I'm debating whether I should get the n900a or n900t. I want to root, which seems possible on the n900a with towelroot, but it would be nice to have the unlocked boot loader of the t mobile variant. However, I will be using the phone on ATT. If I buy a n900t from swappa, how easy is it to SIM unlock it for use on ATT? Would you buy the n900a or n900t of you wanted a rooted device to use on ATT? Thanks!

I will be buying all my phones from t-mobile or any other reputable source to use my unlocked bootloader phones on att. My buddy and I have att service, mine is unlocked custom ROM ran, and it just outperforms in battery, customization, and I have no bugs compared to his. Frankly though, it is preference. Do you like to run custom, or do you want to do what att tells you to?

Well I'm definitely not an ATT fanboy, but currently using cricket because att has the best GSM service around here. I'm using a Moto G with xposed/gravity box, along with nova launcher. So I think I would be happy with a rooted n900a, as long as I can freeze the bloatware and get my beloved pie controls. So I'd rather not have to spend the extra bucks for the n900t (buying used... ~$50-100 difference on Swappa), but I also don't want to regret being stuck with the locked boot loader...
I hear you. I run pretty minimal with the exception of tweaks. Use ADW launcher, uninstall all bloat ware, then make my phone look pretty. But the choice if kernels, init.d scripts, and being able to free up about 40% of the storage speaks volumes to me. Being able to run cm, aosp you get even more storage back.
I started with t mobile service and was happy while in city limits, but had to switch to att due to travels outside. They are bigger than Verizon where I live. Cricket has some good plans, but aren't you forced to purchase the phone outright? If this is the case, and you want options, might as will go with the one that allows for greater use.
The phone price is about the same, just one allows you to do more with it. Just a quick online search indicates that att full price phone is $764.99, and the t mobile variant is only $717.60.

No you can BYOP to Cricket, so I will be purchasing used. I can get the n900a on Swappa for ~$390 while the n900t runs ~$460. So I'm thinking if I will be happy with root getting me the Nova Launcher/Pie control/Adaway/app freeze experience that I am used to then there's not a big incentive to spend the extra money to be able to run custom ROMS that I currently do without anyway. However running a slimmer ROM and freeing up storage space is tempting.

I unlocked my n900t a couple weeks ag to use on straight talk on att towers. Couldn't unlock it without cellunlocker. So I did and it's unlocked now. Be careful buying off swappa and make sure you check that the imei doesn't have a payment still on it.

If you can ask the seller to provide proof they paid off the E.I.P., (equipment installment plan). That's what I did when I sold my At&t Galaxy note 3 (n900a). Actually I provided proof of payment in the description. So that potential buyers wouldn't have to request proof.
Of course that won't work if your ebay/swappa seller is a third party reseller.

I don't think T-Mobile version is that bad (if the bootloader is not locked). In addition, Wi-Fi calling is a nice feature you should have.
Moreover, EU and Asian versions DO NOT support both AWS HSPA and LTE. You can use PCS for HSPA in refarmed areas though.

Boot loader unlocked and SIM unlocked are two different things. Unlocked boot loader will allow you to flash custom recovery.

Hey, I actually like T-Mobile TV. But I only use the free trial. Every time I reinstall a new ROM I get the 1-week free trial. My friend watched 2 live tennis matches over 4G. The quality was very good (I think it was NBC stream) and it didn't even drain the battery as fast I thought it would. If they would lower the price a bit, or make it so that I could watch certain channels that I subscribe to with my DirecTV, then I would definitely use it more. It would be great for watching NFL/NHL games while i'm out of the house.
T-Mobile's bloatware really isn't that bad compared to some of the other carriers, and some of their apps are kinda useful. I think you can freeze and hide the apps that you don't want by using Titanium Backup.

Be aware of that:
Unlocked bootloader allows you to install non-official ROM, kernel, and recovery, but SIM unlock simply lets you use SIM from other carrier.

Yes the WiFi calling is essential on a T-Mobile phone. I live in the Atlanta area and have poor reception in many commercial/office buildings. At my last 3 jobs I had too poor a phone signal inside to reliably make or receive calls inside the building, but they all had open WiFi, so the WiFi calling saved me. It was important enough I sold my Nexus 4 to get a T-Mobile branded phone so I'd have WiFi calling!

