Need advise in design of application - Design, Prototyping, UI, Graphics

HI all.
I'm creating application for search ATM with filters:
Bank (List of banks)
Payment System (VISA, MasterCard, Maestro)
Currency (USD, Euro, etc)
Location (Current, Select on the map, Saved Places)
Time (No matter, now, 24hour)
Distance in (yard, mile).
I don't like my UI now, there are many Spinner's. It would be great to get any advise how to make UI more attractive.
Thank everybody!

You can download some app by search like "atm finder" , "toilet finder", "gas station finder".
And learn from them

Truly try to ask less info and check material design tutorials

here an idea material like..
ive tryed with green color

Like the design of the post above. Hope there is the possibility to search in other length units than yards? European people don't know how to deal with that

You can code a function to get the device's Country and switch between showing yards and meters based on that.

Final UI
Hi all.
Thank you for your all advices.
Finally I got this UI:

Welcome to the improved XDA-developers forum

First of all: don't worry. Everything you are used to is still here. Your username still exists, all the messages are still here, and we're all still here.
There are a few changes though:
You can set a country flag, as well as which device(s) you have and a home GSM-provider. These will be displayed in icon form with your messages. It's completely uncomplicated and much more fun if everyone participates. So please use the 'Profile' button in the menu above to set these things for you. They help others help you by knowing what device you have and what provider you are using.
Topics now have an extra property, which defines whether they are relevant for the original XDA, for the XDA II or for both. A small icon shows with each message. You can set this property when you start a new topic.
The separate XDAII board is gone. All messages there have been moved to the forum where they are most appropriate (see below). The fact that the messages were originally posted in XDAII now shows with an icon.
We now allow attachments, both in forum postings and in Private Messages, sized up to 50MB (!).
The boards have new names, and are slightly re-organized:
[list:42f131921e]
General
Current events, news, etc.
Using it
messages formerly in 'PocketPC' go here.
Not too technical, about use and peculiarities.
Unlocking it
formerly called 'Unlocking'
Networking it
formerly called 'GPRS/WAP settings'
Stocking up for it
formerly called 'Accessories'
Upgrading and modifying it
formerly 'ROM updates'
Hacking it
formerly 'Programmers corner' and 'Other techie stuff'
Anything but it
formerly called 'Off-topic'
[/list:u:42f131921e]
We currently use the plain-vanilla 'subSilver' phpBB style. Expect further changes to the way things look over the next few days. Please let me know by clicking 'PM' under this message if anything that used to work for you all of a sudden isn't working anymore.
Hope you like it...

Wow ! well done ! certainly a lot of work ...thanks
Sure does and it looks good too! 8)

We're still confused about all these Radio Stack Upgrade numbers. And if we are confused, imagine what that means for the poor folks out there. But I will include some more numbers tomorrow...
A couple of suggestions:
In the ROM Version setting of the profile, there should be a "kitchen" option for 4.00.16, since this is on at least one kitchen (perhaps "kitchen" ought to be a check box?)
I don't know that I would have chosen to have a merged 'update it' forum for XDAI and XDAII. Most readers are interested in info for one device and dont care about the other.

I was planning to create a one-click filter option for 'viewforum.php'.
Why damn, this blob-thing is ... growing.
As you may have seen the forum now has it's own hostname: forum.xda-developers.com. All existing links (/forum and /phpBB) will redirect to the correct thread or post on the new hostname (using a rewrite rule and sending HTTP 'Moved Permanently').
The uncompressed database for the forum is now 40 MB, the entire site is sending and receiving a few GigaBytes per day, to and from over 2500 unique IP-numbers each day.
Congradulation!
Hello
Well done and great work, keep it up.
thanks with best regards.

looks alrite but i miss the yellowy colour scheme now looks like every other forum on the web lol
how strange ...
the DB is only 40Mb ... this fits on 10% of my stamp size SD card ...
and yet, with just 2500 db-access (and how many posts? probably 100kb)
we get Giga bytes of traffic....
Just think how wasteful we're with current technology....
This goes double for a Pocket PC with two wireless communications,
100's of Mb of data, 400Mhz cpu ... and all that it does is displaying
who is calling your phone
Hmmm ....
[this is not a flame of the site or the PPC.... just a note on the status of the information/software age of the 21st century in general]

