesn't seem like a major issue just a limitation).
At first I figured we could just use a powered USB hub and we would be good to go I guess not... at least not yet.
However on other devices developers here have been able to rewrite a USB driver to enable other modes and features. Right now the hope is that this can eventually be done. I don't think a solution is currently available. It does sound like you might of assistance in furthering that cause however and would encourage you join us all in seeing what we can get our A100s to do.
I hope this information was helpful for you.

You are correct, the micro USB port will not supply power to devices connected to it, even if it did it would drain the battery even quicker than what it does.
In order to get USB host / accessory mode to work the most we can do at the moment is compile a kernel module for it and try to load it in the current running kernel via insmod. Right now such a thing does not exist, but hopefully if I ever get some free time and if no one else has done it I'll be able to do it.

Thanks to crossix and NoSudo for the replies. I have been beating my head against the wall for weeks trying to understand my problem. Apparently, some Honeycomb 3.2 devices can operate in USB Accessory Mode and some cannot. I could not find anything in the Acer A100 specs that addressed this, and Acer Tech Support has not been helpful.
One question: If the unit can somehow get upgraded to "Ice Cream Sandwich," would that solve the USB Accessory Mode problem?

No, ICS will not.. but if they enable the functions at the time they build the kernel that might do it.

That is right... assuming they have a driver for such a thing. Since it seems they are basing their kernel on the Ventana board, I don't see why not.

Ripped off by USB Capabilities
Recall that I have an Acer A100 with Android 3.2 and micro USB port that will not work in "USB Accessory" mode as the operating system would have me believe. How can I avoid a similar problem with my next tablet purchase? Could I have checked the tablet's specs more thoroughly? I feel ripped off and would like to know how to buy more intelligently in the future. Acer tech support does not have a clue about this and does not care.
Thanks to the respondents of this post.
yeah, as they said, the micro-usb port on board won't supply power to devices connected through it.
I tried THIS but didn't work, so, maybe if we could make an usb to micro-usb cable with its own power supply it could work (not sure at all)
USB Accessory Mode not Host Mode
Thanks, but the USB power is not an issue here. The board I am using (www(dot)seeedstudio(dot)com/depot/seeeduino-adk-main-board-p-846.html) receives external power. My tablet is supposed to operate in USB accessory mode in which it can send out USB information to this board which provides power.
I am trying to find out, before I buy my next one, whether the phone/tablet can handle this "USB Accessory mode." Some devices can handle it as per this picture: www(dot)seeedstudio(dot)com/wiki/File:SeeeduinoADK_Setup.jpg. The Acer A100 cannot. How could I have determined this before I bought it??

The best way to test something like that out is to bring something that requires being plugged into a usb to operate (like your keyboard) or you could Google "<device name> tech specs".

In the service manual I have found the scheme of our motherboard. Our device's HARDWARE doesn't support USB host at all.
New here, I just bought an Acer A100 specifically for using it with the android ADK based off this (apparently I can't post links? ok just google "Tablets and the Android Open Accessory Development Kit (ADK)" and click on the first result) website's recommendation. And now I find that it doesn't work at all? Nothing I can do about this?

Bluetooth via OTG???

With the release of custom ROMs on our device, is it now possible to get bluetooth working via otg cable? I wasn't going to answer because I'm not a dev....but was curious so looked up some stuff.
From what I can see....I can't find anyone doing that, ever. Yet I see a LOT of people saying "No, not possible unless you get a custom ROM" yet....I haven't found anyone that has actually done this!
Not sure why, although since we have devs I will be curious to see their response. No idea why I can't find a SINGLE post of anyone doing it, yet I also haven't seen anyone that has flat out said no, only that you will need a custom ROM.
If we do get it working, it would probably be one of the first times someone has done bluetooth via OTG. If you can find anyone that has done it before though, that may help out.

well my plan was to buy a usb dongle, cheap ofcourse, put an external power supply, i.e 5v supply if i cant get one. for talking sakes lets say i use a battery ( i know voltage etc are not same as 5v supplied by normal usb ports) hook red + on battery, black to negative on the battery and add a switch so i can switch it on and off, so the only thing i would then need to take would be the data coming from the kindle itself. From what i can gather cm10 has bluetooth dongle support, if so then it would just be a case of an app looking at usb instead of internal bluetooth. Please correct me if i am wrong ( which i am pretty sure i am ). This is one feature which has let the kf2 down for me. All the others i can live with, even if i only had stock rom and it had bluettoth connectivity, it would be better for me. I hate having ideas but not being able to do anything about it so any advice, tips or reasons as to why it will not work is all good
While im on, does anyone have a kf2 with custom rom, a powered usb hub, an otg cable, a bluetooth dongle and a spare ten mins to check if the dongle is recognised by the kf?

Sorry to revive this, but I have a kindle fire 2, rooted with the official cyanogenmod jellybean. I'm later going to order a bluetooth dongle and I already have a powered hub. Being a college student I have a lot of spare time to this sorta thing. I'll check back later if there are replies or if i have done it and have results.
EDIT:
Although some people on this thread have already said that bluetooth doesn't work without a powered hub, you can find videos demonstrating it without a powered hub. I'll also test this later.
Cm10 + otg + bt dongle = works!
I recently about an Onda V973 specifically so that I can load CM onto it but was disappointed that BT wasn't built-in. So I got an OTG cable and a cheap dongle. At first the connection didn't work but after a reboot CM was able to load the drivers for the dongle. Works great! :good:
I am 99% sure Kindle Fire does not have a bluetooth chip. I tried it myself on CM10.2, 10.1, and it doesn't activate. The modem does not have this feature.
It would be interesting to try and mod the tablet that way, though.

