Note: Some of the links in this thread were part of the DevDB project, which was discontinued in Dec 2020.A new server is now up with those files.https://devdb.xda-developers.com/4/9/2/7/
(OtterX)
Note:With the Fall of Goo.im I will be posting Mirrors OtterX files here:Otter X Twrp and Bootloader Mirrors
(Otter/Blaze)
See Post 2 for ZIP DownloadsFor installing in recovery
These are TWRP/COTR/CWM Recoveries for the kindle Fire 1
Unlike the Official .img files, these are installed with a current custom recovery.
These are used for upgrading or downgrading current Recovery.
These are also safer because the checksum is verified before flashing.
I did not create the recoveries or the script that installs them, just combined/edited them, and tested that they work.
Some zips were created by others and i'm just linking them here.
(Otter/Blaze)
See Post 3 for Image DownloadsFor flashing in Bootloader/Fastboot

Please add CWM v6.0.5.0 to OtterX compatible recovery. I accidently choose the update recovery in the CM updater for OtterX CM Nightly ROM and I have CWM-based recovery v.6.0.5.0 instead of TWRP 2.7.1.0. It was used for next nightly CM ROM several times before I go back to TWRP for more convenient. I post it in the Hashcode OtterX ROM thread.

Far as I can tell there is no CWM v6.0.5.0 for the Kindle Fire 1 Otter or Otter X, Guessing you flashed one for Kindle Fire HD 8.9 (jem) or Kindle Fire HD 7 (tate). Since you did not include a link, I can not test, or post link

If you are running CM Otter X ROM of Hashcode, you can try to get CWM v6.0.5.0

I could not find anywhere the CWM v6.0.5.0 for the Kindle Fire 1 link, but you could have it. I am back to Hashcode ROM (CM official support: https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=otterx) from Slimkat. And this time I choose the option: Update CM recovery in the Developer options before update a new nightly rom (using CM updater). Then the recovery switched from TWRP 2.7.0.1 to CWM v6.0.5.0. It works on KF1 on next CM update.

zip-openrecovery-twrp-2.8.0.2-blaze.zip up
didn't test, but should be good

seems adb does not work in 2.8.x.x, so suggest using 2.7.x.x

20 June 2015: Fixed XDA links

uploaded zip-openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.0-blaze.zip but MTP and mount USB options did not work for me.

On the basis that there may be "dracones" I want to be crystal clear.
I want to root the 7" Kindle Fire that I bought a week ago so know little about.
Question: do I need to change either bootloader or recovery?

Thank you. It's good to be clear

Which recovery to flash? Is it necessary?
First of all, thanks for helping the community and supporting reuse of old hardware.
My question to the community is - is there a FAQ somewhere that explains things for newbs? I was able to flash a FFU bootloader onto my kindle fire, but I don't know if I need to flash a recovery, and/or what's the difference between blaze and otter? Trying to avoid bricking my device if I mix a custom ROM with the wrong bootloader or recovery.
Thanks!

Thanks for doing it; thanks to mod for making it sticky!
great list!
maybe you should add some links for recovery, like a link for the CWM thread? the official TWRP thread is actually housed at rootzwiki i believe, but maybe that can be added as well if it's not against the rules to link to another forum?
maybe Whiskey103 give us an answer about that.
just post a link or PM me, i will add it

Well technically it's not allowed to have a link to other forums if it's not a whole thread on xda with the same ROM/App/Recovery etc with download links and all that.
But in this case you are just linking to it as a handy link. No profit in it for yourself, so i will allow it. I really don't see a problem if you do so.
Cheers
ok thanks for answer whiskey!
namurt, PM me the link i will add it.

- Remove Wipe Battery Stats option. (6.0.2.2+)
- Enable "adb sideload <zip>" command. (6.0.1.5+)
- Add creating an update zip of /data apps to share with others. (6.0.1.1+)
- Add dedupe format (dup) to Default Backup Format Menu, reducing space required for multiple backups on one device. (6.0.0.0+)
Current Issues / Notes:
- Key test does not have a confirmation, so if triggered by mistake a hard reset is required if no USB connection is available to make it exit.
- SELinux in JB4.3+ changes the permissions of su on every boot, so after any boot back to Android you will get a su warning in CWM; it can be ignored.
- efs (/factory) partition and many other important device partitions may now be accessible in the "mounts and storage" menu, so be careful not to format them.
Changelog History:
- Jan 29, 2014 - Nov 4, 2014 - 6.0.4.7 official to 6.0.5.1+ End-Of-Life "nightly"