T-Mobile phones have carrier IQ. Just freezing it alone will not stop it. If you reboot it unfreezes itself. Need to delete it. That is bloatware I could care less for.

This is painless to remove once you got your phone rooted.

i totally agree with you that this is legal. samsung warranty will be void.
if you are adding chinese language and sell it to chinese community, it would be nice to let them know which phone doesn't have warranty.
note3 and s4 has that nasty feature 'knox' unlike other samsung phones that dont have it.

I previously had a Note 4 for a day or two after release, coming from at that time, an iPhone. I subsequently returned the note, kept the iPhone, and recently upgraded to the 6+. Now with ATT's mobile share, I'm looking at adding a second line for how cheap it is. I'd like for that second line to be an android device, to get the best of both worlds. As a result of being out of the mix when it comes to android, or more like never having been in it, I have a couple questions.
I distinctly remember how much junk was on my ATT Note 4. Junk apps from Samsung, junk from ATT- and worst of all, I couldn't do anything about it (no root?). Has that changed? Is there a way to remove these apps, fix touch wiz annoyances, etc? I'd think that would require root, but like I mentioned, I don't know the details of note4 root status, or even rooting in general.
I currently have a Nexus 6 and Oneplus One on order (good prices on both of them), but personally like the Note4 the best- can I change it to make it perfect? Or is it still locked down and junked up?

Don't get the AT&T Note 4. Get the T-Mobile Note 4 and use it on the AT&T network. The AT&T version is locked down whereas the T-Mobile version is not which means it's rootable. It looks like the AT&T Note 4 will never see permanent root, ever.

I just bought my note 4 two weeks ago. If I could go back in time I would have bought the nexus 6. This phone lags too much for my liking. It is actually slower than my g2 was at opening apps. I thought I would like this phone but at this point regret my choice.

So just to be clear, I can root a T-Mobile version of the note 4, and use it on att, with no loss of functionality(network speeds/lte bands/that sort of thing)? That sounds like a really attractive option to me. Would T-Mobile let me walk in and buy a device just straight up?

OK heres what you do if they won't let you buy it straight up. Buy the t mobile version on the payment plan because like that there's no contact or ETF. Go home and make a call for 5 min on T mobile sim, then submit the imei to cell unlocker net. Then in a few days call and cancel the service with Tmobile and pay the remainder of the phone off, which by the way is $100 cheaper then the AT&T version. After receiving the unlock code from cell unlocker stick the AT&T sim in and when it boots it will ask for the unlock code, put it in and your good to go.
I have both versions of the note 4 and the t mobile version works perfect on the AT&T network except you have root, custom roms and kernels. All the rom developers in the note 4 t mobile forum full support the AT&T network in there roms straight out the box.
You might want to wait 3 months for the note 5 because this phone is already dated and is a big investment.

The tmobile device is clearly better then- no loss of service quality or anything, but still having the root, roms, etc. I think regardless of the imminent release of the note 5, I might still get the four for now, or just keep that incoming OPO One- waiting 3 months for the note 5, plus however much more time for rooting dev is a bit long for me. I cant believe I didnt come here before I bought 2 brand new at&t Note 4's Unlocked. What an idiot I am. Just never had a at&t and didnt think anything of it because everytime I have wanted to root and mod my previous phones, I never had a problem.. I never had at&t though.. uhhgg. maybe by the time I just cant stand the stock rom, they will unlock the bootloader? I dont know if that's how it works...
Oh well, sad man here.

Oh I feel you man. Note 4 was my first phone on ATT and I regret it. If I wanted to be locked down I would get a iphone. Still the note 4 is a great phone just with a lot of unused potential.

Well, I just sent a return request for one of the note 4's. AND just bought a USED sm910T from ebay.
So, instead of me getting a brand new AT&T UNMODDABLE note 4, I will be getting a used but in great condition T-Mobile note 4.
And if I can get out of the restocking fees from the return, I will come out 50 bucks ahead. Cool.
The other new note 4 went to my daughter for xmas, and she already broke the screen. DOH!!
I lucked out this time I guess.

