Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this but I have a buzzing sound in my headphones in the left ear. It is fairly loud when the phone is idling. When I switch apps or screens it goes away momentarily then starts again. I have tested it in the music app and it does not appear to be an issue while playing music. I checked some very low volume sources and its not there. Still I wonder if I have a bad unit or have something activated doing this. I am completely stock new AT&T LG G3.
Update: After testing a few more sets of headphones, this only happens on my Bose QC15s which have the noise cancellation. Its interesting though that the Bose are dead silent on my Galaxy S5 and my wifes iphone. I tried both cables with them (since one is designed for idevices) but it doesn't make a difference. Not sure what interference they are picking up but I think I will take them to an AT&T store this weekend and see if it does it on their display models.

I think it's the same thing. With the Bose it's like a humming buzzing sound. I don't hear it at all with the Apple $79 IEMs. They are listed at 23ohm impedance. With mine it's as if theorizing switches on and off though. I can switch apps or play music and its dead quiet after I immediately pause but then it clicks back to buzzing.

I was almost returning my G3 and i was like "Hell no, again..." , i have exchanged my nexus 5, 5 times! and still has the same problem!
One interesting thing I will note guys, when I plug my headphones in that I hear a buzzing sound, I get the headphone icon in the NB. When I plug in the Apple headphones that I cannot hear the buzzing sound at all I get the headset icon in the NB.
I have read this is a Kit Kat 4.4 issue but I did not have it at all with a Galaxy S5. I am hoping it will be fixed soon but I am thinking about grabbing some different headphones anyway.
I have the buzzing just listening through the earpiece on the phone itself, no headphones required. I have the T-Mobile D851 model. So one would theorize that this is also using power since it's powering the earpiece to make noise. Some kind of electrical interference in the phone itself would be my guess.
Hi. Just got my UK spec G3 in the last few hours and I've just come across what I believe is the same problem. There is a distinct buzzing/crackling/static sounds when I have headphones connected via the 3.5mm jack. The sound is only present when I have certain media playing (using Spotify at the moment). I only notice this when connected using the jack and not when using my Bluetooth receiver (HTC BH S600). I did hear this while using two pairs of earphones while they were directly plugged into the device, the LG QuadBeat 2s from my G3 and the in box headphones from my old HTC One M7.
This has to be a software problem. I was just testing again and the buzzing becomes stronger in any app I use just when I touch the screen and scroll. I hope this is an easy fix in a custom rom. Also as I reported earlier, I do not have the buzzing during playback. I know this because I have tested some very quiet tracks and also checked on some very long gaps between songs. If it is humming it is much quieter. Only when I exit out of the Music app it is immediately quiet then it clicks in at about 2-3 seconds. I have also had a few quirks today where my headphones come up with the Aux Icon then after pausing the Music app a few times they switch to the Headset icon.
Not really sure what is going on but there has to be a software fix.
I will say the Music app sounds unbelievable with Viper4Android installed. It definitely has more oomph than with Play Music. Comparing the same tracks in both apps back and forth, the Music app is cleaner. Not sure what LG has done in that app but I like it.
I only get a buzz during charging. Disconnect the charger and it goes away. Most devices I've owned have the same issue recently. S4, S5, note 3, moto maxx, moto X, nexus 5 have all done it to me but only while charging
I have a really nasty popping crackling sound in between tracks when using aux in my car, but headphones no issues... Never had that problem at all on my nexus 5 so it can't be my head unit in my car
I wanted to post an update to this problem. I originally reported I had this issue with my Bose QC15 headphones. I do not have this issue with my Apple In Ear headphones. When I plug in the Bose, I always get the Aux icon. This got me to thinking about if the cable was different. I pulled the cable out of the Bose and on the end that inserts into the headphones themselves there is a Hi Low switch. Mine was on high. When I switched it to Low, the G3 started to recognize them as headphones and not show the Aux icon. The hissing and buzzing immediately went away and its dead quiet. This switch is an input level switch and undoubtedly having it on Hi causes the G3 to not recognize the Bose properly.
There is a thread about the Aux input problem and I think they have it diagnosed. Its going to take some software manipulations. I listen to my G3 in my car through Bluetooth so I do not experience any issues on that end like the folks in that thread. As for headphones, I am not having the issue with my 2 sets.

