Rooting, themes and more.. - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I was looking at rooting my phone. However there are some issues I have with it that hopefully you guys can rectify.
How can I update?
What is the most popular rom?
Is it worth rooting?
My main reason for rooting is getting rid of the bloatware from samsung and optus on my phone. I also want to customize Nova launcher with icon themes but I can do that without a root. What other things can I do with my phone with a root?
Is rooting hard? And how do I backup my phone before I do it? Searching around on here I came across an app called Titanium Backup but you have to be rooted to backup with that?
There is so many more questions I want to ask, but I will leave it at this for now.
Thank you!

Can anyone please help me?

Bumping your topic after a couple of house inst going help. Could just end up getting topic closed/deleted. This is not your phones tech support desk and nobody here owes you an answer so when you create a topic be patient. Also not putting "help me please" as topic title would help, just be precise and descriptive about what topic is about.
To answer questions..
1. You flash rom through custom recovery.
2. There is no such thing as a "best" rom and asking this question is against rules.
3. Yes.
I would highly recommend you do some reading/research.

I know no one here owes me an answer, just because you have a lot of posts does not allow you to make the rules around here. I contribute to these forums as well, I was just hoping for some friendly help.

1) I can do this through Odin correct?
2) Ok, what is the most popular rom?
3) Ok.
Should I change my kernel to a different one than stock? My friends said it helps performance and battery life, but I don't know how stable they are. Could someone suggest a good one?
Last time I rooted my old phone I did a bad job of it, I lost all my stuff and I don't want it to happen this time.
If I buy Titanium Backup could this prevent this? I want to be able to update the ROM how can I do this, and what rom would you suggest in this case?
Thank you.

Whihc is why we have so many duplicate topics because newbies do not bother to search/read and instead prefer to be spoon fed.

I was simply informing you of the rules that XDA HAS!

I already answered this earlier, please try and read.
Some ROM's like Cyanogenmod for example have inbuilt rom downloaders which will enable you to download next version and then flash it automatically.
However process is same, simply download new rom, reboot into rescue and then flash next version. No wipe is needed if its same base/version. You only need to wipe if going to new rom/base etc. Wipe will only wipe data partition on internal, your external is untouched.

Managed to root my stock rom.
If anyone is interested in doing this see the sticky in the n7105 thread the guy shows you how to install a custom recovery and install supersu 2.0 through that.
It is also great to try different roms, you can backup and install multiple roms to your liking.

Best rooting method?

I've always rooted my HTC, recently my Ev3D. I found from past experience that certain rooting methods is not too friendly with ease of flashing roms...
Question: I'm not in a rush to root so, should I wait until sprint/samsung release the no signal bug update or is there a safe and stable root method available now?
How many root methods are available now and which is best route?

First, I apologize for posting in the wrong dev section (lesson learned - from Jarred)
Second, I read and read and googled and read androidfurums and xda forums and found too many solutions. Info is too scattered and every root method thread have their own following with praises.
I simply wanted few members to maybe give me names of root method and I was going to read and read and read some more and then make an EDUCATED decision. Since you rather "proudly" rant and make new members feel welcome by claiming an asshole title... I THANK YOU.
So remember, 1 of the thanks on your thank meter will always be there from me ... thanks for being an asshole, have a wonderful day lol

There currently is no "superior root method." At the end of the day if you are rooted it doesn't really matter how you went about it.
There is a small amount of controversy currently about the rooted-kernels breaking something and causing a LOS (loss of service), but we have no proof that the rooted kernels are or aren't causing the problem. (I, personally, think it has nothing to do with the kernel as I got a few LOS bone stock. YMMV)
Now, you can wait for someone to find an exploit in the stock kernel if that makes you more comfortable be my guest...you might be waiting a while, maybe forever as there is no need.
So, no matter what "method" you use they all have the same goal in mind, get SU into /system/apps...the current "stock rooted" method involves flashing a rooted kernel, flashing a root.zip (to install SU) and then flashing the stock kernel back. Now you have Super User installed *and* the stock kernel. Poof, you are rooted, you are stock, everyone wins...right?

