G3 Hotspot. - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone had any experience with the G3's hotspot rooted or non-rooted? Any experience with signals or stability would be greatly appreciated.
A little sob story background: I live in a neighborhood that the Teleco companies have completely neglected. Even though I live in america I only have dial up. Our phones get the very Edge of sprint's LTE network but I'm running a Galaxy S2 with Wimax (which wonderful sprint discontinued a month after I bought the phone) So our only means of internet is a 3G and what little LTE my family can pick up with their various phones. I'm a gamer so I'd like to be brought into the highspeed age finally. Hotspot reliability will make or break buying the LG G3 and I'd love to get a little feedback of what to expect.
Thanks!

Works just the same as any other device for me, been using it a lot for my chromebook had no dropouts or issues.

Would I be able to use this phone as a hotspot out of the box like I can with my Nexus 5 or would I have to go through my carrier for that? I use my Nexus 5 as a hotspot for my Nexus 7 when I'm out and about. I wouldn't want to have to start paying monthly for that function.

Should work out of the box like any android phone

Are you Verizon unlimited, and that's why you're asking? If you just need something, what about FreedomPop? I know, I know - sleazy company - but they're wedded to Sprint's LTE/WiMax exsting network (if you're close), and you might be able to rig an antenna/amp to pull in that LTE. It's what I do to get V (and formerly AT&T) in my basement.
I'm keeping an eye on this thread, too, as I'm curious. I've got a JB iPhone to get the hotspot and keep my unlimited. I actually use the hotspot about once every 2-3 months, and usually for less than 1/4 of my phone-only data, so it galls me to consider adding ~$500/yr for those couple times I need a sip of data when I'm on the road. I'll be switching to the G3 as soon as its released, and seeing how it's like on the android side of things.

But does every phone work out of the box with tethering? I'm on T-Mobile with an older unlimited data plan, if that helps.
Coming from a Nexus 4 and 5, tethering was always an option in the settings. My concern is whether or not it's still an option in a skinned version of Android or will I need to add tethering to my plan and use a T-Mobile branded app?

Some of T-Mobile's older unlimited plans don't like you using wifi tethering. I'm on an older unlimited and once in a while I get a webpage telling me to upgrade my plan. I'm currently using an HTC Sensation though and thinking of getting the G3.

Does freedom pop have true unlimited? No hidden data charges and all the data I can handle? I've used about 30gb in the last month on my 3G connection and probably another 20GB in the last 4 days on my mother's LTE. This is using Sprint's unlimited data plan. I burn through the GB and 5-10gb a month just wouldn't do.
EDIT: Just checked and no Freedom pop doesn't Calculating the data charges for my current useage would cost me about $2000 a month. No thanks.

This is why I need to know how native tethering works on a G3.

Tethering is the same as any other android phone. The G3 supports wifi, blue tooth and USB tethering. How this works with US versions of the phone I dont know. In the UK tethering is monitored and controlled by the network not the phone, so the phone still has the capability. If you have a plan that allows tethering, and you dont have a crippled version of the phone there's no difference, its just like any other android phone.

Damn, that's serious (mobile) data! No, FP would be just to get you connected, not an all-you-can-eat buffet. (I used it as backup on the road, but their coverage around me sucked)

T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 VS Unlocked Touch Pro 2?

Ok I have question... since rumors have it that the Touch Pro 2 will be coming to the states and to T-mobile, I'm assuming that it will have T-mobiles 3G band? Hopefully? If so, would that mean the unlocked versions of the Touch Pro 2 have the T-Mobiles 3G band as well or no? This is in the same boat as the G1 as I don't really need the data plan on the G1 but maybe occassional use with T-Zones. I was hoping that the Touch Pro 2 would be able to use T-Mobiles 3G and not be forced to have its own data plan.
Now lets say they make you have the data, could you flash the firmware and radio and that do anything? I heard that they can trace the phone via IMEI so if your using that T-Mobile branded phone, even though you have a different firmware and what not they would still be able to trace the phone via IMEI correct?
Ideally it'd be nice to have the Touch Pro 2 on T-mobile using 3G occasionally with T-zones but one can only hope...