Updated to V10E, issue seems to be fixed...

I picked up a D855 V10d (Telstra branded Australia) two days ago and noticed this yesterday myself.
I have Shure SE425 canals and they make the static noise when idle, very noticeable on these headphones. When music or audio is playing the static goes away. This is of course only when the charger is plugged in.
I tested it with the LG headphones that came with the phone and the noise is still there but softer, grabbed my Samsung headphones that came with my S4 and couldn't hear anything. I believe it's due to the resistance of the headphones.
Another test was to turn off the phone and charge it with the headphones plugged in, no static noise if I did this.
Going to exchange the phone today as it's unacceptable, I primarily use it at work to listen to music and often charge it at the same time.

Your cable must be loose or bad
Try a better shielded cable. Also, turn volume to max on the phone to get a better signal and adjust desired volume in the car.

I have tried several cables (one pro series) and it makes no difference.
I have only just upgraded to this phone a week ago from my Galaxy Note 3, which did not have any issues at all.

Unfortunately not, I would expect some interference if I had connected it to the 12V charger, but its just playing as a phone with only the audio lead connected, nothing else!
Most annoying is that you have to pay £240 more to BMW for audio bluetooth.... grrrrrrr

I am an installer at a car audio shop. We like to hardwire bluetooth audio adapters to the factory aux. Your local reputable shop should be able to do it in your bmw no problem. Use this part, as cheaper ones tend to have noise. This has fm mod which you will not be using, but has true analog out that they can hardwire to the back of your aux jack where nothing is seen. At my shop, I charge $100 labor and $100 for the part.

Yes on some occasions i have experienced the same noise.
Its not a cable issue as i have checked grounding, used several cables, and tested with other devices.
It also clears up on its on once you use an app to play music.
I use siriusxm, play music, and pandora..

I have a G2 running the lastest euro open rom and the issue is still there. Nothing has been fixed! Lets face it... They either don't want to or don't know how to fix it...

While I do not get a hiss I am getting distortion from the LG G3 in the left on earphone - I have found that it happens on the earbuds you get with it along with my Sennheiser, both have them inline volume controls. My Sony earbuds do not have the inline volume control and I do not get that distortion. All earbuds testing on other devices and working perfect. You can hear the distortion in say low volume parts of say the Man of Steel soundtrack.
Anyone else have this issue with distortion in the left?

For people who are "not sure" if they have this issue: play some music with rhythmic bassline, then go to Settings --> Accessibility ---> in hearing section move the "balance" slider to the right. Now you should hear the distortion in its clear form in the left phone.
... would be interesting to see how many have this - I would pop round a few shops this weekend and try out some demo units to see if they also have the issue - however I am moving so no time - Would like to know if everyone with the G3 has the issue or some.
Its not something you have to listen very hard to notice - something with a bit of bass effect - I notice it on Man of Steel soundtrack, 1m 12s in on the track DNA.
By the way is the same if you use in inbuilt music player or my preferred player PowerAmp, of course all effects are off. The media files themselves are flacs which I use in testing audio equipment, so I know the files themselves are perfect.
I have this too. But it also seems very picky about which AUX-cable to use. Ive tried 5 different wich I know all works well.. tested them both with another phone and my Nexus 7. With 3 of them the phone doesnt even recognize its plugged in, the sound continues to play though the phones speakers. With the fourth one I get sound but very noisy and when i rotate and wiggle the cable it gets more noisy and static. With the fifth cable I dont get any of that but the left channel is still a bit noisy at certain parts in the songs, just like you describe in this thread.
Do you think all this is related to the same problem or have I also gotten a phone with a bad jack?

You have come to the same conclusion I have come to. Really not sure whether to ask for a replacement and find I get the same experience (alot of hassle for nothing) - Just find its really funny about what headphones you use. I am not liking that my £50 Sennheiser earbuds for gym do not sound as good as my other devices - Is that a batch issue on the hardware side?, is it a software issue (like G2)? God knows !... just annoying as its otherwise a great phone.

Hi I have the same issue with a pair of Shure SE-846 (9 Ohm). Very annoying. Hope this will be fixes soon or I have to get an in-line resistor to increase the impedance. There is (almost) no noise with headphones above 32 Ohm.

