I'm waiting on my powered OTG to turn up and test (another member in a different forum had suggested they had an external working with the cable). Otherwise i might look at getting something different as i am going away for a while and want to use an external to store my movies.

I also have an powered OTG cable, but did not help.
I think that the cause is lack of voltage. With a pen or sd card with adapter, works without problems. Even my camera gives to connect. Always with the OTG cable, of course!

That's a shame. Might need to pick myself up a cheap laptop (maybe one of these lenovo flexs') or a wireless hard drive, now in theory the wireless hard drives are powered so, if it is a voltage problem it might work without activating the wireless function.
Just weird that it would work fine on my nexus 5 but not on the tablet. No solid hdd light when plugged into the gpad.

What file system are you using on the HDD?

In my case, the formats are FAT32, I know that android does not support NTFS.

as long as it is formatted to FAT32 (using stock ROM). Also using the powered OTG cable.
Toshiba 1TB e store USB 3 2.5" drive shown above.

Ah cool, i'll hold on a few more days for this powered one to turn up.

I think it would work if you used USB 2.0 A Male plug to 2 dual USB A Female jack Y splitter Hub adapter Cable, the W male in charger, the two one on the hdd and the other in the Pad, i will try it very soon as soon as i get back to my house...
i also going to use usb extension cable coz the charger is way too long...

Have you tried it with a powered USB hub? Seems like that would address the power issue.

Hi,
Got my cable today (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00B5T4A60/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
Works a treat. The cable doesn't charge the tablet unfortunately whilst its reading from the drive, but at least i can see my hdd now.
I also tested it using an anker Astro3 and it works fine.

Good result, enjoy your movies .

Gents.
Use this program and you are able to go for 1TB disks and NTFS support on the fly.
Could play MKV movies >4Gig and scroll pictures.
Everything works fine for me.

USB Adapter Review

I went to Best Buy and happened to pick up the very last USB adapter. I got it with a ShopKick $5 discount so it came out to about $16 with tax. My first impression was that the box was much smaller than I expected. It was about the size of my Droid.

I preceded to open it up and noticed how much smaller it was than I expected.
The first thing I plugged in was my usb wireless mouse.
My Tab recognized it right away and gave me a nice message saying it worked and now I had a cursor on the screen. Everything worked on the mouse except for the right mouse button, but I kind of expected that.
The next thing I tried was my Droid. It gave me an error saying that it was too high powered to work, which is a bummer, but I can still transfer between the two with bluetooth even if it takes a little while to set up.
Finally I tried a usb drive with a track by Deadmau5 because I knew that that song was not in my library or my Google Music library. Sure enough it showed up in my Music app, but I couldn't find it in Astro File Manager. There was a folder for "usbdrive", but when I opened it, it was empty.
Overall Opinion
I was expecting the adapter to be about twice the size, but was quite happy to find that it was smaller. It seems to work with many devices, but it is maddening when you get the "too high powered device" error. It was also a very tight fit to fit a USB device into the end and you had to use quite a bit of force to plug stuff in. I feel like the overall plug itself fits very loose though in the Tab and that bothers me. It's just too bad Samsung couldn't have fit it inside the tab
7/10
Pros:
Small
Allows many usb devices
Adds more functionality
Cons:
It fits into the Tab loosely
Expensive at $19.99 for what it is
Doesn't work with high powered devices
Thanks for the review... was planning on buying it, but maybe I'll hold off for a bit.

I would recommend it, it's just kind of expensive for what it is.
We need a version of this that allows a USB power. I know it's another thing to plug in but it would save from needing to carry/plug in a powered USB hub just to use an external HD.
I got mine for 10 dollars after a 10 dollar RZ coupon from Best Buy. Everything I've plugged into it works so far (Mouse, Keyboard, Logitech USB Controller, different thumb drives). I have no complaints.
Of interest is that the Engrish directions state that you need to plug whatever USB device into the adapter first, and then plug the adapter into the Tab, or else risk damaging the Tab. Not too sure why.

I don't have a Logitech wireless keyboard, but I've used my Anywhere MX mouse's micro receiver with it successfully. It's one of the "unifying" ones that's supposed to work with their current gen keyboards.
question?
can you connect to it a 2 into one usb adapter? That way you can charge the tablet and have any type of usb device connected?
Will that work?

Sorry it took me so long to respond. As it looks right now, I'd say yes. When I inserted an NTFS formatted flash drive in said "usb storage black or unsupported filesystem" on pershoots kernel with no cifs.

Micro to USB Adaptor is Awesome!

So the day I bought My SGS2 I seen a Video on YouTube about this guy using a Micro USB to Female USB adapter, and all the cool things it could do.
I looked on eBay and from good old China (where everything is made! Probably the sun and God where made there too...) it was only $4.
So I though well I might never use it, but for $4 I'll buy it for the hell of it.

Going to try some Ultima Underworld but need to charge my battery!
I think I'm going to make some videos of playing some old dos games on YouTube. I'll post a link here when I do.

