[Q] Are ALL Nexus 7 LTE tablets SIM unlocked? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I have two Nexus 7 LTE tablets that I acquired from Craigslist. One came with a T-Mobile SIM card, the other is in a Verizon branded box and clearly came from Verizon retailer.
I was under the impression that ALL of the Nexus 7 LTE tablets are unlocked. However, when I boot the T-Mobile one, the bootloader shows a unlocked symbol at the bottom, however the Verizon one does not. I'm not sure if this is just Verizon trickery or not.
Would I be able to use the Verizon one on a GSM network? I assume the internal hardware is identical between the two.

The unlock icon at boot has nothing to do with carrier locking, that's if the bootloader was unlocked.

Was unlocked? As in, someone unlocked it and relocked it?

Yes you can use a Verizon one on a gsm network. I got a Verizon one on T-Mobile right now.

My Verizon sold N7 actually works with my T-Mobile unlimited PHONE sim. I only do that at home since I don't have a case for it yet, but I have sms through xposed, the T-Mobile visual voicemail, and Vonage for outgoing calls. Tethering also only shows as data used, not tethering. I've done this many times with no issues.

Unfortunately, can't be done as Verizon uses CDMA and ATT uses GSM. Means radios are completely different.

As stated above, Verizon and att use two entirely different networks. The radio hardware is different. Unless the droid dna is a gsm phone that should not be possible.

That phone is also GSM capable. At that point it's all a matter of the APN settings. It can not be done with the S3 on any carrier (swapping from CDMA to GSM)

I think you can get the Verizon S3 to work on AT&T (calls/text/edge data). I know you can do that on T-Mobile. But you won't be able to get the AT&T S3 to work on Verizon for two reasons;
1) The radio would need to be hacked to enable the CDMA radio, and the information needed to hack the radio is not available. The US variants all received the same radio chip, just some of the frequencies are turned off. For instance, the AT&T S3 wasn't able to get the t-mobile AWS band working until the guy working for t-mobile released some radio files. The AT&T/T-Mo S3s have the CDMA radio, but it's not enabled
2) Verizon won't allow the phone on the network, as the IMEI is not registered on their network. This is probably the most important reason. You would need to spoof the IMEI from another verizon phone, which is not something that can be discussed here.
You are better off switching with someone who has a Verizon S3, that wants an AT&T S3.

It will work with T-Mobile because it's a GSM network. The radio can't be hacked. It's a limitation of the hardware itself. It's 2 completely different pieces of hardware.
The sim card on Verizon phones is ONLY used to access Verizon's LTE, without that simcard you'd have regular 4G only on a Verizon phone. That sim card/or phones acts in no way possible as GSM accessible.
So no it will NEVER work regardless of what you do.
And don't fall for ads on the internet about any Verizon,Sprint, or any CDMA phone to work on GSM networks.

This is not entirely true for all Verizon phones. The DNA, S4, Note 2, LG G2 (among others) are sim-unlocked out of the box, and will work with AT&T/T-Mobile (the note 2 requires some hacking in order to add the APN settings). Also, as I recall, if I took the sim card out of my GNex and DNA, I did not have service. It would only allow for emergency calls. No talk/text/2G/3G.
For the Galaxy Nexus, the phone is 100% guaranteed to not work on any GSM network.

Read the first sentence
"Only to get Verizon's LTE"
Unlocked phones work "globally"
Which means you'd get Voice and EDGE/3G at the most from other GSM networks, given you've provided the correct APNs. Locked phones, which carry that sim card for Verizon's LTE ONLY. Either way only a few phones will work. The rest are useless.