Some phones still ended up rooting and unlocked (Sky-Rocket, LG E970, and Note II) this is the 1st phone I purchased that couldn't be rooted to install ROMs and Mods. Very annoyed but glad to know after this experience we know not to buy from At&t directly. Either buy unlocked form Swappa, eBay or Amazon or know that you will be limited when you buy from carrier. In the mean time if you really want out, pay the bill so its clear for selling, and sell it online or in person. Also you can wait it out until the next upgrade.

Never again for me, not directly from AT&T & maybe not Samsung. [AT&T-Captivate, and VZ-Note2..rooted and other ROM'd but now ]. Question: what aspect of the hardware allows a carrier's specific bands of LTE to function? Or is it that the hardware is fully "plastic", capable of any LTE banding given the software[albeit locked] and SIM[mine unlocked] ? There are multiple Note4's. AT&Ts also runs UMTS and GSM. T's? Verizon's also runs its EV-DO. Perhaps these 2G, and 3G aspects become irrelevant and the 4G/LTE buildout completes, but the question remains over capability on carrier specific LTE bands.
With my SIM unlocked Note4 I used a VODA SIM this summer in Italy, but don't recall whether I had access to LTE , or evn which data mode functioned.

i bought a note 4 on an online australian shop for $470 (really hard without a job)
Anyway, they noted that their phones are from GENUINE Suppliers and i got a Note 4 UNLOCKED from, you guessed it. AT&T.
Now i wasnt too fussed. I was happy i got a note 4 that wasnt a chinese brick phone, since it technically was refurbished from their Hong Kong Warehouse. Anyways
After like...idk 2 months? approx? i decided i wanna root it. Guess what?! BOOTLOADER. WHAT THE ***T!!
Anyway, i spoke to some people, one said he hasnt rooted a phone passed gen 6. and the other person said 'no cant root. Bootloader is locked and no way to bypass.'
Soo im wondering if its possible to root the phone without removing bootloader? I dont restart my phone much and the whole bootloader doesnt worry me so im just curious if i can chuck a stock rom on without worrying about the bootloader.
Some background info:
I am Australian, therefore my phone is running under Australian networks (Boost, Lyca, Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, etc)

No root or bootloader unlock yet or maybe ever....u can disable all the att stuff but not remove completely without root. At least it will cleanup ure app drawer a lil.

Ripping encrypted DVDs (or DVDs locked to a region) = unlocked
PlayStation 3 = reverse engineered
iPhone = jailbroken
Why isn't the AT&T Note4 unlocked yet? Would offering a bounty help? Is it impossible to unlock? Is it a matter of time? Is it a matter of throwing lots of computation power against the lock?
What will finally get the AT&T Note4 unlocked?

Is there no bounty offered? If each ATT Note4 owner chips in a few dollars, we could raise a bounty of several hundred dollars. Then some tech-wiz can take much time trying to unlock the bootloader.

I know this may be an open ended question but as on now which carrier provides tho best opportunity when it comes to rooting and rom development. I've been rooting and flashing roms for years with other android phones but only on At&t. With the current state of updates from At&t as well and not being able to flash on at&t i'm possibly going to drop att after contract runs out. Current cell is N910A and I miss flashing new roms to try. I seen a vid of a guy flashing Dr. Keatons rom to his Note 4 N910 g/h i think and it looked awesome. Thanks guys
frankly its best to buy an unlocked phone. if you need a carrier branded phone then try t-mobile
Carriers' advantage is with the phone subsidy..
And though the Note series is probably the best coming from Samsung (probably the best Android, too), it is quite expensive to be honest..

The AT&T NEXT plan you are paying for your phone in increments. The old way was to give you $X amount of subsidy and have you pay a discounted price for the phone itself. Then they locked you into a contract where you were basically repaying that subsidy.
Basically you always paid for your phone, so I think that carriers' advantage only applies if you can't afford to purchase the handset outright.
Stay with ATT and buy an international phone that will work on it (ATT may or may not throttle your data speeds though. Not sure)
Or leave ATT and go with T-mobile and get a rootable phone. Or go with Verizon and MAYBE get LUCKY and get a rootable phone.
Those are really the two options if you want a rootable phone. You can keep ATT and still be able to use a rootable phone. Just don't expect root on an ATT phone.

