[Q] Purchase the Fire TV version of Minecraft without a Fire TV? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Basically, I own an Nvidia Shield and I would really love to play Minecraft on it. But Mojang, for some probably stupid and incredibly frustrating reason, haven't implemented controller support for anything except the Fire TV and Xperia Play. It makes no sense. But i heard that someone managed to get their apk from their Fire TV to work on their Note 3 with a Moga Pro controller. So surely this would also work with the Nvidia Shield? I just have no idea how to get the Fire TV Minecraft apk. From anywhere!!!! So guys, is there anyway i can do it?

I've done this and unfortunately it does not work :/

I assume it was because the app did a license check and failed. there is a way around this by using an app called lucky patcher but it needs root. If I had the apk I would patch it for you,

That should work or buy having bought Minecraft PE from the amazon appstore would pass the license check. Can somebody extract for us the Fire TV apk?

If it wasn't $7 I would buy it and backup the APK for you to test.

I'm afraid the likelihood of it working, at least with a ps3 controller, is pretty low. I recently tried a game with fire tv support and the buttons didn't map properly.

Minecraft PE Fire TV edition

Seeing as people are extracting flappy bird's family I was wondering if someone would be willing to extract the Fire TV APK of Minecraft PE. I wish to try it out on the Nvidia Shield or Tegra Note 7 with a Nyko Playpad pro. Unfortunately owning the Amazon version is not enough and need the Fire TV to download the special apk.

I own the Amazon version, and for some reason when I first installed and set up the AFTV, Minecraft showed up as available for download, which i did. i did not get charged for doing this (nor did i get an email stating that I just purchased this). it was purchased a few months ago.. A few other games i own on amazon also showed up as available on AFTV.

Any chance you could pull the apk and post it for us? Our goal is to test controller support on other devices.
See if this works. Extracted from my FireTV...
mod edit
It does work but there are a few issues. For example the button icons are messed up likely due to them being the wrong resolution for a tablet (I may have a fix but it is un tested) and the buttons don't map completely correct on a ps3 controller but that has been known to happen. If someone could test it with a different controller please post your results.
XBOX 360 Controller (wired USB) works well on FireTV, same Controller and apk on Nexus 7 2013 does weird things. Key mapping totally unusable.
I will try this on my developer adt-1 Android TV later today and I will post my results
Works great on the ADT-1 Android TV. The only problem is that you can't move left or right, just forwards and backwards.
Running on ADT-1

I did try this on my adt-1, you have to modify the manifest file for it be seen on the launcher though. This thread on XBMC forums explains what needs to be done. I used apk multi tool to decompile/recompile/sign. After decompiling, I used notepad++ to edit the manifest then recompiled/signed/installed. The controls I cannot comment on because the unit I got had a messed up Bluetooth module and I am using a Logitech wired controller that has messed up button mapping. The game did run and I was able to move around but due to the button mapping issue I could not really play it to test everything.
Thank you so much! I have been trying to figure out how to get my sideloaded apps to show up in the launcher. Some of them already do, but there are a couple that dont.
This worked well on the FireTV Stick with an Ouya controller. Just need the 0.10 version now lol.
Thanks!

How to sideload Fire TV apps to the stick when you don't have a regular Fire TV?

I have the Fire TV Stick all set up and awesome-ized. I have one issue though. There are a few Fire TV apps that I would love to have for the stick, but without access to a Fire TV, I can't migrate them over. One app inparticular, Minecraft PE, is a must have. I have the app from Google Play, but it doesn't have remote functionality like the Fire TV version does. I can easily purchase the app through amazon on my computer, but have no way to access it without a "compatible" device. How can I get access to Fire TV apps I've purchased, without having one? Stupid Amazon should just make it compatible with the stick, as it obviously works on it. Ugg

Unfortunately, there's no way to download an APK from Amazon even if you purchased the app.

Ugg. My son's world is Minecraft right now, and it would be great to have the remote enabled version on the Fire TV Stick. Know of a way to request getting it added as compatible for the Stick?
Interesting. I just pulled an update to 0.10.0 from Google Play and it works with the controller now. All is well with the world now. Haha

Actually you can if you create an Android VM in VirtualBox, sideload the Amazon app store, purchase the app from the store and backup the APK with ES File Manager.
I use BlueStacks (rooted version) on my Windows 8.1 laptop. Installed the Amazon apk and that device shows up under Amazon as a generic Android device. Exactly as the previous poster (install, backup using ES, sideload the apk on FTV), except I use BlueStacks.

[Q] games controllers for unrooted

What are the best game controller to work with an un-rooted AFTV?
With the new update I'm using my wired Xbox 360 controller plugged into a hub. It works great with KOTOR and Tales from the Borderlands.
Red samurai from GameStop
The official fire tv controller is actually pretty good. Dualshock 4 is great, but the battery only lasts a few hours.