I think that downloading 200mb of system files is easier than unpacking a single sin file. I remember when I've been trying to unpack nandroid backup... It was a horror.
Thanks for your information

In the time this thread has been up you could have reflashed and set your Phone back up numerous times over, but tbh you should have had a backup before editing anything. There's links in my Xperia guide to help with extracting ftf files.

Stop being a ****. Some people have a life. Also reflashing, setting up every single thing in settings, flashing mods and restoring apps is not considered as "fun" or "time spent well" so if you have nothing valuable to contribute then why even bother with such a useless posts.

I wonder why People bother to join a mobile developing forum sometimes. I noticed last night my notifications were a little off and couldn't pinpoint what had caused it, a poorly edited image or a particular xml edit, so you know what I did, flashed my CMW back up, bulk restored all my settings with Titanium Backup and my Phone was exactly how it was before I edited it, total time was less than 10 minutes.

It's not like everyone in here knows what they are doing. Majority of people in q&a don't even know what cwm, nandroid backup or titanium backup is so please don't expect to be as smart as you. I also started off as a noob and learned everything I do know from reading reading reading, as I wouldn't dream of trying to mod something that costs hundreds of pounds to replace without some knowledge of what I'm actually doing or how to repair it should I screw up. There are numerous guides and stickys that have been wrote to help with everything and if People aren't reading any or all of them then when they first sign up then you're doing something wrong.

You didn't give him what he was actually looking for did you then go on to say extracting a backup was "a horror" when it's actually really simple. I also gave them advice, and don't really care if you, they or anyone else doesn't like it, either take it for what it is or don't, and as for feeling "superior", I don't feel it as I'm not like that, but after building numerous themes, a ROM, writing a few guides, helping numerous People in threads and via PM, owning an X10 an Arc and a Ray in the few years that I've been here, you would think I might actually be able to offer some advise, which I did by way of pointing them in the direction of my guide where they can find links to help with extracting the ftf you linked to.
Although I would have thought someone would have uploaded an unmodified build.prop by now, but this is the thing with asking for individual files, you can either sit it out or start from scratch after learning a valuable lesson.

The best way to learn something is to read ROM's first posts
First posts of many roms don't give much information actually... You'll probably have to read many ''first posts'' to get a proper understanding. People on here are annoying about telling new people how to get started because they in all likelihood learned by themselves though searching and reading. Flashing a new rom is easy but there is a learning curve and you will need troubleshooting skills, so the more you read and know the better!

We are all learning by making mistakes You think why I know more than e.g. OP of this thread? Because I'm too impatient to wait until somebody will answer my questions! I was doing things by myself, bricking phones, restoring them back and gaining knowlegde! So not more experienced users are "bad" because they won't tell everything, NEW USERS ARE TO LAZY TO SEARCH, MAKING MISTAKES AND LEARN!!!

Don't worry!
Anyone coming to XDA forums for the first time, is "noob" and all the other names...
What IS important - you have "sticky" threads that will explain quite a lot. BUT, you'll have to read and read and read until you'll know what and where to ask... Well, we all learn until we die...
So, yes, read. Search and search and read again! Or, if you're in real trouble, send PM (you know what that is, right?)...
Regarding your question, well, you'll just have to look around and decide what you'll do with your hov :fingers-crossed:
But, to be on "friendly side",

To make it short: every rom needs a kernel that it's likely not stock kernel. In every OP of rom it's written which kernel you have to use...

