[Q] Help to restore my waranty - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I recently bought a htc one M8 to a french company which import them from Poland.
I unlocked the bootloader of my phone with HTCDEV, I flash twrp, and I rooted the phone.
Today, I have a problem with the duo camera, when i run the camera, a pop up comes to say that the duo camera is covered and I need to pull my finger somewhere else but i have this from a week and nothing is in front of the camera.
So the reseller said that I need to make work the waranty of the phone to solve the problem.
Of course, i can't use the waranty because my Hboot is unlocked.
I read this Thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708571
To relock the bootloader. I read that I t would work for me.(I'm s-on for the moment but I think I will be able to find a tuto to s-off )
I just fine this thread to remove tampered flag :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708565
I didn't read all commentarys but it seems to works.
But i'm wondering what else should I do to restore waranty, I read that flash the ruu will be ok but I think my phone don't have the international rom because there isn't super eco battery mode and when I ask on an other forum someone answer me that was because I got a Polish phone.
Could somewone guide me? Is my request possible? In what order apply tutos? Where download polish RUU?
Sorry if the english is bad..
Thx,
Allan

[GUIDE] Return your M8 to 100% Stock Follow the instructions in that thread, it'll be the same for most devices just use the correct software applicable to your phone. You need to be S-OFF to achieve the removal of tampered banner and other goodies.
So first thing you'll need to do is get S-OFF, you could either try the old Firewater S-OFF method found here: Firewater S-OFF Instructions it worked on most devices but the newest patches released by HTC blocked it. If it doesn't work for you you can try [Android][HTC S-OFF] SunShine for modern HTC devices . It should make you S-OFF fore sure however it costs $25 through an in app payment method. It's "per" device, so if you pay $25 to S-OFF and they give you a new phone you'll have to pay another $25 to S-OFF the new one... Worth considering though if firewater doesn't work...
After you get S-OFF just follow the general instructions in the Guide provided above and you should be set to go :good:
What is your software version number, I don't see it on the pic? Are you still on stock ROM, if so check in settings >>> about >>> software information.
I'm not familiar with the various different main-versions that comes from Poland. If we can get the version you're on it'll make things a bit easier. Having said that here is the thread with a lot of nandroid backups that you can look into as well COLLECTION of Stock backup's

Yeah that's for T-Mobile Poland...
Well if you're still on Stock ROM then you only need S-OFF to remove the tampered banner, show bootloader as locked and you'll also need a stock recovery, which might be a bit more difficult to get. I've seen a few people on here asking for it and not sure if they found it yet or not I also don't think there's an RUU available for it...
There is a TWRP Stock Nandroid in this guy's post, don't know if it includes the stock recovery though.
CID T-MOB009 - 1.57.118.2 TWRP ( hboot 3.16)
Direct link: Mega Uploads link for 1.57.118.2 TWRP

Well,
My phone is S-off, I don't really thing about consequences because it cost me 25$ and I start looking for T-Mobile Poland stock recovery AFTER.
And it's hard to find... Lots of result for the m7.This post appeared often ans by curiosity, I type " m8 T-Mobile Poland", this post appeared in fisr page... I will continue but if someone have it, i would be great to tell me where I can get it !
Edit : Do you think T-Mobile from other country could work? Germany? Thxs!
Edit 2 : I found this Thread on polish forum : http://forum.android.com.pl/f1288/kolekcja-backup-ruu-ota-416860/
On the first post, in the signature, we can read : Backup : CID T-MOB009 - 1.57.118.2 TWRP (HBOOT 3.16)
I'm not sure to understand everything with google trad but do you think it's a full backup with the recovery and i can use it ?

That's the exact same link I shared with you already. I think it is the full backup(Not sure about Recovery though) as I tried to download it on my phone and it's a big file. You can just download it to PC though and open the .zip file and make sure everything is there, boot.img system.img radio.img etc If it's just a TWRP on its own I don't think there will be a recovery.img, hopefully there is though. I didn't download it fully myself, on data plan and not going to spend it downloading a 1gb+ file that isn't even applicable to me
As for the T-Mobile from another country. You can convert to any device once you're S-OFF(Apart from the obvious CDMA vs GSM so Verizon/Sprint won't work I think) so you could flash T-Mobile Germany(will have to change CID/MID I think MID might be the same though) yes, BUT, you probably won't get OTA updates then and will probably have to download the OTA updates as they are released and collected(at xda for example) and then flash it manually.