I got my USB-OTG cable today, and was quite disappointed. It was annoying to see that NTFS wasn't compatible. Also every external bus powered HD I tried complained about it being a high powered USB device, as did my iPod.
I also tried a USB Optical Mouse, and a cursor popped up on the screen, but it wasn't moving I will try a cheaper one at work tomorrow. USB Pen drives/Flash disks seem to work, as long as it is only Fat32.
- Edit -
Tried a different (Dell) optical mouse at work today and it seems to work fine, also tried my 16gb USB flash disk and that worked great and quite fast, tried some films and documents through it and it was flawless.
A couple of people have mentioned that a 'bigger cable' or 'powered cable' is needed to get bigger USB drives working. What exactly does that mean??
Yet i tried mine las night, its fast respond for flash disk reading but need a bigger cable to read external hdd. But i think it necessary for those who often worked woth flash disk

[Q] Help with an IOGear SD card reader and the Fire

I am sure this has been answered before but for the life of me I have been searching for a couple of days and I cannot find the answer. Long story short, I have a rooted Kindle Fire that is running the newer kernel that supports USB OTG. I have confirmed that it is working via the app USB Host Controller and I have been able to plug in a USB mouse and use it. However, I am trying to use an IOGear stick SD/Micro SD card reader to quickly view photos taken with my cameras in the field. For whatever reason, USB Host Controller sees the IOGear but as a USB device but the SD cards never show up as mass storage. I have also tried Stickmount but it never sees anything to mount.
What am I missing? Thanks in advance.
Link to the card reader:

I think Targus sd/msd reader is better. They use less volts. Or you could use a powered Usb hub.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire using Tapatalk HD
You're missing an external power source. Your SD card won't mount without one, either a wired hub plugged into an outlet, or a Y cable with battery charger: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFEMh...ature=youtu.be
Good luck, USB OTG helper seems like the best app for mounting external storage at the moment.

Thanks for both of the replies. I did not realize that the reader needed power. Are you saying that the Targus would work without a power source? Ideally I want to keep this as simple as possible. As I mentioned, it is for checking photos while out in the field hiking and such.
Also, doing a quick search I see a lot of Targus products. Is there a specific one?

So you've mounted an SD card on the fire with no external power? interesting, given the voltage requirement of the card itself I'm happily surprised.
A word of caution. File operations with insufficient power is a known way to damage an SD card, with possible irretrievable data loss. Just a reminder to back up your data so you don't entrust your priceless pics or whatever to a hardware hack on a device with hacked firmware,

http://the-gadgeteer.com/2012/12/17/detech-solar-powered-battery-4-port-usb-hub-and-charger/
Fun fact: SD Cards run at 3.3 volts, just like what the Kindle puts out the USB.
That isn't the problem though, the issue is that some USB devices conform to the USB standards more than others, like voltages.
Some devices will run just fine at 3.3 volts, like all 3 of my USB flash drives are fine, my keyboard, my mouse, and at least one of my bluetooth adapters... But my camera doesn't like it, my XBOX controller doesn't, none of my phones do, etc.
A powered USB hub fixes all that though, since it doesn't rely on host power at all.

Got this one from Amazon and have had no issues with it. I've used it with a 128gb usb 3.0 Flash drive formated exfat as well as my 4tb WD my book formated ntfs. I wish the transfer speeds were 3.0 though I don't see any speed difference between this and my old OTG on my S7E. Also you cannot toggle on the use 3.1 speeds for file transfers under phone settings with OTG connection only with PC.

Hi all, I'm looking for an OTG adapter for my htc 10, until now i'm using the adapter in attachements photos with my htc one S and with my Z3 Tablet compact, so I bought a standard microUSB to type C adapter by Aukey, but unfortunately it's not compatible with OTG function. I would like to continue using my current OTG, because it's very compact and I can keep it permanently in my micro drive stick, have you any suggestion regarding a microUSB to type C adapter that support OTG?

Yes, it does. You have to go to the Storage Menu and Enable OTG though.
OTG should work in principle, however propably only with a cable from Oneplus. It does not work with a OTG cable from Anker (just tested it).
Hmm, so this is strange. I have a Sandisk OTG enabled USB drive that I just connected to the OP2 using the OnePlus Micro-USB to Type C adapter. Worked perfectly to backup all my stuff from the old phone. I unplugged here and connected it as is to the OnePlus 3 and it doesn't work. Reconnecting to the OP2 works fine, all of the data shows up on PC also, but just won't show up on the OP3. Very strange, still trying to figure this out.

The OnePlus 2 type-C to micro-USB adapter is a non-standard thing. It was required for the OP2 because the OP2 type C USB is broken.
Try a generic adapter. That's the real test. Generic adapters didn't work on the OP2.
Hmm, so on the OnePlus forums, this seems to be the consensus ... The OnePlus Adapter was for the non-standard Type C on the OP2 and will only allow charging on the OP3, but not OTG. So far, third party standards compatible adapters seem to be working fine. I just ordered the Xiaomi Type C adapter and should get it in a week. Will post here again if it works.

I bought this and it works perfectly: http://www.ebay.com/itm/351729709215?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
I can confirm the Xiaomi Type C Micro USB adapter does NOT work for OTG. Yes, I had OTG enabled, no go!
I'm not seeing an option to enable usb otg in settings/storage. I'm on Oxygen 3.1.3. Am I just missing it? Do I need to unlock developer options first?

Is there any cable which would allow you to charge and read an external flash drive? Never tried OTG before, so I don't know if this is even possible.
