Developer support will likely be similar. The Pro model will likely be discounted and cheaper while the S will offer larger screen, amoled vs lcd, thinner, more memory and longer battery life. It will mainly come down to if you prefer amoled over lcd.

[Q] Pro 8.4 vs S 8.4. Worth the price difference?

I'm looking to buy 8.4 inch tablet. From what I read, both are very good tablet. The difference of price here is about 70 AUD.
I don't really care about AMOLED vs LCD- both are fine.
I'll most probably run it on custom ROM. Tab Pro already has official CM support and established community. I'm not sure about Tab S, it's is too early to tell at this stage. I also notice Tab S is slightly thinner and lighter. Tab S runs on 3GB ram compared to 2GB of Tab Pro.
Probably you guys can give an opinion whether the price difference is worth it. Is there any other factor that makes one better than the other?
In regards to custom ROM support, I would think the Tab Pro 8.4 would get more support because of the Snapdragon 800 processor. In America that processor is very popular and used by different manufacturers, so developer support is strong. The S 8.4 has a Exynos processor, which I'm not sure of developer support.
This video compares the Pro 8.4 vs. S 8.4
In addition to the above answer, if you are not going to root and will need Knox for security, go for the Tab pro. If you will root the device, get the Tab S because it has 3gb memory and it will certainly help.
I prefer the screen of the Tab Pro S. It is brighter and I have not had any problem with the 2 units I have used. I have also bought the Tab S 8.4 and the 10.5. Their screen were pinkish when viewing webpages with white background. I can also see purple fringing on top of icons and letters, while I see green fringing at the bottom.
I suggest go to a local store and try them both, only you can really make the best decision for yourself.
Good luck
If you actually don't care about the screen I would 100% get the tab pro 8.4. The snapdragon 800 is a better SOC than the exynos in the tab s. Your tablet will be quicker and developer support will always be more active with the snapdragon compared to the exynos. I currently have the tab pro 8.4 and it's perfect in every way except for the screen. I got spoiled with my note 3 and now I'm not sure I can stand reading off the tab pro in bed at night.
tl;dr if you don't care about the difference in screens, save your money and get the better performing tab pro 8.4

I use lux lite from google play to reduce the brightness at night.
Thanks for the heads up regarding the Qualcomm vs Exynos thing, guys!
I love to customize my gadget and an active development community means a lot to me
I was leaning to tab S and now reconsidering my decision on tab pro.
If you own both device, I'd like to know your opinion about how it feels at your hand. I cannot try Tab Pro 8.4 at my local store (samsung decide not to sell it here) so I can only get it from grey imports. Does the difference in weight & dimension a significant one?
Hey I'm in the same position, can't decide what Tablet to get, I have however tried both of them in the shop and can say the Faux Leather plastic of the TabPro is not nice however won't we all be having a case on it anyway? As for the size difference is noticeable however in daily use I doubt it'd really effect anybody.
The price difference is £100 so that also plays a part idk how much cheaper the TabPro is for you. I'm also looking at the Nvidia Shield Tablet - let me know what you think to that compared to the Samsung tablets

Nvidia shield is a gaming tablet and Samsung's tabs are casual tablet. It depends on your use case; for me, I'd rather play games on my pc instead of tablet.
What do you think about the weight? does Tab S feel more comfortable? It is very light for an 8.4 inch tablet.

The Nvidia shield is close to stock android and has the best chipset out atm? and at a competetive price, the only thing is the weight of it...
And The tab was lighter though it's hard to tell when they have the security attachment things on the back. I tried bending it and it felt pretty solid considering how thin and light it was

EDIT: I thought it runs on Tegra 4. It turns out to be Tegra K1 which is a better processor.
I'm not sure about the best chipset. Snapdragon 800 has better clockspeed and only one less core. Exynos 5 has 8 core but a little less clockspeed.
While it might be true that it is close to stock android, Nvidia is famous to keep the source of their SoC, making it harder for devs to develop things. I own LG optimus 2x with nvidia tegra 2 chipset and familiar with frustated devs blaming nVidia for it. Also, You can see that there is little to no development going on Shield's forum.
Qualcomm on the other hand is more developer friendly.
Another difference to note is the finger print scanner on the Tab S
I tested the Pro 8.4 and S 8.4 at a store. The S is noticeably lighter and thinner, but it doesn't matter to me since I always uses cases that add some bulk. I really don't like the Pro's extra height, which makes it a little awkward to hold in portrait mode. Its also harder to find sleeve cases that fit the height, without resorting to a sleeve made for a 10" tablet. The Pro is modeled after the Galaxy Note 3, while the S is modeled after the Galaxy S5. The Pro/Note 3's faux leather back is just matte plastic. The S/S5's back has a rubber-like coating thats soft and grippy. Getting the Pro 8.4 was an easy decision, especially due to the lower price. I can't see the difference between LCD and AMOLED screens.