Oh, I'm sorry... Well à donwloaded it and I think this is not good, in the ?zion there is :
boot.emmc.win
boot.emmc.win.md5

data.etx4.win
data.etx4.win.md5
recovery.log
system.ext4.win000
system.ext4.win000.md5
system.ext4.win001
system.ext4.win001.md5
This is just a TWRP, right?
About flahs T-mobile Germany RUU, would it permit me to make the waranty works?
Edit : If I found someone with the same software number than me, I would be able to do the backup, right? I find this :
How do i backup the stock HTC recovery ?
Boot the custom recovery, preferably with Philz touch recovery as it will back up the stock recovery for sure, you need the following command to boot it and not flash it over the stock recovery :
fastboot boot recovery_filename.img
Then make a full nandroid backup, the stock recovery is located inside the backup folder

But I don't understand, they said boot the custom recovery with an other recovery? oO Are you able to explain it to me ?

Yes that's a TWRP backup, like suspected though, no recovery.img file to go back to stock recovery.
German RUU - You could convert device to German T-Mobile sure, will it pass warranty? If you're very lucky and they don't look deeper into this then sure, I suppose it could pass. Though somehow I doubt that'll happen
Same software number...? Is this physical access to a phone that has the same software as yours or did you get it online somewhere? I don't understand your edit part there... But regardless, you can make a backup of his device yes or ask him to do it or if he already made a backup with CWM/Philz Touch then it'll help a lot too as it'll have the recovery.img. I won't say much more about this though..need more clarity from your side about that...
They don't boot a recovery with another recovery, they boot the custom recovery from fastboot in order to make a backup of the system + stock recovery. You should have done this before you flashed a custom recovery as well, preferably with CWM/Philz Touch Recovery. If you're going to use TWRP then you'll first have to manually "dump" the recovery as a backup, if you use Philz, Philz could at least have made a backup of the stock recovery.
But yeah, you can boot into a custom recovery. Connect the phone to the device, reboot into bootloader, open command prompt change directory to where adb.exe is. Type in fastboot boot name_of_custom_recovery.img then you can make a backup of system including recovery(IF you booted Philz/CWM) .
It's a bit too late for you now though, you already flashed a custom recovery which over wrote the stock you had.

Reboot your phone into bootloader mode (Volume Down + Power button)
Connect Phone to PC
Open command prompt in adb folder
Type fastboot devices to make sure device is connected.
Type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img - It should be recovery.img I don't think anyone would change the name of the recovery.
Type fastboot reboot - Phone will reboot back into OS.
Recovery is flashed and you can do updates. Of course the rest of your phone needs to be stock as well but seeing as you only mentioned the recovery now I take it that your phone is back to stock.

Ok, thx, but if I understand correctly, I have to dos this instead of ste the step 6 of the guide?
6. Flash stock FW package
Now your phone is back to 100% stock, we need to get the stock recovery back on the phone. To do this, you have to flash the 2.22.401.4 FW package from HERE. To flash this file, do the following:
a. Reboot phone into fastboot
b. Copy the FW file to your fastboot folder on your PC (if you don't have fastboot in your system path)
c. Rename the FW file firmware.zip (NOT firmware.zip.zip)
d. Type: fastboot oem rebootRUU and wait for device to reboot
e. Type: fastboot flash zip firmware.zip and wait for process to complete. Although you don't have to do this twice as you used to do with RUU ZIPs, it's STRONGLY recommended that you run this command a second time after the first has finished to make sure it 'takes' properly
f. Type: fastboot reboot
The phone will now reboot

Nah it's not necessary, just flash back the stock recovery. You'll get the latest firmware for your device when you do the OTA update anyways and at least this way you know that things won't go wrong.
I think they included that method because the latest recovery.img file is already in the firmware package and flashing it will restore the recovery back. You can just restore/flash it normally and let the system update itself. Like I said above, not a lot can go wrong that way.

Thanks again for all you've done for me! you'r my hero!

Hi!
Well, I found time to do this!
- I restored my nandroid backup with the stock rom
- I reseted the tampered flag
-I reseted the Unlocked flag and now it's "Locked"
-I unrooted my phone
but I have a probleme with the recovery...
When I type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img", I get an error :
c:\miniadb_m7>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
target reported max download size of 1830711296 bytes
sending 'recovery' (15236 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.431s]
writing 'recovery'...
FAILED (remote: not allowed)
finished. total time: 1.440s
I did something wrong? The phone is int fastboot USB, the computer recognize it. For adb I use the miniadb_v1031, recomended in topics to remove tampered flags and to remove unlocked flag.
Can you help me with this ?
Thx!
Allan
edit : I also try to do "fastboot oem rebootRUU" before trying flash recovery.img!

