[Q] Few questions - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
I have a few questions that I'm sure have probably been asked around here, but i couldn't find them. I have been on xda for a good while now, mostly as an spectator.. In that time i've gotten to know my way around rooting, unlocking, flashing roms, modding, etc. my previous phone (samsung vibrant). So here are my questions:
- I bought my htc one m8 off of ebay, it's a 32GB at&t unlocked version. I know that hardware-wise at&t's m8 is the same as the unlocked international version (correct me if im wrong). Since the phone is carrier unlocked, does that make it the same as a factory unlocked m8 for all intents and purposes?
-Say i wanted to revert back to stock, can i just flash an image of a stock factory unlocked version without expecting problems?
-Right now I'm in the US, but i plan on going abroad for school.. how would i go about updating software for my phone? would i have to wait for at&t updates or could i just go with htc updates for the factory unlocked version (so far i like sense, so i doubt i'll be flashing vanilla roms)
These are the questions i have right now, but please feel free to add any other information you think might be of interest. I felt at home back at samsung vibrant forums, i hope i can do the same here. Thanks in advance :good:

Have you discovered the AT&T subforum yet?
I'd wager most of your questions have been discussed there.

Thanks man. Yeah, i knew about that sub-forum. I just figured some people in here might have my same questions.. since it's sometimes cheaper to buy an at&t and unlock it. And since this sub-forum is more populated..
If there is someone in here that has answers to my questions, i would be forever grateful.

I-747m and I-747 question

OK my sister in law and her fiance bought gs3s yesterday from att here in Louisiana USA.
One is i-747 and one is i-747m, now I did some research and figured out the "M" is the Canadian version per say.
Now they are letting me go flash happy with them I've found ROMs and rooting etc but I've seen issues with modems and etc maybe....
But since they are for sure USA phones does it really matter on what I flash? Or do I have to make sure the "M" gets special attention?
Sorry for the longevity of this just trying to be precise for its not my personal phones lol

I'm in Canada so I have the i747m and I've flashed AT&T Roms with no problems. When I do flash AT&T Roms though my phone becomes branded as an AT&T model(i747) but other than that nothing changes. As always make a backup and happy flashing.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
im also in Canada and i have the i747m. The AT&T Roms work fine.
Thank y'all, I was pretty sure it wouldn't be a big deal, but again not my personal phones so I wanted a triple reassurance

[Q] Verizon Unlocking

Hello XDA.
This question may be discussed in some other thread (and if it is please redirect me to the relevant one) but I would like a fresh opinion.
I am planning to buy a HTC One X under contract from AT&T. The unlocking part I am sure I can handle. But my main query is whether I would have to see out a certain period where I would have to use the phone on the AT&T network before I can unlock it?
And as I live outside the US, with intention of going there sometime in the future, will I be able to use the unlocked phone when I go there?
Thanks and looking forward for any and all replies.

[Q] PLEASE Any way to flash to Cricket?

I have been searching for months and I see a TON of posts where people say they HAVE flashed to Cricket (and discuss their various problems), but I am unable to find ANYTHING about how to flash to Cricket. Every lead is a dead-end. They either bring me to pages that do not work, or people who want me to send them my phone. I get that this phone is old and maybe that is why all the links are dead? But any help would be much appreciated.
As far as concerned currently you can't. Ever since AT&T bought it they've allowed certain use of cdma. But as time passed on they were mostly focused on gsm over cdma. Therefore currently only the people with grandfathered plans may use cdma. If not then they have to have a AT&T phone or an unlocked gsm phone to use their services. Long story short yes there was a way to flash to cricket. But not anymore :/ sorry about that bud. But small heads up! If you find the AT&T version of the phone you dont even have to unlock it!

Trying to choose a model

I've recently been looking for a good phone to join my parent's AT&T family plan. I've tried out the Note 4 and really love it, I just don't like the Samsung bloat. I want to buy a phone in about a month, and my budget is around $450. I searched on eBay for an unlocked Note 4 and found that there a lot of listings for AT&T unlocked phones at $400. At first, I though this would be great. It's not expensive, it's a great phone, etc. But then I looked at the XDA Developers forum and found a mess of different versions. After looking around, I'm pretty disappointed to find that the N910A is not rootable, which is a pretty big deal for me. I can deal with Samsung bloat if I can use a root disabler or something. But if it's not even rootable...
Anyway, I just want to ask a few questions regarding the Note 4 models.
1) Is the AT&T Version really not rootable? Is it just more difficult? (if yes, does anyone know why not?)
2) Would the T-Mobile version (N910T) work if I could find a nice unlocked one on eBay?
3) Will the pre-installed ROM update to Android M when it's available?
I hope these questions make sense.
Thanks in advance!
Yes it is not fully rootable and most likely never will be because of the locked bootloader and the write protection in the kernel it protects.
Get the 910T and you will never have to worry about it. You can flash the M rom from tmobile when it comes out (you will lose root) or you can look in the dev section and flash a pre rooted android m release that meets your needs. More than likely the dev section will have android m months before tmo sends out the update.
Generally, taking the auto updates when rooted is not advised because depending on what they have changed and what you have customized, it could mess things up and break things. Nothing a factory reset couldn't fix though. Do the updating according to your free time and schedule, not theirs.
Be wary when buying from eBay or Craigslist, $400 new and unlocked is a great deal but those phones could very well be fakes

Question Smokin deal but...

So I can get the Pixel 6 Pro for $8 per MO for 3 years if I trade in my OP 8t+ with AT&T. What are the chances of being able to root? If not, is it really worth it? Tell it like it is please.
guessing you didnt read a single thread here. it had root and aosp rom day 1

Apparently not enuff. Lol. I saw Root on the non carrier version but assumed that Carrier skinned phones were impossible to unlock boot loader. I guess I've spent too many years on Samsung bloat to know any better.

It depends on your carrier, whether he allows an unlocked bootloader.
Looks like OP is on AT&T. P6P has its own quirks but aren't you happy with OP8T?
Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, butt if memory serves me correctly, at least a couple with the AT&T variant were able to root by using the same "trick"as those with T-Mobile variants, which was to contact customer support, tell them you're going out of the country and wanted to be able to SIM-unlock so they could use the phone outside the US. Once those variants were SIM unlocked, they were able to enable OEM unlocking and unlock the bootloader (and root).
There are several threads in this section about the subject but I believe T-Mobile customers have been the most outspoken, so you might have to dig to find the folks who specially l specifically did it with AT&T variants, not to be confused with the folks who are using the factory unlocked variant on AT&T.
