Poor call quality / distortion / noise , anyone else? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

LG-D855 here on UK Orange (EE) network. I get quite bad noise on voice calls. I think I am clear to the other party but I can hear a bad static sound whenever they talk, it is quite irritating.
Call quality is clear on bluetooth, and and when on loud speaker, it only happens when using the normal internal speaker.
Has anyone else experienced this? Since it is not present across all speaker modes I think it is not a network issue and more likely hardware - I am wondering if I have a faulty handset?

Thanks that is useful. I wondered if it was an EE issue as I had problems with their hd voice codec on a different android handset. But I have just done a lot of testing and it definitely is only when on the normal internal speaker, which really makes me think it is a hardware fault.
Will phone CPW and get it swapped.

Uh, how to unroot?

I'm on 3 and the call quality is excellent, I can now use the phone in places where I couldn't with my s3

Don't worry about it there not going to know about if it's rooted just uninstall supersu or superuser which ever you have

Mine has had good call quality on the hd voice codec, but it drops to a lower codec really quickly during a call, not sure why. and that seams to have a little static. Cant remember if this was what calls were normally like on my old phone though.

Hmmmm. I tested again today and the noise is all gone: calls are crystal clear. I really don't understand what is going on, or whether it is software or hardware related.
I suppose it is best to swap it out before I have had it for too long, just in case?

Useful, thanks.

I have the same issue but only on GSM calls. Weirdly whe. I use Skype the calls are crystal clear which therefore eliminates hardware issue unless it's the GSM attend interfering with the earpiece.
Any ideas what I should do?

I don't think you can. The operator will alter it according to signal conditions AFAIK.
Just to complete this thread: I have swapped the phone at CPW under their 28 day guarantee and so far the new handset doesn't exhibit this problem. Will update in a few days time.

You dont. Its automatically selected by the network/phone. Mine seams to start off with clear sound then quickly drops to a lower quality and never recovers for that call.

I had the same issue in Slovenia, I changed phone for new one, but the problem is still here. I find out that I hear that noise only when phone is on 2G/GSM.When I switch to 3G/WCDMA only the sound is perfect, also when I use Skype. Did you try to switch on 3G/WCDMA only?

Yeh I tried switching but same issue. I exchange thr phone, no problem with the new one

Hi all, I have a similar problem but the other way around, people that I call hear a lot of static, but ONLY if I am powering the phone. If I connect the phone to a USB port of my PC there is static too, but less. BTW I call using a wired headset.
Other problem, the LG stock headset muffles my voice and people can't hear me well, I had to use a Samsung headset.
Last problem, when I make calls without headset I hear in the phone the sound that you get when placing a phone next to a speaker...
Does anybody have similar problems?
Needless to say I am very disappointed.
BTW, no audio hissing when playing music via Spotify

I have the exact same problem. Have you found a way to solve this? The problem only occurs when I use a wired headset and plug in my charger. No charger plugged in, no noise as per the person on the other end of the call.

kentii, I bought a wireless charger to charge my phone, in which case the problem doesn't appear. I also bought a bluetooth dongle for my desktop to replace the USB connection. I spend a lot of time on the phone and like using a wired headset. I use MyPhoneExplorer to dial from my PC

Call Sound Quality

Hello,
the sound quality is very bad. The strange thing is, the problem occurs only using the phone app. I am using the stock phone app.
Any idea? I need help. All other things are working but I can't use the phone to make calls. It sounds like distortion ... . Already the sound during ringing has the problem.
The problem only occurs with the internal front speaker. No problem if I use the rear loudspeaker or headphones.
Is there a wait to solve the problem?
Call Sample
Hello,
here is an call sample. I know the quality is not perfekt beacause of the notebook fan. I call another phone and after ringing the mailbox of the called person starts. Especially at the end were the mailbox voice occurs the problem is very clear. It is nearly impossible to understand what is said.
Is this the normal sound of the internal speaker (front)?

Hello,
thanks for the answer. Found the following thread.

Strange thing I am also using this phone in Europe. I am quite sure the problem is not a hardware problem. Because if I use the phone with VoIP service app, the speaker just works ok.
I would try a clean flash of a custom rom, factory reset maybe (was it always bad?..)? I also had problems with the internal speaker, if I have set the volume higher than half, it made crackle sounds. But it was a hardware issue, (in skype, fring, viber also had this problem). I had to send it back to the usa, cause I live in europe and literally no one could fix it here because of the lack of hardware. I had to live without my phone for a month.. annoying thing, but now it's ok

First of the time after buying I didn't use the phone for calling. With Skype I will try again. Also the VOIP test. How did you manage the repair? With ATT or Samsung?
Its not only because of the time. Also because of the money for transport and repair.
Thanks for answering and help!

[Q] Mic crackle with Wi-Fi enabled?