Fixed it .. Thanks
since i haven't tried it myself, perhaps someone else in here can answer this:
i read on a german forum, that backups made with 6.0.0.0 result in a bootloop when restoring. anyone REALLY tried to backup and restore a rom?

i did tried it .. i did jelly bean backup then installed aokp b40 to try and see if the files intact then restored then wiped data and cache and restored the jelly bean rom and that is the one i'm using right now
If it's Alpha... it's expected to give a fatal error once in a while that corrupts the bootloader?

blobs yes .. i just found out .. i guess the whole idea is same files shared with different backups so no new files no extra space which means same files serve diffrent backups

Yup. Seems logical
Just used this toolkit
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310
very easy to flash
love it so much faster backup and restore!
works fine as intended, very nice nandroid speed! making nandroid backup/restores relevant once again.
Can this be downloaded directly through clockworkmod ROM manager? If so, I don't see an option for it.

Your welcome
Great work!
Good To Go.
Very well done, sir.
Thanks guys
Sorry guys pulled all roms with dead links Devs let me know if you have fixed your links
Newb Question..sorry if wrong thread
So I love the kindle fire...and I've.rooted, or so I think, (.I guess we can say "soft rooted" to add google apps)..I love the look and feel of the stock rom with the added bonuses and although I'm a bit new to the whole -rooting the kindle thing- was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of roms/custom roms that still follow the kindle stock rom but with a bit of "bonuses"...if there are any.... Like added compatibility with games..and apps...etc.There are so many options and I don't know where to start. I guess I could leave it the way it is since it works great but I'm one of those people that has to see...and play with it!! (new ROMS that is)
Are the CM9 and CM7 builds dead? Are we just going to be using CM10 JellyBean now? Just wondering. Thanks!!
Wrong place to post it but doesn't bother me. Modaco is by far the best modified stock experience but really not far from where you are now, maybe you wouldn't even feel the change. The rest of it just depends on what your looking for CM7 is Gingerbread android 2.3.7 very stable. CM9 or ICS is either android 4.03 or 4.04 most here are likely based on android 4.04 are stable enough as a daily driver at least most of them(there are bugs this is development). And of course last but not least there is CM10 or Jelly Bean based on android 4.1.1 these are becoming extremely stable and are really being strongly developed. My suggestion is make a backup try a few find out what you really like or want out of your kindle you will never know what the possibilities are unless you see for yourself

Are the CM9 and CM7 builds dead? Are we just going to be using CM10 JellyBean now? Just wondering. Thanks!!

I have been using Sblood86's rom with IntersectRaven kernal for a week now with no problems . The battery doesn't drain out like the ics and jb roms and it charges like it should, very happy with the decision to go back to gb.

Removed warnings since it was tested on maguro and reported to be ok
Since it is just a repack, no issues are expected here
So if I read the link correctly, this has the ability to switch where your sd partition is located to easily switch to jb 4.1? If it is that would be sweet

Yes, you can set it to use /data/media/0 or /data/media for sdcard
Needs a reboot to take effect

Which mod guide should I go with?

I have 2 kindle fires. This question is for both, but since I am in the Kindle Fire area I it refers to the 1st generation fire I have.
I have a 1st generation fire. Currently it has the stock Amazon firmware on it. It started randomly rebooting. I want to remove the stock firmware and install a full version of Android that does not link this fire to Amazon. What guide should I follow?
you already have twrp and fff bootloader?
no. I have done nothing to to this.
system version 6.3.4?
Yes. 6.3.4
there are a few options
there are 2 different rom types Otter/Blaze and OtterX
OtterX is a more complex setup, but most of the newest roms are OtterX
I would select a rom from Random Builds and Development
or pick another one from the index [INDEX] Kindle Fire Development
post the rom you would like with full filename or link to thread
and I will post links to instructions
how about Otter -X with CyanogenMod
you understand that cyanogenmod is type of rom, with several versions, cm7, cm9, cm10...
pick one from the index
perhaps I did not provide enough information. CyanogendMod 12.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire/development/rom-kernel-unofficial-cm12-0-otterx-t2958155
That CM12 has been abandoned, and server that files were on has been shut down
You could try CM12 posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire/development/random-builds-development-t3228941
You will need a PC to convert to OtterX
Download
zip-otterx-twrp-2.7.1.0-recovery.zip
otterx-u-boot_v2.05.zip
CM12 rom Zip (cm-12.1-20151015-UNOFFICIAL-kad-rsm-O3-mo3-wifi-otterx.zip)
Lollipop Gapps like http://opengapps.org/ ARM | 5.0 | Pico
See see [How To] convert to OtterX ROM/TWRP/Bootloader
Edit: Do not extract/unzip any of those zips
