Easiest way to Root without htcdev?? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Bell Canada HTC One M8 and just need root, no need for bootloader unlock, custom recovery or S-Off just root for some apps I have. Owned htc phones before and know the process of htcdev but want to avoid it to keep my warranty active.
Tried weaksause but it just FC's any other tricks?

I don't think it's possible to get root without unlocking the boot loader as you need to install/boot a custom recovery.

well weaksause allows temp root which is all I need.

Which is for Verizon models and you already said it's not compatible.

Your only option is firewater temproot.
If it doesn't work, then you have to use htcdev.

ahh cool I'll try that, will the phone get wiped like when you unlock from htcdev?

any method you choose unlocking the bootloader will wipe your device. If you manage to get s-off you can always revert to 100% stock rom with warranty.

cool thanks, just gotta find win8.1 htc drivers. the one in hasoon toolkit don't work on my 64 bit win8.1. never installed htc sync or any of that crapware.
EDIT: installed the crapware and then uninstalled it but it kept the drivers.

As now we can unlock Wildfire S Bootloader I tried some ways to permanently root this device.
Gingerbreak seems not to work, however, Zerg rush does.
You either need an S-OFF device OR an S-ON device with unlocked bootloader

There is a VERY EASY way to root WFS now. I take no credits in writing any stuff related to rooting that, I just want to show how you can easily root the WFS and give newbies a first station to come to.
Please come here, and download HTC Supertools by frigid, give him a million thanks, download tools and run the supertools.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426276
Be sure to use HTC Supertool v3 (directly download here: http://www.multiupload.com/ZNGJ64FZDW)
1) Press 1 (Prep (using zergRush CREDITS to Revolutionary)) and Enter, zerg rush is now run
2) Press 3 (Attempt Perm Root (Must prep first)) and Enter, now the device will get rooted
3) type reboot and Enter to reboot your device.
Afterwards your WFS will be permanently rooted.
If you stuck rooting the device try this:
1) Press 2 and Enter, instead of 1
2) Press 3 (Attempt Perm Root (Must prep first)) and Enter, now the device will get rooted
3) type reboot and Enter to reboot your device.
I tested it with European latest Stock Rom 2.3.5 and HTC-Dev unlocked bootloader. I can confirm that a file could be copied to /system, then I rebooted again and the file was still there.

EDIT: I still have v2 and I see now that v3 is out.
1 and 2 are different ways to prepare the phone getting rooted.
3 does root the phone
4 is Attempt S-OFF, SIM Unlock, and everything else (Using gfree) but I did NOT test this menu entry, however, it would not work I think.
Yes,I see now.I had v2 and in v3 it is different.
Thanks.

It works with all S-OFFed phones and with all htc-dev bootloader unlocked phones. So either S-OFF with XTC-Clip or unlock bootloader at htc-dev.com.
However, there seems to be a problem unlocking US T-Mobile Roms bc there is no RUU yet to update hboot.
If rom manager works I don't know. I just tested permanent rooting
The unlocked bootloader method to root WFS
Th method given by HTC to unlock bootloaders does not allow a user to flash a custom ROM. So I guess S-OFF is still required. I have been testing it myself from past 8 hours now. If there is any other method then please do let me know.

It does allow custom roms. I read from a user he installed cm7 with s-on.
allowing custom roms is the sense of bootloader unlocking
Well, I have tried th direct flashing method by placing the file into the root of SD card and the Manager method. Both seem to show the same output, an image showing nothing but error note.

@theq86 I have been trying the same from past several hours, but I don't seem to find any positive hope.... I would be really thankful if u can help me in finding that methos using which one can flash a custom ROM with S-ON on WFS
well, sorry for asking but:
you surely did the bootloader unlocking process until the end, and your hboot says "UNLOCKED"?
For flashing roms please better refer to eoghan for I have not much experience.
Edit:
have you tried flashing via fastboot, too?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21104317&postcount=76
Well, rather than following any other methods given, I preferred to follow HTC's given method to unlock bootloader. I have seen it thoroughly and yes I hav access to root as well. Some root required apps are also running. But the main reason to unlock the bootloader was to overclock my phone's processor, which could not be done on the stock ROM of HTC. Hence I tried to flash CM7.0.2 and jikantaru's ROM as well, which he claimed to have made the stock ROM with sense allowed the overclocking.
If you still can find a better way to flash ROMs with S-ON, then we all would be greatfull to that user....
I updated main post, there is a link to the developers section. eoghan has made an easy installer for CWM, so that would make it very easy to install CM

[Q] What can be done with a rooted wildfire s?