I'm on AT&T, but no contract so, correct me if I'm wrong, there isn't any reason to buy the note from AT&T. How, as an American, do I buy the international version? The only place I see it is on amazon, where they're charging an extra 100$ for.

I'm personally getting the N930V with Verizon and I'll flash the U firmware later like I did with my S7 edge. You could do the same, unless you're more interested in a potential bootloader unlock.
The 930U is the unlocked American version? When does that even come out? I don't care about the bootloader, I just would prefer the exynos version because it's usually a slight bit better, but I'm not dropping 980$ on it.
The U version of the S7 was still a snapdragon. If you want the exynos, you'll need to get the international version. It's not out so that's probably why it's still pricey. If you want to save some cash just wait for it to be cheaper on Swappa or eBay.

How did you flash the U version I thought Verizon has locked bootloaders and you couldn't make modifications ?

It flashes through Odin. Since it's a stock firmware it flashed over just fine.

If you're a Flashaholic like me it is definitely worth getting an unlocked Exynos version with its unlocked bootloader.
But the down side is lack of warranty and some of the frequencies that you're carrier uses may not be available on the International version

As for frequencies - it looks like they are good for most Canadian wireless companies.
Do we know for sure if Exynos N930F will come with an unlocked bootloader? (still waiting to order mine)
And what about warranty? Isn't Samsung supposed to honor warranty no matter where you buy it from on brand new phones just launched for a year since their launch date (it only makes sense and they used to back in Galaxy S2 days - from experience) *sigh*

Nope, from what im seeing they wont honor warranty in the US if you buy an international phone. Thats my major hurdle right now. I would really like to get some type of warranty. Even contacted Squaretrade and they said no. So will try upsie.
it's been a few years since I bought international, last phone was s3, what's the current state of international Samsung phones on att? do we still only get 2 compatible bands? I know theres a thing where you have to use the phone for 5 mins in that country with the country Sim card, anything else I should know about? speed and coverage still good? i been out of the game a bit so I'm playing catch up here.

I am in the same boat as you. Being able to flash my phone and play around with it, is my version of a work day stress reliever. Being an owner of a S7E and my old reliable N4, I cant wait for the N7 to be released. I will be replacing my N4 with it so I need to make sure that the Intl version will be unlocked. Will be following the early reports that will soon start trickling in as units arrive to their new owners.

I bought the N7 from BHP (link you posted earlier) they have it available for pre-order and in the checkout they offered Square Trade for Warrenty - I also used Square Trade when I purchased the S7Edge (international Version) So I don't think it is giong to be a problem for you if you want to use Square Trade or any other major warrenty program like Upsie. Good Luck

This is why I like this community. Thanks for coming back and updating. This was my biggest issue and you have now solved it. knowing I can get a warranty alleviates the what if's for me. I'm paranoid and always insure my devices even though i have never broken one. So I will be ordering from B&H as well. They seem very knowledgeable on unlocked phone issues from the FAQ and they don't charge tax in some states. All Im waiting for now is to see if Root is coming and development support. I'm on T-Mobile by the way so I will not get VoLTE and WiFi-calling but TEKHD said he will work on that in his ROM so I have some hope. Thanks again.

I am on ATT and use the G935F right now on ATT and it works great - I don't knwo for sure if the N930 (note 7) will be unlocked but it seems like it probably will be - I htink the chances are high that the bootloader is unlocked and if that turns out to be true, root is not too far away - just need to get it in the hands of a few devs who do that sort of thing - and all should be good. Fingers Crossed...

Interesting. What advantages does the U firmware have over the stock Verizon firmware, or are you just getting rid of all the Verizon bloat? Do you lose wifi calling and Samsung pay?

You lose all bloatware and Verizon apps. It essentially turns the phone into a stock Samsung expensive.
You will lose any carrier extras like wifi calling VOLTE and Verizon's own vvm service. For some reason they only allow you to install their voicemail apps on their phones. Samsung pay still works though, and to get around the voicemail issue I just use Google voice as a forwarding number if I don't answer. It's honestly better than any carrier voicemail service I've used as there's no extra charges and you get notifications anywhere.
