Bloat, How much? - T-Mobile LG G3

I had an LG G3 on AT&T for about 2 days then i returned it as i want to be able to unlock the bootloader in the future. I am considering picking up a Tmobile version and since we dont have root yet, id like to get a gauge of just how much bloat is on the T-Mobile version of this phone. Can someone make a quick list?

Around 3 T-Mobile apps and preloaded apps like lookout (most irritating), box and few others. Overall not that much.

Yup, also have an AT&T version (which is going back today) had to disable over 20 bloatware apps out of the box, no joke! I got the T-Mobile version tonight, and as the other guy above said, only 3-4 bloat apps to disable!
Also, my T-Mobile version is noticeably much less laggy than the AT&T version... not sure if it's because of all the crap they put on there or if it was some hardware issues on that particular phone.

Bloat is minimal. You'll be annoyed at first until you go through and disable all the intrusive notifications mostly lookout as previously mentioned and the T-Mobile accounts and network health stuff.
So our T-Mobile g3 bootloaders come unlocked?

Its very minimal, surprisingly.

yes;
sofar the t-mobile LG G3's have proven to be superior to all other carriers in every way.
1 - Unlocked Bootloader
2 - EASILY rootable
3 - little stock Bloat
4 - better screens (far fewer reports of sharpening and dimness)

I am just waiting for it all to happen then I will start the rooting conquest. Got the phone soon as it came out. Loving it thus far, runs very smooth and fast, great pics, great sounds so far its living up to the hype even better. Haven't tried live recording yet

can you guys give a list of what you uninstalled?
I did box, but not sure about the textlink, thinkfree and voice mate. what is textlink?
Is voicemate the voice command?
I want to get rid of the t-mobile apps, like my account, tv and name id. Can't wait for root to get rid of those.

20 apps?!? It's so irritating to see that this is still happening.
This is an obvious indication that carriers continue to simply look at the phones they offer to customers as just another way to pull even more revenue from the pockets of those who already pay way too much for the services to begin with. I'm glad to see at least one carrier (T-Mobile) has calmed down on this bull****.

The sharpening is on every G3 model. It's a software "feature," not hardware.

I am looking to buy an unlocked white Note 3 that will work on T-Mobile LTE network. I do not want T-Mobile bloatware or their branding on the device. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think T-Mobile version is that bad (if the bootloader is not locked). In addition, Wi-Fi calling is a nice feature you should have.
Moreover, EU and Asian versions DO NOT support both AWS HSPA and LTE. You can use PCS for HSPA in refarmed areas though.
Get the official T-Mobile phone. Chances are that bootloader will be unlocked. Root and debloat it easily. As for actual bloat, other than crap-tastic T-Mobile TV, there's not much of a bloat. And as 2nd poster said, WiFi calling is amazing. It can be a lifesaver in some cases. And for de-branding, buy a different cover once they start coming out with them.

Boot loader unlocked and SIM unlocked are two different things. Unlocked boot loader will allow you to flash custom recovery.

Hey, I actually like T-Mobile TV. But I only use the free trial. Every time I reinstall a new ROM I get the 1-week free trial. My friend watched 2 live tennis matches over 4G. The quality was very good (I think it was NBC stream) and it didn't even drain the battery as fast I thought it would. If they would lower the price a bit, or make it so that I could watch certain channels that I subscribe to with my DirecTV, then I would definitely use it more. It would be great for watching NFL/NHL games while i'm out of the house.
T-Mobile's bloatware really isn't that bad compared to some of the other carriers, and some of their apps are kinda useful. I think you can freeze and hide the apps that you don't want by using Titanium Backup.

Be aware of that:
Unlocked bootloader allows you to install non-official ROM, kernel, and recovery, but SIM unlock simply lets you use SIM from other carrier.

Yes the WiFi calling is essential on a T-Mobile phone. I live in the Atlanta area and have poor reception in many commercial/office buildings. At my last 3 jobs I had too poor a phone signal inside to reliably make or receive calls inside the building, but they all had open WiFi, so the WiFi calling saved me. It was important enough I sold my Nexus 4 to get a T-Mobile branded phone so I'd have WiFi calling!

T-Mobile phones have carrier IQ. Just freezing it alone will not stop it. If you reboot it unfreezes itself. Need to delete it. That is bloatware I could care less for.

i totally agree with you that this is legal. samsung warranty will be void.
if you are adding chinese language and sell it to chinese community, it would be nice to let them know which phone doesn't have warranty.