I read over on http://www.aftvnews.com/alternate-game-controllers-compatible-with-the-fire-tv/ (fifth of sixth comment down) that you need root to edit the keymap for it to work properly.
+1 red samurai works great. And is cheap like $7

you can also use your xbox 360 wireless controller with the official wireless controller receiver.
worked on my AFT out of the box. just plug in the receiver and it works.

I don't think so. The only thing that sucks is the battery life is so bad, and there is no indicator if it is running low, so it could just die on you in the middle of a game. Besides that, it's the best possible controller you can use in my opinion. I have not used it on an unrooted ftv though, but it shouldn't make any difference.

Does this also go for the PS3 DS3 controller?
@octra,
Damn that is awesome news! What would be the button layout when using a 360 controller on an AFTV? Does the X button act as the Home button?

No, DS3 doesn't work without root. You need an app called "sixaxis controller" to use it.
is there something that can be used as an all-in-one device..gamepad, mouse,& keyboared. dont want to have to buy several pieces of hardware to use with this fire tv stick. something like the sony google tv remote . I have one of those but the stick wont recognize it , even with settings.apk
Thanks for the info. I take it sisaxis is a root only app?

VERY useful app to use FTV / Stick remote as a mouse

Hi,
Not sure it this app has already been posted but it's great and can avoid you to use a physical keyboards for the emergencies.
Not tested deeply so far but I think it's very nice (it's cheap too). Unfortunately it's not on the amazon store so get it from Google Play store or send an email to the author to ask him how to do that if you don't have the store.
Regards.

Thanks, just installed this. Works well
This is very convenient. I can finally use my xfinity tv go app without using my Logitech. The price is really fair too. 99¢ total and I've got it on all 3 aftv devices.
Wow! Thanks for pointing this out. Now I don't have to dig out my USB mouse keyboard combo just to click on a few things!
excellent app. Good spot. Works well for NBCSN.
excellent app. without a doubt THE only decent solution to mouse control on fire tv without having to lug around an extra mouse.
love it!

Thanks for all the feedback to my question. Took the plunge and app working well for me too. Great to be able to finally use a few mouse / touch-centric apps on my FTV stick.
Got my FTV in one of the recent £25 sales and really pleased with how well it all works. Rock-solid wifi streaming in the room farthest from my router. What's not to love about it?
has anyone tried on FireOS 5 yet ? Don't seem to be playing nice with the new ADB system here, doesn't work..

Hi wejgomi, I'm the developer of this app(Mouse Toggle for Fire TV) and just wanted to let you know that I'm submitting an update with Fire OS 5 compatibility soon. I already have it working already but it just needs a bit more testing before releasing it. The app update will be released before the public availability of Fire TV OS 5.
Thank you
For those with root, Droidmote Server and Client works great, been using it for a year.
Just to provide a little feedback. I have two very minor issues with the software which might be easily fixable - or I may be doing something wrong.
1. Could the speed of scrolling in mouse mode be accelerated just a bit or some sort of weighting be applied so that long continuous presses move the pointer more rapidly than short taps? Long scrolls across the width of the TV screen are just slow enough to get annoying (but I admit I have a low tolerance for these things
2. When using the programme to interact with another video playing app, the fact that play / pause is the toggle for the mouse is not ideal. Personally, while I may use the fast-forward button to get through to the point I may have previously watched to, I very rarely use the rewind button. Personal preference would be to have some way of configuring which button (other than the d-pad and centre 'select' button) activates the toggle. Is this possible?
These are very minor gripes. I have to say that I was always impressed with the capabilities of the hardware in the FTV Stick. With this and the ability to sideload apps I now have no need for anything more powerful from my - now very SMART - TV.
Thanks iostouchdev!
I myself use Wukong Remote. Works excellent with my AFTV and sideloaded apps like Sling and DirecTV that require a touch screen. I like how you can also use it as a controller with d-pad, or keyboard.
Damn. This app + Show Box is like perfect. Well worth the money.
Ugh!! The broke it on the FireTV 2, the next update the new OS will probably break it for the 1gen hardware. No remote apps working either other than the official one.
Edit: Mouse Toggle for FireTV Fixed, see next comment, thanks!

I just submitted an app update(v1.02) with Fire OS 5 support for the new Fire TV 2015 / 2nd Gen. device. It will also work for the 1st Gen devices when they get Fire OS 5 too.
Regarding the remote apps: The 'Remote Mouse for Fire TV' app is working on the new Fire TV but you need to verify that the Fire TV companion app is updated to version 1.08.
If you need additional help please feel free to email me at the address in the app or just reply here.
Thank you!