I've had eveything from the 8125 to the fuze and now the omnia and never had a data plan. I use wifi at all the place I need to go. Never saw the need to text, either. I needed a pda w/ word, etc., for editing, and tv-out for presentations and a phone as an add-on (no more laptop-- true convergence!) Too cheap for the data plans, when I don't need them. On ATT, BTW, hope they bring on the TP2

What is the 3g band for t-mobile? is it different from the one that AT&T uses?
curious as sometimes some phones say 3g compatible for the US and reading some previews show T-mobile is cooking its own 3g networks or so? Is the 3g band in the us : 850/1900 or 2100??
tahnks for clarifying

Noob question here, never had a smartphone before....So if I buy the AT&T Fuze outright and get it unlocked I can use it for email and accessing free wifi at restaurants? What about the apps that stream free radio stations? I have a laptop too, really just want the Fuze for the convenience of being to check email and the web from time to time when I'm out and about.

Yes, you do. If you have wifi virtually everywhere anyway, why pay an extra $30 per month for carrier data? That's the reason for so many years carriers insisted smartphones not have wifi built-in. They feared it would eat at their data profits.
Also, not everyone is going to have the same use pattern for TP2 that you might. Some people's uses for WinMo will be mostly offline.

I mostly use mine offline also, but that doesn't detract from the fact that you can't even get a picture message without a data plan.
Also, I pay $20 a month for data and have for a while now. The data plan has only gone up $5. Also, I live in the most populace state in the US, and free WiFi is not available most places. So fail right there.

Incorrect. You can still get messages, hell you can even use the internet without a plan, it just costs a lot more because your paying per KB rather than for a pool. At least that's how my plan works.
Are there any unlocked TP2 phones around???
1. As far as T-Mobile is concerned, data plan is not required on any phone except the G1 since it pings Google server all the time.
2. You do need a data plan if you want to get any rebate but you can cancel afterward.
3. There is no PPU data plan with T-Mobile therefore if you don't have a data plan, you could only use WiFi for data.
4. Finally, you don't need a data plan to get MMS. All you need is the correct MMS & WAP settings in your phone.
BTW, at least here in SoCal free WiFi hotspots are not available everywhere.
1700 band
Will it have the 1700 band for HSDPA and 3G? That is the question.

False. My brother in-law has AT&T and he can not get MMS without data plan. You are correct about receiving MMS on T-Mobile though. You can receive, but not send them.

[Q] AT&T Non-smart phone plan...hmm?

I recently acquired an HTC Vision from overseas. Since the change AT&T's website is giving me the option to add an unlimited data plan for non-smartphones for $10 (I don't currently have any data plan because my prior smartphone was grandfathered into an excemption). I know that the reason they are offering the cheap plan is because they don't sell the phone so they can't detect the model I'm using from the IMEI - but...
* does anyone have experience doing this?
* Do they ever catch you and force you to change?
* Is there an unwritten cap to the unlimited non-smartphone data plan that I should be mindful of not exceeding or an amount that you think would raise flags?
* Is there anything I can do to make myself more under the radar - I was thinking maybe changing my device on the AT&T website to a non-smartphone made by another manufacturer so my old smart phone is no longer listed?
Well first off, make sure that the Desire Z you have has the proper frequencies for AT&T.
As far as running the unlimited featurephone data plan, I'm not sure. They might be able to not tell what type of phone you're using, but they will be able to tell that it isn't one of their list of featurephones the plans work for. I think this is the biggest hurdle, they will more than likely find out that you're using a phone that isn't an AT&T featurephone and kick you off of it.
As far as data usage goes, I'm assuming it will throw up a flag when your first month you use 4gb-5gb of data on your "featurephone" that isn't even supposed to have a full browser lol.
If this was that easy to do, don't you think there would be more people getting a free featurephone with a $10 unlimited data plan and buying their phones unsubsidized? lol. Dunno just never heard of anyone doing this before.
I don't get 3G but the phone works fine on the EDGE network. Since it isn't a phone from the US I'm thinking that it might be able to escape detection a lot easier than say, a phone from T-Mobile.

