Can't delete a rom (CM11) to install new one - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

****edit: It appears that the option "format /system" which is tucked away in a sub menu did the trick and erased the rom.
I am trying to completely delete a rom I have installed which is CyanogenMod 11 but it seems to stay no matter what, or I'm not doing it right.
First I go into recovery with the power+vol down and choosing recovery.
I have ClockworkMod 5.8.1.5.
From there I choose the wipe data/factory reset and also the wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik cache.
Then I choose the install zip from sd card to install Blackout_ICS_Incredible_v4.0.zip
After following the installer instructions and rebooting it goes back to CM11...
Any ideas how to wipe CM11 from my device?
Thanks :good:

Try formatting with fastboot.
Boot your device into fastboot and type these commands
Code:
fastboot devices
Just to be sure ur devic is connected
Code:
fastboot format system
Code:
fastboot format data
Code:
fastboot format boot
If the above doesnt work, susbtitute
Code:
format
with
Code:
erase

4EXT Recovery 1.0.0.6 R2
try changing the recovery via bootloader, download latest 4ext recovery zip then rename it to PD98IMG and place it to your root directory of your sdcard. Then go into bootloader it will automatically detect zip file and will ask you for update, press volume up to start the update, reboot and your done. After flashing new recovery go into recovery and then wipe/format from there format all partitions except sd card. When done go back to main menu and select info to see the free space/size of all partitions.
Device: HTC Desire HD
ROM: CM11 M8.1
Recovery: 4EXT 1.0.0.6 R3 build 8
If it helped you then pressing then press the thanks button.

You do not flash an update.zip to update clockworkmod. You just launch rom manager then click the top button to flash the latest version. Also, you can scroll down to the bottom and there is an option to flash an alternate recovery to flash ra
yes i did that and when my phone reboot i hit recovery and then i press volume up and power like allways and then i see this screen
android system recovery <2e>
use volume key to highlight :
click power key to select
reboot system now
apply sdcard: update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
the only option i have is apply update.zip so please help thanx what i have to do to get a new recovery without this option (apply update.zip) or a newer update.zip file ?????

So you have your zip file that you want to flash on the root of your sd card?
What recovery are you running right now?
what error is it giving you now?

is your NAND unlocked? I am running the eng-boot loader and my version is 0.76.2000
I am not 100% sure because I don't use clockwork, but I think the newer ones actually flash the recovery partition, whereas the older ones put an update.zip onto the sd card. So if you are sure that your NAND is unlocked, you should delete that update.zip on your sd card. If your NAND is not unlocked then you need to go do that

recovery loop problem

I now cannot get into an operating system. The device loads FFF 1.4a says "booting" goes blank for a little while then comes back to the 1.4a screen and says "booting" again and loads up TWRP. This is how I got to this point:
I recently decided to go from an older CM7 rom to a new jb one.
Because I had an older version of FFF and had a CWM recovery, I downloaded the new version of FFF (1.4a) and the newest version of TWRP (2.2.0) (flashable zip file) as well as the new jellybean rom and jb gapps. I checked all md5s prior to doing anything.
I booted into recovery and created a backup in CWM. I then cleared cache and Davlic cache and installed FFF 1.4a. I then rebooted to CM7. After loading CM7, I rebooted into recovery, cleared cache and davlic cache and installed TWRP 2.2.0. I then rebooted into CM7, rebooted into recovery. I then cleared cache, davlic cache, factory reset, and wiped system. I then installed CM10 and jb gapps and attempted to reboot to system, but have not ever been able to get there.
I have tried installing the CM7 rom I had before, no difference, CM9 rom, no difference. I tried to use a recovery file I had, still no good.
Adb does not seem to behaving properly as well. I can't seem to be able to get the device into fastboot mode for one. In TWRP I can see the device as the following:
4B8E000600000001 recovery
when I try to change the bootmode, this is how it behaves:
adb shell
~ # <-[6n idme bootmode 4002
/sbin/sh: idme: not found
KFU also seems to not be much help at changing the bootmode. I have tried older version as sited elsewhere (0.9, 0.3), but these fair no better.
Also, In my haste and desire to get this working I thought,"maybe there is some conflict with the sd card", so I wiped that only to realize while wiping that I never backed up my recovery files, "doh!".
Also, I have full battery.
I am a noob, so I could have done anything wrong. Any help would be appreciated.
When you get to the bootloader screen select boot normal in the boot menu by quickly depressing your power button a few times if it does not boot normal then flash the bootloader again in recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1632375 also you will have to mount your sdcard in twrp to do so make sure there are no checks in the boxes of system and data then mount transfer 1.4a bootloader a new ROM and gapps then unmount flash bootloader reboot it get back to twrp wipe factory reset wipe cache wipe dalvik wipe system flash ROM flash gapps select reboot if prompted select system see where your at after that