Newbie here (go easy) lol OK basically I rooted via the HTC Bootloader website and other tools. Now What can I do with it basically? It is still got the S-ON Lock (which I guess is bad) I know it's unlocked to any sim but I understand my phone needs to be S-OFF to achieve real benefits?
when your phones rooted, it just means you have superuser access.
so your able to install custom roms (as you can see the list of diffrent roms) meaning you can install the latest build of android os. then you can install overclocked kernals (making your phone run faster or smoother). with other phones such as my nexus one iv install ubuntu (a linux operating system)
theirs so many diffrent things you can do on a rooted phone
S-ON S-OFF thing what does that mean? As I said My phone is still at S-ON Which I guess is not good
Your phone stay S-off like all people who unlock their phone on htcdev. But you can root and flash rom and kernel... There's always few thinks you can't do, but so usefully or necessary... AFAIK.
EDIT: sorry, would mean S-on

S-ON means that the "Security is ON" aka that your phone is "locked",
from htcdev.com:
Your device is shipped with Security on (S-ON) to protect your system
software configuration (such as the bootloader, radio, boot, recovery, system and others). After you have unlocked the bootloader, however, you will have lifted the restrictions on boot, recovery and system. This means you can customize boot, recovery and system images on your phone as you desire. You can easily see that you have successfully unlocked the bootloader by looking at the top of the screen when entering the bootloader screen. Security is left on to protect things like the radio, and SIM lock.

You can set your phone to S-OFF by using Bootloader or some other methods
EDIT: I didnt see Shywim's post, i needed few min to post this. xD
S-ON = Security On
S-OFF = Security Off
When S-OFF you have access to the /system partition
You can do a sdcard partition for your internal memory... There is a howto in the cm7 troubleshooting topic in the dev section

However you can unlock bootloader and root. as said in the link you gave.

Took me a while to get this replacement Wildfire back as it was due to a major hassle with HTC in the first place I just need to get my memory issues sorted and I sure i'm good
Went out and bought a 16GB Micro SDHD Memory card from ebay with an adapter included. When that comes i'll have fun (as I think I got a rough idea what rom I putting on to the phone) Prey to god it actually works!
There's lots of conflicting info on this thread..
Rooted means superuser access, think of it as administration rights on your mobile. You can install more powerful apps to your phone linked link2sd. You also gain write access to the system directories of the phone, and can delete system apps.
S-off means your bootloader is unlocked. This is required to flash custom rom's onto the device.

That's not correct, S-OFF does not stand for unlocked bootloader.
And you don't need S-OFF for flashing custom ROMs.

S-OFF means EVERYTHING is unlocked including your bootloader. It is complete access to all areas of the phone, also allowing you to flash any RUU ROM you want and many other things.
HTCDev Unlock - Unlocks your bootloader only allowing you to flash custom recoveries, ROMs, and root your phone. It has limitations though.

I have been searching and found the way to downgrade and root to get s-off but my question is that at this moment I was just wanting to do it to run GameCIH 2 to mess with a few games I have(have a lot of time on phone) but says i need root access. I understand HTVdev.com has the way to unlock the bootloader but it keeps s-on must i go through the multiple tutorials to achieve s-off to run this program? also if i do go through doing all this is there a way to bring it back to stock in case something happens to the phone i dont want to shell out a few hundred bucks for a new one.(i do understand there is always a chance at bricking it) anyway thanks again for any incite.

Just to clarify - with an unlocked bootloader and S-ON, you can still flash ROMs. Especially if you're already out of warranty, all you need to do is the HTCDev unlock process.
So S-ON just means you can't use PC36IMG.zip method for flashing recoveries, radios, etc., but fastboot, correct?

You can use the PC36IMG.zip method to flash a recovery, but the file has to be prepared specifically for it to work. As far as the other stuff goes, please see the post above this one .

root without breaking warranty

Can anyone point in the right direction in rooting the m8 without breaking the warranty or unlocking the bootloader?
Rooting without breaking warranty is what we all dream off. Want to bring the phone back to 100% stock you need s-off so you can return bootloader tampered flags back to normal.
S-off is only available via sunshine !
ok have learnt basiclaly sunshine need to be done to unlock the bootloader. However sunshine needs root access to work and it says come here to find out how to get root access. I personally dont care for soff all i want it root.
What are the methods to gain root. Dont care about soff.
is htcdev method the only way? As htc would have a permanent record you have requested your code. Doesnt seem like a great idea imo. Are there any other methods to gain root?
Can this device be rooted without unlocking the bootloader?
Nope, thats the only way.

For previous OS version, there was an option in sunshine to temp root, s-off, and unlock the bootloader. And from there you can install custom recovery and perm root.
But no such temp root exploit has been found for newer (Lollipop) OS versions, unfortunately.
I really hate the idea of having to unlock the bootloader just to root and also giving your imei to htc. The HTC looks like a complete ball ache to get back to stock also.