I don't have hissing on mine, using the stock Quadbeats and iPhone5 headphones. I have the F400K Korean model. (I am familiar with the hiss as my old G2 had it (was fixed when I was using one of the Cloudy custom rom though).

It never happened in my car with my Galaxy S4 or my Galaxy Note before that.
I'm seriously considering returning the handset as this noise is just not bearable - it's getting near a deal breaker for me.

I am also having the same issue with my unit. Do you guys think that an update can fix this? I had my G3 replaced for having a damaged screen. I don't want to return it to the retailer again because of the buzzing sound.

It's good to know that there will likely be an easy fix. Even if that app has some compatibility issues, I'm sure a G3 version would come out.

Here is what I did:
Tried with 7 different high end - low end headphones. All having same issue on left headphone
My friend has the same phone, he is having the same issue
Went to Retail and tested 2 different phones, both having the same issue.
Tried with different songs, but the best songs you can listen to understand the noise is solo piano songs.
Try to listen this song: Ludovico Einaudi - I Giorni
If anyone has bluetooth headphone, I would like to see the test result. So we can understand if this is hardware or a software issue.
If bluetooth fails, It could be software otherwise most likely a hardware issue.
I thought this was a KitKat issue... so returning your G3 won't do any good. I experience this also. I'm not sure why Google hasn't made a fix for this yet.

So ive got to say this phone has been pretty much awsome for the past 24 hours but I have found its first major short coming wondering if anybody else is having this issue.
SO here is what happens. I happily plugged my note 4 into the aux audio jack in my car and then I plugged it into the car charger. That is when I get this really annoying electrical noise through the stereo system in the car. So I was like hum that is weird my note 2 only did that if the jack was not plugged in all the way. Well when a sound on the phone plays the electrical noise goes away completely and I hear the sound or song or whatever audio is playing crystal clear. Then as soon as no sounds are playing as if the audio card in the phone is not being used its like it shuts off and lets all this electrical noise coming through the charging system of the phone. Then if say a txt comes in the electrical noise sound goes away the alert plays then after the alert plays the electrical noise comes back super annoying. Can hear the alternator in the car through the noise as well. Make me wonder if it is a software issue of some sort because the noise goes away totally whenever any program takes over the audio driver and plays something through the sound card.
Anybody else have this issue? Try it if ya have not would be interesting to hear reports on this. I do not have bluetooth in my car so could not test it. I always raise the phones volume all the way up when plugged into the aux jack so I have more preamping to the stereo.

Haven't tried on the note 4 yet but I did have this same issue on the note 2. But it was more of a white noise. Very low almost TV static noise.

I've had this issue with multiple different phones - I don't think it is the software exactly.
The only time that would ever happen to me is if I was using my aux cable AND had my normal AC charger plugged into it (using an adapter for the car that turned the "smoking thingy" into an AC socket.) If I used an adapter for the car that just gave me a USB port to charge it through only cable it would never happen.
And this happens consistently - haven't tried with my note 4 though yet though.

I agree without the charger plugged in there is no noise at all. But it is strange that the grounding loop problem only occurs if software is not playing any audio at all. It literally goes away when something plays audio I can hear it go silent then the audio plays then there is another 8th of a second of pure silence then the noise starts again. Or say you are listening to tune in radio or something and a notification comes up. It will pause the radio program and then you will hear the noise for a split second then a sound will play silent again then split second noise then the radio will resume playing. So between the hand off of the two audio programs playing a sound you hear the noise really weird.
I agree the AC adaptor made noise for me as well on the note 2 plugged into an inverter. But this is just my normal 12 v adapter that never had a problem with the note 2. Will be interesting to hear what more ppl say with their 12 v adapters.
My power adapter above 1 amp makes a lot of noise. Had a 2.x amp for quicker charge. Had to revert to 1.x amp charger to reduce noise.
I got my note 4 dev edition on Tuesday. I like to listen to podcast via pocketcasts and music through amazon prime music app, pandora and spotify. I notice at low levels there is an annoying hiss/ white noise that constantly is audible. I use these same apps on my iphone 6 plus and have never experienced this. I usually use yurbuds that direct the sound directly into the ears but it occurs with my old samsung earphones as well. (Verizon to cheap to allow them to include the earphones).
Is anyone else experiencing this? I tried to go into the play music app and use the equalizer but this had little affect. Is is an issue in 4.4.4 or could I have a bad phone or bad DAC??
I get the same problem as well with a Canadian Note 4 (N910W8). It's very annoying trying to listen to audiobooks or podcasts. Did not have this problem with the same audiobooks on Nexus 4. It seems like the hissing / static does not get louder by raising the volume so it's always present if volume is not muted and is very noticeable with spoken voice. Tried several players and it happens with all so it's not just Samsung Music with SoundAlive. I hope this is something that can be eventually improved and not "by design".