[Q] OTG Cable for Sprint LG Optimus G LS970

Hi I am new to this forum and i just purchased and unlocked my Optimus G. Now I'm looking into a OTG cable that may work on this phone as the sprint version, as you all know, does not support Micro SD cards for extra data storage. Now i know they have wireless HDD's that you can carry to store information and Bluetooth keyboards and mice that you can connect to the phone out of the box. But i had External HDD drives that are not wireless and a Wireless keyboard/mouse USB combo all that i would like to run on the phone at a cheap rate. I have read some places that OTG is possibly not capable on this phone. Can anyone verify that this is not possible. Again i am very tech savy and my phone is rooted and unlocked, so if all i need to do is change a kernel or install some files i can definately figure out how to do that. Can anyone clarify this for me and if it is possible put links to cables and tuts on how to do this? i couldn't necessarily find it when i was looking on XDA earlier, and its the only site i really trust for information about my phone.
"USB host", or what is commonly referred to as OTG, is not supported on this device. I'm not sure of the usb controller so I cannot say as to whether or not this is a hardware or software limitation. Either way, I consider this a serious shortcoming, especially on a flagship device.
I was hoping you wouldn't say that. Well if that is the case, can anyone verify if this is not possible because of the software or hardware. If it is because of the software is anyone trying to develop anything for this right now? Thanks again for the verification^

the nexus 4 "doesnt support otg" yet people have modified a kernel to add the feature in. the device does NOT support 5v so you will need to power the hard drive or w/e with external power using a y-cable.
if we have the same usb controller as the nexus 4 then i would assume we'd have to do the exact same thing... custom kernel + y cable for external power. so try and get some kernel devs together and work on on getting that project started for the LS970 device if you really wanna see it happen.

if we have the same usb controller as the nexus 4 then i would assume we'd have to do the exact same thing... custom kernel + y cable for external power. so try and get some kernel devs together and work on on getting that project started for the LS970 device if you really wanna see it happen.

I built in USB host and USB otg support and a art user reported it wasn't working. However I can through up a 3.4 kernel if someone has the cable and power to test it.

If u send me a link to a y cable i will purchase one if that's what's needed. What are the risks to updating to this kernel you mention?....^ somebody on the other thread that was posted here said we have a more complete usb host package than nexus 4. I think he was the thread creator. When i get home ill qoute his post.

That's up to your kernel devs. I outlined everything required for the N4 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38906771&postcount=2
That said, I once took a look at the kernel files for the Optimus G and it looks like the code for otg/host mode is far more complete than that of the N4. I'm curious if it's able to read the ID pin in its current state..

Is there going to be any chance this will be ported over to the Sprint Optimus g LS970G? Or a more proper place for this question? Thank you.

This is what they had to say on the other forum so far. I don't know any dev's, but if any of you are reading this it sounds like there is a lot of Source Code developed for this already on the Nexus 4. If anyone reading this knows someone capable of doing this if you could forward it to them, because I'm sure I'm not the only person who would like OTG or "USB Host" be available for this phone.
I guess nobody has tried to work this yet? I still haven't seen any kind of development.

Surprising, really. I'm a little butthurt about it. But I'm more than happy to hotwire the 5 volt lead on my OTG cable upto an external power supply for testing if anyone has some mad keyboard skillz and wants to use my phone as a guinnea pig.

Any news so far? In april, it seemed there wan't any modiefied kerned which allowed, as well as in nexus 4, to get the USB host function through an external powered usb hub, is there any now?
usb otg support on LG optimus g 970
I am running an Optimus G 970 and I was attempting to gain support of an external USB DAC called "HiFimediy Sabre".
My first project is to attempt to gain some usb otg functionality.
I created a cable to test since the native 5vdc power out function is not there.
I used my computer to power the cable with 5vdc which was verified by the phone "slow charging".
I ran the "usb host diagnostics". This is a diagnostic tool and it looks at the functionality of the usb port.
Note the following.
1. Phone is rooted.
2. Phone is running all stock software and firmware.
I was asked to reboot to apply a firmware fix by the app after allowing it rooted access.
The app was run one more time following the instructions on the screen and plugging in my pny 16gb usb drive.
It was not able to connect.
I received the following unique code: 188704.
I will follow up when I know more.

[Q] Micro USB to Ethernet Adapter + Note 2 = ?

Hello,
I've searched the forums and made no conclusion whether this would work or not so I'm starting a new thread. So I'll be living in halls for some time and in the halls there is no wi-fi only ethernet cable and bringing a router is not allowed
So my question is will a micro usb to lan adapter work on Note 2? Has anyone tried it? And are there any other solutions to this problem?
Big thanks for any response. :highfive:
Unfortunately I wasn't able to get it work. I've tried several kernels, with stock rom, but no luck.

Thanks for the response!
That's bad I read somewhere that these work with phones that support OTG cables but idk. Are you sure you tried a Micro USB adapter and not a regular USB one plugged in with an OTG cable?

It's good to know it doesn't work with an OTG cable. Has anyone tried a Micro USB to Ethernet adapter and wants to share his thoughts?
Bump! ^:fingers-crossed:
I am able to get my usb ethernet adapter working by following this thread. Running on Omega V16.

Can u provide us a little more info? Which Note do u own, kernel, etc? Did u compiled something yourself or did u find something precompiled? Thanks!!

I'm using N7100 running Omega 17 (XXDMC3) standard kernel.
I used the precompiled driver provided by gingerneil in that thread and followed the steps.