If it doesn't work on 3G then it has the same bands as a T-mobile G2 (or similar, either way it doesn't work on 850/1900 3G that AT&T uses) and you'd end up with the same result. If you're not even gonna use 3G, then why are you paying for a data plan at all?
The real question is, is there a specific reason why you're using AT&T? If you're just going to be using the phone on EDGE with AT&T, you might as well just pay for a data plan on T-mobile and get 3G/4G... maybe just my personal opinion but I have no idea why someone would choose to pay for a smartphone and use it on the EDGE network. I wanna gouge my eyes out when I'm on EDGE lol.

Right now I'm not paying for a data plan. However, if I did pay for one, I'd only be using it to do things like check my e-mail, use voice dial, or play ad-supported games - nothing that would be crippled by the slower data transfer. Basically stuff that is worth $10/month to me but not $30.

I see... But what I'm saying is why would you pay for an AT&T plan, are you somehow obligated to stay there? If you're bringing your own phone to T-mobile, their no contract plans are as low as $59.99/mo. Maybe AT&T has good service in your area, I'm not sure. But if you have no reason to stay on AT&T and service is comparable on T-mobile, I doubt you'll be paying more for 3G service on T-mo than you would for only 2G on AT&T.
T-mobile no contract (youre bringing your own phone) = $59.99 for 500min, unlim texts, and "unlimited" data.
AT&T phone plans = $39.99 450minutes, + $20 unlim texts + $10 for "featurephone data" = $69.99 and that doesn't get you 3G.
Not trying to convert, just trying to make sense of your situation.

Well that would explain a lot. As far as your original plan goes, I'm not sure how it works. They have to identify between their featurephones and smartphones somehow, and that means they may easily be able to identify that you're using a smartphone. Not sure.
From my understanding when i was about to try this smartphones have there own data set....and regular unlimited browsing is something else. But i can be wrong. Get back to me about this, very interested to see if this works.

This does work.
I am using an unbranded/unlocked Desire Z on ATT with the $10/month basic data plan. Years ago, I purchased a 'dumb phone' from them and have had this data plan on my account since then.
I have used this data plan with a Touch Pro, Blackberry Bold and Nokia E71, all without any problems. All of them were ATT branded and they could see the device I was using. Only thing that didn't work was the Blackberry branded data apps.
With a phone that is not from ATT they cannot tell what device you are using. I've had the DZ since November and haven't heard anything from there. My data usage each month has ranged from 400-700 MB. Not sure what the cap is, but I don't tether or anything and use wifi when I'm at home as well.
This of course is not in line with their 'smartphone policy' so don't walk into a store and expect them to do this for you. You'll have to do it online... Not sure how closely they watch new additions on the basic plans but I would give it a shot and see if they let you keep going... My guess is that unless you're sucking up data at 2-3GB a month, it won't be a problem...
Let me know how it goes for you!
I have an Australian HTC Desire as my personal line, and I pay the $10 data. AT&T employee line plans suck pretty bad...

You are good to go.
I used a G2 on AT&T for a few months before switching to T-Mobile. I do not remember how much data I used but I know that AT&T had no clue what I was doing/using. I was on the $15 unlimited messaging data plan though, not sure about the $10 one. As long as the phone is not branded or specifically made for AT&T bands (like the AT&T N1) they have no clue what you have, that is the main reason I only use GSM networks.
Protip: You can suspend your line if you are on a family plan and switch to T-mobile which is what I am currently doing until my wife's iPhone contract runs out. They will still charge you $10/month though. $25 for 2GB is WAY overpriced.
For those of you who were interested in hearing if this worked: I've been on the data plan for about two weeks and have used about 200mb thus far. So far, so good. The EDGE network speeds can be a little slow but it is better than nothing.
I'm curious if I'll be detected now that AT&T has acquired T-Mobile, since the G2 is in T-Mobile's lineup, which is based on the HTC Vision just like the Desire Z that I am using.
my question is...
Why cant you use 3g if you have a DZ from overseas? the G2 is the phone with the weird 3g bands. the overseas phone should work like a charm on att.