Yeah I have tried that. Looks like you have a note 3 also. Try reading something in the dark with the note 3 and black background with grey text. Like google play books with night mode turned on or any app with an amoled option. Then try the same with the gtab pro in the dark and you'll notice a huge difference!
I prefer the pro 8.4 against the s 8.4. Its cheaper by a lot and has a more widely used SoC hence more awesome ROMs to choose from.

Yes I know what you mean. It (ASAmoled screen) is nicer when reading at night, but I can't stand looking at it during the day time. I have already returned the Note 3. I only have S4 and Tab pro 8.4 now.

Can't decide, going Crazy. (Tab Pro vs S 8.4)

I really can't decide on which tablet to go with. I'm going crazy, have ordered and cancelled back and forth out of being undecided.
(Im buying LTE version to replace my Note 3 as my main communications device, including phonecalls and networking)
Reasons for Pro 8.4:
I do a lot of reading, so white backgrounds are handled better with the SC LCD on the Pro (brighter), also less battery consumption on lighter backgrounds (also whiter to my understanding), i don't enjoy oversaturated colors on AMOLED Screens (i set my display as professional photo profile on my Note 3, which reduces oversaturation), plus Super Clear LCD (i think it's similar to IPS?) would be superior sharpness-wise against the pentile arrangement of the S Amoled?. I don't like the gold bezel on the S much but that can be covered with a skin i plan to buy, prefer the chrome one. Slightly faster processor. Cheaper.
Reasons for S 8.4:
Newer (by a couple of months) but thinking on longevity Samsung might make the S series their baby, that means slower software updates for the Pro and maybe less longevity software wise, 3 GB Ram makes it future proof. AMOLED has a lower screen longevity, i've seen Galaxies S2/S3 in stores that looks horrendous, and well, i might not have this tablet in 2-3 years, but if i do i prefer to have it looking as good as new. Lighter.
Anyone who has owned or currently owned both can compare and give their reasons on why they chose one over the other?
I know that AMOLED has come a long way in advancements but, are the whites now closer to SC LCD? Is the bluriness from the pentile arrangement gone vs SCLCD/IPS?
Thank you!

What bother me the most is better support to Qualcomm processor (Pro) vs better RAM + lighter + thinner (S). Good luck your our decision

I did read both your threads, thanks
This is driving me crazy hahaha.
Post on wrong thread
Do yourself a favor and go to a store and have a look at both tablet side by side and you will see the differences. The whites are whiter and black are near perfect pitch black. The pro screen looks washed out and to me colors aren't strickingly realistic. After looking at this screen long enough, i can't see myself going back to apple retina or any ips screen anymore. I just wish samsung software is on par with apple.
I have a note3 rooted running well so I decided to buy tab s 8.4 wifi. I found that the tab S response is relatively slow and most disappointed is that tab s 8.4 doesn't support 4K video. It is not smooth, relative to note3, in some 1080p video. It is far to my expectation. I am planning to sell it out.
Do you own an Note 3 with Exynos or Snapdragon?
My guess is that sluggishness is because of some early stage problems with Exynos 5 in conjunction with highres AMOLED. Very likely it gets matured as the hardware should be pretty capable.
I had the pro and changed it to the tab s. They are both very similar.
The pro had a little bit of a better battery life. I prefer the screen on the tab s. Love the fingerprint scanner and how thin it is. I prefer the tab s overall.