[Q] New to LG question

Hello,
I am potentially new to the LG brand having spent most of the last several years with HTC devices and wondered if the longtime LG folks could help with a couple of questions:
Does LG only release carrier branded devices or do they release GSM unlocked versions as well in the US? I'll be changing to T-Mobile but I am vehemently opposed to carrier branded/locked devices and prefer to purchase direct w/o carrier specific junk.
While I know folks probably don't know about the G4 just yet but how has unlocking the bootloader worked in the past with LG. Can it be unlocked, can you buy unlocked versions, etc?
With many devices (coming from HTC) hotspot is able to be modified so that it can be used fairly easily without carrier interference. Not trying to start a debate on the value of this or if it is stealing from the carrier, etc. For me I've looked at it as I am paying for a specific amount of data, how I choose to use it should be up to me. Has it been accomplished in the past with LG devices to fairly easily use hotspot without carrier headaches?
Again thanks, just trying to nail down some details for my own knowledge to decide if this will be the best device for me. I watched the launch this morning and I am very positive coming out of that but wanted to get some feedback on some specific items that are important to me.
Thanks,

1. They have versions for specific US carriers, and an International version of the G3 that works internationally (Obviously) but yes, you can get unlocked international versions of the G3, or versions specific to your US carrier. You can also get version specific for countries.
2. Bootloader hasn't been unlocked for the G3. LG is ridiculously strict about this, so because the bootloader is locked, with the G3 we've had to "Bump" the custom ROMs (Sign them with legit tags) so that the bootloader will actually boot the phone with a custom ROM.
3. As for the hotspot, I've never used it on my phone so I couldn't tell you about that.
The G2 and G3 have had modded hotspot for those of us with unlimited data plans. Some models you can simply modify a file while others require a flashable ZIP. I'm hoping we get custom recovery and root for this, we've gotten it for the G2 and G3 so far.
It sounds like LG isn't as developer friendly as HTC but IMO is making a superior device. Nice thing about HTC is they sell unlocked and developer edition devices that work with either AT&T or T-Mobile and are sim unlocked and the dev ed comes with bootloader unlocked as well.
I am sure the dev community can make it functional root, etc. Hope so because I really don't want to buy an M9 and the G4 checks off so many boxes on my list of needs...
Thanks all for the info!

yeah I've been waiting for the perfect replacement for my ATT S3. so, rootable, removable back/battery, solid dev community, etc. this one looks just about perfect, only the root status for the ATT model is the unknown. so, let the real waiting begin. i guess the M9 is an ok option, but there's just a few things i can't love about the M9 like the camera.

LG G4 (Question, Help, & Money)

This may be kinda long but please read, I really need some actual help. I can offer a little amount of cash (Paypal) for someone to really help me to get what I want and need.
A few days ago I upgraded from a dumb flip phone that I've used for years. So the logical choice would be the new LG G4, the best phone out there as of now. So I've had it for a few days and I've noticed a few things that are really annoying me, but I'd like to focus on my main issue.
The main issue I've had is, bloatware. Now I am a computer person that if I buy a new PC / laptop, etc. I don't even use it until I reinstall Windows. I HATE bloatware more than anything, and I knew that the phone would have some bloatware that I figured I could uninstall and such. I know nothing about phones so I've been reading up and I came across the Debloater program that disables apps, which is nice but not what I want. What I want is 100% no bloat, I want the OS and drivers for the phone on the main features such as Camera, Messener+, Keyboard, etc. I don't want any extra space or ram or even the battery being used by anything besides my
regular apps.
I've tried task managers and such but even having them auto kill apps it seems that it eats my battery just as much if not worse.
I found out about rooting and ROMs in my research and from what I can tell. I need to install a custom ROM, and I believe the one that will give me what I want is CyanogenMod? I'm told its the Android OS and NOTHING more. This is what I want, but I wanna be able to still install Android updates from my phone and not having to reinstall the new version of the ROM, so I'm not sure how updating works.
I'm not sure if my phone needs to be unlocked and / or rooted to install a custom ROM? If I need to be I need someone to help me through these also.
So is there anyway that someone could lead me step by step in installing CyanogenMod? I've saw some tutorials and such but since the G4 is new everything I find on it seems kinda sketchy or really confusing, so if anyone is willing to help me on FB Chat, Team Viewer, Steam, any other messenger, PLEASE PM me ASAP. I rather not try and follow a tutorial on something this pricy, I can't buy another phone. And they never work for me it seems. Plus live person to ask questions to is something I'll need.
NOTE: I have the VS98611a model of the G4, and I have Verison right now, but I'm going to switch to Cricket since Verison removed my features like FM Radio, Themes, etc. Not way to get those back?
To do what you're asking is to require a unlocked bootloader. You're on the verizon model, and it currently doesn't have an unlocked bootloader. You'd need the h815 or the T-Mobile (I believe) models as they have unlocked bootloaders right now.
I believe cyanogen is on their final 5.1 build. As in no more updates or nightly revisions for stability. Unless I'm mistaken.
I haven't heard of an aosp Rom direct from Google being offered on anything aside from the nexus line, but I could be mistaken.