No worries: this is temporary. There will be some proper design-work done on the entire site.
This is a good opportunity to say "Thank you" to Mario Giambanco, whose ideas and kind offer to work on the site prompted me to do some cleanup first, which resulted in the changes you see. Between him, myself, and hopefully some other volunteers we can now start to do a major overhaul concerning the looks and stale content of the main site.
The new 'main site' is going to be database-generated (from the phpBB database), and will have at least 'News' and 'FAQ' pages, pointing to topics on the forum. This will mean the 'main site' will be much more of an up-to-date tribute to the collective work of all of you on the forum, instead of a somewhat stale collection of some cool stuff we did way back. Creating layout in the way we did it before is just too much work.
Welcome to our new face
It looks very nice
But maybe we need added section: download & upgrade hardware ???
very nice
Simply An excellent job
I preferred the old one. bah humbug
Thank You!
Thanks! For all the hard work it is much appreciated

Kind Regards, StayLucky Jim.
Hacking it ?
I written quite a few custom applications for the XDA and your site has some interesting infomation that has helped me.
I have replied a couple of times too with some code snipits.
All was very professional.
Now the Programmers Corner is under Hacking it, so I must of now become a Hacker. An interesting term, that I will have to add to my CV and see if it effects my future software appointments.
At last! Your decision to migrate to 2.0.6 is very welcome
If you interested - I can suggest two mobile adaptations for phpbb:
- read only version optimized for using as Mobile Favorites/Avantgo channels
and
- fully functional version for using from mobile devices.
These versions were developed and tested for one of the mostly visited (264,100 messages currently) PDA-related site in Russia http://www.handy.ru/board Unfortunately, all of the site is on Russian, but you may look though the following links just to smell it:
Mobile Favorites/AvantGo version:
Setup channels (Controls translation: forum name; timeframe; pictures (all/smiles only/none); link conversion mode; signatures on/off)
Ready-to-synchronize channel link (two days plus vacations, smiles only, links converted to text, without signatures).
Online mobile version: (banners should be visible from desktop PC only)
Forum index
Forum page
Topic discussion
All security is the same as in desktop phpbb version. Almost all functionality is implemented except site administration, advanced moderation panel (topic joining/splitting/mass deletes) and profile changing/private messaging.
These forum versions not include support for skins or language resources (sorry, but I develop them as fast as I can). So translation to English and slight adaptation to your mods (if any) needed. But I'm ready for this job.
The only main forum changes needed are:
- adding 4 lines to template variables array initialization;
- modifying 4 template files to add links to mobile versions;

It seemed like a logical term to combine 'Programmers corner' and the little used 'Other techie stuff'. We think of the term 'hacker' as meaning a benign and very advanced programmer or techie, and not in any negative media-sensationalist terms. (Even though some of us do smile when we take the SIMlock off.)
Ofcourse if you think the rest of the world would see this differently, you're welcome to say 'Programmers corner' in future job applications.
I sincerely hope this linguistic issue will not keep you from continuing to benefit and contribute in the future.