Lots of people do this. I have a Nokia E71 currently on this plan (and a Desire Z on the way). My only concern is with AT&T's new crackdown on tethering.
Can someone tell me if ATT can make the difference between the type of data transfer someone uses (like web browsing vs Market android download or google syncing)?
Yes they can catch you. Yes they can tell the differance between mms and web browsing....yes they can see every site and bit of information, every call made, every text sent, every minute of every day..... the questions is do they care? The simple answer is no. I have used my own phones on att for 8+ years. I not even sure if its agaisnt any policy they have anyway? Anyway if they ever did "catch" you the worst they would do is say stop that, pay more, or cancel your account. Then maybe you will be free to join tmo lol.

Galaxy Nexus WiFi hotspot working on AT&T w/o tethering plan!

I'm coming from an iPhone 4S and so far I really like the Galaxy Nexus (although it definitely does have its shortcomings compared to the iPhone). I was just playing around in the settings and found Wifi hotspot options. With the iPhone these options never worked unless you paid AT&T extra for a tethering plan (which is not even available when grandfathered into an unlimited plan). I tried turning them on and configuring a PW and lo and behold it worked! I didn't see this mentioned yet and thought others would like to know as well.
Are you rooted and using a custom rom, or still stock?
I'm still stock...just got the device last night. Also still on 4.0.1 and device shows as no updates available.

Lol. Will you still be this excited if and when atnt switches you to a tethering plan?

I almost never use tethering but the few times I'm traveling it will be very beneficial. I highly doubt AT&T would switch me to a tethering plan if I use less than 1 GB of tethering per yr!

You bought an unlocked phone not associated with AT&T. As a result, the tethering features built into android are not blocked. This is one of my favorite feature of my Nexus One.
I tether all the time and us ~1.5GB of data a month. Although, I have gone as high as 3GB... (I have unlimited data)
Enjoy!

Good to know! Thanks!
Although I do own the unlocked version of the iPhone 4S and even that phone has the tethering options blocked.

Precisely...rooting or custom roms have nothing to do with this. Att effectively has no control over how you use your phone or data in this case.

I'm coming from an iPhone 4S and so far I really like the Galaxy Nexus (although it definitely does have its shortcomings compared to the iPhone). Uhh we knew this. Unlocked phone man. It just works. This is how phones are meant to be.
The iPhone is provisioned by AT&T and its IMEI's are known in AT&T's database. So they're able to block and charge for ridiculous services like tethering.
I have tried this out and it works. Is there anyway for AT&T to tell if we are tethering though? Should I be on a tethering apn?

I've used tethering on my N1 for the past two years. Generally, I use around 1.5gb/month... No problem so far *knock on wood*.
was working - not now
yip have been using wifi hotspot for some time now
on my old SG1 and then on my Nexus
I has however stopped working recently, and cant see why
the app appears to be working but the wifi network is never discoverable
if anyone has a fix could you let me know
thanks in advance
m
Lol they know when your using it tho... with my Nexus one I was sent a text message saying my plan will change if I continue with tethering... I got out of unlimited last month and its the best thing I could have done... unlimited Mobile to Mobile (Verizon Sprint and T-Mobile) but 700 minutes for land lines. . Unlimited text and 5GB a Month... I hate being throttled so the switch was made. I'm paying less then when I was unlimited =]

no, but try foxfi, that's what I used before I moved to 30gb data plan
Tethering:
Most AT&T plans allow for mobile data sharing anymore. Even if your grandfathered in to the old "unlimited" plans. I've attached screen shots to the built in tethering functionality of the Note 4. Let me know if this works for you or if it's not what you're looking for.

Just because you see it there in the settings doesn't mean it will work for the old unlimited plan. The phone usually calls 'home' and checks to see what plan you're on before tethering is enabled.