I'm ready to leave Verizon now so when I leave them it will be unlocked. So then that will take care of that, right? I really wanna get this done...
Either way there is a way to unlock them without having that model, yes? I've heard of people unlocking phones for years.
Anyway to check if mine is unlocked?
Your boot loader is locked. You can root the phone and remove most bloat. That is all you can do at this time.
There is no way to unlock the boot loader on your model.
Until a workaround is found, you have no other options. Enjoy the phone as is. It's a great phone

How do I get my disabled features back? The FM Radio, Themes, etc. Guess Verizon got rid of them. If I leave Verison will I get them back? Or since it's a Verison phone... I don't get them?
Basically it's a Verizon phone. You don't get them.
What are all the G4 models and their carrier?
Which models are unlocked?
Which models come with ALL features?Clearly the VS986 Verizon doesn't.
The H815 is the International version?? I hear its a bloat free version and its unlocked? Does it work with carriers in the US? Cricket, Verizon, Sprint?
I don't know what to do, so many models, no one has any information.

The International H815 can be unlocked and will work on GSM carriers such as ATT or T-mobile only. Basically, if your carrier uses a SIM card, it should work.

I want all my features, no bloat, unlocked, and works with Verizon and Cricket.
Which do I need to get for this?
You can change the Network mode on the Phone, from Global, to LTE/CDMA to LTE/GSM/UMTS, so as long as the H815 has those same options, you should be able to use it with ANY carrier, Cricket, Verizon, ATT, etc. Right? Just tell me what model I need to get what my first line asks.
H815 does not work at all with CDMA, (aka Verizon/Cricket/Sprint/Boost) You're best bet is going to be rooting your phone or waiting for a bootloader unlock. (bootloader unlock might or might not ever happen) Rooting your phone will allow you to remove most of the bloatware.
Honestly, you're freaking out over nothing.
Disable any apps you don't want to see, and they'll go away forever. At this point in time, bloat is only a concern for power users who want to fine tune their phones, as a first time smart phone user you should focus only on the great new features your phone will have.

1. Verizon got rid of some of my features I'd like to use. I won't EVER be able to get this back since it's a Verizon phone.
2. I need to move to Cricket since Verizon did the above and cost more.
I'm told I can switch, but I won't know until I cancel and go to Cricket. So I wanna know what version to get and go straight to Cricket.
Just because it's my first phone doesn't mean anything. I fine tune my PC like crazy and it runs amazing. I've turned everything off on this phone and yet it's down 11% not being used while I slept. That's bad.
Seems like the G4 sucks a little because only 1 is unlocked?

Cricket is NOT CDMA anymore. Hasn't been for almost a year since AT&T bought them and converted to GSM.
OP, get the H815. It will work on cricket bands and the bootloader is unlocked. It's exactly what I will be doing soon since I'm officially sick of Samsung (Sammy fangirl here, or used to be) and them turning their phones into crapple. I have cricket service as well. Good luck.

Bootloader Locked?

Has anyone actually physically checked? I saw the Samsung chats, but nothing officially stating they are or are not locked.
Yes, FRP lock is on and no option to turn it off anywhere like on the Exynos model.
I don't see why samsung, and if not them the companies, have to be dicks about this and screw over their US clients.

I feel your pain. I switched from at&t for that very same reason and now all us models have locked bootloaders, but with all the customization you could do to these phones rooting and flashing isn't really necessary for me anymore. I just like the phone all around. It's a great phone. [emoji4]

Lol... its a well known fact that the international devices get faster and more frequent updates than US or Canadian devices ever will.
I was laughing at all the guys on US/ Can s7s whining about no update to nougat..i had nougat on my international S7 edge mos before they did.

I had both TMobile branded S7 edges and international models as well. I found that I actually preferred the TMobile version for volte, rcs messaging, native video calling and a few more small percs. Yeah the international models was bootloader unlockable and had faster updates but I had to do so many work arounds to get it close to how I wanted and yet it still never did. I could have rooted and got everything I wanted but I actually use Samsung Pay and that'd kill that. To each their own. I also recall the TMobile S7 edge and note 7's having a locked bootloader still eventually got root.