You like the screen on the S better, would you be more specific?
Are we speaking about shaprness, colors, blacks, whites?
Any other reasons to go with the S instead?
Thank you

I cant find the S in my local best buy, just the Pro. So i cant compare but im going to trust you.
You say whites are whiter? I own a Note 3, and well whites are good but not as good as an IPS screen, i thought Pro's SC LCD was just another name for IPS?
Touchwiz lags behind iOS, but i actually like android better.
Thanks for your input!
I was stuck making the same decision at Best Buy lol
I did end with with the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 after doing three days of a bunch of research reading reviews and comparing the pros and cons.
Why i chose the Tab S 8.4 over the Pro
- 2560x1600 Super AMOLED screen (insane contrast ratio, the whites are bright and, well white! And the blacks are truly black!)
- Exynos S Octa cpu (two quad core cpus vs one quad core in the pro)
- 3gigs ram
- sd card support up to 128gb
There are my reasons. If you can afford the extra, what is it now, like $50? I would go for the Tab S over the Pro!
I watch bunch of youtube videos and ended here

£100 price difference here if it was only £30 I'd defiantly go for the Tab S
Right now in the states on BedtBuys website, the tab pro is $329.99.
Just in case anyone did decidd to get the pro.

If its like the 10.5 your going to get a shock if you don't like over saturated colors, at least when you first switch it on, luckily the Basic profile isn't too bad it actually tracks pretty accurate but its still a touch over saturated.
There is a way to get a degree of adjustment as far as over saturation goes but you might find it effects other things, contrast etc.

i was in bahrain yesterday and managed to check out both sizes (only LTE versions) and wow indeed the screen is as good as they said it was. there was a demo video with a red lobster, i paused it and it looked like it was painted on or something.
wish they would sell the wifi versions only i dont really need the LTE

I was in the same situation, had the Tab Pro 8.4 and gave that to a family member and bought myself the Tab S 8.4. Finding similar things like better batter on the Pro, however the AMOLED screen is just gorgeous and also I much prefer the speaker placement on the Tab S for watching movies (proper stereo placement).

Future buyer... 8.4 S or 8.4 S2? / battery question

Hi guys how are you doing?
I really want to get a bronze 8.4 model, but am wondering if I should hold off until the S2 or pick
up the S. I know its subjective and the S2 isnt out to compare against, but what would you guys consider?
I also read many threads about the poor battery life, which I suppose depends on the user.
Does Lollipop improve overall battery life or perhaps a certain custom rom?
Thanks for your advice!!
The only question I'm going to answer is that the battery life is fine on the t805. 8hrs +.
Possibly less on your model.
Well the biggest difference for me is the S1 has an 16:10 aspect screen and the S2 is supposedly an 4:3 aspect screen the same as the iPad, The display is the most important feature for me as in video`s so i would never buy the S2 if it does come with an 4:3 aspect screen.
Some people say the battery life from v.4.4.2 to v5.0.2 is better, when some say it is worse.
John.

Scratched up Tab S 8.4 or Pristine Tab Pro 8.4?

I picked up a used Tab 2 8.4 a couple of weeks ago locally, it is a bit beat up physically (minor screen scratches, case scratches and a small chip on bottom right). It works great (for $100 I couldn't resist).
However, it being a bit beat up physically has me considering buying a pristine Pro 8.4. I am sure I can sell my current one for between $120-$150 pretty easily, so, it would only cost me $30-40 to make the switch.
The question is, would it be a significant downgrade? From what I could find, I know it would have 1GB less ram and not a Amoled display but it seems the display is still very good and the CPU benchmarks is actually higher for the pro, especially when not using videos.
My big concern is the battery difference (although it seems to not be as big of an issue if not watching videos (which I won't be).
Thoughts on making this switch? If it was you, would you?
Thanks
Battery life on the pro 8.4 is about 10 hours, less if you do heavy gaming or videos or use full brightness, the display pixel-wise is better on the Tab Pro but it is power-hungry, tab pro 8.4 also has the snapdragon 800 which is faster then the cpu in the Tab S, I rarely run into memory issues with 2 GB of ram but that could change at any time.., Snapdragon base devices also have better 3rd party firmware support, where the Tab S uses Samsung proprietary Exynos SOC making it hard for 3rd party developers to work with/support.
But on the flip side, the Tab S so far has been getting better support from Samsung with a newer Lollipop firmware (5.0.2), better battery life (assumabley), a fingerprint scanner, the tab S is also slightly smaller in height then the tab pro.

Thanks for the information, it doesn't sound like there is a huge difference between the two so I think i'll give the Pro 8.4 a try.