Right. I understand that. It worked for me when I was under the old "unlimited" plan. That's why I said that. Is it not working for you?
So wifi tethering works and you don't get some message stating that you need contact AT&T to enable this feature? I have the grandfathered unlimited data plan and I usually tether with my i717. I don't want any issues with this feature if and when I get this phone.
I am no longer on the unlimited plan but yes, it worked stock when I was on the unlimited plan using android.
I'm grandfathered in the unlimited and it does not work. It tells me to call att. That is weird that it worked for you when you had the unlimited plan.

I'm still waiting for my note 4 pre-order from Best Buy lol. If tethering works on the old unlimited plan that is awesome.
I'm on the old unlimited plan and it doesn't work for me.
Well I tried foxfi/pdanet and easytether and they both work with bt tether... For some reason WiFi still tells you to call att...

I just changed over within the last 3 months or so to another plan but I have been using tethering out of the box on stock for a while now. Not sure why they're not letting you. As far as the old "unlimited" plan goes, I found that after 5gigs, they throttled my speeds down to less than 1mbps downstream. I changed to 10gigs per month and have had no issues, throttling or tethering.
I am still on the unlimited plan and have never been able to natively tether without root/custom rom or using something like foxfi. It results in the message you got if tried. Last time I checked with att they tried to charge me 20$ extra a month for tethering, or switching to another data plan.

any confirmed wifi tethering solutions yet for those of us whose plans do not allow it?
Yeah I should have mentioned in the op that I have unlimited data. On my current Android with root the tethering works fine. Was honestly considering a iPhone 6+ if there are no solutions out there for this. With jailbreak on that device I know the tethering works fine on unlimited data.
Reality is a shame that there is no root solution out
If you had an unlimited data plan, you certainly shouldn't be able to turn on tethering as it was never part of that data package. It was a separate add-on (I think for another $20) in order to enable tethering, and even then, it would only give you like 5GB or some small amount like that.
Had to root to get around the call home in order to do that.
That being said I haven't heard people try too much on the Note 4 since most people do have the newer plans that include tethering. I remember hearing that FoxFi still worked, but not sure on the Note 4.
hi guys
I have a AT&T version unlocked and use it on Tmobile network... how can I enable the this feature ?? I tried but it keep saying no network connection or invalid sim ??
Hey Everyone,
Just had a friend get Note 4 from ebay and it appears to be AT&T.
Anyway with the Australian SIM in when tries to Wifi Tether it give an error.
Is their anyway to fix this what about Custom ROM ?

Does Verizon know HotSpot usage if I have unlocked Pixel 3 XL?

I bought the regular, non-Verizon unlocked Pixel 3 XL from Google directly. I'm considering changing my data plan with Verizon, and my main consideration is HotSpot usage.
I imagine the Verizon Pixel 3 XL tells Verizon when I'm using HotSpot, but can the regular, non-Verizon branded Pixel tell Verizon when I'm using HotSpot? I'm also using AdGuard with VPN, so that might obfuscate it to Verizon even more.
Yes they can. VPN only hides what ur doing not how ur connected.
How can they tell? Does Android "tag" the data in some way when it's using HotSpot?

Ok....
It is not detectable,*but using tethering on Android with an second device leaves a lot of traces:
User-Agent Headers within HTTP that come from non-mobile browser
Increased Traffic consumption
Connection to services that are not available on Android/Smartphone devices (e.g. World of Warcraft)
and many more I can't think of atm.
Even when you use VPN each device that sends or request data will broadcast ur Mac address IMEI etc. Their are ways around it but it's so much easier to just go legit. Verizon has unlimited anyway so y do u need to hide it?

Because Verizon doesn't really do "unlimited" plans anymore; they have a plan that gives you 4G speeds on hotspot until 15GB, and other plans that throttle hotspot capped at 600 Kbps. Or no hotspot at all.
They also keep changing this every few years, which is pretty annoying as it gets really confusing.

Damn I'm really sorry to hear that. However that is the case now anywhere no one offers truly unlimited anymore and everyone's hotspot is now capped at a certain limit but I didn't think you would be getting 600 kg per second I figured it would be at least 3 g but then again I see some people get kept at 2G so thank your stars on that part that you're not getting kept the 256 kilobytes per second
I have unlimited at Verizon, and Hotspot as well. Been on this plan for over a year.