No. They use the same hardware. Msm8960. It should support GSM CDMA WCDMA LTE and Td-scdma. Almost all the network. It's mostly because of the lock of the radio/nv.
Remember, the op is asking if he can use an at&t galaxy s3 on Verizon. It's not going to work.
IT WORKS

i can verify that i an running AT&T straight talk service on my sch-i535 (Verizon Galaxy s3)
I have had success using a Verizon sg3 mother board on att's network although I was only able to get 2g. What I did was rooted phone, ran region unlock app, next I let the phone sit for a day, then a did a factory reset from the phones menu not custom recovery. Then when going through the set up wizard it prompted me to insert sim card then it said it was not an approved sim and gave options to continue or finish, selected finish, said complete and about 3-5 mins after booting up I got signal bars and phone was working. Although the hardware used are different these are dual band phones.
Never give up keep trying

HTC One - Switching from Verizon to AT&T

Hello, It is my understanding that Verizon phones are unlocked. have an HTC One phone that I would like to switch from Verizon to ATT. When I put a new sim card in the phone, it seems the ATT network is being blocked. Any thoughts?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Verizon uses CDMA and AT&T uses GSM. The only way you'd be able to switch to AT&T with an unlocked phone if it was under T-Mobile.

[Q] Moving S4 from Verizon to iwireless/t-mobile

Hi,
I am thinking about moving my Galaxy S4 and moto RAZR from Verizon wireless to iwireless (a t-mobile affiliate). I understand that I need to unlock my phone but I am unable to find out if I move it to iwireless if I will still have 4G data. The iwireless sales rep said that I will still have voice and 2.5G service but couldn't tell me if I would still have 4G.
I was looking at this table I found on a site explaining how to unlock the phone but I don't know enough about the subject to make an informed decision.
Samsung Galaxy S4
Can someone confirm whether or not my Verizon S4 or RAZR can be unlocked to work with the iwireless/t-mobile 4G network?

It seems as though your grasp of the subject is strong enough to know that it might work as you'd like - and it might not. You need to call back and ask to speak to a CSR that actually knows what bands their service works on so they can give you accurate information. That's kind of their job...
Also -
Verizon LTE operates on Band 13 while T-Mob operates on Band 17, both of which carry completely different spectrums; this means no LTE on either of your unlocked phones. There's a slim possibility that you will get intermittent 3G but the most likely scenario is that you will get talk, text and 2G / 2.5G only.
Band 17? My Verizon branded S4 is getting T-Mobile LTE. I'm fairly sure its on band 4.
T-mobile is band 4 which is 1700/2100 mhz. The Verizon s4 is not capable of 1700mhz. But if you are getting 4G it may be because your area is using 2100 mhz. I am specifically moving to iwireless and I was told they use the 1700 mhz band.

Yes, I think all Verizon LTE capable phones are unlocked.
The I545 (Verizon S4) can receive LTE on band 4. T-Mobile serves LTE on band 4. The coincidence works well.

My RAZR MAXX HD definitely wasn't SIM unlocked... For the life of me I couldn't get it to work when I moved to ATT from Verizon... Not even GSM would work.
I just need to get some clarification from you guys. Are your VZW phones bought in the US and being in the US on t-mobile's or iwireless's 4g network. Because after I made the first post I went to the phone unlocking place in my local mall and talked to there techs, they said that the VZW S4 will not get 4g. I have also been doing extensive searches online and keep finding half saying it will work and half saying it won't. I have a feeling that the ones that work are working outside of the US as I found posts saying as such.
I read some where that the razr you had to flash the radio FW to get GSM to work properly.

I got my vzw S4 off craigslist but 99% sure it was purchased in the USA. I'm on T-Mobile's $50/mo plan.
Verizon's LTE phones are sim unlocked due to an agreement with the FCC when vzw purchased some bandwidth.
I think there was an update around 03/2014 that enabled band 4 on the I545. Then had to make some apn changes and tell the modem to use gsm/lte on band 4.
The one quirk I have is it will say "no service" after a reboot and until I make or receive a voice call. Then I get the "T-Mobile" instead of "no service" and things work as they should.

I'll have to go to iwireless and have one of the tech put a SIM card in my s4 and razr to give it a try.
The only options I have for the network mode on my s4 is
Global, LTE/CDMA, and GSM/UMTS. Can you post you settings?