[Q] Problems with installing blackout ics ROM Desire HD

So I decided to root my android desire hd phone and avail the benefits of blackout ics rom on my phone.
This is how I approached.
I unlocked the bootloader from HTC Dev.
I have the adb with me, adb devices, adb restart bootloader are working absolutely fine and cell phone was detectable.
I downloaded the aahk and blackout rom from xda forums.
But I am not able to use the aahk properly. It says in instruction to do a fastboot flash boot boot.img from command prompt with the source being the place where aahk is placed on the PC. But it still doesn't work, and probably this is the root cause of the issues I am facing.
I tried downloading the CWM to boot into recovery, but that also gave me an error stating cannot find the adbwinapi.dll file.
So after that, I did a factory reset of my cellphone and truly I got my first success and I was able to get into the bootloader and recovery.
I can reach to the bootloader screen (white screen+3 andro dummies), but when I select the fastboot option It says cannot find image(which image, is it referring to boot.img). I deleted the cache on my cell phone, but again things are pending from here on.
The description on this screen says S-ON and some other things. Does that mean the security is still on?
I have the rom loaded on the sd card with renamed to update.zip, but when I select update option from the recovery it again says cannot find image, rebooting!(what image this is referring to).
And after all this sequence I am down with a cellphone now degraded to froyo from ginger bread and back to stone age!
Please advise.

You have not done anything fine...anything at all. My advice is that you'd better start reading hard buddy or you will end up with a 300 bucks paperweight.
Use the guide in my signature to start.
Tip 1:If you really downgrade to froyo and you were running gingerbread, you might have messed the bootloader..can you boot in hboot in normal times or takes ages?
Tip 2:The Hack Kit can not be run with an unlocked bootloader...that is what the manual says. The manual is there just to avoid this.
If your bootloader is still unlocked, then you have to install CWM recovery, put the rom in the sdcard (no rename is necessary) and then flash the boot.img from where that file is located (I usually put in the PC desktop) and not from the Hack Kit folder.
Then, from CWM flash the rom normally and you will be up and running.
Unlocking the bootloader will not give you S-OFF....

I had this tutorial open side by side in your signature while I was doing it. (the noob one)
I can go into Hboot normal times.
I am writing it down here from the main website from where I downloaded the aahk. And it says
Unlock the bootloader using the HTC DEV bootloader unlock process.
Download att-ace-30-isboot.zip and unzip it (don’t forget to check MD5)
fastboot flash boot boot.img
relock bootloader
But just now you told me that it should not be run on an unlocked bootloader! I am a little confused.

No problem. Get a working phone and then you can try to run the Hack Kit...but it has to be stock or otherwise will not work. :good:

I am not sure if you are on right now, but i am giving a try to the steps mentioned by that gentlemen above in the link.
the phone is now stuck at signature verification. I reasearched for it but could not find a viable solution or an exploit that can overcome it(though everyone seems to be suggesting to install CWM recovery)
Not taking any chances to convert my phone into a brick! Whats the best way.

ok, Have you managed to unlock the bootloader? if you are already unlocked, do you mind if I have a look at it over teamviewer?

I am following the steps sequentially as mentioned in that link by sashank. The bootloader is partially unlocked due to the HTCDEV process.
Couple of other things that I noticed. The android version is still at 2.3.5 however the device was shipped with Froyo. My mistake to have said that it is downgraded to froyo when I did the factory reset.
The facebook for HTC Sense thing is jacked up big time, I cannot find that in peoples app.
The device has (believe me) gained speed. pretty strange.
Once I reach home 3 hours from now, i'll update this thread and we can connect through Teamviewer so that you can have a look.hope thats cool!
Thanks