OTA updates

I'm running Skydragon rom 0.0.5 and was wondering how to disable OTA updates. I had friend with Note 2 on T-mobile and he never clicked on OTA update and his phone took it anyway and wiped his whole phone. I had to reflash stock rom thru odin to get it to even work. Another reason is that I had G flex before my G3 and when it updated to KitKat the battery life truly sucked. Any help will be appreciated.
This is in the wrong section. This should be in Q&A.
Having said that, I'm sure Holy angel already disabled that.
Worst case scenario download titanium backup and look for the update service and freeze it

The following was provided by AutoPrime:
Open LG Hidden Menu (3845#*851#) --> WLAN Test --> OTA Setting --> OFF
(This worked on LG G2.. hopefully work on G3 but won't be confirmed until OTA comes out)
Look, instead of rushing to take an OTA to get the latest software.. think for a moment.
We do no know if the TMO D851 boot loader will stay unlocked in future updates. OTA's can update not only software..
but the boot stack as well.. enabling features to block downgrades.. close exploits.. and all sorts of fun stuff.
so.. instead of taking an OTA.. wait for the files to get posted so we can look at things first.. possibly only updating /system, /boot, modem (maybe tz/rpm)
without updating the rest of the boot stack. ya... do that.
If your running a custom rom and a custom recovery you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Last I knew your phone can't take a OTA with a custom recovery, unless thats changed.

Another reason is that I had G flex before my G3 and when it updated to KitKat the battery life truly sucked. Any help will be appreciated.

Now how did THAT help anyone. Grow up.
Anyway....
I would imagine the dev already disabled it.. But I would assume if you wanted to make sure it is.. You can do what dhonzik said.

Mostly none of the post in this phone area are in the right place. Mods need to just delete threads and punish them from posting for 2 weeks
AWESOME G3

I noticed all of the stock based kernels that belong in development are in the original development but I'm not going to be the one to point it out to the mods. I reported on a couple threads that were not in the correct spot and if I do any more I feel like I would be a nazi.

OTA's can update not only software..
but the boot stack as well.. enabling features to block downgrades.. close exploits.. and all sorts of fun stuff.
so.. instead of taking an OTA.. wait for the files to get posted so we can look at things first.. possibly only updating /system, /boot, modem (maybe tz/rpm)
without updating the rest of the boot stack. ya... do that.

Here's the thing you have been a member for years you should know the rules by now (they are the same for EVERY phone). If you know the rules and post in the proper places this wouldn't happen. Some may be nice about pointing out your mistake others not so much. In the end you asked for it by posting this here so you won't find to much sympathy.
Seriously some of you need to grow the hell up and chill out. he posted in the wrong section. WOW.. someone shoot him in the head now. Seriously? There is less than 10 threads in the ENTIRE dev section for the tmo g3.... RELAX. breathe and tell yourself its gonna be ok.

Absolutely not true. At almost 6 million members can you imagine the chaos that would insue with no posting guidelines? A free for all of post where you want, what you want etc? Now I will say name calling is not appropriate either but honestly, and not that this makes it right but if you spend enough time on these forums you tend to get frustrated in repeating the basic rules that you agree to when you join and, at times, perhaps that it's expressed in a reply.
Basically 2 wrongs do not make a right, in the same instance not following the rules never makes a right. Simple enough, post where you are supposed too.

Ya.. I see that too. I don't like bugging the moderators too much. I wish posters would take some time to understand the rules...

If your running a custom rom and a custom recovery you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Last I knew your phone can't take a OTA with a custom recovery, unless thats changed.

Who are you replying to? Nobody wants to take an ota, that's what his post is about.

Custom Rom feature testing

I have One Plus 3, I want to check about 10 roms.
I don't want to flash each rom on my device, is there any other way to see the exact rom features?
Screenshots are not good enough...
Can I install custom rom on some emulator?
The answer to all of your question is no. You cannot install a ROM to an emulator, and to see all the features you only need to try.
And one note, this is the wrong section to ask this, so before anyone rains you hatred for so, you may want to get this moved elsewhere

As already suggested, use multirom. You do have to download and flash on your device, but all roms are kept separate and you can test every feature directly.

I'm a bit afraid of multi rom - heard it's a bit dangerous (it can brick the phone).
Is anything shared between the roms (app data?)?

The roms have access to the contents of /sdcard. /system and /data are kept separate.
As for bricking, there is always the possibility. Fortunately, it's relatively easy to recover from both hard and soft bricks on the op3. Keep a backup of your important files just in case.
So far, any issues I've had on a rom have been specific to that rom - it's been convenient to be able to just boot into another working rom without a second thought.