I had both TMobile branded S7 edges and international models as well. I found that I actually preferred the TMobile version for volte, rcs messaging, native video calling and a few more small percs. True the international versions lack some features but depending on your use they may or may not matter..for me I could care less about any of those so no biggie but others may need them.
Id rather have root, twrp and roms etc
The root on the s7 and note 7 snaps was via leaked engineering firmware and it wasnt ideal...buggy, slow and just a general pain to deal with.

Yep, I had the s7 edge and rooted it but it wasn't the same as when I had the T-Mobile version of the phone. It was a pain. These phones are great and I rather use it to its fullest. I also use android pay and want to use samsung pay so for me I'm good without unlocked billiards for now. I have a bunch of phones I have rooted that I can get my flashaholic tendency out. Lol. My pixel gives me that pure android feel so having a vendor feel is ok with me. I will be going back and fourth. I also don't know how having an international version will affect the gigabit network update when it comes out.

Lol... its a well known fact that the international devices get faster and more frequent updates than US or Canadian devices ever will.
I was laughing at all the guys on US/ Can s7s whining about no update to nougat..i had nougat on my international S7 edge mos before they did.

You get what you choose. I chose a carrier model because it is superior in network quality. I can't root my primary phone anymore because my work policies flag rooted phones automatically and I stop syncing. For my playground, I have Pixel XL. Fastest updates, unlocked everything. For a reliable phone I have TMobile S8+. Like i said, you get what you pay for and pick up.
I mean hey sure the bootloader is locked, but once the right person gets one of these in their hands Im sure there will be an exploit. Just gotta wait patiently good things come to those who wait!

While it is software written by humans and anything is possible. S7 never got an unlocked bootloader. We got root with the eng_boot.imgs, but never an unlocked bl.
But I'm holding hope. The community is full of extremely clever people.
Really sucks, I recall the heyday of the Galaxy Note II and SIII, man back then there were like 200 ROM's out, Touchwiz, AOSP, CyanogenMod, etc... Root and Recovery available the first week the phones released.
And I'm talking the U.S. carrier phones too. Not just the international.
And then they all stopped after the Galaxy S4 came out. They released a firmware and locked the **** down like a Navy sub going deep. Note 3 too LOCKED. And forever the good days long gone.
Except the T-Mobile Note 5 was rooted and ROM. But that was a freak rarity.
Now root and recovery are things of dreams for Galaxy phones.

Whole reason I moved to T-Mobile two years ago, was for the unlocked bootloaders that T-Mo was famous for, even when Verizon and ATT didn't allow that anymore. The Galaxy Note 5 was their last unlocked phone, since then, the S7, and Note7 were LOCKED, and looks like the S8 is too.
Glory days are gone.
Almost like the Jailbreak scene, which has faded bad, and there's only a stable JB released maybe once a year or every 18 months.

Buying LG V30 from Verizon ~

I was planing on buying an unlocked US998 LG V30 and switching to Tmobile but have an offer for a free V30 and a huge discount to stay on Verizon. I have always rooted my phones and still running a Droid turbo with TWRP and RR custom ROM. What do I need to know or what does Verizon do to screw up a nice V30 and it the Verizon version rootable ? Like I said I keep my phones until they are worth zero and not sure what Verizon does to current hardware if anything. The V30 looks like a solid phone and hoping it lasts as long as my droid with the dying battery.
You can convert it to us998. I would take the offer

You would take the phone, temporarily convert it to US998 to bootloader unlock and root. Then you could flash back to VS996 while keeping unlocked bootloader and TWRP for root.
Its too good a deal to pass up so I will get it. Any suggested tweaks or mods for the V30 out of the box?
I have some reading to do to get up to speed on the V30 and development options.
Nothing's free. Is it a bill credits deal?
You can find v30 pretty cheap now a days. Much cheaper in long run vs 24 months of credits.
Corporate account perk / promo or whatever they want to call it.
Verizon is typically retail + for regular accounts but wheel and deal like car dealers on corporate accounts.

You mean besides using Nova launcher, etc?
Well you want to turn on Always on Display and there's a bunch of personalized settings in Settings menu. Don't overlook the submenus in those settings with the "..." indicator.
But for real tweaks or mods you need to go ahead and root it. Like this...
Whiskeyomega's V30 Sound Mods
He's also the developer of Boombox ROM.
Phone should be here tomorrow along with an armor case.
Hopefully no surprises getting it active and updated.
Thanks for the suggestions and replies.