[20/09/2010] MiCarrito - Shopping List application v.1.391

Hello,
I just finished developing an application to manage the shopping list (called MiCarrito) and I'd like you to test it and provide me with some feedback.
My intention is to publish it on the marketplace (It will be free, of course), but before that I wanted to test it with hardcore users like you, guys.
With MiCarrito you can:
• Sort the shopping list by product categories to make shopping easier and faster.
• Create recipes defining lists of ingredients. Add all the ingredients in a recipe directly to the shopping list.
• Sort product categories in the list to fit the path you usually follow in the supermarket.
• Develop new products and categories, and re-assign products to a different category.
• For each product you can select the unit of measure and its price.
• For each product you can see the quantity that you bought of that same product during the last week and the last month.
• Synchronize your shopping list with your partner or a friend.
• Once in the supermarket, you can move the products from the shopping list to the shopping cart/trolley. Besides, you can set the current price and see the price it was the last time you bought it.
• As you fill the cart you will see the number of products in it and total amount of your shopping.
Localized in English, Spanish, Russian, Deutsch, Polish, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, French, Danish, Chinese, Korean, Czech and Greek
It has been tested in QVGA, VGA and WVGA resolutions.
Greetings and thanks for your help.
Note: Should any of you guys want it in your own language, find the resource file also available for download. Just let me know that you can help me with the translation and we'll keep in touch.
v.1.391
- Fixed Greek localization
v.1.39
- Fixed bug related to textboxes and compact qwerty or phone keypad. (Thanks to iosub for reporting)
v.1.38 - Release candidate for Marketplace (If no bug is found in the next five days...)
- Improved usability for product availability feature
- Added Greek localization (thanks to geogeo.gr)
- Fixed Portuguese localization
- Fixed English localization
v.1.37
- Fixed category choice form
- Fixed Italian localization
- Fixed German localization

Hi mr.First. First of all, thx for testing
Yup, I can make English the default language. I hope to have it done in 2-3 days.
While I do this, you could see it in English if you change your regional settings (I know this is not the most appropiate answer, but it's the only way to make it work for non-English PDAs while I get this fixed). Sorry for that.

Hi, one question. If installed in the SD card and afterwards the PPC hardresets, does it need reinstallation? can reinstallation be avoided by restoring a settings backup file?
Hi cruiserrr. It shouldn't require reinstallation as all settings remain in the install dir.
You'll only lose file association (stored in the registry) needed for importing sync files.
Anyway, if you want to backup your data, best option is to select "synchronize with a friend" option in the menu and send export data to yourself.
This way, if you need to hard reset your PPC and reinstall application, you'll have your exported data.

Nice application.
Can it calculate prices in euro?
Thanks
Seems to be a very nice project.
What about other localizations? Is it possible that you exclude the language terms in a seperate text file for easy translation?
Btw: In your 3rd screenshot, there is "Quantity" [InputField] "und."
What does "und." mean? Don't know it

The application selects the currency that corresponds to your regional settings, although it’s only informative in that it only multiplies each quantity by the product price (it doesn’t bother about €, $, £ or any other symbol/currency) and sums them all. It only shows the symbol corresponding to your currency (the appropriate one based on your regional settings ) to let you know that that is a price and not any other number.

My feedback:
Very very nice looking, very finger friendly, great functionality adding recipes. No hangouts. Very good job, congrats.
Maybe performance can be improved a little (is not bad, but I think can be better).
I would put quantity as a column rather than second line.
I would facilitate access to categories & recipes
I would allow to store lists (eg. monthly shopping, fresh goods shopping, etc) and even "shops": one shop can be the actual shopping list, another shop can be the things I bring to the beach or when doing a business travel. etc
I would allow to add indiviual ingredients of recipes (maybe I do not want them all) and also let you see last time/quantity bought when deciding which ones to add.
I seem to have a problem when the program is running, when I minimize, if I press the micarrito icon the app does not come to front. I can only access with the task manager.

Many thanks for your feedback, cruiserrr.
- I will check if I can do any improvement regarding performance
- With respect to storing different lists (eg. monthly shopping, fresh goods shopping, etc) you can use recipes as a workaround and use them as predefined lists.
- I like the idea of adding only some of the ingredients in a recipe. I will try to have a new version with this functionality during this week.
- The problem you experience when you minimize is a "known" issue with the app. Will be fixed in the next version. Sorry for this one.
Thanks again for your comments and feedback.

It is automatically created when you delete a category that has products in it to avoid deleting all the products. If you want it to disappear, just assign the products to their corresponding categories or else delete those products
I think this is better so that you don't accidentally delete products inside a category. In case you feel this is not the right behaviour, just let me know your concerns about that.