I thought that might have been the problem as well but it sounds exactly the same when plugged in or not. It sounds like hissing and a bit of crackling after spoken words or pauses between sentences, very noticeable even at only 1 volume step from muted. Probably happens to music, videos and games as well but may not be as noticeable.
I've tried stock, custom roms, volume mods and Viper4Android and tried different players that I know use different playback methods.
I don't think there's a quick fix for this problem and we'll probably all have to live with it. Here's hoping Samsung's Lollipop update brings improvements.

Turns out that it's affecting all 3 of my Sennheiser headphones but not the stock headphones. Never had a problem with these headphones on any device I had within the last 7 years.
It has to do with the low impedance of my headphones and the fact that the Note does not provide enough power to drive the headphones correctly. I went and purchased a 36ohm impedance adapter on eBay (from awaudio) and it got rid of my problem! My remote control on the headphones no longer work with the adapter but the microphone does. I've also got a 14ohm adapter in the mail that I've yet to try so I cannot currently comment on using more or less than the 36ohm I've got now.
I found the idea to try this reading through long threads in the Galaxy S3 forums so this isn't a new problem to Samsung. Many people have exchanged their S3s to correct the problem to no avail. The good news is that the problem was eventually fixed in a firmware update so I guess it's possible for the Note 4 as well but I'm not holding my breath for that.
I believe that the sound may not be quite as strong with the adapter but the ROM I'm using has the sound boost mod and is more than loud enough so I cannot complain. There may not be an easy way to fix this on a Verizon device if you need the volume as loud as with the stock headphones.
Night and day difference when listening to audiobooks or podcasts with low impedance headphones.
Power might be the issue, but I know a lot of others dealt with this and replacing ended up working. I think on the n2 the headphone Jacks were a bit loose but don't remember

I've noticed that when the phone is not actually playing something I can hear some little crackles and occasionally some buzzes.
I've tried it plugged in to several sources and they all show the same bahaviour, so it's not the stereo, it's the phone.

Good question. Yes, I tried two different 1/4 inch to RCA cables and also my 1/4 inch to cassette adapter. Also tried a different phone with the same cables and had silence.
This only happens to me when I plug my AUX cable in my car into my 5X, but it doesn't happen when I put my headphones into it.
I can hear an audible noise every few seconds when I have my headphones on and nothing playing on the phone.. No issues with those headphones plugged into other devices.
Also, my output volume is low. Need to crank my stereo up in my truck when this is connected via aux. Full volume on both the phone and truck is equal to about half when using my nexus 6.. Huge disappointment.
I have this same issue and I've also noticed that the device does not get loud enough when plugged into my cars stereo on my S5 I can the volume all the way up on the phone and keep the stereo at 25 and it would be loud enough for me but now with my 5x I have the phones volume all the way up and the stereo set at 38 "witch is the max volume for the system" and I'm still left sometimes with wanting the music to be louder so hopefully this can be fixed with a software update

Same experience here with the volume in my truck compared to my old phones
I've noticed this happening on my phone as well. It does it with two different aux cables (not when I plug in headphones, though, oddly). My roommate's 5x does it, too. The volume seems fine though.
Edit: I received a replacement phone yesterday, and it has this issue as well.

Yes, I can report the exact same behaviour.
If I put a different phone on the exact same setup, there is complete silence when that phone is not playing back audio.
Anyone find a solution to this?
I get a pop in the silent gap between every song on Pandora. I am using a Bose Q15 noise cancelling headphones and nexus 5x with marshmellow. With new batteries in the headphones and low volume 15%..
I've been noticing the same issue. It only happens when no audio is playing back and the screen is locked. When I unlock the device there's no popping until it locks again.

Ditto. Getting pretty frustrated with so many accumulating little annoyances on Nexus phones.
