After OTA 2.22.1540.3 (4.4.3), Camera app crashes on Zoe and Video Camera mode - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After OTA 2.22.1540.3 (4.4.3), Camera app crashes on Zoe and Video Camera mode. I have tried disabling Xposed, and any modifcation, as well as booting into Safe mode, doesn't seem to fix it.
Is anyone else getting this issue?

lol ...your right ...mine doesn't even open it reboots the phone, and google camera force closes? what a pointless update lol. mines 2.22.401.3. Stupid camera upgrades ....were these even tested? now my media database is messed up, wont play the right sound I set. I thought there was something odd about this update, after the upgrade ...it only optimised a 100 apps ....it always did 359 apps before, wiping dalvik manually does the same, 100 apps, theres a storage issue aswell as the camera, and google camera don't work either, its not part of sense. Is it because we are rooted etc? Oh yes and art don't work for me either.UPDATE: Got ART to work, but not the cameras ...any camera to be exact, thought it might be supercid or because its unlocked but that wouldn't stop other camera apps would it?

If you have Xposed and other root system tweaking apps installed you really can't expect OTA's to go perfectly smooth, can you?

Mine is working just fine, I'm rooted but with stock recovery and no xposed.

I restored to stock before I flashed the OTA, only after the OTA did I root/run Xposed again.

mine is working absolutley fine, even after converting my m8 to a dev edition from WWE edition. I was completeley stock before i took ota (no mods, nothing)

Yeah, turns out it was an app conflict, mainly Google Now/Google Voice Search -- when you enable "Ok, Google" from any screen in the Google Now settings, it interferes with the Camera apps microphone access, sometimes it is able to terminate the process and use the microphone, but when it's not able to, it crashes.

Thanks much. This problem was also causing my video button to require a double press. It wasn't crashing, but the first press must disable the "Ok, Google" listening, then the second press would record the video.

Camera has now broken.

Just did the update, Not really wanting to post, did a quick search and found nothing, But the 2.2 OTA update appears to have broken the camera...
The default app opens and cloes, and others just sit with a black screen
That's weird. I just done my update 2 hour ago. But seems like everything works fine.
Fine with mine.
I even tested the 720p.
Try to manually reboot your phone.
I got issue with app list and fixed with reboot. Probably this one too.
Also check your SD card.
Yea I havent read anyone else having this problem so its annoying, I was planning on doing a sidew by side comparrison with the 2.2 and 2.1 versions.
Same problem here...
RESTART your Desire, it's fixed most peoples cameras.
you should do it with goldcard inside... your radio hasn't been able to update properly

I shouldnt have to use a gold card.
Only way I tried to make it run,was playing with the task killer and killing footprints, gallery and cam apps.
Then it runs,but that's not a solution...
I've got the same problem, just opens and then closes. Tried reboot but it didn't help.

well you're on orange, aren't you?
No goldcard = no camera
My camera isn't working either, a friend of mine with the same phone and same provider (vodafone) has got his camera working with no problems at all.
Same here, camera dead. Rebooting didn't help.
EDIT: Started task killer, killed everything (including camera, it was listed). Now it works.
A note to everyone with problems - I have done some testing and the problems seems to be some unresolved compatibility issues migrating from the old android os to the new one. Things seem to be fixed for some people by restarting however in some cases a factory reset is required. Most settings will be maintained in this however user dictionary, security and data settings may be lost. Other app based settings will also be lost, but so far it seems to be the sure fire method to resolve the problem.
Also note that the problem has been filed with HTC and we are waiting for a response.
Camera is working again, out of nowhere!
+1 - stock unbranded desire. Camera now fails, reboot doesn't help.
Task killing a bunch of apps lets you start the camera - but this does not survive a reboot.
Moving apps to the SD card in App Manager also re-enables the camera for some reason but again this does not survive a reboot.
Need a fix for this pdq!
OK - have a fix that works for me. Killed all tasks one by one and tested camera to find culprit:
LED Light Widget 1.0.9
Uninstalled this and camera working normally even after reboot.

np - glad it works for you too.

Camera sometime not work

Sometimes the camera doesn't work, it says it "can't connect to device" or something like that. I don't know what's going on and I have to reboot to make it work. I'm on stock rom 4.3 and stock kernel, rooted. sorry for my bad english
You probably have been using an app that doesn't release the camera properly. Can you think of an app that you've recently installed that uses the camera?
Mine sometimes does this with Snapchat.

Maybe snapshat doesn't release the camera properly every time. I remember a while back I was developing a camera app, and whenever the app crashed, the camera wasn't released, and the easiest fix was a reboot...