I was just at iwireless today and tested my phone with their network and was unable to get it to work. iwireless is a t-mobile affiliate but they do not use 4G LTE in my area. Their system runs on a 3.8G 1700MHz which the VZW S4 does not have. I am told that they will be starting to switch all the 2G radios in the area to 4G LTE later this year, which should work with my VZW S4. So I am just going to have to wait till the end of the year and go back and test it again.

That phone was before VZW bought the band 4 spectrum and cut the deal with the FCC. All VZW LTE phones are SIM unlocked. Any AWS capable VZW phone is SIM unlocked and can use LTE on band 4. The S4 got it with an update last year.
I am probably going to do the $30 plan soon and plan to use my VZW S4. I am not going to port my number right away in case the service in my area sucks (doubtful, live in DFW in dense surburbia).
I went out off town this weekend and went to a t-mobile store and was able to get 4g service after adding the correct APN. But it is too bad that iwireless that is in my area does not use that band yet, they are staring to upgrade to that band later this year. Until then my s4 will only get edge service.

With the announcement of the T Mobile $100 2 line unlimited everything, I'm also interested in bringing my Verizon S4 MDK boot loader phone to T Mobile, but want to do my research first-- is it as simple as signing up for T Mobile and getting one of their SIMs and then-- would I be able to flash any of the ROMs in the S4 T Mobile Dev forum or is the T Mobile S4 a completely different device? Any caveats? Would I have to LokiDoki after the flash? Would I need to flash a T Mobile specific radio too (currently on i545vrufnk1)? Or is that all just overcomplicating things? Would i be able to just adjust the APNs on my current ROM after inserting a T Mobile SIM?

Quick reply to my post and for anyone else interested-- there's a post here that talks about using a 4.4.2 T-Mobile ROM by Fenny on the a Verizon S4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=57453019 I've tried it and LTE works great, MMS works properly, phone calls work as well. I'm on the Verizon i545vruamdk bootloader and Verizon i545vrufnk1 radio. The ROM is a T-Mobile m919uvufnb4 by Fenny.

[Q] How does cid or callers number show up when using non verizon SIM

Hey all,
Are any of you using your verizon Note 4 with another non-verizon Sim card? If so does the callers number show up correctly?
Just checking, as I currently use a verizon Note 3 and sometimes use it with a net10/att sim card. When I do this, all calls show up with a +1 country code as if I was using the phone internationally. I am considering getting the note 4 developer edition, but do not plan on keeping my verizon account much longer, so want the calls to show up properly without the +.
Thanks,
Chris
Must be nobody uses the Verizon variant with other US carriers??
It seems to me that at least Bandwise, that the Verizon versions of the Galaxy phones, especially the Developer editions when available are the best deal. As it works with pretty much all the gsm carriers as well as Verizon. I have used the S4, and the Note3 with Verizon, and ATT as well as several other GSM carriers. Only issue that I have when using them on gsm carriers is that the phone responds to incoming calls and messages as if the incoming number is an international call. Even if I am in the US, and the call is a US call the number comes in as +1-111-111-1111, instead of 1-111-111-1111.
I have been planning on dropping Verizon when my contracts all run out. I like the idea of being able to switch carriers at will. If I buy the Verizon variant then that leaves me with the ability to switch to any gsm carrier and Verizon, whereas if I buy the unlocked version I only can use it with the GSM carriers.
Best,
Chris

Question Sim unlocked

Way back in the nexus days, carriers would sell different branded nexus phones(Nexus 6) that they would claim only worked on their network but infact, once sim unlocked would work for all networks like the non carrier version. So you could buy Nexus 6 from Verizon and then put a T-Mobile sim in and get 4G LTE, etc and have no issues. My question is this, if I bought a pixel 6 pro from Verizon and got it sim unlocked, does it have the same bands/frequencies of the factory unlocked variant to use T-Mobile 5g, LTE?
Can't unlock the bootloader on Verizon so your best bet would be either from Google or other network