Root, Bootloader Unlock, S-OFF M7 Help?

Hi Everyone! I have a HTC One M7 with Verizon and am looking to unlock bootloader, S-OFF, as well as root mainly. I have tried Sunshine which tells me I have to root first. I have also tried, Kingroot, Moonshiner and most of all of the other programs.Upon looking up this I found I need to unlock my bootloader. To do this I need to S-OFF. I didn't catch HTCDEV in time to unlock the bootloader since Verizon blocked it so I would appreciate anyone who could help me root, unlock the bootloader and S-OFF. Thanks! I forgot to add, I am running HBOOT 1.6.1.

If you're on lollipop, pretty much only things I can think of that have worked are Kingroot (You have to try it MULTIPLE MULTIPLE TIMES) , N if that doesn't work on the latest version, try older versions (I remember old versions working for a few ppl, I believe it was like version 4.5 or 4.50.-something). The way kingroot works, u have to run it like sometimes 10-20-30 times of it saying failed, and eventually it works. I successfully did it on 2 of my friends m7's... (Not my own, I Sunshined back on 4.4.2)
Then, when/if u get kingroot to work, run sunshine...
Alright I'll keep trying kingroot

Only other way for a vZw m7 is to find somebody who has a Java card, and make arrangements to ship / drive your phone to them, and they'll b able to S-off, bootloader unlock, & root it within 5 mins. Java cards from what I understand r VERY expensive, but over in the vzw M9 thread, there's a whole thread that's just/only for the topic of arranging to get your phone unlocked with a Java card owner, as Sunshine still to this day has never worked for the VZW variant of the M9. I know there are some VERY reputable and well known devs over there who would be willing to hook u up and have been doing it for others on xda for over a year now, (for quite cheap I understand) -although I highly recommend tossing em a donation at least for their troubles.... Maybe @dottat can point u in the right direction

Danngg.. I wonder if this is a result of Google's continuous security updates? When I ran Kingroot to temp root before running Sunshine, it rooted on like... the first or second try... this was also after I'd foolishly tried every single root exploit that were designed in the days of Android 1.x and Gingerbread, which might have weakened some security if it didn't break it completely.. The binaries are called psneuter and gingerbreak, if you wanna give it a shot. There's also Rumrush, Firewater, Towelroot... probably others that I can't think of. None of them are likely to give you root, but if you use all of them and then use Kingroot, maybe Kingroot will work. I would personally do that sooner than running Kingroot and having my phone reboot 300 times...
So, I guess all you can do is keep trying.
I have verizon htc one m7 and i want to root it i have tried
Kingoroot
Kinguser
Firewater
Rumrunner
Rootgenius

I did it as follows. I used KingRoot and obtained its form of root. Then I ran Sunshine, which requires that you first are rooted. Sunshine reboots mid-process, losing root. So I ran KingRoot again, obtaining root. Then I ran Sunshine and it took up where it had rebooted, and got s-off. Then I found a script to eliminate the KingRoot temporary root. It did not exactly fit my file system, so I by hand made all of the changes indicated in the script (some of the changes in the script were not really important, some referred to files I did not have, etc., but I was able to change the important ones.) When I rebooted, I got the SuperSu pop-up to update, which I did, and ended up with a Verizon M7 with unlocked bootloader, s-off, and rooted.

Here are two sites I had left in my bookmarks:
http://zidroid.com/how-to-get-ride-and-replace-kinguser-with-supersu-app/
https://androidmtk.com/replace-kinguser-with-supersu
You could probably find more.
The only way this worked for me was to read the script and figure out what the critical replacements are. You should note that the critical steps involve files that have the immutable bit set, and the scripts show a two step process of first changing the immutable bit, and then deleting the file. I did these by hand, since some of the files that needed replacing were not in the sub-folders indicated in the scripts.
HI, fellow m7vzw user here. Let me share my experience. Around mid 2015 last year HTC released an update for lollipop that patched kingroot to be used to root its device. But all hope is not lost as you can doengrade back to the version of lollipop that is vulnerable to Kingroot exploit. I discussed this method last year around October with some other htc one m7 vzw owners. One of them pointed out that as a failsafe in case something went wrong with htc's firmware, it can be downgraded back ONE version to avoid that faulty firmware. For example if they release a version in January, February and March (March firmware being faulty as example). You can downgtade back to the previous firmware using fastboot and the required firmware files. We never tried to downgtafe again from Febraury to January because when we were already rooted and s-off after one downgrade ???.All files on links for the files are located on the Verzion HTC one forum..... i'll try to find the post containing proof for you.