[Q] problems with the camera app force closing

Anytime I try to use the camera app it closes. When I first started the phone it was working but after a couple hours it just stops working

I'm having the same problem, but only when opening the camera in portrait mode. If I open it in landscape, it works fine.
same issue

Just ran into this problem where the camera app would FC after launch. The problem is Last Pass and the new app integration they introduced recently. You have to disassociate the camera from Last Pass and the problem is gone. The setting is in the last Pass options.

Having the same issue since I installed all my apps and did play store updates. It only crashes when I go into portrait mode. It works fine as long as I stay landscape.
Tried removing Snapchat, vine, all camera related apps. Closed camera. Deleted cache, clear data.
I thought maybe it was the sd card. That didn't fix it either. I'm stumped. Sending HTC and email.

I've just found that if I go into the app in landscape mode, go to Settings\Reset to default, then go into portrait, it works fine until the app is closed/reopened.

I tried that too, it only works for a few rotates then it dies again.

This is exactly my problem
I emailed htc from my corporate email so they should get back to me fast
Thanks for that, it isn't a "big" deal now that I realize I can turn the phone and get it to work but it was maddening until I read that here.

Thanks to @mentallo in this post, it's now fixed for me.
The problem was the new lastpass app integration. To fix it: -
Log into the Lastpass app
Open Preferences
Edit App Associations
Select Camera
Change it to 'Do not show fill window'
Confirmed for me well, thanks for passing it along.

Nice! saved me from going to verizon and causing a stink!!!

What if I don't have LastPass and never have? Currently, it just shows a black screen in portrait mode but works in landscape. No crashing at least!

same with me; I have no lastpass app
And clear data from the camera app, and re-power to safe mode. But it didn't make work camera app?
Did anyone still couldn't find a solution?
I need an urgent help, please?

My problem was with a rotate app that I had installed which was interfering with the camera app. I ended up using an app called Rotate by FaMe IT. Auto doesn't work but Forced Auto does work. If you have "Enable per App settings" unchecked, then the stock camera will be black on Portrait mode. I also deselected the "Show Selection Popup".
I bought my m8 yesterday. My camera has never worked. I don't know what to do please help me about it? I have Htc One M8 without camera
m8 camera crashing
I am having the same problem with the camera crashing in portrait mode immediately upon opening the app, but not crashing or at least not crashing right away in landscape mode. I've had my m8 since it came out and have not had any problems until recently. I do not use last pass but do run Roboform. After reading these posts I disabled Roboform and camera works even in portrait mode. Have been trying to find an option in Roboform's settings similar to the last pass fix, but so far nothing. Is anyone familiar with Roboform or have any suggestions? I run Roboform on my laptop as well for easy syncing and never had problems before this. Thx
This is an older thread, but I just ran into the problem, so I figured I would post an update.
My camera started doing this a few days ago, and I started suspecting hardware because I don't have any apps that accessed the camera. Or rather, so I thought. It turns out that the banking app I use can take pictures of checks for deposit, and that after using that app (even if I didn't use the camera) the main camera app would force close. Freezing (or at least not using) the banking app leaves the camera fully functional.
This sounds like a bug in the camera API, not the apps, but if this happens it would be wise to check all installed apps that get used frequently to see if they specify a camera permission.

Camera failed

When I turn on the camera I get the msg 'camera failed'. I don't know if it's a hardware or a software defect.
My device is not rooted
I have known certain apps to lock your camera for use with them, ive then tried starting camera and its said the same, maybe it could be that?

Thanks James
I dont have any camera apps installed. Nor any funny apps that I may suspect be using camera. Any guesses?
its the go launcher
press the home key to go to touchwiz, and the camera app begins to work again
cant figure out why, though

Camera not working!!!

I have started with the stock ROM, and used cm13, and even updated to the newest fully stock ROM 3.2.4 and to no avail.
The camera app either force closes or nothing shows up on screen. Every once in awhile the front camera will work, but I'll click the icon to switch to the rear camera and no effect, it just stays on fron t camera.
I've tried many third-party apps, I've tried cm camera fix, everything I can think. Clearing data and coach for the app the whole shabang.
Now I'm ordering a brand new camera module and I will see what happens. But any help and any information will be much appreciated thanks
Was it working when you bought it...what did you do to it before it broke?
it definitely seems like a hardware issue, had it been a software issue a custom rom or 3rd party camera might have resolved it and since you have tried many roms and reverted back to stock too so it doesnt look like a software issue.

Funny you should ask, because I honestly don't know when it actually started but I do remember wiping userdata so I could unencrypt my phone and thereafter was when I noticed it no longer worked. Don't know if those 2 things correlate because I flashed back to stock (which is encrypted) and still no luck
Did you solve the camera problem ???