Bricked HOX

Yep, got it bricked. No, don't think it can be sorted out on my own.. unless someone knows how to revert neccessary partitions to rw, they seem to be all in read-only mode except cache. Have only bootloader/recovery available.
Since I'm guessing that if I send it to the repair, they will change the mainboard, as usual.. my questions are, what's the price/how much did you pay for it, and where are you from?
How did you end up in such situation? A RUU might do the trick. If you do not have an S-OFF HOX then it should be recoverable.
I can try flashing a RUU only if I can somehow do it without a relocked/locked bootloader. I don't have S-off HOX.
Trip had a faulty kernel 004 that came along with the his latest CM10.1 (do NOT worry, faulty kernel is no longer available for download, so you're as safe as you can be with your rooted phones) which caused a couple of ours devices, including his own, to brick. Some of them got into APX mode, some didn't, but the result is pretty much the same - I don't know which exactly but lets say that most if not all partitions are now read only.. so far only cache partition seems to be fine. Fastboot appears to have gone through with locking the bootloader successfuly, but that is not the case. Any attempts to copy over a ROM or any kind of file through mounting the phone as USB doesn't stick upon the next reboot, only those files that were available before are still there, and unable to delete.. and ofcourse, flashing anything isn't possible in read only.
Recovery?
Which recovery are you using?
I was using a version of CWM which had USB mount issues, updated and was able to push files from the laptop to the phone.
May be worth looking at?

Oh yeah, I saw that some ppl got bricked by his kernels/roms. You had really bad luck mate...
Trip said he bricked his bootloader on purpose to get his handset fixed for free, and guess what, he got a new mainboard free of charge. Ask him how he'd do it.
Sent from my One X
I gave a shot at bricking the bootloader intentionally but no success, I guess any kind of changes you try to apply to a read only simply doesn't stick, as intended.. can't even remount as read/write.. so back to the original question: 1.) What did you pay for your mainboard replaced? 2.) Where are you from?
The saddest thing is that HTCs centre in Serbia is in Belgrade, and I'm in a distant place, so I actually had to give my phone to the carrier first, and they will send it to HTC.. so any attempt at trying to manouver them by saying that I have been running the ROM/Kernel without any issues with an unlocked bootloader fails, as all they need to do is enter the hboot and the warranty becomes void.
for me with apx mode ... i sent my device to htc and after 2 days ( today ) they called me to pick my phone with new mainboard and all is free
so u are in the same problem so u should try steps we used to get into apx mode and then send it to htc to replace ur mainboard for free if u still in warranty
i think u read all comments in trip kernel thread so it's easy to get into apx mode with read only devices
Did you try reflashing your bootloader ? that deletes a lot of custom stuff in the process
if it works then you might be able to format /data and /system from your custom recovery
OH, and btw if you brick your bootloader(or APX), HTC can simply unbrick it and find all your nasty work(but it seems they didn't notice it yet)
here are instructions if interested
find your current boot.img(it gets deleted in the process)
find your current custom_recovery.img(it gets deleted in the process)
re-lock bootloader: Fastboot oem lock,
reboot to ruu: fastboot oem rebootRUU
flash firmware.zip fastboot flash zip Link/to/firmware.zip
then unlock like first time you did it, Fastboot flash unlocktoken Link/to/unlock_code.bin
restore boot.img: fastboot flash boot boot.img
restore recovery: fastboot flash recovery custom_recover.img

i don't think so .. as if they were able to unbrick it, they will do for sure and won't change mainboard for free

I cannot reflash anything, I guess because even the partition where the bootloader is becomes read only. Fastboot oem lock doesn't relock or lock the device for me, and fastboot oem rebootRUU just does a normal reboot. There's literally no changes that I can apply. I guess it would be impossible for me to brick the bootloader as well because of this problem. HTC can get into APX mode easily, yes, but they cannot unbrick the bootloader.
It can be easily solved by flashing a new rom and recovery using android download tool (ADT)
my phone has bricked a hundredes of times an I only soved it using this method
HIT THANKS IF I HELPED
I don't think he can flash stuff with nearly all partitions r/o.
Sent from my One X
Please read. Partitions are read-only in my case. Unless ADT can flash partitions and repartition as intended for HOX, I would have use of it.
Dont go such deep just download any ADT flashable rom and flash it using ADT not ADB

lol. I'm fairly certain the only thing that stands any chance of helping us is signed HTC Diag files + Javacard or a route to S-off using APX mode.
Anyway, where to next: I can get a replacement HOX motherboard of unknown quantity from eBay for £150...If I do that, do I keep it, or flog it and get something else...? Or do I just sell the good LCD from my HOX to somebody who's broken theirs? (Can't flog the whole phone for parts, it's got all my data on it)
I don't really want an HTC any more after this experience.
Okay, I think I need to revise my plan of trying to have my HOX fixed without getting charged.
Can they prove a non-stock kernel is faulty for rendering all partitions read-only if I'm not in the APX, or they're not really going to go into such details and look at the kernel's code and find where the problem is within it?