[DEV] [REQ] C++, rewrite existing code

First I would like to thank the whole forum (with few exceptions that I'd like to not mention here) for the past 2,5 years, which have been very educating for me regarding Windows Mobile as a system. During that whole time I have searched for the perfect simple-to-use, lightweight app for storing and retrieving a grocery list, yet unfortunately I have had to come to the conclusion that it does not exist to this date. There are some existing apps but these are either not simple to use or do not accomplish the simple task at all, or they are too heavy (requiring additionally the .NET framework to be installed for example, etc.).
The idea for the simple software is that one has a changeable groups and items of groceries, from which they can select the already saved ones needed at that shopping day (e.g. during a discussion with girlfriend), and later when in shop they can just check the ones they have already put into basket. I would like to see the person who will argue that it does not easily beat archaic mode of storing information, a.k.a. paper and pen.
I have found an app which, with some relatively small amount of effort can be rewritten to accomplish that task, this software is iContact AE. As far as I understand, there is judicially no problem using the source code from iContact AE as long as following the license restrictions (correct me please if I am wrong). Why AE? Just a selection based on the fact that AE has the most appealing interface and most settings. Of course, this could be a point of discussion, but so far it seems like the best choice.
CAB - http://icontactae.codeplex.com/releases/view/28951
Source - http://icontactae.codeplex.com/SourceControl/list/changesets
I created a possible, chronological tasklist in order to get from iContact AE to the shopping app, whatever it will be called (name suggestions also welcome in due time). Also, I already have a pretty clear vision about
Discuss the usability and feasibility of the selected software / it's source code and it's alternatives (as far as I remember there was the original iContact and some other derivate version).
[*]Create, discuss and review static prototypes of the interface (basically screenshots of each view).
[*]List the requirements to be implemented (or removed).
[*]Code in / remove code according the list from previous task.
[*]Create skin and graphics.
[*]Clean up rest of code, remove unnecessary parts of it (to make it more light).
[*]Test and review changes.
I can either take lead, perform or participate actively in the tasks that are listed green. I only need a competent C++ coder who can help and thinks this is a great idea.
The changes needed to the existing source code do not seem to be much at first glance, but of course as I cannot code in C++, I could be wrong. I just looked at the parts of code where to change the tabs and queries to storage files.
So there, got it off my chest. Any C++ gurus missing a simple, convenient grocery app?
OK, I will put this in another way. I will personally contribute $50 (via PayPal or if EU country, via transfer) to the coder - provided that the end result is according to the requirements, which we will agree forehand. If anyone wants to join in with contribution, You are more than welcome.

If I had money I to would offer some.
It's no wunder WinMo is falling behind no one wants to create apps even when offered a straight cash deal.
Amen to that. I was actually reading this and took a good hour of researching to see just how hard it might be and how time-consuming it might be. I would have loved to take this on...but alas, It would split me way too much. I am already working on my FFP_LS Pro 2.5 Improvements (Major Major improvements...I am practically re-writing the app), I am starting work on a game I plan to release (Its a rather popular game I have yet to find for WIndows Mobile), and I already volunteered to work on the Boggle Clone for WinMo ... so I am already pretty split as it is. heh...if I find free time, and nobody has taken this on, I will probably come back and make this my next project
Sorry though...I do hope some developer comes around to assist!
Thanks for Your support. I thought that I don't need to subscribe to my own threads in order to get a notification if a new post is made, but I was wrong. I certainly didn't get one for Your post. So, sorry for the late reply. I will subscribe to my own thread now