Instructions for updating to CleanROM 2.0 R2

Question,
If one used these instructions originally to install Clean Rom version 1.5 on their Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014)
-boot to download mode and Flash autorootp600mj4.tar.md5 via ODIN AP slot keep default settings.
-Let it reboot to ROM by itself
-Back up apps with TB (you should have root now)
-Copy Clean ROM 1.5 zip file (or newer) to your EXT SD CARD (internal will be erased when doing factory reset next steps)
- reboot to download mode and Flash stockrecoverymj4.tar.md5 via ODIN AP slot keep default settings.
-Just when rebooting hold power+vol UP to go to stock recovery you just flashed (no need to let it boot to ROM, if you miss its ok just reboot from ROM and do the button combination when booting up i.e. before spashscreen shows up)
-Factory reset and reboot
-Just when rebooting hold power+vol DOWN to go to download mode (If you miss the button combination reboot from ROM to recovery and factory reset and then repeat this step)
-Flash TWRP (openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.3-lt03wifiue.zip) from ODIN AP slot
-Just when rebooting hold power+vol UP to go to TWRP you just flashed (If you miss this step you have to flash stock recovery again to do the factory reset, AFAIK doing factory reset from TWRP has issues so I didnt do it, only use stock recovery for that)
-go to settings and check rm -rf
-mount ExtSDcard
-install Clean ROM (DO NOT wipe again)

To update to 2.0 R2, would this now be the procedure to ensure a proper flash to new version?
-First backup whatever apps/data you need.
-Copy Clean ROM 2.0 R2 zip to your EXT SD CARD (internal will be erased when doing factory reset next steps)
-Reboot - hold power+vol UP - IN TWRP which is already installed = Choose advance tab under wipe, then choose wiping system, cache & Dalvik cache. (Don't choose data because boot loops can occur?)
-go to settings and check rm -rf (is this step necessary?)
-mount ExtSDcard
-install Clean ROM (DO NOT wipe again)
Thanks

I followed the above to upgrade, but all my apps (and settings like wifi password) that I had installed were still present after the install of Clean Rom 2.0 R2. Is that because I did NOT choose to wipe the DATA in the wipe process from TWRP? Is there any caveats to updating like this?
Thanks

erase phone

hi all
been searching and searching but doesnt find quite what i am want. so ill ask here.
how can i completely delete my phone? and start it all over. after trying different roms i have more "roots" on my sdcard. so i want to erase sdcard, system, everything and start all over. how to do that??
i know i then wont have any rom.zip file on sdcard to install then, but seems like that can be done with sideloader in recovery right??
regards.

dear,
i am using this method:
flash any rom, and make it root ZV9-ZVB-Universal-Root or towelroot
install freegee, grant root access, unlock bootloader, and install custom recovery
reboot into recovery by turning off, then vol up + power
in recovery, unmount everything, wipe data, system, and all cache, recovery will say there is no os to boot into (twrp has a full wipe option)
start adb sideload, connect usb, wait for drivers, and "adb sideload rom.zip" OR:
turn off, put in download mode: vol up and down, and THEN connect usb. wait for drivers, and use kdz updater in 3gqct - emergency for kdz files <1GB

One option would be to flash a KDZ -- that will get you to a complete fresh stock setup, and everything will be wiped from your phone. Of course, you need to root, unlock BL, and flash custom recovery before doing anything else...
Or, you can simply use your existing custom recovery to format the entire /data partition, as well as the /system. Specific options may differ between recovery versions, so I will just give you an example based on PhilZ Touch CWM that I am using. Normally, when you do "format /data", or wipe "clean to install a new ROM", it always preserves /data/media, which is your internal SD. To wipe it clean, you need to chose another option -- either "wipe user media" from the Wipe menu, or "format /data and /data/media" from Mounts and Storage menu. Other recoveries may have different options for doing this.
As for installing a ROM after wiping the internal SD, yes, you can use adb sideload from recovery.

Takes too much time in every reboots

I got one problem on every rom
Whenever i reboot my phone it takes too much time in booting up
I think every time i reboot cache wiped automatically
Any solution for this sorry for my bad english
best thing to do is just start again - the following steps will erase all user data on internal storage - backup photos documents or anything else you need first
put your phone into fastboot and connect to pc via usb
open a terminal/cmd window where you have your fastboot files
type
Code:
fastboot erase userdata
now go into twrp recovery
goto wipe
advanced wipe
format the following paritions
system
data
cache
art/delvik cache
goto home screen of twrp
mounts
mount the partitions you just wiped
goto home screen of twrp
install
select rom zip
dont restart
goto home screen of twrp
select nano gapps downloaded from http://opengapps.org/
you need arm 7.1 nano
optional
if using lineageos or rom based on it
goto home screen of twrp
install
select suaddon zip (see lineageos instructions for link or get from lineageos website)
Final step
after flashing of the last zip
wipe delvik/art cache from the option after flashing zip
restart
if you have flashed any other zips or modded in any other way it may have an impact on startup
first boot can take up to 10mins
normal boots after take up to around 2mins from power on