china mobile TD-LTE version m8t - flashed recovery while S-ON

hi everyone,
i think i am having a somewhat larger problem. i got the TD-LTE version of the m8 (called m8t) today, and i went ahead and unlocked the bootloader, and flashed a custom recovery WITHOUT doing a backup.
now, the initial splash screen gives a warning message (see pictures) message and i am stuck in the bootloader.
i was looking for a stock recovery ... but didn't find anything (yet)
the idea was to try to get the GPE rom onto this, and i was prepared to possibly see it bricked at that point, but forgetting S-OFF is a bit ... humiliating.
<edit>
i just realized: there isn't even a proper question in my post, so here it is:
can anyone help me out with this? what should i do?

Will your phone boot or not have you got recovery
If you are worried about the red writing don't be it's normal when you root if you get s-off you can remove it

it will not boot, because the s-on prevents it. i did:
Code:
$ fastboot erase cache
Code:
$ fastboot flash boot philz_touch_6.25.5-m8.img
Code:
$ fastboot reboot
and that's how i ended up there.
one question i would have is - do i need to flash the recovery back to whatever was on there before? or would a ruu stock do? could i run into trouble for flashing a "regular" LTE stock rom on a tdd LTE phone?

I believe there are no RUUs available yet!
seems like you soft "bricked" your M8 TD because you flashed the recovery as kernel so if you dont have a backup of your kernel you will have to send in your device for repair because no RUU is avaible for any M8 you can try to ask someone with unlocked bootloader and the same m8 type (china mobile) to make a backup of his kernel and send it to you !

What weird advice is that.....
@ the OP.
Get the rom you wanted on it, reflash the custom recovery first :
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
and flash the boot.img of the custom rom you want :
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
That sorts the partitions and then head over to the recovery and do a full wipe and install the rom.zip
To put the rom on the phone you can mount it as a usb disk drive in the recovery.

i did this. it's not great, it still doesn't go into recovery, and it also doesn't boot normally. HOWEVER: i am thrilled to report that at least SOMETHING changed.
i still have the "tampered" banner at the top, which is, i assume, because it STILL is a wrong kernel. but when i try to go into fastboot, it says "entering recovery" for a second, and then goes back into the bootloader. before that, it would take ages, then show a red triangle.
does anybody have other, "stock" recovery and/or boot images?
if i buy a second one (exactly the same, chinese version), how difficult is it to extract those from it? not that i am looking forward to spending another 800USD .... just weighing my options here.
The exact same issue
Hello bro, i have the exact same issue, i didnt know i had to have a TWRP (recovery flash thingy for china mobile) so i just used one i found online while following instructions and i got the same problem, my phone does start after i click reboot on the fastboot mode, but again i am stuck with the SINA WEIBO login which is what made me want to root it on the first place, i went ahead and talked to a chinese tech and he gave me a file that he said would install all the google apps which is what i want (I NEED GOOGLE PLAY AND GMAIL) but since the kernel i installed is wrong, then the phone just reboots and goes straight to fastboot mode, which doesnt let it complete the installation of the google apps!
have you been able to solve your issue?

I have the correct recovery.img for the M8t now - I have rooted my own China Mobile 4G phone. However, I don't know how to upload the file or how to get a backup of the original boot.img Happy to help if one of you can tell me what to do. The website with the recovery on is in China and is sometimes OK, somethimes not - AND you need to register on the forum to get the file - not easy for non Chinese people! (like me!)
Hi, It seems that you flashed a custom ROM on the htc one m8t without S-OFF!! You can only flash ROMs that are branded for M8T (China mobile TD), because the custom kernal will not be flashed and youll be stuck at bootloader screen.
If you need to add google apps to your handset you follow the instructions on the thread link below, until then you CAN NOT flash other custom ROMS until a solution to make the M8T S-OFF is discovered (I tried Firewater and it did not work, but the chinese has made a hardware solution for S-OFF of M8T:laugh.

in the meantime, a few weeks ago, i have found someone on taobao who had the stock ROM. this should by now be publicly available. and he also s-offed it for me. he claimed that (at that time) only very few other people would've been able to do that. he used a gold card.
but as we all know, this is just a matter of time - sooner or later, everything ends up in the open.