Thanks for the heads up. Any differences you noticed compared to "regular" version?
Save your money and buy something that's worth it. CoPilot is worst navigation system I have ever seen!
I bought the full European version for £29.99 instead of £60.
It does annoy me that the USA Version is only £2 for Standard and £6 for Premium!
Navigon is a sack of sh1t compared to this (IMHO).
Each to their own, personally I think it rocks and for the money you cannot complain!
I bought CoPilot v8 at the beginning of May, when I got my S2. It cost me just over £20.
ALK have confirmed there is no upgrade path and all they will provide existing users (along with everyone else) is this 7 day, 50% discount.
After having a quick look at what this new 'Premium' versions offers, I think I'll be saving my money and wait for v10.
A reviewer wrote:
Stick with V8. Glad this wasn’t an upgrade!! V9 seems to have forgotten what SATNAV is for. Suggested routes are ridiculous. Every route needs editing, not good when at the roadside and all you want is to get from A-B. No routing prefs Shortest, Quickest etc. Road prefs if not on neutral make things worse. No town\city location display. Often looses gps fix. Display on Wildfire has grey pixelated areas and chopped off icons. ‘Not fit for purpose’ in many areas. Maps for the region your purchased are free. E.g. I bought UK and Ireland version (those maps are free). I can additionally purchase maps for other regions (e.g. Western Europe).
Regarding the voice, screenshot attached.
Overall this version is great. The UI is epic compared to the last version.

That is a very fair review I would say.
As for the maps, that may be true, I am not sure, but I don't believe it is. I think the cost of the Copilot app includes the maps.
There are additonal 'bolt ons' available within v9.0 which cost extra. I have paid for Traffic (£9.99 per annum), I would have paid for Fuel Prices (4.99 per annum) but it is not available in the UK presently.
The best part for me is the upgraded registration process. In v8.0 it was a nightmare and if you wanted to change from one device to another, it could quite literally make your brain bleed. It is easy in v9.0.
Overall, I am very happy, I am just jealous that I do not live in the US where this is extremely cheap. The cost of maps must be less for Copilot over there I guess.
Someone told me that CoPilot do not integrate with Android Contact
This should mean that it isn't possible to invoke navigation from an Contact address ... is this a fact (or a joke)?
If you're talking about selecting a contact in Android's Contacts app & navigating to it via CoPilot, that doesn't seem to be an option -- instead of opening CoPilot, it takes you into Google Maps. It may be the case that Android doesn't provide the hooks to allow third-party apps to be called from within their Contacts app; Google wrote the OS, so they set the rules.
However, you can select your Android contacts from within CoPilot.

Is Copilot as good or reliable as tomtom? Tbh, I still find myself using my htc touch diamond for satnav since it has tomtom navigator on it. Honestly, all the other satnavs around are crap from what I've tried. They all have some fancy features or graphics which are nice or better in some way (like I use google satnav sometimes and it speaks actual road names which is cool, but no speed camera warnings) but overall, tomtom is the only one I trust and feel comfortable with and which holds my hand down every road. Can't wait till tomtom hits android.

Hate all this Facebook/Twitter **** on Copilot Live Premium, and just hope the navigation part will work!
IGO8 on Windows Mobile is the best satnav I ever have used, so I'll take my old Windows Mobile phone with me in case Copilot let me down.

Android do provide the hooks to allow third-party apps to be called from within their Contacts app. IGO My Way is one confirmed example.

Thanks for the correction -- good to know that. I've been on Android for only a month or so, after having used WinMo since Windows CE 1.0 back in 1996.
BTW, I've seen several people mention IGO My Way on Android. However, I can't find any reference to it on Android Market, nor can I find an Android version on the IGO website. How does one get the software?

Problems - just me?
Hello all
I'm having real problems with mine at the moment. It locks up constantly usually when a planning a route but often when navigating and sometimes it hangs the phone too.
Mine's a very standard installation, not rooted and the phone is stable otherwise.
It might just be me but if not I'd say it's a long way from being release worthy.

[Q] PM 2.5

As most users I am using zooper for waether among other things. Now I had to reset my phone and took the opportunity to setup everything from scratch and while installing another app i thought it would be handy with zooper.
Currently I am using "Air Quality China" and it's widget (which shows me the current average value of all stations in a specific city, in my case Shanghai) to take a look at the "scary face of chinese weather" which uses data from aqicn.org/map/china/
Is it possible to integrate this value into future releases? A bunch of chinese (and expats ^^) would appreciate that.
Thanks in advance
Sando