So a friend of mine has a Sprint Galaxy S3 running the latest official Jellybean 4.1.2 that the phone came installed with. The phone has issues with transmitting voice audio, specifically when WiFi is on. To elaborate:
-When talking on the phone with a headset plugged in, my friend's phone emits an intermittent buzzing noise that is audible to the person on the other end, but not her. The noise lasts for a moment, and then goes away. It sounds exactly the same every time it is heard, but happens at random times.
-Whenever using VoIP apps such as Skype/Google Hangouts with a headphone mic plugged in and WiFi on, an extremely loud static/crackling noise is heard by the person she is talking to. The moment WiFi is disabled, the crackling/static is gone, and the other person hears her clearly. Again, she does not hear any of this noise, the person she is talking to does.
-Unplugging the headset in both occasions and using the phone's mic nearly eliminates the amount of static heard. However, in VoIP apps, again, static is heard by the person she is talking to when she speaks, but is less noticeable than with the headset plugged in.
-In all instances, the static/buzz is gone when she disables WiFi and uses mobile data while talking on the phone or Skype/Hangouts.
I've tested this issue with her and the noise is similar to the rapid tapping of a Geiger counter. Is anyone familiar with this issue? Is there a fix? She returned the first phone for a second, and both have the problem. If there's no solution, she is highly considering returning the GS3 and seeking a different model. Thanks!

Did you ever find a solution to this issue? I have the exact same problem. Did you try a different mic than the standard samsung one? You are the only person I've been able to find online even mentioning this issue =/
I know someone with the same issue on the SIII Neo in the UK. I do not know of any solution at all. Brand new phone. Odd for Samsung

Anyone got the Carphonewarehouse UK ROM?

I bought a LG G3 which was on the Three network from eBay. I'm getting voice call issues so I'm hoping I can get a generic rom which might help?

Yes exactly that issue, but only when on GSM calls. Not while using skype
AND thanks very much for the link. I'm downloading the vodafone one now. Maybe there is an audio codec or network issue? Driving me nuts. I can send the phone back to the seller but then I'm without a phone

Hmmm, would be interested to hear whether the software fixes it, but I doubt it. I just swapped my handset because it had the same symptoms. I reckon it was a badly mounted speaker, but then if yours was the same problem then you'd expect it to happen on skype as well.

Software didn't do a thing. And yes, I can't understand why it doesn't impact it during skype calls.
I have had a few calls an it sometimes goes away, so maybe this is to do with the HD voice codec that networks are rolling out. Vodafone might have it's own codec which is not on the device.
BTW, the link on the site for Vodafone UK was the Italian 3 one again!

Ah ok, and that's on on the earpeice? Mines a network codec problem then i think because i don't get that kind of buzzing sound. That sounds almost as if the speaker cant handle the volume?

Yes that's max volume through the earpiece but when you lower the volume and your ear is next to the phone you can still hear it. Almost like an buzz echo. It doesn't happen on skype calls.
Which network are you on?
I'm starting to think it might be a Vodafone network issue.

The way vodafone seam to handle the hd voice codec is it will use it if your on 3g (4g will switch to 3g as they dont have voice over 4g yet), but if the signal goes down during a call or fluctuates (no idea on the thresholds for this) it will drop to a lower quality codec/network type to maintain the call. But it only goes down not up, so regaining a good signal during a call will wont switch you back to the hd voice codec. i might phone them tomorrow about it and see if that is indeed what is happening to me.
But that doesnt sound like the issue your having if the video you posted is what all your calls sound like.

One thing to consider about not having the problem with skype. I do know that other phones (Nexus 4 for example) had problems with audio if your plunged in a headset (earbuds+mic) which wouldn't work properly with gsm calls but would work perfectly fine with voip. Its possible viop isn't affecting whatever problem the speaker has but the speaker may still have a fault.

Bluetooth calls

Is anyone having a problem with their bluetooth where it will connect and work just fine playing music, but doesn't work good when talking on the phone? I am running stock rooted rom with EX kernal if that helps. Music plays flawlessly, but calls sound like there is bad static, almost like the call is about to drop, but I have full service and it does it everytime. It didn't do this when I first got it and I'm wondering if anyone knows a fix for this.

I am mostly using bluetooth headset for calls and have not had any issues with the call quality.
1) When via bluetooth the quality of a call is bad, then turning it off during call, makes the sound better?
2) What is your carrier?
3) Do you have VoLTE enabled or as soon as you start a call, the LTE drops to H/3G?

I have VoLTE, but I am on T-Mobile. For the past couple of days I have been hearing some noise while talking on the phone, but it was there regardless of using bluetooth headset or not. Maybe T-Mobile was doing something to network, but now the noise is gone. Don't know if Sprint has that. Do you have in settings>more>cellular - menu item/switch named "Enhanced 4G LTE..."?
You may have to get a new Bluetooth device I had this issue with the lg tone hbs- 730 on my n5x then it died so I had to buy a new one and I bought the lg tone hbs-800 and its just fine.also u may want to try and reset your Bluetooth device that's solved this issue for me in th e past

S20U exynos speaker sound crackling

Wonder anyone have the same problem as mine.
My speaker produce crackling sound when in call or when watching youtube.
Actually all apps that produce sound.
However after restart, problem gone.
But will come back after awhile.
*#0*# test speaker, no issues.
So i gather might be software issue.
Anyone have the same problem or remedy?

It happens with whatsapp call, samsung music player, anything that project sound. Even with lower volume. After reboot the crackling will go away.
Also notice that it happens more often if battery is in optimized or lower mode. Very weird.
This happend with my device as well, i got a replacement from Samsung.

How old is your unit when you get it changed?
Are they able to finf out the issue?
The sound quality is bad in this phone. I had a s20u with both speakers crackling during phone calls, whatsapp calls, skype calls etc and also when certain youtube videos are played (for example piano tunes) there is buzz/crackle from earpiece speaker. I tested my speakers too from *#0*# but there was no issue then.. the sound was crystal clear from both the speakers. Got it replaced and bought a new s20 ultra but this one have the same issue. Will sell it in next few months and switch back to Apple.