[Q]How can I get back to stock from a custom rom?

I recently got my HTC One M8, and I was trying to follow a tutorial on htc-one wonder how to (I cant link it). It links to other tutorials for pre-requisits, and I fell down the rabbit hole trying to get pre-req after pre-req. I spent about 2 days non stop on this and I'm pretty sure I screwed up pretty bad.
I'm think I wrote the recovery image to the boot sector by accident...or something like that
What I have:
1. . My computer recognizes my phone in fastboot. I can transfer files to and from. I am not sure if adb works.
2. I can access TWRP by hitting "Recovery" in fastboot. I think this means I have a custom recovery successfully installed.
3. The InsertCoin rom (insertcoin-m8_5.0.6_ART) is installed and I can boot to it. I was not going to keep it, but I needed it for one of the steps. Wifi does not work so any files have to be added manually via usb.
4. My bootloader is unlocked
5. I have S-ON
6. I have Minimal ADB and Fastboot installed and it works. I also have Hansoon200's All In One HTC One M8 Toolkit
7. This is a brand new phone so I don't care about my data.
I'd like to get back to stock so I can try to run Firewater (will not work without internet. Wifi is broken on the rom) and get S-OFF (needed for Google Play Edition). How can I go about this?
I apologize in advance, I've been at this for days. I wouldn't post unless I was really stuck. I appreciate any help you can provide. I will gladly provide any additional information
Thanks

couple of things ... firewater is over it no longer works. Sunshine will most likely s-off your phone (for $25)
If TWRP works it's not on the wrong partition. you have no wifi becouse you did not update your firmware .. it says this in every rom thread.
so your steps now are find the nandroid and stock recovery to go back to stock Here > COLLECTION of Stock backup's

So I'm going through that thread, and I think I know what to do. The main problem is finding the correct files. Then I use the terminal, fastboot getvar version-main the result is blank and fastboot oem readcid returns SPCS_001. However there does not seem to be a Nandroid matching those values. Any ideas?

I was on latest stock nougat before I started the process. since the I have tried flashing both leedroid marshmallow zip and the nougat magisk zip also. and what's the deal with s-off?
Everywhere i look they're all how to's about s-off lol. seems hard to find a thread on what s-off is, if it's needed to for a specific ROM or not :/ that being said leedroid it wasn't needed as quoted below. thanks!
If you wish to s-off first, please follow >> THIS GUIDE << by @jcase & return when your device is back up and running.
First boot will take approximately 15 minutes due to Art optimization

hmmmm according to that post the TWRP i flashed should have reverted on reboot and that hasn't been the case at all since it has survived multiple reboots... any thoughts on that?
"...Basically, all changes made to these partitions while the phone is running is not permanent, and will be reset upon a reboot..."
EDIT: also does that mean unless I have S-off none of the custom ROMs will flash? so what's the point of unlocking a bootloader is that needs to be disabled also

Keep in mind the date on that post is from a few years back (2012). You can't put all your eggs into one basket, so to speak. I was just giving you 1 article I found from a simple Google Search. Encryption and TWRP have changed quite a lot, especially since Nougat.
From my small amount of time, I think you may be confused about what the difference is between an unlocked bootloader and S-OFF, which I'd need to even go back and read that article, but thought it touched a little on it
The 10 has changed quite a bit too from past phones. Before you'd need to be S-OFF and unlocked bootloader. Now S-OFF unlocked and S-OFF locked are basically the same, but that can be found in threads if you'd like to find more info on that.
Most the info is there, you just need to search. If you need help finding articles, I can try and help with that. I've been surprised with the great info I've found after awhile of coming up empty.
I'm just now seeing all the new posts that came from before I posted and have been on my phone and don't have the time to catch up on it all right now.
Hope things get squared away for you soon, I'll check in when I can.
It seemed you were in a simple bootloop, but I'm not 100%. I think your issue was flashing MM ROM on N firmware. Can't do that.
Also, Verizon doesn't allow us to unlock bootloader on Htc-dev. So if we want to root, we must S-OFF.

What method have you tried for the SW?
is it an RUU or just firmware?
I suggest the sdcard method.
Make sure to have the correct htc_fastboot.exe over the standard fastboot.exe, this could be the cause of your failure.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24545065934258327
Either remove your current fastboot.exe and rename this one to it, or keel it as htc_fastboot.exe and use the correct, htc_fastboot flash, over fastboot flash

bear in mind I'm still learning all this HTC stuff lol
is it an RUU or just firmware? It's an RUU.exe for HTC 10 unlocked edition that i got from there website
I suggest the sdcard method. you mean installing custom ROM zip from sd card? otherwise i'm not sure what you mean.
Make sure to have the correct htc_fastboot.exe over the standard fastboot.exe, this could be the cause of your failure. hmmm well I used fastboot.exe from minimal adb & fasboot to unlock bootloader and that worked fine, and should i still i just replace fastboot in platform tools folder with fastboot.exe from htc website?
also so s-off shouldn't be needed to install the ROMs? just bootloader unlock?

Keep in mind this is me helping in my free time.
Use the linked htc_fastboot.. It's made for htc, it's why I mentioned it..
I've seen many ppl have RUU fail by not using this.
Also an RUU/firmware have 3 methods to install.
I suggest the sd-card method. Safest.
Search. Search. Search. ...
Option 1
Copy 2PS6IMG.zip (THIS IS FOR VERIZON, YOUR CARRIER WILL NEED TO BE RENAMED CORRECTLY) to root of a physical SD formatted to fat32. No exfat! No internal storage! Must be external SD formated to fat32!
Reboot phone to download mode and follow prompts once RUU is detected by phone.
Option 2
EXE option. Download EXE file below (for windows) and simply double click to start. You can either be booted to OS with USB debugging enabled OR booted into download mode for this to start.
Option 3
Fastboot RUU mode . This method assumes you have a working ADB/Fastboot directory on your PC. Download RUU zip file and place in your working fastboot/adb directory. Boot your phone to download mode and connect to PC. Issue the following commands.
htc_fastboot oem rebootRUU
###while in this mode your phone will display an HTC logo on the screen
htc_fastboot flash zip 2PS6IMG.zip
##while in this mode you will see an HTC logo on the screen and a green status bar across the bottom of the screen. When command output ##completes it may say reboot required to flush etc... if that's the case issue a "htc_fastboot reboot-bootloader" command and restart option 1 again.
## assuming flash completes and no further flushing/reboots are requested from the cmd output you can now reboot IF you simply wish to reboot the system you can issue "htc_fastboot reboot" which will reboot system.
## expect a good 5 minute plus first boot!

Also read here. This is a great thread.
There's a lot of info out there.
Just search and do your homework.
It's easy to turn that device into a useless brick.
Especially being S-OFF... Secuirty-off..
I know it can be overwhelming, but the info is out there, and if not, just ask, as others most likely have the same question and this will help them.
And correct, with S-OFF isn't needed to flash ROMs. Only bootloader unlock.

my bad, i hope i didn't come off rude or anything. i do appreciate all your help and i understand it. I do the same here when i have the free time.
I will ask some question's on both those threads you linked. I came across one of them but no s-off and didn't wanna pay for sunshine app. also topjohnwu thread about stock and guides would be helpful if it listed which phones the code names correlate to.
in the end I see your point, keep researching and asking. and I do that very often and promise. today was different since a bunch of PC failed to install updates at work (post wannacry) lol and dealing with my bootlooping phone, my mind was scattered. iv'e bricked before but never on a phone this expensive *__*
thanks again andy!
JUST AN UPDATE: i restored via twrp after i got the bootlooping to stop. I completely forgot I had made one -__- (more scatter brains) so I'm good to go now.... kinda.

You didn't come off rude at all, I was actually hoping you didn't take my response as being rude. S-OFF and sunshine is completely worth the $25. However, for a normal user like yourself, you don't need it.
Glad to hear that you're somewhat good to go, lol.
You can always pm me or tag me in a post if needed and I'll do my best to help.

1st things 1st, SOS is no more. was trying to flash leedroid magisk file, thinking it was a ROM until i noticed the file size so I went back to stock via TWRP backup (i forgot I made) since RUU was giving 155 error.
2nd the HTC fastboot wasn't working for some reason.. adb devices cmd detected nothing, it worked at my job though since i have android studio/platform tools there (shrug) so used that fastboot instead.
3rd I did mean SW 2.48.617.1 that's the exact OS version # that download mode reports currently and was the last official update i took several days before going custom route.

Okay. Cool that you got it fixed. But you did say you were trying to update from 2.48.617.1 to 2.48.617.3, so that's why I said there was no .3
